Costa Del Mar Rincon Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens

Costa Del Mar Rincon Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens

Rating for this product: 3 2 days ago

Hard to give these a rating...they are nice sunglasses, and Costa's 580 polarized lenses are superb at cutting glare & improving below-the-surface visibility on the water. But these things are so tiny it seemed like they were kids' shades. They are NOT a medium fit, not even close. Get 'em for you kid & they'll be the envy of the playground.

Pretty Nice Pants

Kavu Mason Pant - Men's

Kavu Mason Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 3, 2012

Picked these up on SAC & like them pretty well. They have an interesting cut, seem to be designed to sit lower on the hips with a mostly straight-legged cut that's a tad skinnier in the legs than most pants I have. Not cut very generous in the rear end department which is fine for me because I have very little junk in my trunk. The waist sizing is accurate if not a little roomy, no need to size up. Plenty long for their waist size, actually just a tad longer than I'd hoped but they work. Construction seems very good & they are comfy. All in all I like 'em and got them for a price that was too good to pass up. If you like pants that sit low with a less roomy (but not full on skinny) fit in the legs then these ought to work.

Excellent Outdoor Shirt

Redington Gasparilla Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Redington Gasparilla Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 9, 2012

Picked up two of these sight-unseen on SAC because the price was great, even though I'd never heard of Reddington. Turns out this is a really great fishing shirt. Very comparable to Columbia quality and better than Bass Pro's house brand for fishing shirts. The quick-drying nylon material is sturdy and comfortable, providing SPF 30 protection. The material isn't super lightweight, more of a medium weight - will do nicely for hiking and roughing it a bit. Venting on the back and shoulders = good airflow & cooling. Plenty of pockets & storage space, rod loop, all the usual features for a fishing shirt. I actually like the fit better than my Columbia fishing shirts as the Reddington isn't quite as oversized - very much true to size. Also, this is a fairly subtle fishing shirt compared to some that overdo the pockets and flaps. All in all a great shirt, and a steal on SAC.

Good Shoe but Not Much Treads

Garmont 9.81 Escape Trail Run Shoe - Men's

Garmont 9.81 Escape Trail Run Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 15, 2011

Got these on SAC for a really great price and am happy with them. After reading other reviews, I ordered a half size up from my regular 11. They are a great fit, but I have a feeling my regular size would have worked too since there's a little extra room with the 11 1/2. Anyway, I love the laces on these - you don't tie them but instead use a sliding plastic clip to tighten & loosen them. They hold great and are really easy to adjust. These were comfortable out of the box and I went for a run without any break in at all, and they felt fine. They look good and seem like standard Garmont quality (which is a good thing).
My only complaint here is the treads. They do have treads but they are very shallow and the bottoms are nearly flat as a result. I would prefer a sole with a bit more of an aggressive tread pattern personally. The soles are, however, good and grippy. Overall a good shoe that wins out on comfort and good looks.

Love 'Em

Garmont Montello Hiking Shoe - Men's

Garmont Montello Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 15, 2011

Picked these up at a deep discount on SAC & couldn't be happier. These are the kind of shoes that could easily handle plenty of outdoor adventure but I'm hesitant because they look so sharp I don't want to put any wear on them. Sizing is accurate for me, and though a little stiff out of the box they didn't require too much wear to start feeling just right. I broke them in on a 5 day trip where they were used as casual wear with lots of walking, and they felt great and handled several days of rainy weather just fine. Haven't done any hiking in them but the treads are substantial and the quality is tops, I expect them to hike well. I can't find anything to complain about here, if you like their looks then go for it - great shoe that's comfortable, well-made, and good looking.

Awesome Jacket

Columbia Berkner Rise Parka - Men's

Columbia Berkner Rise Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 23, 2011

Man I lucked out on this one! Have been looking for a 3-in-1 jacket but the low quality department store ones were too expensive for what you get, and the good ones were way over my budget. Then I picked the Berkner Rise up on sale for a steal, and I love it! Got the deep teal, which is understated and handsome. The quality is top notch down to every last detail. I got the XL and the sleeves run a little long on it - which is perfect for me cause I have longer arms. Almost every Columbia clothing item I own (and I have quite a few) runs on the larger, looser side- not so with the Berkner Rise. It's actually fairly trim, especially in the shoulders, at least when you wear the shell and inner jacket together. Worn solo, each feels just right. Worn together they sit just a wee bit tight in the shoulders but not enough to worry over. Pit vents, generous pockets, sturdy removable hood that holds its shape-lots to love about this jacket. Big thumbs up!

