Patagonia Nano Puff Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 29, 2011

I love my nano puff, but I use it AFTER exerting myself, like after climbing to peaks or when resting. For breathability, it's like wearing a trashbag. It's not meant for sweating in. I would not buy this for the purpose of biking or running in it. Also, mine has elastic at the bottom and would ride up my back if I were to bike in it. It hasn't rained on me while wearing this, but it's not described anywhere as water proof.

Great for backpacking, breaks

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2010

Love it so far. Super light, packs into a waist pack or even into a camelbak pack for cold breaks. Wore it on a windy, icy peak in Big Bend at 20 degrees with just an underarmour coldgear baselayer and a long sleeve shirt and was plenty warm (except for my hands and ears!). I had an extra layer to put over but didn't need it. Basically, this takes the place of a fleece as a layer (fits over baselayers and under a shell) and is more windproof and lighter weight. I bought it a size smaller than I buy most things (I wear L, bought M) and it works perfectly, but rides up just a bit if I raise my arms straight up (I'm 5'8, 175). Doubles as a pillow!

I've had this pack (or a version of it) since... 1998 ish? I've used it hiking the AT from Maine to Connecticut, all through Big Bend, most of the south central states, on down to Copper Canyon in Mexico. It's the most durable thing I've ever bought. I can't even tell you the stories this pack has survived. It STILL looks great- no plans to buy a new pack any time soon. It's a bit heavy, but doesn't feel like it when it's on your back. I can carry more weight than my buddies and feel like I have less because of the awesome suspension system. If it's too big, just take the removable pack off the top (or go ahead and take that extra Nalgene of wine with you). The pockets aren't built for holding water bottles, and you actually have to take the pack off to get to stuff, but that's like 60 seconds of inconvenience out of the hours that you'll hike in comfort. Get this pack, like me, and don't buy another one for 12 years. You can buy that other stuff you want later.

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

February 26, 2010

Nano vs. softshell:
I need a jacket- I plan on using it backpacking, mostly in the south (TX, NM, CO, etc) as a layer over a fleece and under a light REI rain jacket, if needed for wet/wind. Would this be a better idea than a comparably priced soft shell? Even when pretty cold, I get hot quick when I hike, so I'm mostly talking about for camp and for quick summits.
