Mammut Infinity Climbing Rope - 9.5mm

January 7, 2012

No, not too thin for an ATC (though it will make your heart pound the first couple times you use it). With any purchase, I'd say to test the gear out at home before you go outside with it so there aren't any surprises when you really need it. On that note, I don't use my 9.5 as much because I'm climbing mostly on sharp granite on moderate trad routes, which leads to a lot of abrasion. I'm happier with my 9.8 or even a 10.2, especially if it's getting used A LOT. Save this guy for redpointing and hard sport routes!

Osprey Packs Argon 110 Backpack - 6700-7100cu in

January 7, 2012

Zach,

In terms of size, this pack would probably do quite well, being in the over 5000 cu in category. You could (but probably should not) go smaller depending on how often you plan to re-supply and how much you're willing to give up in exchange for weight savings. Do you have any specific concerns?

PS if you're traveling with a partner, you can share group gear and save on overall weight.

Norrøna Falketind Gore-Tex Pro Shell Jacket - Men's

November 9, 2011

Bow,

The Gore-tex pro shell is a slightly textured nylon hardshell material. It feels more like a rain jacket, but not the super slippery variety you often find. It is not a soft shell, but it breathes pretty darn well and is bomb-proof. I find it to be more 'stiff' when folded while still moving and breathing nicely during high-output activities like ice climbing.

Kelty Coyote Backpack - 4750cu in

October 19, 2011

Russell,

Most Kelty backpacks have a pouch in the main pocket for your hydration bladder. This will be on the inner wall of the backpack closest to your body while you're wearing it (water is heavy, and heavy objects are better packed closer to your center of mass). When you pack your bladder, the tube should be on the bottom so it will always be covered in water and you won't be sucking air when you're exhausted and thirsty.

The "snake" is a little harder to find. It's usually a little hole about where your neck should be between that pocket and the outside of the pack, and may be labeled with a little "H2O" or a water droplet. You can sometimes find it offset to one side towards the top seam of the main pocket. My advice, feel around for it until your finger goes through something. It's often covered by a water-resistant top material.

Mad Rock Mad Pad Crash Pad

August 4, 2011

Luk,

The Mad Pad has an extra inch of foam padding and is quite a bit stiffer than the Bailout, which adds a little confidence on high boulder problems where big falls onto uneven terrain are likely. It has the added advantage of backpack straps instead of basic carry handles, and the nylon doesn't pick up much debris like some liners do. It's not as comfy for midday catnaps, but it's a lot of pad for the money.

The North Face Zephyrus Insulated Pullover - Men's

July 23, 2011

Kevin,

What temperatures are you looking at? Primaloft is a great synthetic insulation material which--fun fact--will work even when wet. However as a mid-layer this is not going to be a stand-alone jacket. You will need to layer if the weather gets chilly (think at or below freezing) for an extended period or if things get really wet. This will do well on its own in cool weather (at or above freezing) and under a shell in nasty weather, or if you're getting hot and sweaty in cold weather... The Nano Puff pullover is going to perform very similarly as far as warmth with the main difference being in the shell material and how the insulation is distributed throughout the jacket (I'm not sure if the insulation is sewn into individual compartments on the zephyrus, as with the Nano). Fewer seams means lower likelihood of snagging on brush, etc.

Long story short: this a great light-weight insulating midlayer and will be a powerful tool in your outdoor apparel arsenal. Layer up! A medium should fit great. I'm 5'8", 165 and broad shouldered and will fit into a medium, but I prefer a large.

The North Face Caroline Down Coat - Women's

July 3, 2011

Victoria,

This coat is not 100% waterproof, but it is a very well insulated puffy jacket and will be lightweight and compressible(600-fill down has a very, very high warmth-to-weight ratio). It won't fold into an itty-bitty space like some can, but is much more compressible than other jackets with comparable insulation. This jacket will do very well in blistering wind, freezing temperatures and light snow or rain, but no blizzards or downpours. Down insluation will eventually break down as it gets wet (this takes years) and won't keep you as warm as synthetic down when it does get soaked. I have an 800-fill down and LOVE IT, and have an extra rain layer for when the weather gets particularly nasty.

