686 New Balance V74 Skate Shoe - Men's

January 24, 2012

Says right in the description the shoe has 200g insulation. This is a healthy amount of insulation, but the description makes no mention of waterproofing.

So- your call.

Nice Jacket

686 Renegade Wind Jacket - Men's

686 Renegade Wind Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2011

Like the style, the fit, and the features, but there are a few things that I think need to be corrected in the product description.

First up, no pit or chest zips. Pits are vented, but it is the permanent type, not zipable if things get nippy. Additionally there is a mesh internal chest pocket that opens to the outside, but I am not sure that counts as a chest vent . . . . hmm.

Next up, hood is non-removable. It stows pretty well in the collar, but it doesn't unzip.

Lastly, the lining looks like they used some remnants from other cuts of fabric. I like the look personally, but if they used something a bit more garish it could be a problem for some people.

All told I like the jacket quite a bit, I can already tell it is going to get more street wear than I originally thought, but that is ok with me.

Helmet Convert

Smith Maze Skullcandy Twin-Tip Audio Helmet

Smith Maze Skullcandy Twin-Tip Audio Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2011

I will be honest, I never felt I needed a helmet. Not because I am "too good", just the opposite. I suck. No way I was capable of anything on a snowboard that could result in a head injury. Well, after a pretty gnarly mountain biking accident this summer, I got short term amnesia, even though I was wearing a helmet... So yeah after that my opinion shifted and I decided that getting a winter brain bucket was the right thing to do.

I shop around a bit, and decide that the Maze, Matte Black, twin tip audio is the one for me. Light weight, simple un-flashy design, and tunes. Yay. The helmet feels a little odd on my head, but I have an oddly large skull so maybe it is just me. It is EXTREMELY light, my girlfriend has a Variant Brim from Smith and my Maze is probably half the weight. Not too shabby. The audio setup (more on that later) was easy to install and provides pretty nice sound.

What is keeping it from a 5 star review however is ventilation. It is FAR better than I expected looking at it, and I guess it really is my fault for choosing the sleeker look, but I really wish there was more circulation under there. I found myself taking it off in the lift line to let my head cool. Probably not a problem if you don't run warm like me, or if you aren't out in eastern PA's rapidly warming February.

The Twin Tip Audio did have shortcomings as well. The split for the wires isn't quite as long as I would hope, so I would have to keep both the cell and mp3 in the same pocket, and they just don't fit. Additionally, there aren't any instructions to tell you this, but it appears that the answer/pause button only works on one of the tips, and only for Apple products. Not a huge bummer, but I was hoping it would work with my Droid. Oh well.

All and all I am happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this to a friend, but be aware of those few short comings because I could see them being a major issue for some users.

Smith Maze Skullcandy Twin-Tip Audio Helmet

February 16, 2011

Yep. Twin tip means two tips.

Just don't plug in the other. Since this isn't a powered audio source you won't get any feedback from the free plug.

RedRam LS Merino Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

RedRam LS Merino Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2011

Not sure what the difference between my shirt and the below reviewer's, but mine has been through the wash a few times now (at a laundromat no less!) and its still the same size!

Anyway, this thing is super comfy. A little thinner than a lot of similar stuff on the market (I own a similar Smartwool) and this thing isn't nearly as warm BUT regulates temperature better once you get moving. As with anything else, compromises.

Other than that, awesome wool super powers (warm when wet, wicks like there is no tomorrow, and odor fighting) make this my favorite base layer.

Vans Chukka Low Winter Shoe - Men's

Vans Chukka Low Winter Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 2, 2011

Shoes are very much as described. DWR keeps me nice and dry stomping through slush, and the inverted waffle tread is very grippy, even if things get icy. Only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the build quality. Vans, I love you guys, but how are you going to pretend that there is $60 of shoe in here? I picked these up for $23 on Whiskey and still think you might be charging a bit more than you should. Either you are using cheap materials or the sole is made with Bataleon, because there is definately a triple base technology shape.

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2010

Great shirt. Packs well for travel (gets real small and doesn't get mega-wrinkled), and the plaid pattern makes it easier when you need to squeeze an extra day out of it (hides the stains!) Also it breathes well in the summer, great hot weather shirt.

Good Specs, Despite the Kitch

Anarchy Scathe Sunglasses

Anarchy Scathe Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 3 July 30, 2010

Bought these on WM because I needed new a new windscreen for mountain biking. They fit very snuggly (plus), have a low-medium tint (just enough shade in open meadows, not too much deep in the woods), and great coverage (no more twig-in-eye scenarios).

The only negative I have is style. Luckily they aren't the nasty olive-tortoise shell look the pictures show, unfortunately they just sort of come off as diarrhea brown. Furthermore the whole "Anarchy" as a brand thing is just weak, and the "ripped up" sides only exacerbate the situation.

