Marmot Baffin Insulated Jacket - Men's

February 9, 2011

Jules,
The MH is going to be a good bit heavier, if that matters to you. The MH will resists tearing, rips and the like better but it will not be at all water resistant. the Marmot will do a better of job of shedding light water, though as you may know synthetic still maintains its warmth fairly well even when wet. as for warmth, there isnt much difference. It comes down to what it will be sued for, if it is going to take a beating i say MH but if it is going to be for use under a jacket and or just walking around, marmot may be the ticket

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 10, 2010

Bmac, its a unique fit in my opinion. its short in length (so it fits well under a shell), but not to terribly then that you wont fit anything under it. it has a nice tapered fit. i am 5'10 170 and a medium fits just snug enough. has a little room but not puffy by any means. i have a better sweater and i would say in with (around the chest and stomach) it is very similar, though the better sweater is longer booth in the sleeves and in the torso. the arms are also slightly roomier in the puff to accommodate layers under it.

Marmot Power Stretch Half-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

October 20, 2010

mbolang2259811, it really depends on how you want it to fit. If you are just going to be wearing this over a base layer like a cap and for lounging around the house then i believe a L should be just fine for you. if you go for a XL the sleevs will be rather long and there will be significant bulking up around the mid section. however, if you are going to be wearing this over more than a layer or 2 i would say you may think about the XL, but i think the L should suit you just fine as it does have a good amount of stretch to it.

Patagonia R4 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Patagonia R4 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 19, 2010

i bought another one of these just a few weeks ago, and it is my second R4. i love my first and wouldnt have bough another were it not for the fact that i recently have been living in the city and needed a jacket that i could just throw on and feel guaranteed in the wind proofing and the warmth factor. my older one was simply getting worn and not the prettiest looking anymore haha. i love this jacket, it is incredibly warm and truly is windproof. i can honestly wear this with just a t-shirt or plain old cotton long sleeve underneath in temps that are at or below freezing. it is that warm. to warm infact for any winter hiking on the east coast that i have experienced. i own a patagonia down sweater and it gets very little use other than on the coldest days while snowboarding (under a shell). this jacket has simply replaced the need for that jacket on most occasions.

that said this design does have its flaws. when trying this on i saw that it dodnt have the draw string on the wast and the cuffs around the wrists were a little loose. i said "whatever, how much of a difference can it possibly make!?" well i must say that it does have an effect. it was cold and VERY windy this weekend in Tremblant (a little vacation) and i saw a difference between this new R4 and my old one. it wasnt that it was less warm so much as occasionally i would get a blast of cold air in my midsection and it was uncomfortable and unnerving. i know i am nit picking but it does make a difference when you personally are on the line.

all things considered though i would make the purchase again. it is a great jacket, does all that it is supposed to do and more. but i would tell you this, if you have the opportunity to pick up an older version with the draw string at the wast, or can afford to wait until next years model to see if they will revert back to their old ways that i would suggest doing it. but if not dont worry! this jacket will serve you extraordinarily well!

i love it and for the life of me cant understand why more people dont pick this up, it looks incredible, feels incredible (my girlfriend is a HUGE fan) and last forever. pull the trigger, doooo itttttt!

Columbia Lhotse Mountain Parka - Men's

October 19, 2010

Jang, this jacket is going to be pretty darn waterproof, though it is not gore. this means it wont stand up to all day downpours, though i doubt that is what you are looking for. if you need a jacket for left access skiing then this will be just fine. the reason i say lift access is that this wont be very breathable when it comes to skinning or long treks up the mtn. i would like to suggest however that you look at a jacket like the marmot Morzine. it will be a little better quality than the Columbia and will provide just as much waterproofing as well as better breath ability. the only difference is that it isnt seam sealed. though if you need this for what i imagine you do that wont be an issue.

sorry BC, i wanted to buy another 1/4 zip but unfortunately you don't carry it... had to go elsewhere to buy one. you should really get on that, its a terrific piece. i gave 5 stars for the better sweater, but i would give BC 1 star for not having it, somewhat frustrating that i have to give someone else my business...