The easy answer is to buy two coats, one that is super warm and one that keeps you super dry, and alternate as necessary. Or, you can go the route of the technical softshell:

http://www.backcountry.com/womens-softshell-jackets

These will be more waterproof and offer some insulation, though not as much as down.

Five Ten Project Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Project Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 3 May 21, 2011

Just got these in the mail yesterday, so I'll update my review as these babies break in...

Right away I was struck by the sharpness and precision these shoes offer, even from a visual standpoint. This is my first pair of five ten shoes and I'm happy to see they've left out all the frills in exchange for more thrills. I bought this at my street shoe size (8.5) and could juuust squeeze my foot in. I have a wide toe box and these are a narrow shoe, but my toe barely makes solid contact with the point while my heel is in filling the heel cup, so I don't dare size up. As these have a full-leather upper, I'm hoping they will stretch to accomodate my flipper-shaped feet. The slipper design is easy to get out of but feels secure, and the single velcro strap instills a little confidence that I won't pop out of the shoe during a heel hook or similar maneuver.

Very excited to get climbing in these and try out the Stealth rubber. I've only worn La Sportiva until now.

EDIT: After a day of bouldering I've decided it isn't worth it for me to wait and see if these shoes will break in to fit my wide toe box. They're simply too narrow while fitting me perfectly length-wise.

I was, however, really psyched by the sensitivity of these shoes. On tiny, slippery holds my old Miuras lacked said sensitivity and I would often slip or miss the toehold entirely. These shoes made me feel much more precise and solid, even though I was in serious pain for most of the session. I'll be searching for a similar shoe with a wider toe box in the future.

Happy trails!

Stoic Microlith Softshell Pant - Men's

Stoic Microlith Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 17, 2011

My first impressions of these pants were pretty bleak. They were SO lightweight, sleek, and comfortable that I was convinced they wouldn't survive a week of my high-flying to crash-and-burn lifestyle. I was so ashamed to own them that I even changed out of them before grabbing a coffee with a climbing buddy.

This is the part where you ask, "So, why 4 stars?"

I went hiking in the rain and fog, slipped and crashed on wet limestone, bushwacked in 80 Fahrenheit on a lengthy approach, stuck it out on an exposed ridge in 25 mile per hour winds, worked the moves on a super-grippy granite boulder traverse... and the Microliths are unscathed, and I'm in much better shape because of it. My temperature was well-regulated, my skin free of cuts and abrasions or moisture, and my legs free to move into whatever hellish position I could find (including the splits, par accident). In short, I'm amazed with how well these pants have performed so far, and look forward to testing them further these coming seasons.

Stoic Merino 200 Boxer Brief – Men’s

Stoic Merino 200 Boxer Brief – Men’s

Rating for this product: 4 May 15, 2011

Weekend climbing trips keep the proverbial fire burning when life gets dull. These boxer briefs keep it burning even when the forecast calls for four inches of suck all over your weekend.

I'm glad I sized down on these: the material stretches comfortably and gives plenty of support in all the right places. Crotch a little low? Waist riding high? Pull up at the hips and down on the waistband. The seams don't chafe when they bunch. As a recent convert to wool products, I'm endlessly amazed at merino's versatility. These kept me equally comfortable on a hot-and-sticky bouldering trip in Fort Collins and during a water-logged, 40-ish Fahrenheit weekend in Glenwood Canyon. While I'm not completely convinced these are odor-resistant, I appreciate the added comfort where synthetic undergarments are lacking. Finally, at $45 a pop, I'm glad these are 4-season worthy and pray they stand up to the test of time.

CAMP USA Dyneema Tri Cam - 0.5-2.0

May 9, 2011

Mike,

These tri cams are completely different from the cams you already own. They ARE useful, especially the smaller sizes, and are worth looking into. Spend a lot of time practicing with them, as they can be difficult to place and you want to KNOW when to use them.

