MSR Evo Snowshoe

January 7, 2011

Jer,
According to ORSsnowshoesdirect, only the binding on the Evo Ascent is garaunteed to accept a ski boot. They recommend hiking or snow boots for the Evo and Evo Tour. This isn't to say you couldn't MAKE it fit, but I don't have the experience to say for sure.

Tubbs Mountaineer Series Snowshoe - Men's

January 7, 2011

Aaron,

From my experience, you will probably want to go with the 30's unless you are carrying a pack or dealing with really deep and soft snow. My friend an I both own 30's, I'm 172 and he's pushing 210. He sinks noticeably deeper on his in fresh snow, but I don't think he would be comfortable walking on 36's unless he really needed the float. Again, packs and deep snow. If you are a tall guy, maybe I would lean toward the 36s. I wish I could help out a little more, I know it sucks being on the borderline. It happens to me all the time in clothing sizes.

I hope this helps a little!

Osprey Packs Atmos 35 Backpack - 1900-2300cu in

December 14, 2010

Adam,
From the FAQ section of www.OSPREYPACKS.com:
"Which of your packs are carry-on compatible?
In our Travel series, the Meridian 22, Vector 22, and Porter 46 all meet maximum legal carry-on requirements.
Among our daypacks, most of the bags below 40 liters will meet carry-on requirements. Follow the 22” x 14” x 9” or 45 linear inch total for standard carry-on dimensions, or call your airline for specific guidelines."

Of course you could always catch a TSA agent on a bad day or they just might be stopping everyone with a sexy looking backpack that day... My point is that the stays *Shouldn't* be an issue, but you never know these days.

I checked the TSA website for rules on carryon LUGGAGE and this is all I found:
"TSA will screen any "Carry-on" baggage that will fit through the x-ray machine; however, it is up to each individual air carrier as to whether the baggage fits the size restrictions for your flight."
"Transportation Security Officers have discretion to prohibit a passenger from carrying an item through the security checkpoint and onboard an aircraft if they believe the item poses a security threat."

Good luck!

Atlas BC24 Snowshoe

December 14, 2010

Barb,
Any snowshoe should allow you to do this if the powder is deep enough. The issue I find is when the crampons snag on brush/rocks/etc as you sled down, but leaning into the rear of the shoe as you descend will keep the toe crampon up higher where it won't snag. Unless he specifically wants a shorter more packable shoe such as this, I might recommend looking into a 30" shoe (such as the Atlas 11 or 12 series, or Tubb's Mountaineers) as the length will also assist in his "skiing."
I hope this helps a little with your decision!

How is the fit on this thing? Stoic pictures never really do the product justice, and this image makes this "sweater" look more like a jacket. Does it fit nice and tight for layering? Peak Performance Heli Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 24, 2010

Kyung,
I would suggest taking your sleeve and chest measurements and comparing them to the sizing chart (link is right next to the options pull down menu). I would guess that you will be a medium because these sizes are pretty small. At 5'9" 170# I'm usually a medium (occasionally a small) but according to these measurements I should be wearing a large.

Wilderness Systems Pamlico 135T Tandem Kayak

November 23, 2010

Sue,
When comparing this to the listing on Wilderness System's page, the only difference I am seeing is the updated Phase3 seating. But that could just be chalked up to old stock photos. The best thing you could do would be to click the "Chat Now" link in the upper right hand corner and talk to a live service rep during regular business hours. They can have one of the stockman in the warehouse check the year of manufacture on the boat's statement of origin to confirm when it was made. This will give the exact date the boat was made, though I'm not sure when exactly they started making the boats with new seating according to their website the new boats were available for sale as of October 15, 2010.
I hope this helps.

Atlas Elektra 12 Series Snowshoe - Women's

November 23, 2010

Corkie,
You land on a grey area. If you plan on frequently carrying a pack or dealing with deep powder, then I would say go with the 27" shoe. Otherwise, based on your size and weight, I think you will do well with 23". You fall right in the middle of the weight range for the 23 and you don't want to be tripping over them. That being said, the width difference between the two sizes is only 1/4", so if you're still on the fence, my vote is to always go for more flotation. But that is because I rarely hike packed trails.
I hope this helps a little.

