Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's
August 16, 2011
In a 4 season tent on Mt. Rainier (Camp Muir, July 2011), getting ready for sleep. This jacket exceeded my expectations given there wasn't as much loft I as I expected. Superbly warm inside the tent and out, without activity either. Temperature probably in the lower 20s at night, little wind. Very pleased

The North Face Diez Down Jacket - Women's
April 17, 2012
I've come to accept using most anything with a DWR (durable water repellent) coating in rain provided 2 things: it's not pouring and the exposure is brief, such as running from the car to the mall entrance etc. Given this is down you'll want to be extra careful though, and even i draw the line with DWR coatings when I know I'll be outside for a while (such as skiing in the pacific northwest where it constantly rains). Lastly, remember to refresh the DWR coatings, doing so really helps!

Mountain Hardwear BMG 105 Backpack - 6400cu in
March 2, 2012
A concern I have with larger packs is the ability to look up while wearing a helmet- does this pack have a little "scooped" out section to help create space when you tip your head back? (or similar solution). For example the Gregory Palisade 80 is shaped slightly to allow this but not quite enough in my opinion. Any help appreciated, thanks!

Brunton Echo Pocket Scope Monocular

I agree with Mike Throgmartin. While it's certainly water resistant, I wouldn't call it water proof after taking it apart- there weren't really any seals. I think the only concern with water would be a drop causing full submersion.

Black Diamond Turbo Ice Screws

What size? I'll probably only be in 4 person teams, on the temperate glaciers of the Pacific northwest. I was going to pick the 19cm just because I assume longer ensures a better "bite" but the 22cm might be overkill. I don't ever plan on doing any vertical climbing. Any advice for a newbie? Thanks!

Petzl Mini Prusik Minding Pulley
May 21, 2011
Sorry, I should've been more specific- When this says "Prusik Minding" I assume this particular pulley somehow works better with Prusiks than other pulleys. Is that the case? I can't figure out why one pulley would work better than other, at least with regards to prusiks. Does that help clarify my question? (thanks for the response!)

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

Rick_Samon gives great advice but I just want it to add- if you just need the warmth and no functionality of the out of the gloves then the inserts work just fine. They come out no problem, easy for just walking from the parking lot to the trail head or similar. Walk around the block with the wife works too.

Brunton Solar Controller Battery Charge Monitor
May 15, 2011
I don't have that specific Solar Controller but my guess is the 105 watt limit is the more important limit. You can always custom hookups regardless of what cables are included. I assume the 3 panel connectivity limit is more based on hardware hook ups, rather than what the circuitry can sustain.
(there's a review on Amazon that says it's been used up to 80 watts without a problem).

it gets cumbersome than charging the batteries directly but an inverter and normal power strip would work, plus you don't have to do all the electricity math. 26watts is great for device batteries. I use it for my phone, camera batteries, and laptop.

Brunton Solaris 26 Solar Panel
May 7, 2011
I posted some responses on the other sized Brunton Solaris but it's the 26 I actually own. I've attached a picture showing what comes with the Solaris. Electricity is a little confusing so do a little research no doubt... but you will have this basic setup: Solar panal - wires - inverter - wires - device to be charged. You can insert a solar controller as mentioned above if you have expensive batteries or are concerned about over charge. Though most my devices have a charge indicator so I can just watch the battery level and detach when it's done. That's more likely the case for car camping uses, vs home uses you'll probably be considering an array of batteries and really want the controller.

Outdoor Research Durable Dry Sack
May 7, 2011
I have a couple of these, mostly 10L sizes but a few other ones too. I feel more than confident using the side loops for any sort of lashing. The stitching would certainly hold the weight of the contents, but it would probably fail if you took a stumble where your bag caught a branch and tore off as you fell (or something similar).

Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Axe
May 7, 2011
I just purchased the 65" length and I'm 6'2" as well. I was stuck between going 65" and 70" but decided why not go with the smaller, lighter, less cumbersome. I don't think I'll miss the 5". You pretty much always keep the thing ahead of you up hill as you ascend and descend... you're not using it to reach downhill certainly, so remember that. The stick idea (above) is helpful.

Oakley M Frame Sweep Replacement Lenses
May 7, 2011
When looking at the frames as if worn on someone else you just put downward pressure on the top, where the side-most extent of the lens is and then in the opposite direction (up) push up on the frame right where the temple connects. The hinging motion almost always pulls the frame away from the lens without a problem for me. Some of the M frames have that hole in the middle of the lens that then clicks into an additional clip. I guess that's additionally security. I don't know whether that's an old feature or a new feature. I have both.