Personally, I wish I had gotten a set of hexes before I invested in any of these guys. They're nifty, but not very versatile.

Metolius PAS w/out Carabiner

May 5, 2011

Unk,

Absolutely! There are a ton of ways you could implement this piece, from anchor-building to extending a rappel and racking gear. It has all the benefits of a daisy chain (which every climber should have) minus the obvious dangers (see THIS: http://backcountrybeacon.com/2011/04/daisy-chain-dangers/) I'm sure you could come up with a few of your own uses for the PAS, too. When you find them, please share them with the greater community.

I, for example, always leave an extra loop at the far end of the PAS open when I'm clipping into an anchor, and use that as a safe handle for moving around or hanging extra gear on multipitch routes and cleaning.

Patagonia Tres Jacket - Women's

May 5, 2011

Sarah,

This jacket will work for casual resort skiing. However, if you plan on skiing more aggressively or in serious powder then you'll want to look into something ski-specific with more waterproofing, elastic cuffs, a powder skirt; things that make getting down and snowy less uncomfortable. You may want to look at something more like this:

More snow-specific features, more comfort, and still stylin'

Stoic Welder Lo Softshell - Men's

Hey all,

I see a lot of posts on how this jacket holds up in the wind, rain and snow. How does it perform in warmer weather? Late spring-early fall? Also, how big are the pockets? Would I be able to fit a large camera body and/or lens in them?

All good points, but the sleeves are long enough that they should cover your hands, right? On a similar note, as a photographer I'd love to see some fatty chest pockets on this jacket (or any jacket) that I can stuff camera and lenses into when the weather gets foul.

SmartWool Trekking Heavy Crew Sock

May 2, 2011

Ryan,

I agree with Eli: they're a little warm for summer months. Check out the Icebreaker mid crew sock (http://www.backcountry.com/icebreaker-hike-mid-crew-sock-mens) for something with a little (less) cushion that you won't cook in. I own a light crew pair and love them, and other reviewers have said they outlast smartwool by a longshot (and they're cheaper, to boot).

Stoic Merino 200 Bottom - 3/4-Length - Men's

May 2, 2011

Wafflecone,

I have the full-length version of these pants and have worn them cycling a few times. The only thing I noticed was that the crotch was roomy compared to my cycling shorts, and bunched on one side or the other. It never caused me much of a problem as far as chafing; Merino is pretty soft, and the seams are low-profile. Very warm, and worth their weight in gold.

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

April 26, 2011

min,

In most cases I would recommend that you size up on a jacket if you are uncertain about sizing because it gives more coverage and layering options. However, since you know you fit in a large and OR tends to run big, I think a large will suit you just fine. As always, if you're unhappy with the fit, backcountry.com is really good about prompt returns on sizing issues, and will be more than happy to get you the size you need (I know this is a pain, but it's better than wearing a jacket that doesn't fit for all time).

Black Diamond Trail Compact Trekking Pole

April 26, 2011

akp,

This is more of an all-terrain trekking pole and lacks snow cups, and is less suited for snow. I've been using the Black Diamond Traverse Ski Pole as a winter/all-terrain crossover pole (the snow cups are removable) for two seasons now and love them:

http://www.backcountry.com/black-diamond-traverse-ski-poles

If you're getting into the backcountry, you may want to consider a pole that acts as an avalanche probe, such as the this one:

Keep looking for something you like. There are a lot of really cool poles out there with a million and one features that are worth checking out.

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

Rating for this product: 3 April 19, 2011

Brute force and ignorance always overcome science and knowledge. This knife proves it. In summary:

Japanese AUS 8 tool steel is usually reserved for larger knives and results in tougher construction and better edge-retention, but a larger profile less-suited for delicate tasks like cutting a block of cheddar into thin slices or skinning furry animals. The nylon handle is lighter but less durable than most metals and when it breaks, it shatters. I also really dislike the finger grooves, especially on a knife this small.

