Osprey Packs Aether 60 Backpack - 3500-3900cu in

August 26, 2009

As per your three questions:

- There is a ski loop on each side of the pack to allow for side carry configuration (one ski on each side).
- The frame is light as a feather and very durable, but to my knowledge, it is not designed to be removed. However, anything is possible if you're willing to do some surgery.
- The pack is water resistant, but not waterproof. If you anticipate weather to happen while using this pack, an Osprey UL Raincover would be a wise investment.

Hope this helps!

Lowe Alpine TFX Summit 65+15 Pack - 4000cu in

August 24, 2009

Only in the sense that you might encounter some mixed/ice climbing while mountaineering. For simply single-day ice climbing (for example, an ice fall) this is such a large pack, it would pull you right off the wall. Instead of a 65L pack, you might want to look in the 25-40L range. Osprey Packs is releasing the Mutant 38 pack this fall in the U.S. (not available yet on backcountry.com, try moosejaw.com) that I plan to pick up for ice climbing. Osprey's Variant 28 & 37 packs are also good options, but I am a die-hard Osprey Packs fan and, thus, bias. Ummm, some other solid contenders include The North Face's Spire 32 or Prophet 35, Black Diamond's Sphynx, and Mammut's Ice 45. Hope this helps and best of luck out there!

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

August 23, 2009

Yeah, if you're looking to keep cost/weight down, I prefer the Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest pad over the Z-Lite. Although the Z-Lite supposedly has more thickness, the construction of the Ridge Rest is far more durable. Honestly, though, if it were up to me, I would opt of the Therm-a-Rest ToughSkin self-inflating pad. Although you'll have to shell out more coin and deal with more weight, the added comfort you would get from sleeping on the ToughSkin would make it completely worth it, ESPECIALLY with you being a side sleeper. That, and the ToughSkin is designed to handle rough surfaces like concrete. Hope this helps!

Although backcountry.com does not offer these new packs at this time, you can find them for sale elsewhere online. In the meantime, check out the different models at Osprey's website:

Adventure Medical S.O.L. Thermal Bivvy Sack

August 16, 2009

Adventure Medical's website states that this bag is in fact 'Waterproof, Windproof, and Warm,' but I wouldn't count on staying dry in a downpour. The difference between this and the AM Heatsheets Emergency Bivvy is that this version is supposedly more durable (with the aforementioned qualities), and 30% stronger than the other model. Aside from being half the price, however, the other model is half the weight and reflects more body heat, making it warmer. I have the Heatsheets Emergency Bivvy and can say that it stands up to some abuse. In my opinion, go for the Heatsheets version--this one just isn't worth the loftier price tag.

Snow Peak Trek 1400 Titanium Cookset

Snow Peak Trek 1400 Titanium Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 August 16, 2009

Listen, if you're looking to backpack in comfort and do some 'gourmet' cooking, pick yourself up a good aluminum cookset. Aluminum isn't too much heavier than titanium, doesn't develop hot spots as much, and is more efficient at heat transfer. Just make sure you get your aluminum coated, or you'll end up with some nasty residual flavors. GSI Pinnacle series is an example of a rockstar backcountry kitchen setup.

No, titanium is for those of us who scrutinize every ounce of gear. Titanium pots are PERFECT for ultralight enthusiasts who really only need to boil water for drinking or for freeze-dried deliciousness. And when it comes to titanium cookware, I vote that Snow Peak is the tops: light, well-made, and durable. I use the Trek 1400 set for trips involving 1-3 hikers, and the Trek 900 set for solo jaunts. Even better, the 900 fits well inside of the 1400 and there is still room for a canister, stove, and more (backcountry.com even sells these two cooksets together in a combo). And even though I use it mainly for boiling water, if you decide to use your pot as a serving dish, you can easily wash off titanium to a taste-free clean.

Right now, the TNF Catalyst 60 pack is on sale for $195 (50% off, regularly: $388.95). The sale price puts it below the cost of this pack, and the more comfortable Catalyst 60 would be darn near perfect for a 3-day hike--or if packed right, a week-long jaunt. Don't get me wrong, the Prophet is an excellent rucksack, but the Catalyst and Primero lines are more suited for extended stays on hiking trails.

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2009

You will almost always find a use for this little fella when on the trail, and as everyone says, it particularly shines in digging out freeze-dried food pouches. Although it is featherweight, the titanium keeps it durable and free from residual flavors after washing. Something worth noting: although the pictures might make the handle appear to be tubular, it actually has a concave back (hollowed inward) to reduce weight and make it structurally stronger than a flat handle.

