Patagonia Merino 3 MW Zip-Neck Top - Men's

December 10, 2011

Elastic thumb loops make layering easy. These help to keep your sleeves from folding up to your elbows when you slip on that extra layer. They fold comfortably out of the way when not in use.

Patagonia Merino 3 MW Zip-Neck Top - Men's

December 5, 2011

Notice the multiple seams in the underarm/shoulder area. This eliminates any bunching or folding in the armpit, allowing for exceptional mobility and comfort. With both arms overhead, I noticed that the bottom of the shirt doesn’t rise and remains tucked in. Perfect for climbing, running, or any activity that requires a lot of arm movement.

Good materials are nothing without good design.

La Sportiva Mythos Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Mythos Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 13, 2012

This is my first climbing shoe. I have been in these for more than 3 months. I have no complaints.
As with most leather shoes, they do stretch (I feel that mine have gone up a full size). Getting a proper fit can be tricky. The build quality is amazing, the rubber works well, and they look/feel awesome. For me, they are the perfect shoe. But that does not mean that they will work for everybody.
If you are concerned about being “limited” by this shoe, don’t be. Yes, the mythos is an old design and there are better rubber options out there. But if you have to ask, you’re probably not talented enough to climb out of these shoes. I don’t pretend to be, you shouldn’t either.

Patagonia R3 Hi-Loft Fleece Jacket - Men's

December 26, 2011

Would anyone say that the R3 is worth the extra change when compared to the R2? I plan to use it as a midlayer, under a 60g Primaloft insulated jacket. Is there any significant diff. in cut/fit between these two garments? I am looking for slim fit, high waist, for high output activities. I understand that the R3 is made of a thicker material than the R2. Is the R3 still able to breath?

Replacement lenses are out there. Have a peak at the Smtih Optics website. For flat light, the best lens option according to Smith is the sensor mirror, although the RC36 is not that bad. I have the RC36 in my frames all the time and I love it. A real all purpose lens.

Lens changes with this frame style will take some practice. However, it will get a little complicated if you are outdoors, with cold hands, in dim light. If you get good at it, you could easily change out the lens in under a minute, but that would be under ideal conditions.

Yes, they are similar to the prophecy, but a little deeper.

Patagonia Dynamite Duo Jacket - Boys'

December 13, 2011

You bet! This should keep him plenty warm while playing on the slopes. It is very well insulated, practically windproof, and water resistant. Notice that it is a “regular” fit, making it perfect for layering. Fitting a base layer and a fleece under this jacket will be no problem at all. My only complaint about this design would be the cuffs, as they are a little loose and lack a closure device. However, this won’t be an issue as long as he has a pair of full-cuff gloves to slide them into. Just remember, fuzzy side in on storm days!

Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles

December 13, 2011

While swapping out your straps would not be completely impossible (anything can be done), it will be rather difficult as Smith does not sell replacement straps or buckles (to my knowledge). However, if you have experienced some sort of manufacturing defect, you can always send your goggles to Smith as all smith goggles have a lifetime warranty against such defects. Or you could ask if they make repairs. Personally, I have not had to deal with the Smith warranty/repair folks, so I can’t comment on how that process is handled, but it is worth a shot. Hope that helps to answer your question, and good luck!

Marker Duke Ski Binding

December 12, 2011

I have been skiing in “regular” alpine bindings for almost 20 years, but I would like to start alpine touring (nothing serious, no multi-day treks just yet). I’m 5’ 10” and 175 lbs., I ski fast and somewhat aggressive (10+ DIN), and I prefer steeper slopes. Is there an AT binding that can offer me the durability, dependability, and safety that I have grown accustomed to through my alpine bindings? Is this the best binding for my purposes, or is there something else out there that would suit me better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles

December 11, 2011

Both will do the job, but the Sensor Mirror would be the best pick for you. According to Smith, both lenses have a visual light transmittance of 70%, making them almost identical when it comes to performance. The Gold Sensor Mirror and the regular Sensor Mirror are perfect for low to medium light conditions (storms, overcast days, etc.). However, it should be noted that the Gold Sensor Mirror is going to help you most in LOW LIGHT (evening, overcast) while the regular Sensor Mirror is intended for FLAT LIGHT (snow storms, whiteout). Hope that helps you in your decision.

Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles

This will mostly depend upon where and how you plan on using the lenses. Polarized lenses, while never a bad investment, are not going to benefit you very much if you only go out on stormy, overcast days. For low light/flat light conditions, regular mirrored (un-polarized) lenses will suit you just fine. However, in bright light conditions, there is no substitute for a good polarized lens. Keep in mind, the Smith polarized lens only allows 25% VLT, so it is going to be a fairly dark lens (much like a pair of sunglasses). If you are venturing into an environment with frequent changes in weather and lighting, bring a second lens option if things get dark.

I would say that this is not going to be the best shoe for a wide range of terrains/activities. Patagonia Better Sweater Beanie

Patagonia Better Sweater Beanie

Rating for this product: 4 December 6, 2011

I have worn a Better Sweater jacket for over a year, and I can say that the material is warm, comfy, stylish, durable, and very functional. It is one of those rare fleece items that works just as well on the mountain as it does around town. However, being knit polyester, it can pill a little if exposed to a lot of repetitive friction. For that reason, this would not be suitable for wearing under a helmet. Other than that, this hat will keep your head warm and stylish!

Best wool shirt, ever

Patagonia Merino 3 MW Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Patagonia Merino 3 MW Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 5, 2011

When it comes to cold weather/high altitude activities, appropriate layering is a must. Even the fanciest technical shell, while a critical piece of equipment, will be significantly limited by the things worn underneath it. Do yourself a big favor and invest in a quality base layer before your next winter adventure.
I will admit that I underestimated the quality and capability of this base layer. I remember thinking that there was no way that this shirt could be worth such a high price. But I changed my mind once I tried it on and had a chance to see what it could do. During the winter I wear it almost all the time. No matter what I am doing, the Merino 3 keeps me warm, dry, and comfortable.

Pros: Unbelievably thin, smooth on the skin (almost like a cotton t-shirt), durable (80% wool/20% poly), very warm, impeccably tailored, quality zipper, thumb loops, very flexible, slim and comfortable fit.

Cons: For those with very (very) sensitive skin it may be a little itchy. A wash should take care of this. If not, have a look at the Patagonia polyester capilene options (even more smooth on the skin).

Overall: One of the best base layers available. Take a look at the stitching and seams, it is clear that some serious planning went into the design of this shirt. Well worth the investment, you will not be disappointed. 5'10" 175lbs. and a Medium is perfect.

Smith I/OS Interchangeable Optic Goggle

November 29, 2011

Not to worry, Amanda, I once had the same questions. The Smith Optics website does a good job of describing the various different lens options. For your info, the Sol X lenses will block out more light and the Sensor lenses will block out less. More specifically (according to the folks at Smith);

Sensor Mirror/Gold Sensor Mirror = 70% VLT
Red Sensor Mirror = 60% VLT
Ignitor Mirror = 35% VLT
Platinum Mirror = 25% VLT
Red Sol X = 18% VLT
Green Sol X = 15% VLT

VLT (Visual Light Transmittance) is the amount of visible light that gets through the lens. Example: Sol X for sunny days, Sensor for stormy/overcast days (and nights). I would recommend the lenses that will work for you in the widest range of lighting situations (Sol X and a sensor would be a good one). Honestly, they are all good choices. The biggest difference will be in appearance. Hope this answers your questions!

Smith Heiress Goggle - Women's

November 29, 2011

Good news, Sarah, Smith makes some great lenses for both of those activities. You can easily swap out the lenses in most Smith frames, including the Heiress. However, if you are planning to swap out your lenses on the fly, or if you simply don’t have the luxury of a few minutes, look at the Smith I/O.

For skiing, or any activity in the mountains, I would recommend either the rc36 (my favorite) or the Ignitor Mirror. These are essentially “all purpose” lenses that help to increase your depth perception when it gets stormy, and continue to protect your eyes if the sun decides to peek through the clouds. There are more stylish and fancy options out there, but for my money it is the rc36.

For mountaineering, or any really bright light situations, go with the Sol X mirror. According to Smith, the Gold Sol X has an extremely low visual light transmittance (7%). The Green Sol X is slightly brighter at 17%, and the Red is 18%. The important thing is that your eyes will be well protected if you choose the Sol X, or any smith lenses for that matter. Hope this helps, and have fun out there.

Best trail running shoe out there

New Balance 101 Trail Run Shoe - Women's

New Balance 101 Trail Run Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 28, 2011

I have been running in the male version of these shoes for over a year, and I love them. If you are considering purchasing a pair it would be important to note that this is a very minimalist shoe. The upper is composed entirely of mesh/soft foam, and the sole is very thin. People with arch support issues will want to look elsewhere. Those of you that are looking for a proper trail running shoe… your search has ended!

