The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 1525 - 9460cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 25, 2012

I bought this bag specifically for a trip to China because I knew I'd need a bag that could hold a lot of stuff . . . it worked great for the trip, and I know I'll also be getting a lot of good use out of it in the future. The bright green color is nice for recognizing it right away at the baggage claims. The bag is extremely durable and holds a ton of stuff (I got the large size). The handles on the sides are really handy, and the backpack straps are nice for lugging it around. I took the backpack straps off and kept them inside the bag every time I checked it for a flight, but I don't know if that was really necessary.

I highly recommend this bag and I'm thinking about getting a medium-sized one for smaller trips.

Stoic Merino 150 Bliss Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino 150 Bliss Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 5, 2011

I got this shirt off SAC back in June and I love it. I wear it for running - it's really nice because it feels dry even when I'm sweating and it doesn't get too hot, especially with the zipper. I wore it for a half marathon a couple weeks ago (with arm warmers underneath because it was kinda cold) and it was great. It seems to regulate temperature really well, because in the cooler weather it keeps me warm enough and in the hot weather it actually seems to keep me cooler. It does look pretty "technical" so I don't usually wear it for casual wear, but I've been known to on a few occasions. I got the blue color (I can't remember if it was called "denim" or "navy") and it's a nice bright blue. I don't usually use the pocket but it would be good for a gu or maybe chapstick or a key or something. Personally, I don't think I'd pay full price for this shirt, but that's probably just because I'm cheap. So if you're like me, look for it on SAC and you'll be glad you did.

Blurr Alpha Pant

Blurr Alfa Pant - Men's

Blurr Alfa Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 5, 2011

I got a pair of these off SAC back in July and I wear them every chance I get because I love them so much. I'm a chick but I got the men's small and they fit me great. They are so comfortable and have some stretch - they're great for hiking, but I also wear them for everyday use because they don't look too "technical" and they go with lots of stuff. My husband was jealous so I bought him a pair (L in the "clay" color) a few weeks ago and he loves his too! I figured that they would be a little long for him and I was right - the inseam is pretty long, but I can hem them. My husband wears his to school a lot (he's a middle school teacher) and they look nice with a polo shirt or sweater. We find that after a week or so of wearing them they will stretch out a little, but when they get washed and go through the dryer, they shrink back to a better fit.

So, yes, like other reviews have said, the inseam is kinda long, but I guess that's the way it has to be when they're only available in S,M,or L and not specific inseam lengths. Better too long than too short. But the reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because that silly built-in adjustable strap thing doesn't work. I wish the pants had belt loops, then they would be perfect.

I like this tool

CRKT Zilla Jr. Multi-Tool

CRKT Zilla Jr. Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 4 July 21, 2011

I got this off SAC about a month ago and I've carried it in my pocket every day since. I've found a lot of uses for it, but mainly I really use the knife and the pliers. The knife is nice and sharp and easy to open. The pliers, likewise, are easy to use because they're so handy - you don't have to unfold anything to get to them. I keep this tool in my pocket using the pocket clip and I don't even notice it's there (I don't use the case that it came with). Like others have said, the screwdriver is a bit awkward, but I haven't lost the bits yet and I have used both the standard and philips several times. The screwdriver feature isn't really any weirder to use than one on a Leatherman or Gerber. All in all, this is a great tool for when you're out working on stuff and something comes up where you need pliers, a knife, or a screwdriver. I can't comment on the wire cutters or bottle opener yet.

Got these socks for my husband and he likes them. He wears them working out and says they wick nicely and don't make his feet feel wet. I think they'd work well for running too. And they look pretty cool.

Nice Shirt

Columbia Silver Ridge Half-Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Columbia Silver Ridge Half-Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 19, 2011

I got this shirt from SAC a couple weeks ago and really like it! I'm 5'9 and got the medium and it fits great except it's pretty short at the waist and I don't have an especially long torso or anything. The sleeves are nice and long though so it's fine. The black/shale is what I ordered and either they sent me the wrong color, or it's way different than the picture. It's a very nice grey color, definitely not black at all. I actually like the color better anyway.
This shirt dries quick and it's nice and light and packs down very small. I can tell I'll be getting a lot of good use out of it!

Didn't work for me . . .

GoLite Hydroswift Lumbar Pack - Women's

GoLite Hydroswift Lumbar Pack - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 June 18, 2011

I got this lumbar pack and tried it out on a few shorter runs, but unfortunately it just didn't work for me so I had to send it back. It looks very well made and I wish it would have worked out. The problem was that I just couldn't get it so it wouldn't ride up as I was running. I would cinch it up as tight as I possibly could around my hips, but after maybe 1/4 to 1/2 mile it would be creeping up around my waist and bouncing all around so I'd have to stop and tighten it up again. I really did give it a fair chance, but I just couldn't figure out a way to get it to stay put and it was very frustrating. Maybe I have a strange shaped body or something, I don't know. Like I said, this thing is obviously very well-made and I think it could work for other women - just not me. The water bottles are very nice.

Stoic Breathe 150 T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 24, 2011

I just got this shirt last week, and I've worn it a lot just kickin' around town and also on one hike so far. It breathes really well and is very comfortable. I got the navy, and I love the color. The fit is great. The shirt itself is long enough but not too long and I like the thumb holes on the sleeves. The sleeves are long enough that when you put your thumbs through the holes they're still long enough to move your arms around comfortably. So I don't think the sleeves are too long at all - when I don't have my thumbs through the holes I just push up the sleeves a little and they're fine. Some other reviews have commented about the quality of the material. To me, it seems good so far, but I can see where it would snag easily, although I haven't had a problem with that yet. I guess I'll update my review if it starts to unravel like some people have mentioned.
I'm a chick, but I bought the men's shirt because I don't like the sissy colors like teal and pink and stuff that they always have for the ladies' versions of these things. I'm 5'9 and 145 lbs and the small fits great. It was on sale, but still expensive. I don't usually spend $33.00 for a lightweight shirt, but I think this one was worth it.

