The North Face Venture Pant - Mens

The North Face Venture Pant - Mens

Rating for this product: 4 December 9, 2010

These pants are "certainly worth the money." If you are looking for a decent pair of entry level rain pants to keep you dry without breaking the bank, this a nice place to start. There has been a little debate as far as how well the Ripstop nylon holds up..While glissading might be a little intense for such an inexpensive pair of pants, I do believe that they would hold up well without such..rigorous use. While I have no way to prove this, other than just eyeballing the material, I think they could sustain plenty of backcountry hikes-which is what I am looking for. As for the waterproofness of the material, I can personally vouch for it. Paired with a Precip jacket, I withstood an assault of Super Soakers as my brother and his friends helped me test North Face's claims of waterproofness. These would certainly hold up to many a rainstorm, and I have no doubts about that.

They have a great fit, and I would definitely recommend them. Just understand that you get what you pay for. This is not gore-tex, but it does fend of water-induced hypothermia without feeling like you're wearing a trash bag. Personally, I like them. Especially at this price.

Made a Return..

Mountain Hardwear Mesa Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Mesa Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 9, 2010

I read all the enthusiastic reviews, and decided I was onboard with these pants. I ordered them, and they arrived super quickly. Much to my dismay, they didn't work out for me.
Here's the breakdown:
+Felt super comfortable on skin
+Material seems to be high quality
+TONS of pockets
+Got water on them, it beaded up and rolled off

-2 front pockets cut weird, not deep (mentioned in a review before mine..)
-odd internal belt.. there's a first loop directly left of the button, which much be for a carabiner w/ keys or something.
-this means no option to add your own belt.
-I'm a bigger guy (apprx. 36" waist.) The leg opening at the bottom of the pant was too big for my taste. I can see the straight cut on a smaller size being acceptable, but it's kind of goofy at a larger size.

With much internal debate, I decided to send them back. Hopefully I can save other short stocky guys from making the same $6.99(shipping back) mistake as me. I have no doubt that they are great pants though, and Backcountry (as always) provided fantastic customer support and worked it all out, no problems.

Patagonia Capilene 3 Crew - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 3 Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2010

Awesome awesome awesome base layer up top. Keeps you warm when you need it. Which is pretty often when winter decides to roll around.

The best way to describe it:
so comfortable, you forget it's there. without it, you'd wish you had it.

Cap 3 is the perfect choice for people looking for a moisture wicking, heat retaining base to stand up to below freezing temps. It wicks sweat like a charm, which is literally a lifesaver in super cold weather. I've spent plenty of trips wondering how I would make it without my beloved capilene base layers. You might initially be turned off by the price, but they are worth every penny. Patagonia makes a fantastic product; it's incredibly comfortable, it works extremely well, and it is beyond durable. I highly recommend this.

Ultimate Warmth

Patagonia Capilene 4 Bottom - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 4 Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2010

Look no further for a base layer to fend off Old Man Winter. Even with 0 activity, these things keep you super toasty. I coupled them with a pair of fruit of the loom long johns and a pair of jeans, and sat for 3 hours in a deer stand at about 25° F. While I didn't manage to land a trophy buck that morning, another thing I didn't catch was a cold. I imagine that if I were generating some body heat, these would keep me warm down to zero, and beyond! They fit great, they hold up well, they don't get funky, they are an all around FANTASTIC product.

Patagonia Heavyweight Mountaineering Sock

Patagonia Heavyweight Mountaineering Sock

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2010

These socks are fantastic. They were the answer to the many prayers from atop my cold, windy deer stand. I did not have to layer with these like I had to do with other socks. Just one pair kept my feet toasty, dry, and comfortable. They are the softest sock I have ever worn, they have unmatched warmth, and I foresee them lasting me a very, very long time. They are another item typical of the quality I have come to expect from Patagonia.

*Make sure to check the sizing chart before you order. They run true to size, but you don't want to end up with more or less sock than you need.

Costa Del Mar Triple Tail Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens

December 1, 2010

Bigs,

I would recommend paying a visit to your local optometrist. I've done approximately an 18 month stint in optometry, and the best thing I can tell you is to visit a professional. Call around to see which offices carry Costa Del Mar frames, or stop in and take a look at the frame selection they have at hand.

