Salomon Element Vario Ski Pole

Salomon Element Vario Ski Pole

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2012

I'm a big fan. Raise the poles for the up and lower to go down. Simple.

Downsides? No documentation on how to adjust the inner nut and the straps do not lock when adjusted to fit snug. Duct tape holds them however...

Impressed with Durability

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skin

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skin

Rating for this product: 5 January 17, 2012

I've been using my Alpinist skins with a 195 Kuro for two and half seasons or roughly 100 times now. I've been impressed with their grip and the glue's durability, as I have not replaced the glue to date. The bonu? The Tip fitting. Kuro's are wide and flat in the tip and finding tip clip was tough until I found these.

Strongly recommend them! Chapeau!

The Sentintel's charge, no doubt about it!

Salomon Sentinel Ski

Salomon Sentinel Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 17, 2012

The Sentinel is so smooth at speed and breeds confidence with their damp tip, while maintaining fast and sure edge to edge control.

Definitely a winner at Alta on those days between storms. Surprisingly, they smear well when needed in wind-buff and chalky snow.

I ski the 191 and I'm 6'3" 185 lbs.

One Boot Quiver?

Salomon Quest 14 Boot - Men's

Salomon Quest 14 Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 14, 2012

Solid boot capable of driving many different skis. Initially, I was a bit skeptical of a boot with walk mode as I've skied a few in the past and was not satisfied with their alpine performance. The Quest for me is close to a one boot quiver, if not the answer for a guy like me, who tours and slack-country's as much as I ski on resort.

I've skied them for a solid month and have tried many different skis. Getting edge to edge quick is easy with the Quest, so on par with the Ghost, and the 130 Flex index? Who knows? But I do know they transfer power very well and can drive skis up to 130+ underfoot with authority.

The walk mode is great for booting and skinning, and the locking mechanism is solid and intuitive, once you figure it out. Place the 'switch' in the down position, lean forward to engage and when disengaging, I've learned I need to flex forward to relieve the pressure on the walk mode 'switch'. If you don't relieve the pressure, I can see the 'switch' being prone to break from user error.

Great shoe off and on the bike

Mavic Razor Shoe - Men's

Mavic Razor Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 20, 2011

The razor is refreshing in that the performance
off the bike is solid as well. Contrasted with the Sidi Dominate I give up a bit in sole stiffness and power transmission while gaining a functional scrambling shoe which is useful in the Wasatch. Also, they are super plush and have
good heel lock. Stoke on them!

Bomber Jacket

FlyLow Gear Higgins Jacket - Men's

FlyLow Gear Higgins Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 19, 2011

Impressive jacket. Warmer than I thought it would be for a modified soft shell, hood fits over my Maze helmet with lots of room, big vents in the pits for touring breathability and bullet proof. Toured and skied several times in tight trees and surfing tree lines to catch the last pow pillow and so far no scuffs or tears.

Only downside is my XL is not articulated enough in the armpits so when in a tuck or reaching high, the sleeves leave some skin exposed.

Burly- Stiff ski

Black Diamond Zealot Ski

Black Diamond Zealot Ski

Rating for this product: 3 January 19, 2011

Great ski for smooth snow (pow, chalk), super stiff and super stable. The downside is they are too stiff in the tip to be used as everyday ski as it deflects and gives way too much feedback in crud and imperfect snow.

Net Net- Great ski for soft snow, smooth snow and charging Cirques, but way too burly and stiff for my tastes in the tip for anything other than specialy. I had the 192.

Sick Ski

Volkl Kuro Alpine Ski

Volkl Kuro Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 6, 2011

I'm 6'3" and have both the 185 and 195 and have been skiing them for three seasons now. I use the 185 for noodling around Alta because they are quick turning and lower swing weight than the 195's and have Dukes mounted on the 195's for touring and deep resort days. Both ski's are stiff torsionally underfoot and progressively stiffer from underfoot to tail which from my experience with other double rocker skis separate the Kuro from the crowd. On all but the iciest of groomers Kuro's rail and skiing pow they are super surfy and stable. Their weakness is skiing firm moguls. At speed that they are stable but I need to focus on staying forward as inertia wants to rock me in the backseat.Lastly, Kuros and I'm sure other double rocker skis as well, enable me to actually ski zipper with a modicum of proficiency which is a huge benefit skiing south faces in the Wasatch.

Warmest Jacket I've owned

Patagonia Rubicon Rider Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Rubicon Rider Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 28, 2010

The Rubicon is hands down the warmest jacket I've owned in 36 years of skiing. Go to jacket for sure for early starts and super cold days. We've had some warm storms in LCC this winter and the Rubicon begins to get a bit wet around wrists and shoulders which is expected.
I really dig the over-sized hood which fits my helmet great for storm skiing and cold skiing.

Good idea but poor climbing performance

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Split STS Climbing Skin

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Split STS Climbing Skin

Rating for this product: 1 November 25, 2010

I bought these for a pair of 185 Kuro's and learned quickly they work fine for low angle soft snow climbing but when the ramps go up these slide back. On firm boilerplate they were challenging.

Great for breaking trail on long mellow approaches but not so good for going steep in an existing skin track, a track that's been hit with sun or a track that is off-camber.

Work great on Kuro's

G3 Twin Tip Connector Kit

G3 Twin Tip Connector Kit

Rating for this product: 5 November 25, 2010

I had trouble finding a tip connector that were bomber for my Kuro's and ultimately found the holy grail right here with the G3 Tip connector's. They don't peel off when hitting the odd stump, tree or rock and they help set a good line when applying the skin.

Solid Boot

Salomon Ghost Ski Boot - Men's

Salomon Ghost Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2010

So, I've skied these boots 20 times or so and I have been stoked with their performance. Initially, I was skeptical because last season I took a flyer with the Dalbello Krypton and was completely disappointed with performance and durability. The Ghost ski's stiff, comparable to my Lange Comp Pro's, are fast to buckle, comfy and ski as solidly as any Race boot I've owned. Contrasted with stiff boots I have owned over the years, I would have to say the Ghost's are easier to put on and take off which is a big bonus on super frosty days. Salomon nailed it.