I really want to add- while they're not baggy, they do have the articulated knees, and I was shocked how stretchy they are. If you want the baggy look that's one thing but if it's a matter of comfort then I wouldn't worry about needing baggy. Just get the pants they're really comfortable. I'm a huge fan. It is extremely dependent on a number of things, time of day, weather etc. I can tell you that the 26 watt charges my iPhone at almost a % pt per minute in clear sun when it's late afternoon (note, my iPhone battery isn't new anymore, it drains quick and recharges equally quick). Regardless, the 26watt shocked me with how effective it is.

My 3Gs is really touchy when I plug it into the inverter off a car. The touchscreen goes a little crazy. The AC current probably isnt as pure/conditioned as what comes out of the home wall outlet. It definitely charges though no problem. I experience the exact same when connecting an inverter to the 26watt panel. Charges quick, but the touchscreen is almost unusable.

Brunton Solaris Flexible Personal Solar Panel
May 12, 2010
In my opinion if you're going to charge multiple items then just bring an inverter, so you can plug-in your normal 2 or 3 prong (USA) power cables. The inverter will provide AC current (same as your home wall outlet). In the attached picture you can see the cables that are included with the 26watt panel (awesome by the way): battery terminal connectors, female cigarette connector, and multi-sized connector. If you're only interested in charging an iPhone then go ahead and get a third-party car charger, it'll plug directly into the included female cigarette cable end. This saves the weight and hassle of carrying an inverter. Note, if you only plan on charging small electronics (no bigger than a laptop) you don't need to buy a really high wattage inverter (200w is sufficient with overage). This will keep the size, weight, and cost down. 2000 watt inverters are for running microwave ovens and such, most the packaging will provide a dumbed down chart. Now having said that, if you set up your panel to charge a bunch of 12v car batteries all day, providing you massive nighttime power, maybe you want a more substantial inverter lol. Hope that helped

GSI Outdoors Bugaboo Camper Cookset
April 6, 2010
I love my set. A little heavy for backpacking, but I knew I could always just exclude parts when I wanted to go lightweight. Plus carcamping with friends will be more enjoyable. My wife's more of a car camper than backpacker- she loves this set!
The only complaints I can think of are the measurements inside the bowls (1/2 cup increments) are almost unnoticeable. Makes reading them difficult. The other compaint is probably unavoidable for all camping cooksets due to weight concerns, but the pans are very thin, creating hotspots when cooking. Plus, in my opinion, a stove that has a tiny little flame disperser makes the hotspots more prominent so that's something else to keep in mind if you're getting all gourmet. Metal utensils on any non-stick surface is always ill-advised but not a big deal. Overall it's a great 5 star set.

Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork Trekking Pole
March 22, 2010
I ask this with honest interest- how do $100 trekking poles compare to the $12 pair I just saw at a major department store? I understand the anti-shock features on some poles but I'm not sure I actually want that. I was hoping the difference is durability but even Black Diamond offers only a 1 year warranty for most their poles.
Thanks for the help!

Vaude Tec Rock 32 Backpack - 1950cu in
February 21, 2010
Probably limited to summer travel depending on how much you pack as far as clothes and toiletries. I just responded to a question below, but it might help if i explained in greater detail what i packed. I had a heavy fleece top, a tiny rain shell, a hikerpro water filter, a 3L cambelbak bladder, a 24fl oz thermos, my wife's softshell jacket, about an old-school lunchbox sized amount of food, and about a little ziplock bag's worth of random survival type stuff, plus two apples. lol so hopefully I didn't forget anything and that helps you get a better idea of what 1950cu. in. looks like. I was able to get another lightweight fleece thrown in but there wasn't much more room left, unless you want to start leashing stuff to the outside.

Vaude Tec Rock 32 Backpack - 1950cu in
February 21, 2010
I'm not the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to gear, new to it all, but i can provide my experiences. I recently bought this pack on SteepandCheap. Anxious to try it out, I filled it with a fleece, some food, camelbak bladder, and enough to fill it for a afternoon of cross-country skiing. It proved way more comfortable than expected. It rain/drizzled the entire 4 hours outside and nothing got wet. To me it seams durable enough, but I have no experience really, so can't recognize all the little extras. I see it's currently listed at $70 here on backcountry and would recommend it for that price. Very excited to keep using this pack!