The locking mechanism deserves its own discussion. The logic behind including a safety that keeps the knife open but NOT closed escapes me. Yes, it gives you a little more security while cutting, but others have mentioned on this site that the knife opens on its own quite frequently. That's like carrying a loaded gun that likes to decide it's time to go off every once in a while.

I'll admit, I'm very happy with this knife, as I got it cheaply in place of a knife I lost but preferred. It WORKS and I'm not concerned with it breaking or needing much maintenance in the near future, but I'd be a little disappointed if I'd purchased it at full price.

La Sportiva Solution Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe

April 13, 2011

Rusty,

As with all things shoe and climbing related, it depends. The Solution is a hyper-aggressive shoe with extra rubber on the point of the toe for bouldering and climbing on, well, basically nothing. But I wouldn't recommend sticking your foot into a crack with this shoe on, ever. Pain and misery all over the place. The arrowhead, while still very aggressive and not much better for crack climbing per-se, its unlined leather upper is going to conform to your foot much more over time, rather than your foot conforming to your shoe. More importantly than any of THAT, however, is whether or not the shoe fits in the first place. Go to a gear shop, try a couple sizes in each, go home and think about it, then buy them here.

Val,

Being upwards of 5000 cubic inches, this pack is a monster and is equipped to carry everything you need for an extended expedition. As such, it's pretty darn big once you've filled it. I have a 3000 cu-in pack that baaaaarely meets carry-on requirements when it's full, and only on most airlines (United is getting more and more picky these days). If you need to use this as a carry-on, just don't pack it to capacity and then cinch every single strap on this thing down until it fits where you need it to go.

The North Face Leonidas Jacket - Men's

April 2, 2011

cph,

This jacket is going to be pretty much the same as your Arc'Teryx Alpha LT, just with slightly different fit. Since you want something as a summer, alpine piece, try a softshell that suits your needs (with or without hood, insulation, etc). Softshells are much better at keeping you cool during aerobic activity without losing much waterproofing (though they rarely perform as well against downpours as a good hardshell like your Alpha)

La Sportiva Miura VS Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe

April 1, 2011

Ben,

I have the velcro and was actually thinking about switching to laces... I like that I can don them and doff them quickly with the velcro and make quick adjustments when blood stops flowing to specific digits. I did manage to rip the end tab off one of the straps, which has been a pain ever since, and I've heard of friends whose velcro wore out very quickly. I've tried on some laces in the store but a half-size larger, and the fit is very similar.

Anything in particular you really liked about the laces?

Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack - 4149-4638cu in

March 25, 2011

Another great option that's a little cleaner than rubber bands and not so permanent as resorting to scissors would be lengths of elastic Velcro to hold the rolled/folded up ends closer to the body of the pack. I know Camelbak did this with their M.U.L.E. backpack and it works great. Sew or glue a length of Velcro a few inches long at the ends of the loose strands at a 90 degree angle, roll the loose ends back on themselves, and close the Velcro around them and around the waist strap (make sure you try this before attaching the Velcro permanently; you want to make sure it's facing the right direction)

A little labor-intensive, but very effective.

Arc'teryx Silo 40 Backpack - 2319-2746cu in

March 14, 2011

Eric,

This pack will do really well for weekend trips and overnighters. On the trail this summer, if you're traveling in a larger group and have a lot of "group gear" ie gear that everybody can use and only one person needs to carry, like pots and pans and tents, etc. this may work if you pack light (and I mean LIGHT). Depends on how long you're gonna be out there and how many changes of underwear you want to bring along. If you'll be out there more than a week and with a small group, look at "expedition packs" at the following address:

http://www.backcountry.com/expedition-packs-5000-cu-in

Or, if you still want to go the way of the light-weight packer, look at week-long packs here:

http://www.backcountry.com/weeklong-packs-over-4500-cu-in

You can find a lot of bags in a similar price range (Arc'teryx is pretty luxury stuff) that are still durable and light(ish) weight. As a college student I totally understand wanting to save on quality gear, and this is a great place to do it. Steepandcheap.com has had some good deals on great packs lately as well.
