Whiskey Militia Whiskey Militia Hired Gun Hat - Men's

Whiskey Militia Whiskey Militia Hired Gun Hat - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 14, 2010

I thought all the reviews were exaggerating it a bit... no way could a hat be this good. I got an analog 210 not too long ago- how could this be that different, especially for only a few bucks from DOG/whiskey? Long story short, this hat is SWEET. Mine arrived with a slight curve and it fits my big dome like it was made for me. The analog took a while to break in and the bill is still kinda tight against my forehead, but this one is comfy as hell RIGHT NOW. The material is plush and the wool content makes it insulating and breathable. This thing has great attention to detail and subtle styling. The second it touched my head, I took it off and ripped off the tag and stickers: no way this is going back now.

perfect blend...

Arbor Bug Bamboo Longboard

Arbor Bug Bamboo Longboard

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2010

... of long and short board. I'd been out of the skate scene for a few years and I missed it a lot. Originally I was going to build another flipstick but I decided I wanted something that was easier to push around on. This thing is the perfect in-between. It eats up cracks and gravel WAY better than the hard little tricky wheels. I had no problem taking this home at night- crunched over all sorts of stuff in the dark and didn't lock up once. Plenty fast too: only a few pushes will take you over a block thanks to the greaseball ABEC 5 bearings (not ABEC 3 as described). I've only done a few little hills but the Bug feels plenty stable at higher speeds than I'm used to. It's only 3 or 4 inches longer than a regular board (though with a longer wheelbase), which makes this thing easy to maneuver around at low speeds too. My favorite thing about the small size is that I can still do that skate-style launch: where you begin running while holding the nose, throw it down, jump on, and speed off all in one move... unlike a true longboard where you have to set it down on the ground, point it in the correct direction, and gingerly push off. This thing also snaps up curbs NO PROBLEM, due to its stiff (not gumby) construction. No stepping off and picking up your board for tiny obstacles like the longboarders. I even managed to jump down a three-stair, fifty a few curbs and do some lazy kickflips. You can definitely feel the added weight in the trucks which limit your altitude, but this thing is still plenty fun for little shenanigans.

If you're looking for something that can cruise around town with scalpel-sharp low and medium speed maneuverability, yet still stash easy and pop up curbs like your tricker, this is it. Definitely cool styling on the koa board, everyone wants to ride it as soon as I step off. Pick one up and start pushing... and fall in love with rolling all over again.

Good, not great.

686 Plexus Axis Softshell Jacket - Men's

686 Plexus Axis Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 29, 2010

Eh, this shell is all right. Decent pockets, warm micro-fleece lining. I wish it had more features for the money, like seam-taping or a zip-out powder skirt. It does seem to change color when you walk outside... in bright sunlight it changes from mocha to an olive/puke green hue. I also didn't like how small the waist hem is... it hooks under my butt and limits movement if I crouch or sit down. So a decent shell for mellow days but not a lot of upgrades for when it's time to layer up and hunker down. And unless you're a super skinny dude you might want to size up. I switched it for an Analog Wire jacket, now THAT is a sick shell.

Finally, a shell that delivers!

Analog Wire Jacket - Men's

Analog Wire Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 27, 2010

I've been looking for a good jacket for a while, and I finally feel at home in this one. It's like those Xterra commercials: everything you need, and nothing you don't. It's a super light weight shell that breathes well, cuts wind, and sheds water no problem. I love the look and feel of the charcoal-colored ballistic nylon. The pit zips are HUGE and are easy to open and close, something that was lacking in my 686 shell. The monstrous front zipper is super easy to operate and never snags, and it has a generous flap behind it to stop water from sneaking through. Seam-taping is done well all throughout the jacket, including the hood and sleeves, which some companies "forget". Lining is a combination of soft polyester solid and mesh fabric, which makes it super easy to throw on. Plenty of room to move around and layer under without being too bulky either. Velcro wrist-cuffs are half spandex which makes them snug but not uncomfortable or limiting, I like them better than gaiters. Except for the two zippered fleece-lined hand pockets, the rest of the pockets are double velcro... the only one that requires a little effort to open is the sleeve pocket. Besides the windowed pass pocket under the skirt, this jacket only has one giant interior pocket on the left. I almost missed it because the velcro'd opening is right on the edge of the main zipper, very sneaky. It includes a smaller pocket inside shaped like your iPod. So since there's no window here, the only way you can tweak your music is if you do it by feel or take the entire thing out. Zip-out pow skirt and low bulk make this an easy jacket to wear around town on cold or rainy days. The hood has a nice adjuster that tightens around the crown of your head, not the face. It also has a little bill, which I like except for when it occasionally pokes your neck if you lean back in a chair. Sure the X-ray images are a little obnoxious but most people seem to like em. Little yellow accents all over set this jacket off.