One problem I can tell you when putting prescription lenses in sunglasses is that most "sporty" sunglasses frames, such as these or nike, have some degree of wrap. This is what gives them a sportier look and what keeps them on your face. A lens blank (what the lens is cut from to go into the frames) is centered and has a flat base. This leads to a prescription being off center and warped inside the frame due to the wrap. Essentially, your prescribed lens no longer lets you see clearly, because of the way your eyes process the light. There are certain ways that this can be compensated for, but generally its easier to do with progressive lenses than with bi-focals. I would look into this if I were you.

If you choose to take this route, you'd be right in choosing glass lenses. They are heavier than plastic, but they are more scratch resistant and they show better clarity. And nothing beats polarized lenses to eliminate glare. You're looking at an expensive proposition, due to the RX lenses, but it is entirely worth it. A solid pair of glasses designed for outdoor use will last you a lifetime and come in handy in nearly every situation you encounter.

Osprey Packs Talon 33 Backpack - 1900-2000cu in

Osprey Packs Talon 33 Backpack - 1900-2000cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2010

I've had the Osprey Talon 33 backpack for almost a year. Needless to say, I've put it through the wringer.

Most recently, I took this pack on a 3 day camping trip in the Smoky Mountains. Paired with the Osprey-specific rain cover, this bad boy stood up to the test of rain, mud, streams, and the occasional fall. There was just enough room for the three day trip (tent split between me and a friend, sleeping bag, no stove.) In addition to the essentials, I was able to take a compact fishing pole, an axe for fire wood, a spare knife, dried foods, etc. While I did carry my enormous nalgene water bottle, I also carried a 2L water bladder (chosen over a larger size for space and weight reasons.) Everything held together, and was surprisingly comfortable.

The pack handled everything very well. Covering several miles a day, the pack was able to keep up quite nicely. With just a little planning, and a compression sack or two, I was able to turn this into a multi-day pack. While I took somewhat of a minimalist approach, the utilization of space kept me from lugging more pack than I needed to through the woods.

I could not recommend this pack highly enough. Mine still looks great, even with all the miles I've put on it. It is designed to last, and if it doesn't, Osprey has a fantastic lifetime warranty policy. Do yourself a favor and buy this backpack today.

Stohlquist DRIFTer Personal Flotation Device

November 29, 2010

Why yes, Nancy, it is. I'm so glad you asked that. The fit of the DRIFTer PFD is not gender specific, and I have verified this via the sizing chart and the Stohlquist website. It runs true to size, so be sure to get an accurate measurement across the chest (33-39=S/M, 40-46=L/XL, etc.) According to an earlier review, this PFD is actually preferred by many women to other "women's specific" PFDs. I hope this information helps!

Another Hit with the Capilene Series

Patagonia Capilene 2 Bottom - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 2 Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2010

I can wear these in any sort of weather. I love that they keep me warm without breaking into a sweat, yet comfortably cool when the mercury starts to rise. They do what they're supposed to, and they do it well. Don't waste time or money trying anything else. This underwear is wicked comfortable, comparable only to leather chaps made from clouds, delivered from the heavens. By Hermes. Seriously. The GladiOdor works like a charm. The fit is fantastic.

I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Tell your friends, tell your mother, tell your brother, tell your grandma. Get them in these pants.

But not like that.

Patagonia Capilene 2 Crew - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 2 Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2010

This thing is comfortable in all sorts of weather. It keeps you warm when it's cold, and cool when it's hot. When you start getting active, the material kicks right in instantly wicking the sweat. People rave about the Patagonia Capilene line, and with good reason. I've been wearing it for a year, and the fabric barely shows signs of wear! It does what it's supposed to, and it does it well. It is "my go-to base layer," every time. The shirt is wicked comfortable, comparable only to a chest plate made from the hide of Cerberus, forged by Prometheus himself. It's that warm too.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Tell your friends, tell your mother, tell your brother, tell your grandma.