My girlfriend and I like to go on trail runs and mild hikes, so proper footwear is a must. I recently bought her a pair of her own 101’s, and she is very pleased. The construction is identical to the male version (besides the fit) so if you would like a more detailed description of the 101, you can check out my review of the male version. In a nutshell; the shoe is super light and breathable, the sole is very thin yet comfortable, the Rock Stop plastic does exactly what it claims to do (and it does it very well), and the durability is topnotch for such a light shoe (over a year of strenuous use and my pair is ready for year 2). Obviously, the style and price are equally awesome. If you have a chance to see these in person, check out the trim (it’s super cool, almost an iridescent/pearl effect). Even if you never take these out in the hills, they are still an awesome gym shoe. However, avoid cement/pavement as the sole will wear extra quick! New Balance does make a lightweight/durable road shoe, this isn’t it.

When it comes to shoes, I doubt that I have to remind you ladies that, “you get what pay for.” With New Balance, you get nothing short of a perfect, purpose driven, American made shoe. Do your feet, and your workout a favor. Get a pair of the 101’s.

Patagonia R1 Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Patagonia R1 Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2011

The R1 fleece is a pleasure to wear. It’s one of those things that always finds a place in your pack, regardless of your destination or activity. If you have not had the opportunity to take a look at the R1 material in person, do it. It is pretty cool stuff. The waffle texture of the interior provides a comfortable amount of warmth and insulation while the smooth exterior makes it perfect for layering under shells. It glides easily over the skin, and won’t snag on long underwear or other base-layers. It does come in a ¼ zip at a slightly reduced price, but the full zip is worth the extra change when it comes to disrobing after cold weather exercise.
As a standalone piece, the R1 works perfectly in fall/early winter weather. However, it is to be used strictly as a base-layer if you plan to take it near or below freezing temps. If you are looking for a warmer fleece, look toward the R2-R4. The higher number = warmer fleece (and higher price).
Pros: Great design, comfortable fit, amazing material, built to last.

Cons: Your friends will steal it.

Overall: The best all purpose poly fleece.

Patagonia Fjord Flannel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Patagonia Fjord Flannel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 1, 2011

This may sound strange, but I feel that this shirt is a rare item. I have been looking for a thick, durable, well made flannel shirt for over a year, and I think I found it. It could be that my standards for flannel shirts are a little too high, but I believe that a garment that makes you look like you live in the woods should be able to do just that… live in the woods, and survive. All other flannel shirts that I have tried in the past have either been too thin, poorly assembled, or just plain cheap. Thankfully, Patagonia did it right. Granted, it is expensive for a “shirt,” but look closer and you will notice that it is more than just a shirt.

Pros: Heavy/thick material and great choice of colors, buttons that don’t fall off, relaxed fit but not too baggy, room for an undershirt (or two), very warm for a cotton shirt, timeless “Stamper Family” look.

Cons: Price is a little high. Also, if you are planning on tucking this into your pants (why would you?) you may have some trouble due to the thick material and short torso length. Just know that it was made to be worn “out.” If you want something thinner or not as warm, have a look at the buckshot.

Overall: The ideal flannel shirt. Who cares if you look like something out of a Ken Kesey Novel?

New Balance 101 Trail Run Shoe - Men's

New Balance 101 Trail Run Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2011

Despite being such a lightweight/minimalist shoe, the 101 provides ample protection from rough terrain with a surprising level of comfort. My feet do not require much arch support, and I am plenty happy in a lightweight mesh shoe, so this design is perfect for me. However, it should be noted that the 101 is not the shoe for runners who need significant arch support or a thick cushioned sole. Another important point is that this is strictly for the trails as the sole will rapidly deteriorate on cement/asphalt. If you are looking for an “all purpose” shoe, you will need to keep searching.

Despite those two points, the 101 is the best trail shoe that I have yet to find. The upper material is composed of a nice light mesh that is able to take a serious beating. The toe is reinforced with a thin rubber guard for a little stub protection. The sole has been updated from the previous version (100) to include a solid plate of “rockstop” plastic. This is very effective at preventing bruising and allows me to run over almost anything without any discomfort. This reinforcement also helps to add a few more miles to the life of the shoe. There is a slight rocker built into the sole, and as a result the padding under the first toe is a little thin. Overall, a very comfortable and capable trail running shoe.