Good shoe

Louis Garneau Freeshape FX Pulse II Snowshoe

Louis Garneau Freeshape FX Pulse II Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2010

Scooped this shoe up with a 50% of coupon code for a friend, for $90 this is a lot of snowshoe. The asymmetrical design looks like it will be beneficial, but I really never stepped on my other snowshoes. The frame and decking are lightweight and solid, colors are even kinda cool. The traction is moderate and will suffice for light backcountry exploring. The binding is the source of my greatest compliment and a small amount of chagrin. First, let me say this binding cinches quickly and tightly onto your boot and releases almost as quickly. (The 2011 model changed to some stupid ratchet design that looks like it is straight off of some 1990's rollerblades.) My only complaint is that there is no stop to the hinged binding. I like getting a little crazy on my snowshoes and I like to know that they will remain under my feet if I am jumping an significant distance, these do not have that reassurance. However, the light bend to the tail end SHOULD help put the shoe back under your foot during landing. We should have our first snowfall soon, when it happens I will be sure to borrow these back from my buddy and give them a good trial run. If I note any differences to what I stated above, I will report back.
If you score these on SAC or with a discount code, you cannot go wrong! Very comparable to Tubb's wilderness series.

Julia,
I'm afraid I don't have outdoor experience with this binding (I've played with it in stores) so I can't really argue for or against it, but I might suggest looking at the Mountaineer series shoe. It is 30 bucks more, but I think it's the best damn binding available on the market. Simple and snug; no buckles to potentially fail. The $30 also gets you a bushel full of extra traction. I am curious though; if someone else would like to weigh in on their experience with THIS shoe I would love to hear it.

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe - Women's

November 18, 2010

Dally,
As a fellow Northwoods hiker, I can tell you there is no such thing as overkill. This shoe is the only shoe that I would consider to be more aggressive than my Tubb's Couloir (replaced this year by simply the mountaineer). Aggressive traction means a word of difference if you plan on leaving the trails behind. I like going out into the woods, finding the steepest hill around, then marching straight up it. If climbing over fallen trees and down rocky escarpments sounds like fun to you, then get this shoe! If this sounds like perhaps it's more work than fun, and you would rather stick to the trails that those damned (*wink* I'm kidding!) CC skiers keep all packed down, then perhaps you could go with something a little lighter on bite.
I hope this helps!

Edit : Heel raisers are a nice option, but I haven't found a hill tall enough to warrant their use in Wisco yet. Maybe if you make it to the porkies in upper Michigan it might come in handy. But then again, I think overkill can be fun :D

Osprey Packs Stratos 36 Backpack - 2075-2319cu in

November 14, 2010

Frank,
Yes, the different sizes are for different torso lengths as measured from your C7 vertebrae (the nubby one at the base of your neck) down to to top of your hip bone. Here is a link that better explains it and gives a sizing chart:

Atlas 10 Series Snowshoe

November 14, 2010

Bruce,
Tubbs and Atlas are both owned by K2 sports and manufacture their product in china (which really makes me hate myself for loving my Tubbs' snowshoes). I *think* MSR, Crescent Moon, and Redfeather are still made stateside.
I hope this helps.

Perception Carolina 12.0 Kayak

November 12, 2010

Logan,
I own this boat's cousin, the Wilderness System's Tsunami 12.0 which has the ability to hold everything I would normally keep in my 70L pack (Osprey Aether 70) in the cargo holds with a little room to spare. This still leaves the deck rigging and the area between your legs as options for additional cargo. Of course this all depends on clever packing, but I assure you it can be done as I have done it myself.
I hope this helps!

Definitely not "loose fit." I suppose if you must compare them to a pair of Levi's I would have to use the term "boot cut."

Norrøna Narvik Powershield Pro Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 11, 2010

Uncle Thor,
I had a nice answer all typed up with lots of suggestions and realized this coat is made with powershield *PRO*. Much fewer options for that. Polartec lists them here:
http://www.polartec.com/#/shelter/polartec-power-shield-pro/
Of the 3 choices the TNF option is the only one that will fit your burly chest.
I hope this helps a little.

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe - Women's

November 11, 2010

Lyn,
This version is "engineered" for women. Basically (other than coming in different colors) there are 2 differences. The main one being that the womens shoe is 3/4" skinnier for a more narrow gait. The second difference is that it is 4oz lighter, they claim this is an engineered feature but it's more likely due to the less materials required in decking and framework to make the shoe skinnier. (Note, the men's shoe spec shoes 10 more pounds of flotation on the high end; again due to the width)
I hope this helps! You can better compare the numbers here:

Osprey Packs Aether 60 Backpack - 3500-3900cu in

November 10, 2010

Brad,
Very similar packs, one of the first things I have to point out is the compression straps. The Aether has straight jacket style compression straps which are great for securing large items such as snowshoes, a jacket, or a sleeping pad. The atmos features cordura fabric as you noted and the aether has a lid that converts to a lumbar pack. Besides that, the only real remaining differences I know of are the 5 liters in size and the $12 in price difference. They even come in very similar colors.
I own the old model Aether70 and love it, also the old stratos24, so I have become used to jamming things under the straight jacket straps. That's just a personal preference of mine though and you'll have to make your own choice.. I hope this helped a little bit!

