Best Kiteboarding 2011 Waist Harness

Best Kiteboarding 2011 Waist Harness

Rating for this product: 4 January 14, 2011

I've been using this harness strictly for snowkiting, so I can't really comment on the naked comfort. I've only tried a couple other waist harnesses, ('07-'08 Mystic Warrior and Liquid Force Luxury) but this one seems to be slightly heavier due to a bit more padding. The 3D molding definitely cinches right into the curve of my lower back, which keeps the harness down on my waist much better and seems to support my back better than the LF. It is segmented with a large flat panel in the back that keeps it from spinning, which is good and bad - I used to like to let the harness twist when riding toeside. The spreader bar pad is super soft and a little thin, not stiff nylon like Dakine's, but I've never had a problem even without using the tie-down strap. Overall a very soft and comfortable harness that is stiff in the right places. The straps were impossible to tighten/loosen the first couple times, but have since broken in nicely. I'd prefer something with less luxury/weight, but I have to admit the extra weight is minimal and this thing has taken a beating for me on the ice this year.

The 36t came on a used bike that I got, under a bash guard, and I've ridden it pretty hard for a year now. Mostly on tough hilly single track lately, where it's too big and I'm always cross-chaining and powering a big AM bike way too hard up hills to be healthy for components, and it's in remarkably good condition. The profiling on the teeth is still clean. It's fairly thick, I'm not sure what it weighs, but like they say - other components are going first. I wish they had a 32t on sale for the tight winding stuff I live by now.

Shred Ready Shaggy Helmet

Shred Ready Shaggy Helmet

I won the urban camo version at our local kayak paddlefest this past spring, before that I was rocking a pro-tec wake helmet. This thing is super adjustable like they say, even with my gloves on, and the head strap flips over so I can rock the visor on the way down river and then flip it around when we stop to play. It's also great for fitting a hat or liner underneath. We've had low water most of the year, so the bomb-proof shell has definitely been confidence inspiring as I bounce my cartwheel-failing head along the river bottom, the brim keeps the rocks just out of reach of your beak. It's not really lighter than the pro-tec, but the suspension system makes it feel like it. The only knock I can find is the tendency to dump a bucket of water down your back every time you roll... i still wear the foam-lined pro-tec when we park and play in icy may.