Smith Stance Goggle

Smith Stance Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 February 12, 2011

I recently upgraded from a pair of Scope Pro’s (Smith), and I am very pleased. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much more than a restyled Scope Pro frame with a buckle on the strap. However, the Stance is so much more than that. When compared to the Scope Pro I find that the Stance fits even more comfortably with my helmet due to the “out-rigger” strap design, and the entire frame feels significantly more solid and sturdy. Additional benefits can be found in the thicker padding and manually operated vent that is built into the brow of the lens (which is perfect for strenuous uphill treks and warmer days). As always, the lens options from Smith are top-shelf and the warranty is awesome.Overall: Very pleased, perhaps the best Goggle for the money.

Mountain Hardwear Super Power Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's

January 27, 2011

The R1 hoody and the MH super power hoody were made for similar uses and, not surprisingly, from similar materials. However, they do differ slightly in construction and fit. They both utilize Polartec polyester fleece as the main material, and both have built in “stretch” panels and thumb holes. The MH hoody stretch material is mostly nylon while the R1 material is Cap 4 fabric (Polyester). The R1 is a ½ zip while the MH is a full zip. Perhaps the most noticeable difference is that the R1 has that waffle grid lining design, which can be seen from the exterior. This is nice for maintaining an active body temp, and feels good on the skin, but some people just don’t like the look of it. The MH hoody lacks this design and has a more smooth appearance. As for pilling, almost all polyester fleece materials will pill eventually. This is especially true if you wear the garment during aerobic activities, like jogging, or if you put your polyester garments in the dryer (always air dry these jackets).

Ultimately, both are great choices and both get the job done. Note that the MH is slightly thicker/heavier than the R1, and slightly warmer as well. They are also rather slim fitting, the MH wears closer to the body. Both are great layering pieces or stand alone tops for cool weather adventures. Good Luck!

Smith Heiress Goggle - Women's

January 25, 2011

The Gold Sensor Mirror lens is a suitable choice for low/flat light conditions. It is designed to increase depth perception, and allows 70% light transmission (which is good for low to medium light environments). However, this will not be the best lens if you also like to venture out on the mountain at night. The mirrored lenses do look sweet, but there are better options out there if don’t mind sacrificing those good looks for increased performance. Have a look at the rc36 (which is what I use, a great all purpose lens from Smith... but not available in this goggle through BC), the Gold Light (another Smith lens, tailored for use in flat light... but I am not certain if BC carries any goggles with this particular lens), and the Ignitor Mirror (which functions almost exactly like the rc36).

Smith Scope Pro Goggle

January 23, 2011

Some lenses will, some won't. My Scope Pros are equipped with the rc36 lens, which BC does not carry at the moment (unfortunate). I highly recommend the rc36 for two reasons; lower price and a wider range of use. I have used these on sunny days, overcast days, through heavy snow storms, and at night. No complaints, they get the job done no matter what the conditions.

Granted, the more expensive mirror lenses look super cool and are technically "better," but for all-round use I would go with the rc36. If you have the money, get two pairs; one with the mirrored lens for those bluebird days, and one with the rc36 (if you can find them) for night trips and cloudy days. Ultimately though, you can't go wrong with these goggles, no matter what lens.

Patagonia Nano Storm Insulated Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Nano Storm Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2011

This is definitely my favorite cold weather jacket. The Nano Storm is well suited for just about any environment, and any activity. Granted, the price is a little difficult to justify, but after using it in the snow I understand just how much of a value it really is. As others have mentioned, this is a combination of a lightweight water/wind-proof shell (Torrentshell) with a thin PrimaLoft insulation jacket (Nano-Puff). The Nano Storm provides a level of warmth, comfort, and style which most other jackets in this price range simply don’t.

Pros: Very protective/breathable outer shell, watertight exterior zippers, abundance of pockets, thin but efficient insulation, tailored/slim fit with still enough room for layering, oversized (insulated) hood with room for a helmet, good range of motion and flexibility.

Cons: While it does come with a pull-cord hem, this jacket lacks a powder-skirt! This is the one thing I would change to make this the perfect winter jacket. Also, it is not the most compressible insulated shell, but it can be packed rather neatly with a little planning. Lastly, the shell material, while it is flexible, does not stretch and is not likely to be the best choice for cold weather climbing.