Osprey Packs Atmos 35 Backpack - 1900-2300cu in

November 10, 2010

Coolhand (Luke?),
This becomes a subtly tricky question to answer because of the sizes you chose to compare, and the simple answer is "about $11." The stratos series of packs is basically Osprey's smaller day pack series with a front load design. The atmos is one of their larger pack series with a top load design. The exceptions to both of these statements is however right here where the two series overlap, the stratos 36 and the atmos 35 where they reverse their designs. The stratos 36 now becomes your top loading option (with front panel access) and the atmos 35 becomes the front loader (more or less).

They both have the airspeed suspension system and similar compression straps. The stratos has one ice axe attachment point, whereas the atmos has two. But the stratos has an integrated rain cover that the atmos does not. They both feature trekking pole storage on the harness. Some color options change between models and the atmos' constructions includes cordura.

As you can see, between the two models you have chosen, they are quite similar with just a few little differences. You have to make your own choice from here. But since I love throwing in my own $.02, I like the atmos 35 a little better; it is built more like my older model stratos24 with the large stretch pocket and the panel style opening is great for accessing and stowing climbing gear quickly (if that's your thing.)

I hope this helps a little!

Thule Universal Flat Top 4 w/Locks

November 9, 2010

Simon,
No, this does not come with crossbars or the rack system. It does have universal clamps that will fit most existing racks, however your civic will likely need the base system. I suggest you check out www.thule.com or www.yakima.com or click the "car rack configurator" link above to get started on building a system.
I hope this helps, and good luck!

Janie,
They should with their universal fit. However, Since 1993 they have made 4 different body styles of Grand Cherokee. If you can specify the model year I or someone else can confirm whether or not they will fit your factory rack. Otherwise these will fit any Thule or Yakima aftermarket rack system.

Osprey Packs Aether 70 Backpack- 4000-4600cu in

November 8, 2010

Xtina,
A woman of that build could certainly carry this pack, probably in the small torso size, but I would recommend you first look at the Osprey Ariel series of packs. They are the female counterpart to the men's Aether packs. Ariel has some subtle differences in the harness and hip belt to accommodate female anatomy and comes in 55, 65, and 75 liter sizes which can be found here on Backcountry at the following links and are currently 20% off as well:

MontBell Ultralight Down Inner Pant - Men's

November 8, 2010

Drew,
I believe you are right. The manufacturer lists 6.8 oz for the medium size, a guy on backpackinglight.com states his XL weighs 8 oz, and if you click the link below to view the 2007 version, it is listed at 7.4 oz. I believe the 13.3oz is a mistake, but I have no idea where they got the number from. It might be wise to click the live chat link and point this out to a customer service rep and also make certain that the pants do indeed weight the 7 oz I suspect they do.

Arc'teryx Kappa SV Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 7, 2010

Lindsay,
From Arc'teryx's website:

"We strongly recommend washing your insulated jacket in a FRONT LOADING washing machine. Select the gentle cycle with a two-rinse setting and a wash temperature of 30C / 86F.
Tumble dry your garment inside out on a warm/medium (60C / 140F) temperature setting for approximately 30-40 minutes or until dry.
To remove stubborn stains, first, spot clean the stained area with Granger's Performance Wash allowing the stained area to soak for 10-15 min, or use a stain eraser on the contaminated area. Then wash and dry the garment as per the instructions given above.

We recommend using a Spray-On, or a Wash-In reproofing product, such as Grangers XT Proofer Spray, or Granger’s Performance Waterproofer. Visit grangers.co.uk for more information.
First, wash your garment using Grangers Performance Wash. Then, use your chosen reproofing product and either spray directly on to the outer face-fabric of the garment while it is still wet, or simply wash the garment in a second wash-cycle according to the suggestions above, adding the appropriate amount of Wash-In waterproofing product to the wash-cycle. Be careful to follow the washing instructions on the waterproofing product label.
Tumble dry your garment inside out on a warm/medium (60C / 140F) temperature setting for approximately 30-40 minutes or until dry."
