Salomon XT Wings 2 Trail Running Shoe - Women's

I think this would be a great shoe for you. Personally, the XT Wings 2 is my favorite shoe ever. It is alot like the Kayano in that it has the dual-density pronation control. It would be great for 10+ miles because of the excellent cushion as well as the AC Skeleton which is a rigid stability plate that runs throughout the shoe. Keeps the shoe feeling good mile after mile. Salomons sometimes run a bit small. Either a 7.5 or an 8 would work for you depending on how you like your shoes to fit. Hope this helps your decision!

Salomon S-Lab 4 XT Wings Trail Running Shoe - Men's

May 13, 2012

Hi Drew, I think the Speedcross CS will be a better shoe for snow/wet conditions, but if you prefer the XT Wings over the Speedcross (which i do), then go with the soft ground version of this ( http://www.backcountry.com/salomon-s-lab-4-xt-wings-soft-ground-shoe-mens ). It has deeper lugs.

Salomon SpeedCross 3 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

May 13, 2012

These are perfect for snow/mud conditions, with really deep and aggressive outsole lugs, and decent water shedding abilities with the mud guard and such. However, if you're looking for your feet to be completely dry, go with the Climashield version of this shoe. Climashield is not like Goretex. CS is highly water resistant but still highly breathable. I haven't actually run in a CS shoe so I cannot attest to its breathability in sandy desert or anything, but it is supposed to be better than Goretex for breathability.

I've found that Salomons run a tad small. I wear either 10's or 10.5's in all shoes, but a 10.5 in Salomons works best for me. For you, I'd say the 9.5 would be a good choice.
I think this is a short to medium distance model because they don't have any sort of pronation control or stability plate such as in XT or XA models. They have excellent cushion and forward momentum, though, so I dont think they would be a problem on longer runs.

Salomon Wings Sky GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

March 1, 2012

In my experience, Salomon Contagrip soles are just as durable as Vibram. I also think they have better grip on slippery surfaces (such as wet rocks), but am not sure for snow.
If this Wings boot has the same soles as my XT Wings running shoe, the lugs are not very big for snow traction. But if you don't want a "Winter boot" then you won't find much bigger lugs on any other summer GTX boots anyways. Keen does a good job of putting big lugs on their summer and especially winter boots. Hope this helps!

New Balance MT110 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

February 10, 2012

As more minimalist shoes, like the PureGrit's, they should fit snugly in length. They have wider forefoot widths to let the toes naturally splay out, but your toes should aaaaalmost be touching the end of the shoe. If you're looking to buy these, I would size them accordingly compared to your Brooks. If you think your Brooks are too floppy, go down a half size.
As for your ankles, the minimal cushion and stability in these kind of shoes overworks the muscles in your ankles and calves, and it is normal to be super sore after a run, compared to your Nikes.

Amazing sound. Not for sports

Skullcandy FMJ Ear Buds w/Mic

Skullcandy FMJ Ear Buds w/Mic

Rating for this product: 4 December 12, 2011

I love listening to music on these -- they have tons of bass and crisp treble for tiny in-ear buds. It really puts the bass right there in your head. The bad part is that the cord is very sensitive to touch, so anything rubbing against it sounds like hearbeats in your head. Because of this, theyre terrible for running or biking. The buds also do not stay in my ear very well, especially when running. So if you want a solid, great sounding bud for lounging around the house, these are it! Not for sports.

Saucony ProGrid Guide 4 Running Shoe - Men's

Saucony ProGrid Guide 4 Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 15, 2011

I owned the ProGrid Guide 3's and they served me well for 750+ miles and 4 years. They are rated as 80% road, 20% trail, and thats probably how I used them. They held up well for everything and provided great stability. I upgraded to the Omni 9 for more stability, but looking back, I liked my Guide 3's better.
Right now they seem to be available everywhere on sale, so I'd pick one up if you're looking for a long-lasting, stable shoe!

Not quite for me

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 15, 2011

These are my first pair of barefoot shoes. I appreciate how Merrell made a great looking (cough VFF cough), high performance option for the barefoot market, but I have high arches and moderate pronation, and the lack of support in these (and any barefoot shoes) just doesnt seem to work for me.
However, I loved them on long climbs and they made my calves sore for days. The highly adjustable lacing helped snug them up around my arch. On the downhills, though, they were killer on my ankles and arches and you can feel every rock. Still, I use them as supplemental training shoes for the benefits they provide.