That said-if you are buying for utility these are great shades, 5 out of 5 especially if you pick them up on the cheap. If you are looking for style though . . . I mean I guess if thats your thing, cool, go be yourself, win awards.

Louis Garneau Vancouver Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Louis Garneau Vancouver Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 20, 2010

This was my first "traditional" cycling jersey, and all in all I find it to be quite good. Pros are that it is a looser fit, but without looking super bagged. The material feels like it will last quite well, and it definitely wicks and dries VERY well. Only possible down side is the zipper gets stuck, both at the top of the jersey and in my chest hair. OUCH!

2nd Pair . . . Not the Same Shorts?

Fox Ranger Bike Short - Men's

Fox Ranger Bike Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 July 12, 2010

Ok so I liked by first pair of Rangers so much I picked up a second pair when they came around on CL. Woo right? My first pair was all-black so I decided to wild out and get the brown hounds tooth this time. Baller.

When I got these shorts though, I noticed something odd. The new pair (brown) had the integrated liner spoken of previously. So I have a black pair with a full-coverage removable liner and a brown pair with an integrated liner. So the browns aren't as good as the blacks, but they are more than adequate I suppose.

Other than that they are everything I love about the first pair. Comfy chamois, good fit (though the integrated liner makes the shorts ride a little lower), and durable construction.

Solid Short

Fox Ranger Bike Short - Men's

Fox Ranger Bike Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 21, 2010

This is my first cycling-specific short, before this it was all commando in basketball shorts, and my boys are so glad for the upgrade. As other reviewers have stated, no thigh vents. What they have omitted to tell you (and Backcountry has omitted to say) is that the chamois is 100% removable. Little snap on loops hold it in place during shipping/laundry, but the thing definitely comes out.

Word to the wise- chamois/liner are see through . . . be careful out there kids.

All in all, shorts seem to be good quality, reasonable degree of baggy, and were a steal. Worth it!

Good stuff, for the price

Serfas CK-1 Combo Kit One

Serfas CK-1 Combo Kit One

Rating for this product: 4 May 21, 2010

Picked this up on Chainlove, mainly for the pump. Upon receiving and looking at the rest of the tools, I definitely see some value here. The multi-tool is pretty decent, and the tire levers/patch kit seem solid enough. Neither of them are truly impressive (I mean they aren't Park or Craftsman) but the way I see it they were cheap enough that if I loose/break them, who cares? Definitely taking me from a pump only rider to carrying a few tools.

The pump is pretty good too. Presta and Schrader compatable, light weight, and seems solid enough that I don't think I'll blow it out my first trip out. Pump alone would have been worth the Chainlove price, but the other tools make this a steal.

As for the saddle bag . . . yeah, I'll never use that. Seems nice enough, but it's still a saddle bag.

Fox Low Rider Sock

Fox Low Rider Sock

Rating for this product: 4 May 6, 2010

Scored these on Chainlove. Never really considered cycling specific socks before, but these were definitely worth it. Dries super fast, fits comfy, and keep your feet hella cool. Only drawbacks are minor- the socks are so thin that if your shoes aren't well ventilated then they will get saturated pretty quickly.

DAKINE Chop Shop Bike Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 6, 2010

Good shirt. Side mesh gives you lots of ventilation without looking like a member of "Right Said Fred", good wicking properties as well. Fit seems a LITTLE big, probably could have stepped down to medium as I don't wear armor, but better too big then to look like a roadie.

686 Mannual Grid Insulated Jacket - Men's

April 8, 2010

Jacket is surprisingly warm. Alone it is warm enough for most weather, but the cut is generous enough that you can layer when it gets really cold.

As far as dry- it isn't GoreTex good, but as long as the hill isn't all slush, you shouldn't have a problem.

Burton Moto Snowboard Boot - Men's - 09/10

Burton Moto Snowboard Boot - Men's - 09/10

Rating for this product: 4 February 11, 2010

This boot surprised me. Was expecting the lacing system to be a hassle (why do snowboard companies think we can't just tie our shoes?) but it is actually really really good. Was expecting "cheap" boots to be uncomfortable, but these are probably among the most comfortable shoes I own.

On a personal note, I was expecting to hate the all white look (when you buy on sale you make some compromises) but the Stormtrooper look is rockin.

Picked these up on Brociety (Denim with Bronze/Persimmon) and they are awesome. Any fogging I get on the lift disappears as soon as I start riding. The persimmon lens is a great all around, have used it on bluebird days as well as for night riding, worked well in the sun, great at night.

Sizing Note

Burton Custom Snowboard Binding

Burton Custom Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 4 September 15, 2009

It is mid September, so this is less of a review and more of a important thing to note. The provided sizing chart, and a review below both recommend the that the medium bindings can fit boots up to size 11. I wear 10.5 Burton Motos, and there is no way they fit. Wicked toe overhang, and the capstrap won't ratchet properly.

That said when I exchange for large, these seem like solid bindings.