Big and Bad

Kaenon Lewi Sunglasses - Polarized

Kaenon Lewi Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 August 6, 2011

These are the best. I have a large face/head and these fit great, with tall lenses and a nice comfortable roomy wrap frame. If you want small sleek or streamlined these are not for you. They are pretty light for their big size and the optics are off the charts. Kaenon's copper lenses are my favorite because they offer the best contrast, but the gray lenses are best for really bright conditions as they are a bit darker. Either way, the polarization is tops. If you want some quality sunglasses that are beefy and bold, Lewis are it.

Wear 'Em All the Time

Lorpen Merino Light Hiker Sock - 2-Pack - Men's

Lorpen Merino Light Hiker Sock - 2-Pack - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 16, 2011

These hiking socks are so great I wear them all the time. They are indeed lightweight, making them good all around socks - though I would want something thicker for extended use in sub freezing temperatures. They are comfortable and wear much more gently on the skin compared to cotton socks, minimizing the occurrence of blisters. They are tremendous at wicking moisture away from the skin - after running I may be fairly drenched in perspiration, but my feet remain dry in these. And I get zero odor in them even if I wear them for a couple of days straight. They keep the feet warm in cool weather and cool in warm weather. Seriously, these are the best and have pretty much rendered my cotton sock supply unused anymore. Can't go wrong with these.

Great Hydration Solution for the Right Situations

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack - 2L

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack - 2L

Rating for this product: 5 March 16, 2011

I've used various Camelbak products for awhile and the Unbottle is a nice item when needed. It provides a versatile and convenient hydration solution when you don't have a pack that's hydration compatible, or if you want to double up on fluids with an additional reservoir. The Unbottle is very simple: it's a form fitting insulated sleeve for the hydration bladder that has a handle at the top and clips on the sides so the unit can be carried solo or strapped onto an existing pack or gear (or person, I suppose). That's about it. Worth noting that the bladder is removable from the sleeve, and as always Camelbak's bladders, tubes, valves, etc are all top notch. Great item for the niche it fills.

Wife Loves These

KEEN Whisper Slide Sandal - Women's

KEEN Whisper Slide Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 13, 2010

Got these on SAC for my wife on her birthday and she's thrilled with them. They're very attractive and according to her as comfy as any shoes she has. She usually wears an 8 and these fit just fine in that size. She's also commented on how well they're holding up under frequent wear. A big thumbs up from the Mrs!

Great

LEKI Thermolite Trekking Pole

LEKI Thermolite Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 August 16, 2010

Picked 'em up on SAC, right off the bat one of them had a crack in the pole before I ever used them. Called Leki and within 2 days had a replacement pole section delivered to my door. Incredible customer service, couldn't ask for more (and they have a lifetime warranty). Used them on a recent trip to the Rockies and love these poles. I'm 6'2", 220 lbs, and was carrying my 18 month old and these gave me a great boost going up and better control coming down. Really happy with them and Leki's great product support.

Great Value

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season Tent

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season Tent

Rating for this product: 5 May 29, 2010

Really happy with the Zephyr 2. My other tent is a four-man Big Agnes and I would say that the quality is comparable between the two, though the Alps Mountaineering tents are much less expensive. I'm honestly quite impressed with the bang for buck here. Wanted something light enough to pack & carry myself but big enough for me and my 5 year old son, and this fit the bill. It fits easily into my large daypack (32L). The mesh design makes it most useful in fairly mild temperatures. Setup is easy and the fly offers decent vestibule space given the size of the tent. All in all I give the Zephyr 2 a big thumbs up. Grab 'em on SAC and feel good about buying smart.

Great Light...for Some Applications

Mammut Lucido TR1 Headlamp DO NOT USE

Mammut Lucido TR1 Headlamp DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 3 May 19, 2010

Like this light - bright, lightweight, good battery life, uber-simple operation. Only caveat is that the beam is a perfectly round spotlight with no ambient light outside of the circular beam. Not great for tasks where you're really close to the area being illuminated as the beam is really small up close. The farther you get from the area being illuminated the better. Good for camping, backpacking, and outdoor activities but not great for caving through tight passages or using as a work light for up close illumination as the spotlight beam is to small in tight quarters. Great light for the right jobs but not a perfect all-around headlamp.

Excellent Shades

Kaenon Jetty Sunglasses - Polarized

Kaenon Jetty Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2010

Picked these up in the Almond finish on SAC and am super happy. They are very light, very comfortable, very stylish, and the optics are off the charts. The polarized lenses reduce glare and offer noticeable enhancement to the clarity, detail, and depth of the field of vision (try looking at a distant tree line to test me on this, I was pretty amazed at the difference these things make). I have a large face and it seems to me most sunglasses skew toward the small end of the spectrum these days, so I appreciate the beefy size of the Jettys. Was on the fence about the Almond finish when ordered, but they're cool - not too flashy or gaudy. Have experienced a little bit of fogging when I break a sweat, but not enough of an issue to detract. Love 'em! (have a video review of them on Amazon if you want to get a better look at them)