Patagonia Guide Softshell Jacket - Men's

October 18, 2010

Just posted this on the Talus page but figured i would post here as well...is there a significant difference in warmth between this and the Talus jacket? i want a soft shell that is reasonably warm on its own. basically looking for just wind resistance, durability and somewhat water repellent. a priority is placed on durability though. any suggestions. if it helps im 5'10 175 and prefer a jacket that isnt form fitting but isnt terribly baggy either. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (i already have windproof soft shells and water proof soft shells, just looking for something in between basically.

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 18, 2010

i picked one of these up last fall and used it relentlessly during the fall, winter and spring. it got the most use of any jacket i own last winter besides my shell. it cuts the fiercest of winds and does pretty darn well in snow and light rain as well. i got mine a little larger so i could throw a cap and light fleece under it or simply a hoody if im just out in DC. it isnt the warmest by itself but put something under it and you will be toasty, guaranteed! the durability is incredible as well, it took some serious abuse and still functions flawlessly. there are a few burns on it from stray embers and some stains from putting it through the ringer but i like it better this way, it has some character now, and holds a special place in my heart

Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2010

great memories wit these boots. they have taken me many places and have seen many things. and one thing is for sure, they have never let me down. i had to get them resoled as i wore out the bottoms, but that is in no way a negative, it in fact means these shoes i built to last a lifetime, as the uppers are perfectly broken in and still look great. they carry 60 lbs no problem both up hill and down, and are truly waterproof. they are not meant for heat though, as your feet will get very hot and sweaty if you in hot temps. also not the best when it comes to wet rocks, but hey, thats not what they are meant for. i love these boots and would recommend them to anyone. never attempt a back country trip without them!!

ohh yeah this bag will work. a 33lb weight limit is the only limiting factor here. you could easily fit twice that in the large and the XL is about the size of a minivan. i would say go with a medium or large. unless you packing for 2 months in India there really is no need for the XL

just had this thing out on my bike for some trail riding. it was chilly, windy and rainy for most of my ride and worked wonders for me. after cinching the neck up it was great. kept the draft out, and stopped the rain from getting down my back/chest. i loved how there was no hood flapping around and the stretch in it is sick! i cant wait to get a pack on and see how it holds up to a couple nights in the mountains.

Patagonia R4 Fleece Jacket - Men's

September 30, 2010

it does have a slim waist line and it fairly stretchy actual. though i will say this it is tough to size right. the large was right for me in the chest and left enough room for a cap base layer underneath but was not as tight as i would have liked at the waist, and the medium was perfect at the waist but no quite roomy enough for me as i wanted to be able to wear something underneath if i had to. i went with the large and figured i would deal with a little draft if it came up, but over all im happy with it, the stretch is decent enough for me, though a cinch would have been better

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2010

for the life of me i cant understand how anyone could give this anything less than 5 stars. this jacket does it all. i spent a week in Algonquin park Ontario with this thing and i think that we may have had a combined 24 hours where it didnt rain. i have spent much of my life hiking, traveling, and mountaineering and this was the most rain i have ever had in a week. everything was soaked, it was impossible to keep things dry, but i have to say that not a drop of water got through this jacket, it is impeccable. the finest quality and materials. the craftsmanship is unsurpassed and it will last forever. when i walked out of the park it was unrecognizable as an arc'teryx jack there was so much mud on it, but i threw it in the washer and hung it out to dry and i swear you could bag it up and sell it as new, it was still in perfect condition. after more than a week of bushwacking and just beating the hell out of it i expected scrapes and blemishes, but could find nothing wrong with it. i feel confident in saying that no other jacket could do what this did. if you can afford it this is worth its weight in gold. i have owned a lot of jackets in my day but this is simply the best. pull the trigger, you wont regret it
