Vasque Wasatch GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Vasque Wasatch GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2010

These boots have endured nearly all forms of abuse I can put them through: snow, clay, gravel, water, mud etc.

They did take a while to break in, though, which for some is an issue. Here is a link to a review that encapsulates it well.

Here's a more thorough review on the problem with the lens' inner anti-fog:

In general, it won't hold if touched when wet. Other than that, the peripheral vision on the gogs is what makes this such a versatile tool.

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 22, 2010

It was really difficult to rate this jacket. The jacket from the perspective of one who only looks at gear as utility first and looks second, this jacket is a phenomenal 5 star asset for any high country endeavor. It kept me toasty on some single digit days in Denver and warm and dry in a snowcave.

However, when I first pulled it from the bag I thought someone had sent me a used jacket. Small and large black spots speckled the material. It looked like mold or dirt had been embedded into the fabric. I called backcountry and they overnighted another one to me. The new one looked the same. After really close examination I realized that the down beneath the tangerine material is a mix of white and black feathers. The black shows through prominently, appearing like grease smudges. Its worse when you wear it. Sending it back and getting another jacket altogether.

That being said, fabulous design, light, compact and altogether worth the money. Nonetheless, I will be wearing this as a normal winter jacket as well as out hiking so I am looking for something that doesn't make me look like a slob.

Mountain Hardwear Lamina -30 Sleeping Bag: -30 Degree Thermic CF

January 15, 2010

I do a lot of snowshoeing and winter camping in the Colorado Rockies. Why wouldn't a synthetic bag rated at -30 not be sufficient in negative temps? I used the Lamina last week in a snowcave and 4 season tent (both times in a bivy) and woke up freezing. The temps got down to -12 but I thought in a -15 bag I would have been ok. Is down the way to go? I was told down was the worst option for winter camping because it could get wet from snow and fail to retain warmth, I just want guidance on the best option for winter warmth in snowcave/tent as well as cut back on space/weight.

eS Accel TT Javier Skate Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2009

Traditional Accel. The green in not loud but subtle and stylie. This model seems to have a bit more bulk to them providing a lot more support in the arches and ankles with out being overly heavy and taking away the sensitivity to the board. Plus, I am Basque and was stoked to see the Ikurrina (Basque Flag) inside the shoe. By far the most durable and versatile shoe I've used.

Perfect Fit, Ultra Comfortable

Analog Arto Denim Pant - Men's

Analog Arto Denim Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 28, 2009

Just got back from skating in my new Saari's and am so impressed. It is hard to find a pant these days that fits well to the legs and doesn't make you look like a hipster or pseudo rocker and be loose enough with out being in the way. They flex and stretch (yea spandex?) with movement and are not so denim that they chafe or rip hair out. I normally wear a 32 but got a 33/32 to be safe knowing they were a tighter fit and am very happy.

Most Reliable Goggle

Smith Fuse Goggle

Smith Fuse Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 September 26, 2009

After 13 years of riding resorts and hiking backcountry I have used goggles from Spy, Dragon and Oakley. I stayed away from Smith (not sure why) until last year when another Oakley lens was ruined due to trying to wipe snow out after a fall. The worst thing on the hill is fog an lack of peripheral vision. A buddy of mine who gets flow from Smith lent me a pair of these to use for a day and on the way home I bought a pair. I used them for about 18 days before the season was over. They are so solid. They fit nice and close to your head (not like bulky Oakley and Spy) they never fog and you can clean the inside without ruining the fog protection unlike spy and oakley. The Dragons are the most similar but for the price of the Fuse, this will out live the others and give you some extra cash for a beer after the day is over.
