Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 4 April 19, 2012

I'm a bike commuter and use this bag everyday. The medium size carries my laptop and pretty much whatever I need for school. It is waterproof, durable, useful, and quite sexy. I love it.

That said, I have a few issues with it:
-why no carrying handle? most messenger bags seem to have them; it doesn't take much to add a lot of utility

-the way the shoulder strap attaches to the bag should be improved. my strap has inadvertently detached from my bag on several occasions. It really sucks when you're quickly walking across a busy street and the shoulder strap comes out of the slide. Swiveling snap hooks, clipped to D-rings attached to the pack make a lot more sense to me. Additionally, they would prevent the strap from getting twisted which happens to me often enough to be a little frustrating

In short: great pack, just rework the strap and add a carrying handle

Mountain Hardwear G50 Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear G50 Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 11, 2011

So far, so good. Protects well against the wind/rain/cold of autumn in the Chugach and the fabric seems burly enough to withstand some abuse.

It would be cool if it had an arm pocket and some velcro cuffs.

Somehow I thought it would be a little warmer but it's a great shell and I've worn it about everyday since I bought it.

Petzl Elios Climbing Helmet - 2011

Petzl Elios Climbing Helmet - 2011

Rating for this product: 4 May 5, 2010

I have dreadlocks on top of an already oversized head which makes finding a helmet that fits problematic. After some searching, I have found that the Elios best suits my needs (mostly ice climbing and ropes course work).
It's light, comfortable and has worked well for me on long hot days in the sunshine.
I took off one star because the adjustment dial broke off after my helmet fell from a shelf onto the floor. I suspect it is not a durability issue so much as my bad luck. I still use it, but any of my smaller-headed friends can no longer adjust it to fit them.

Black Diamond Mega Light 4-Person Shelter

Black Diamond Mega Light 4-Person Shelter

Rating for this product: 5 April 22, 2010

A shelter that can comfortably sleep three big guys and a week's worth of backpacking gear, yet squishes down to about the size of a water bottle is hard to beat for going lightweight.

It is not without its drawbacks, however. As some reviewers noted it can get a little clammy inside; also, the lack of floor could become problematic during heavy rains but a cheap ground tarp and a thick sleeping pad are enough piece of mind for me.

It's a little pricey for a glorified tarp (especially if you were to buy the floor or bug net) but if you're concerned about saving room in your pack for important things like snacks and you've got a backpacking buddy to split the cost, it's way worth it.

Patagonia Borderless Trek Pant - Men's

Patagonia Borderless Trek Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2010

Haven't used them backpacking yet but I can tell already that they're pretty good pants. They are very breathable and lightweight, yet seem very tough. The large fits my 6'1 200lb frame perfectly and the stretch is a very nice touch.
The only thing I would add is some leg zips.
Great Patagonia quality for a hard-to-beat price
