Burton Laid Back Sweat Pant - Men's

Burton Laid Back Sweat Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 2, 2012

The description specifies that the two front pockets are zippered but this is not the case with these pants. I assume these are an older version and that's why they're on sale but the zip pockets were a big draw for me. They're still a nice pair of sweats for a decent price but be aware that your chapstick might fall into the depths of the couch during your nap.

Nice Jacket

Marmot Kingpin Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 31, 2012

Really nice jacket, good softshell weight. I bought this to replace an Arc'teryx Gamma SV hoody and it's doing a great job. It feels just a touch warmer than the Gamma when you're in the shadows of a deep couloir but breathes and vents really well when you get out in to the sun. 6'1", 180, 40" chest; I bought a medium and it has a trim but not tight fit. It'll layer over an R1 no problem.

The only complaints I have are fairly minor: the armpits are kind of high. They're not tight but you can feel the jacket a little more than you'd expect. Also the main zipper is difficult to operate with one hand due to the rubber which makes it water resistant. That's the tradeoff I guess but my Gamma had a regular zip and I never had problems with water getting through.

Not for me

Black Diamond Legend Glove - Men's

Black Diamond Legend Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 23, 2012

I really wanted to like these gloves; mostly leather construction, Gore-Tex, a nice roomy cuff, cool style. In the end they didn't fit the way I wanted and seemed too warm for most ski days. To be fair, the gloves are rated for -15F to +15F. Four stars to not bring the rating down because they do seem like very nice gloves.

Great pack

Osprey Packs Variant 37 Backpack - 2075-2441cu in

Osprey Packs Variant 37 Backpack - 2075-2441cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2012

Not a lot new to say, other reviewers covered it well, but this pack is perfect for me. Long alpine routes, touring, cragging, whatever I'm doing this is my go-to pack. Although it was holding up well after a year of hard use, I destroyed it in a fall in RMNP. The pack actually absorbed a lot of the force and probably saved me from serious injury. Osprey's warranty is amazing and they replaced it, no problem. Nothing but good things to say about the pack and Osprey's customer service.

Carharts for the slopes

Marmot Freerider Pant - Men's

Marmot Freerider Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2012

Great pants, well made and comfortable. Definitely a roomy cut but not overly steezy. The outer fabric is super burly, one of the heaviest weight fabrics I've seen used with GoreTex. This does make them pretty heavy and fairly warm but I think that's a plus for resort/sidecountry skiing which is what they're made for. I have these and the Freerider Jacket and I absolutely love them together.

6'1" 32/34 185#, Medium fits great.

Great lightweight glove

Marmot Spring Glove

Marmot Spring Glove

Rating for this product: 4 May 8, 2012

Really nice gloves. The leather's really supple and grips well and the softshell fabric on the back of the hand breathes well. These keep my hands warm while hiking/skinning down to about 20F (maybe lower but I haven't tested them that cold), but because they are thin I'll get cold hands when carrying an axe at those temps. I think it's a good balance of insulation and dexterity though; I can put on and adjust my crampons without taking these gloves off. My only complaint is that water seems to get through the seams when the day warms up and the snow gets wet, I assume because the seams aren't taped. Generally a minor issue as I'm usually on my way out by the time this happens. Bottom line, I lost my first pair of these and I'm buying another pair, no hesitation.

Awesome

La Sportiva Trango Extreme Evo Light GTX - Men's

La Sportiva Trango Extreme Evo Light GTX - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2011

Great boots, light enough to hike a long approach without tiring me out and stiff and warm enough to spend all day on snow and ice afterward. On my first non-break-in outing with these I was foolish enough to skip the gaiters as I wasn't expecting deep snow...of course by the end of the hike I'd gotten so much snow over the tops of the boots that my socks were TOTALLY saturated and I could wring them out! However my feet were still warm on that 15 degree day thanks to these boots and quality socks.

FWIW I sized up a half size over the new Makalus because of the narrower last.

Solid Ski Pants

Marmot Spire Pant - Men's

Marmot Spire Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 22, 2011

Really nice pants. Well suited for resort skiing and the full zip lets you vent as much as you want for backcountry skinning. My only complaint is that the fabric is not particularly hard-wearing, I have visible scuffs and a few small tears in the outer fabric on the seat and other areas from minor falls and such. Definitely not something I'd wear mountaineering but comfortable and stylish for skiing.

Sizing: 6'1", 32/34, 180#, size medium fits perfectly.

Marmot Spire Pant - Men's

February 1, 2011

Hi Bill, I'm 6'1" 185, 32/32 or 34 and I just picked up a pair of mediums that fit perfectly. I tried on the large and felt they were pretty baggy around the waist. Hope this helps.