My favorite shoes, but...

Salomon XT Wings 2 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 15, 2011

I have the XT Wings (not 2) that I got off SAC for a screamin deal. Definitely my favorite pair of shoes that I own. Theyve got countless trail miles, some road, and tons of everyday and gym use. They can truly do anything.
They've been supportive, light, and nimble, but I hate to retire them for something as silly as breaking the lowest outside eyelit. I like them so much that I'm giving them 5 stars even though they ate through a pair of laces and broke an eyelit after a year and a half. It looks like the left shoe is about to do the same too. I decided to upgrade to the XR Crossmax Guidance because of the pronation control and reinforced eyelits, but I still use these shoes daily.

Wanted to like them...

Salomon XR Crossmax Guidance Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XR Crossmax Guidance Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 15, 2011

I have medium arches and bad pronation so I figured these shoes would definitely do the trick.
From what I can tell so far, they are super solid shoes. My gait in them was strong (maybe because of the OS Tendon), and they were very supportive. My left arch started to bother me, but hopefully that will iron itself out as I break them in.
I gave them 4 stars because they seem a bit clunky, and I think I liked my XT Wings a bit better.
Cool shoes though. Salomon 4 life.

EDIT: After 4 months with these shoes now, I honestly don't like them at all. I still love my XT Wings and will buy another pair. The arch in these, like for the reviewer above, is just too much. It really hurts, and the shoe feels very clunky.

Awesome for precise or overhanging problems

Five Ten Team 5.10 Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Team 5.10 Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 April 3, 2011

Pretty much like the title says. This shoe is up there with the best aggressive bouldering shoes on the market right now. The toe sticks to anything on the wall. I'm a huge fan of heel hooks, and this shoe definitely likes them too. Never any slippage within the shoe.
I wear a 10.5 street shoe and bought these as a 10.5 also, and they are TIGHT. Probably so tight because I have wide feet. After 4 months with them, they still hurt to wear for 30 minutes straight. At first, I could only wear them for about 10 minutes at a time. But, before they start to hurt, they feel absolutely great and sooo precise. Durability is good for now, but I can already definitely see some wear on the toe tips.
Being my first pair of super aggressive shoes, the Team's have definitely improved my fluidity on the wall since I practically dont even have to worry about footholds now.

Good looking, right price, decent goggs

Smith Fuse Goggle

Rating for this product: 4 January 10, 2011

The goggles look great and theres a style for anyone. At 50% off the price is super hard to beat too. They fit nicely and usually have no problems, and are overall a solid goggle. I personally would give them 5 stars, but from my friends' experiences with them, have to rate them lower.
Now the cons... My friend and I have these goggles and on very cold days we both get fog inbetween the lens which is super hard to get out. They also fog up if your neck is all bundled up and you breath upward. Also, i bought a pair for my girlfriend and her first day with them, she took a spill and they snapped at the strap connector rendering them useless. Thankfully Backcountry has their amazing return policy.
Something else to consider... Replacement lenses cost $40 (practically the price of the whole goggle), and Smith does not carry Fuse replacement lenses. If you order from SmithOptics, you have to use the newer Stance goggle replacement lense, which fits the Fuse.

So awesome, very few flaws

Stoic Welder Lo Softshell - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2011

First off, Stoic shells just looks the most badass of anything out there. But it doesnt stop there; this softshell feels amazing and performs great too. Fortunately enough, I fit the stoic sizing. I'm 6' 155 and went with the medium. The fit is perfect, and allows for a base and mid layer underneath. Just enough for the jacket's intended purposes IMO.
Flaws - The drawstrings are super stretchy and dont seem to 'draw' very much. The wrists are very tight, which can be a plus for warmth or minus when layering. The hood is very large, which fits over my ski helmet but is a bit annoying for casual and hiking purposes.
Overall my rating is probably a 4.75/5. Beastly jacket.

You cant beat this thing's portability and weight... I forget its on my head all the time. Also, the multitude of light modes is a definite plus. I also love the pivot, you can just adjust it to wherever you need to look instantly.
Using it as a primary light, though, has its downfalls... for me it just isnt bright enough. Also, the little mechanism that locks the light into off mode (just a little plastic bump) broke off after about a month. Not a big deal, but it can get flicked on in a pack or something.

I've owned these shoes for more than a year now, and I climb in them at least once a week, usually 2-3 times.