I love this goat shirt! I got the heather brown one with the orange goat and it looks just like the colors in the picture. The organic cotton is soft and comfy. I'm a chick - 5'9 and 145 lbs, and I got the small and it fits great.

Sits too high on head

Sunday Afternoons Sprinter Cap

Sunday Afternoons Sprinter Cap

Rating for this product: 2 March 3, 2011

Maybe I have a funny shaped head or something, but this cap did not work for me. I wore it on a couple of runs and it didn't stay on my head very well, especially if a breeze came up and caught it just right. If I tightened it too much, then it just squeezed my head and still had the same problems. The problem, for me, was that the main part of the hat wasn't "deep" enough, making it sit too high on my head. I couldn't get it to sit low enough on my head to feel like it would stay without having to cinch it up real tight. Also, the brim seemed ridiculously wide and flat.

However, I liked how it was lightweight and breathable. But it just didn't work for me so I sent it back. Backcountry.com is amazing in their return policy and so easy to work with. I'll definitely be buying more gear from backcountry, but just not this particular cap.

Questionable zipper quality

Terramar Softshell Jacket - Women's

Terramar Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 7, 2011

First of all, the color (green) is nice and looks like the on-screen photo in the description. The fit is pretty good. I got a medium, which is my normal size, and it's definitely not too big; in fact, the sleeves are a little shorter than I'd like. I wear this with a merino (Stoic bliss) baselayer and it works great for running in cold temps in the teens.

My main complaint is that the zippers seem cheap and they don't work very well. The main zipper is okay, but it gets stuck at the bottom all the time. The small zippers on the handwarmer pockets and the sleeve pocket leave a lot to be desired. They unzip okay, but then they're really hard to zip back up and I feel like they're going to break soon and I haven't even had the jacket that long.

Other than the disappointing zippers, it's a very nice softshell.

Light and warm!

Stoic Merino 150 Bliss Shirt - Women's

Stoic Merino 150 Bliss Shirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2011

I've never had a merino shirt before, so I was stoked when my husband got me this for Christmas! So far I've worn it a lot - snowshoeing, hiking, and running. It's a great baselayer. I can wear it with just a softshell jacket over the top and stay very comfortable when running even when the temps are in the teens.

I usually wear medium, and the Stoic medium fits great - a nice athletic fit and not baggy. I like that the length is long enough so it doesn't let the cold air in and stays tucked in if I want it to. The thumb holes are nice. The sleeves are *almost* too short for me when I'm using the thumb holes, but I guess I have long arms. I'm gonna be getting a lot of good use out of this shirt for sure!

Oh, one more thing . . . the description mentions a zippered chest pocket, but the womens' version doesn't have a chest pocket. It has a side pocket on the left side. You can see it in the pictures.

Merino Composite Trail Sock

Backcountry.com Merino Composite Trail Sock - 3 Pack

Backcountry.com Merino Composite Trail Sock - 3 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2011

These are great socks. My husband got me the 3-pack for Christmas and so far I've worn them almost every day. They're too short for hiking in the cold weather, in my opinion, so I'll have to wait for the weather to warm up before I use them for a lot of hiking. I've actually been wearing these for running socks even though they're thicker than regular running socks. They've been working great for me for cold-weather running; I just have to lace up my shoes a little looser than usual. The color, lavendar, looks just like in the picture. Not my favorite color, but I guess it doesn't matter for socks.

Cool socks

Backcountry.com SynthTrail Crew Sock - 3-Pack

Rating for this product: 4 September 6, 2010

I use these socks for running and hiking and they're very comfortable and dry. I don't like how every little piece of lint, hair, etc. sticks to them though. Love the goat! And it's kind of cool to have socks designed for right and left feet specifically.

Great pack!

Lowe Alpine Rush 25 Pack - 1500cu in

Rating for this product: 4 September 6, 2010

I tried this pack out today on a short 7 mile day hike. It was great! Somebody had given me a Camelbak hydration reservoir a couple years ago but I never used it because I've never had a pack that was hydration compatible. It worked quite well with this pack. I guess I wish it had a better system to hold the tube of the hydration pack, like maybe some sort of a loop on the top of the shoulder strap or something, but that's really a minor thing. I like all the compression straps on this pack because I didn't have a lot of stuff to carry so I cinched everything up small and it was nice and compact. The pack didn't slide or move around on my back at all. I like that the water bottle holders on the shoulder straps are removable (I removed them today). The pockets on the waist strap are very handy! I'm sure I'll be using this pack for years to come. I love the green color too.

Great hiking shoes!

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 22, 2010

I've had these The North Face Hedgehog GTX shoes for a couple months now and I've used them a lot already. I'm a chick (women's 10) but I ended up getting the men's version (men's 8.5) after trying on several in stores that I went to - the men's just fit my feet better and were more comfortable. I got a good deal from backcountry.com because I got a discontinued color.
They fit great and are comfortable, supportive, fairly breathable, and waterproof. The tread is awesome; it grips really well on rocky trails. I don't like the laces - they're kind of a slippery material that comes untied too easily, but that's a small complaint. These shoes are great for hiking and I also just wear them around town.
