Karen, I am 5'6" and weigh 120 too(!!), and I JUST got this coat in a small. Without a bulky sweater, it fits perfectly. When I put it on with a couple layers underneath (tank, long sleeve shirt and sweatshirt), I felt a little tightness in the shoulders. So basically we're kind of between sizes and ultimately you'll have to decide how you like your clothes to fit and whether you'll mostly be wearing it with thicker layers. If you have narrow shoulders the small should be okay. But if your shoulders are normal to wide the medium might be better for you. One good thing is that the coat has a drawstring, so you can cinch the waist a little and make the medium fit a little better. (I haven't even decided yet if I'll exchange sizes.)