I got this as a birthday present, and I have only just begun to use it (skiing) so I am unable to comment on its durability. Not a serious concern though as it comes with lifetime guarantee from the manufacturer. 5’10” 175 lbs. and the medium is an ideal fit.

Overall: Buy one. If you can find it on sale, buy two.

Patagonia Storm Jacket - Men's

January 19, 2011

Both Ian M. and MC are correct, the Storm is a great backcountry ski shell (which is how I use mine). However, you might also want to take a look at the Nano-Storm. This is another Pat product that combines the Torrentshell (water/wind proof shell) with the Nano-puff jacket (60g Primaloft insulation). In all, it is another 40 dollars, which may or may not be worth it... this will depend on the kind climates you plan on trekking into, and how many layers you like to pack. Both are excellent choices for a cold weather backcountry adventure (or catching a taxi in the rain).

Should have tried these first!

Patagonia Capilene 3 Bottom - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 3 Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2011

I have tried several different types of long underwear in the past, but this is my first pair of Capilene pants. I have to say that I am very impressed and pleased with this material. The Cap-3 is lightweight, highly compressible, breathable, flexible, warm, and comfortable. They fit close to the skin, but do not constrict like tights or bunch up behind the knees or under the crotch. These pants deliver all the things, and more, that I want from my base layer.

My biggest complaint with most mid-weight base layers is that they tend to be pretty shabby at keeping in the heat when the storm sets in. However, I find myself pleasantly surprised with the Cap-3 material and its heat management abilities. When paired with a shell pant, these are all the insulation I need. Plus, the material is thin enough to fit into my tight boots along with my socks. At 5’10” 175 lbs. I found the Medium to be a perfect fit.

These are not just expensive pajamas.

...What Storm?

Patagonia Storm Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Storm Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2011

A bit pricy for a rain coat, but this thing performs. The waterproofing material, whatever it is, does an amazing job and works just as well as some of my gore-tex gear. In a word, this jacket is DRY. The Storm will certainly satisfy if you are looking for a durable waterproof shell for backcountry skiing, trekking the jungles, or just walking around a rainy town. It is cut fairly loose making it ideal for layering and the hood can easily accommodate a helmet. Admittedly, you wouldn’t be able to stuff a puffy down sweater in there, but I find that I can wear a form fitting base layer with a thin fleece and a thick sweater without any significant restrictions to my movement (5’10” and the medium fits well).

If you are considering this as an option for a ski jacket, you may also want to take a look at the Nano Storm. It is an additional 40 bucks, but you get a bonus insulation layer of 60-g primaloft. The zippers are a little different, and some of the pockets have been changed, but it looks pretty sweet and is better suited for the snow. If I had to do it over, I probably would have purchased the Nano Storm. But I am plenty happy with the plain-old Storm.

Regarding durability, I have had zero issues with this jacket (or any Patagonia gear for that matter). But if I ever do, I know the manufacturer will repair, replace, or refund as necessary.Overall: Pricy, but well worth it. I have yet to find a situation/environment that the Storm can't handle.

Favorite Socks

Fox River Rocky Ski Sock

Fox River Rocky Ski Sock

Rating for this product: 5 January 13, 2011

A durable, warm, breathable, thin ski sock is a hard thing to find, but the Rocky sock fits all of these categories perfectly.

Pros: The wool/synthetics blend combines all of the benefits of wool with all of the durability of synthetics. Fits like a dress sock and is easy to squeeze into my super tight boots. Plenty of padding, but only where it is needed (full shin, heal, ball of foot, and toes). Very breathable and keeps the feet dry, but they are still able retain some heat (I used these in -12F temps and had no problems). Extremely flexible, does not restrict movement or circulation and won’t fall down into the boot.

Cons: Haven’t found one yet!

Overall: The best sock at an amazing price. Blows some $40 pairs out of the water.

Gets the Job Done

Coal M.T.F. Gaiter

Coal M.T.F. Gaiter

Rating for this product: 4 January 13, 2011

The M.T.F. does all that I expect from an affordable neck gaiter.

Pros: Comfortable and breathable two layer fleece, nice snug fit that won’t slide off your face, keeps in the heat while standing still or racing down a slope, enough length to stuff into the top of a jacket, and it can be easily stored in a pocket when not in use.

Cons: Not the most windproof gaiter available, I wouldn’t recommend it for use below 20F. Also, it is a little tight over the head (and tends to carry quite a bit of static with it too).

Overall: For the price, it is hard to beat. Does what it was designed to do, and it’s better than nothing.