Bottom line: I like this jacket WAY better than my 686 plexus shell and the cappel newcastle, both of which are going back. This jacket just has way more comfort, utility, and versatility (looks at home on or off the mountain) without getting too bulky or feature heavy. Thanks to Analog for making a sick shell and to Brociety for hooking up an awesome deal!

Rides like a cadillac, both good and bad

Cappel Newcastle Insulated Jacket - Mens

Cappel Newcastle Insulated Jacket - Mens

Rating for this product: 3 April 27, 2010

All right, I ordered this jacket off Bro because I figured it was a good price for a feature rich jacket. And now that I have it, well... I think it's a little TOO rich. First the good: The gray denim shell is sick, feels like good cotton denim (because it is) but the laminate makes it super waterproof. The 3M thinsulate is definitely WARM without adding a ton of bulk. The soft liner has gold-foil accents that peek out a bit at the collar and hood, but you have to be careful they don't make you look like you're trying too hard. The hood is super plush and adjustable. Don't know why it's removable because the high collar makes you look like count dracula without it. Lots of interior pockets, but nothing to write home about. The bad: this jacket is COVERED with metal snap buttons, which look cool but are a pain to use, each requires two hands so you don't yank your jacket around when you open a pocket or undo the zipper flap. The pockets are all zippered anyway, so the buttons are strictly fashion. But if you don't fasten them, you sound like the ice cream man clinking down the street. The wrists are snap button closure too, which is pretty awful in terms of adjustability. Plus the buttons make you look kind of snooty, like you really meant to buy a new england pea coat or something. There are two vents on each side, one under your tricep and one on the side of your ribcage... cool but kinda tricky to open and close smoothly.

Overall: good construction, WARM jacket with GREAT shell material and comfy liner with fleece accents. But some of the functionality was lost to fashion, the worst of which are the wrist adjusters. Plus I can't help but feel like there's TOO MUCH going on with this jacket, it's weighed down with features I'll probably never use. Finally, the jacket tries to look subtle with the material but ends up being a little flashy due to the 8 million brass buttons and shiny liner. So if you're going to wear this around town, you gotta be able to pull it off with ballin style, something I probably can't do.

slick pair of pants!

DC Donon Pant - Men's

DC Donon Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 23, 2010

Managed to scoop these from an end-of-season sale at the local DC outlet, for 87% off! Twenty-two bucks! That has nothing to do with the function, just figured I'd brag a little. Ok first off these pants have an 8K waterproof with a 5K breathability rating, not the other way around. Pretty much nothing in the way of insulation, they have a mesh boxer-area liner that thickens it up but nothing down in the legs. So you gotta layer up on cold days. The ankle gaiters work well, they have some rubber hem lining and a lace hook to give a little more anchor to your boots. The side cargo pockets have drawstrings so you can hike up the bottoms just in case you're walking around the parking lot in socks or regular shoes and you don't want to scuff em up. The waist gaiter is a bit weird because it looks like you can pick different buttons to snap into for variable tightness, but... the top row has two settings, but the bottom button can only snap in one place. Lastly, the suspenders are pretty useless because they don't adjust. You can cross them ( like an X ) to take in a bit more slack but unless you're a sasquatch you're not gonna be tall enough for them to do much good. I think I'll sow on some more velcro to tighten them a bit. They velcro off if you don't like em.

Total fit and finish is good, attention to detail checks out ( no missing stitches or fraying etc, you can feel quality). Not a perfect pair of pants, but if you can get them on sale go for it!

686 Plexus Axis Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 2, 2010

How does this jacket fit, baggy or otherwise? I was looking at the 686 vitals cubic shell and both reviews said it fit kinda awkward. I normally get a medium in jackets/hoodies, I'm 5'9, 180, with a 39 inch chest. I'm not looking for the ultra baggy look.