Transit Pro = Smaller Scope Pro

Smith Transit Pro Goggles

Smith Transit Pro Goggles

Rating for this product: 4 January 13, 2011

The Transit Pro is essentially a slimmed down version of the Scope Pro with a few minor variations (See my review of Smith Scope Pro Goggles). They share the same great features; a flexible frame, proper ventilation, comfortable padding, a stretchy silicone lined strap, and fog resistant double lenses. The obvious differences can be found in the overall lens size (with the Transit Pro being significantly smaller) and the strap width (the Transit Pro strap is approximately 1.5” wide while the Scope Pro strap is about 2” wide).

The Transit Pro Goggle is sized for a small to medium adult face, and is also suitable for some larger youth faces. I got a pair of these for my girl, who found the Scope Pro Goggles to be too large for her forehead and nose. The Transit Pro’s fit her much more appropriately, while still providing just as much protection from the elements. While they have a slimmer profile, and slightly more feminine styling, they still fit me (with my large head) quite well and don’t negatively impact my peripheral vision.

These work seamlessly with the Smith Holt helmet, or any Smith helmet. The Transit Pro is a worthwhile purchase for those with smaller faces, or those who don’t like larger/bulkier lens styles. Everything you need from a pair of goggles, except the high price.

Fox River Rocky Ski Sock

January 8, 2011

These socks run pretty true to size. I recommend that you follow the size chart before you purchase. I am a size 11-11.5 and the large fit me perfectly. If your feet are any smaller than a size 9, go with the Medium, any larger than size 13, pick the XL. The height will depend on your overall body size. I'm about 5'10" and these stop just below my knee.

"Best Sweater"

Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2011

This really is a “better sweater.” It is lightweight, warm, well cut, and surprisingly durable. It is perfect for just about any situation: lounging around the house, jogging, errands around town, even layering under a shell for cold weather mountaineering. This thing is the most versatile and long lasting mid-layer that I own.

If $130 seems a bit much for a polyester sweater, consider the ¼ zip version. It is significantly cheaper and just as amazing (plus it has a handy chest pocket). However, as with all ¼ zip tops, it can be a little tricky to get on and off. Once it’s on though, no need to worry!

Pros: Super comfortable, warm, durable, versatile, and good looking.

Cons: Price (although it’s worth every penny), not very compressible for those who need every square inch of their pack, not very wind resistant (layering solves this issue).

Overall: A mid-layer you can wear on the mountain, at the bar, and around the house. Why not?

Fits like a Glov... Goggle

Smith Scope Pro Goggle

Smith Scope Pro Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 January 6, 2011

I recently purchased a pair of the Scope Pro’s with the Rc36 lens and I am very pleased. The foam padding is super comfortable, the strap is flexible enough to fit over the helmet, and there is a thick bead of silicone on the helmet-side of the strap to keep things tangle-free. The Rc36 lens has served me well in both full overcast and clear/sunny skies.

Pros: Fit is suitable for any adult face (medium to large), super soft foam cushions, flexible frame that wraps around the eyes, well ventilated double lens for no fog… ever, seamless integration with any smith helmet (I use the Holt), silicone lined strap, amazing price. Sure, there are better goggles out there with fancy lenses, but the Scope Pro has all you need.

Cons: Entire frame is a bit “tall,” that is, people with small noses might have some trouble. The foam padding does not seem to be made from the most durable substance, and I don’t predict that it will last very long… but Smith guarantees these for life, so it's not a problem!

Overall: Lifetime warranty, superior comfort, worth it.

Don't be a dummy, wear a helmet

Smith Holt Helmet

Smith Holt Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2011

I purchased the Large, as I have a rather fat melon, and it fits perfectly. I would highly recommend measuring the circumference of your head for sizing purposes. If you find yourself in the middle of a size range, go with the bigger size if you usually wear a beanie or balaclava (although the Holt is plenty warm and you might not even need any insulation- note the ear pads).

Pros: It fits well with any smith brand goggles, or most brands for that matter (I use this with my scope pro’s and they have yet to fog up on me). It is warm while being well ventilated. It has a convenient and easy to use goggle clip on the back. It saves brain cells for less money… hard to beat price.

Cons: The chin strap can be a little uncomfortable in cold winds, but that can be easily remedied with a layer of fleece. Not the most slimming of cranial accessories (especially the Large in matte white) which could be a problem if looking sleek on the slopes is a big deal for you.

Overall: worth it.