Osprey Packs Argon 85 Backpack - 5100-5500cu in

August 14, 2009

The Argon pack is Osprey's premier backpacking pack, and what it adds in a little bit of weight (compared to the lighter Aether series), it makes up for with a whole lotta comfort and a few extra access points. The 85 L packs, if packed right, can carry enough gear for a few weeks. If you want a larger capacity and have the stamina of a mule, take a look at the Argon 110. If you plan on restocking at waypoints every week or so, the Argon 70 would be a better option. Really, it depends on how you're going to hike the AT. Personally, I'd go with the Argon 85 as a happy medium. Whatever you decide on, make sure you find an Osprey dealer and get a custom-molded hipbelt. Osprey makes a durable and comfortable pack and you won't regret purchasing one, no matter what you choose. From one who lives near the AT, enjoy!

Osprey Packs Argon 85 Backpack - 5100-5500cu in

July 24, 2009

I debated this same question not too long ago. You covered the key considerations in weight and access points, but consider it this way: the Argon series is designed to be the premier backpacking line for Osprey, sporting a slightly better suspension than the Aether models. If comfort is more of an issue than cutting precious ounces, then the suspension on the Argon--combined with a custom-molded hipbelt--can protect you from those extra couple of pounds. Personally, if I were buying a bag to spend most my time on defined trails and steady elevations, I'd get the Argon. If I needed a sack for mountain-laden adventures, I'd lean towards the Aether.

Concerning what size to get: take a look at the 'View Sizing Chart' information under the product options pull-down menu and base it primarily off of your hip measurements (just above your hip bones, not along a plumber's waistline). If you're somewhere in-between sizes, opt for the larger one since us fellas rarely lose horizontal measurements as the years go by.

Rating for this product: 5 July 16, 2009

Great-looking tee that both represents the Nepalese spiritual aspect of mountaineering and supports a great cause that is part of the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation. If only I got a tax write-off for this shirt....

[This shirt does run big: I ordered a large and it looks like an xl, BUT when you wash it the first time, wash it on warm (with like colors, of course), then over-dry it by running the dyer for about 20 minutes longer than necessary. This shrinks the shirt down to about the right size, but when you wear it, the fabric will stretch in all of the 'high stress' spots, making it feel custom-fit.]

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 July 10, 2009

Sometimes the day ends on a, well....ugly note. That's why it's always good to double-up. You won't feel anything, but in this case, that's a good thing and, hey, you'll sleep worry free!

On a less ambiguous note, although light, this pad is too bulky for the little support it provides. If you need a moderately bulky, all-purpose backpacking pad, I'd go with the Trail Lite or the cushy Trail Pro. If you plan on sleeping on snow and every ounce counts, double-up this pad with a Prolite Plus and you'll be golden.

The North Face Backpacking Bivy 3-Season-Do Not Use

The North Face Backpacking Bivy 3-Season-Do Not Use

Rating for this product: 4 July 10, 2009

Structurally solid, and plenty of room. I am 6'2" and can lay in the bivy when staked out without touching any sides (barely). I would use this bivy year-round, but am hesitant to take it on summer treks due to lack of ventilation--it can get a bit toasty. Also, the entrance is conveniently larger than most bivys I have encountered, but with that size and how much the zipper curves, it does occasionally snag when opening from the outside. I haven't had the chance to thoroughly test this shelter and especially look forward to putting it through alpine conditions on summit bids. Will report back later.

Still the go-to

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

Not the lightest, but can you put a weight limit on your most important survival necessity? Mountaineers, steer clear of aluminum bottles since they are delicate and not supposed to freeze. Also, these wide mouth versions are the least likeliest to freeze shut on you, and I have seen bottles that 'chubbed up' from freezing too many times and are still unbreakable.

If you are simply jumping on the 'Go Green' bandwagon and need an everyday bottle, pick up a 27oz steel Klean Kanteen--Backcountry.com has a cool logo one. But if you're mean and green, well, this is the Hulk of water bottles.

Preliminary Evaluation

The North Face Pyxis Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Climashield Neo

The North Face Pyxis Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Climashield Neo

Rating for this product: 4 July 10, 2009

Just got the Fall 2009 version of this bag that has yet to become available and, living in the South, I can't really test this bag's temp rating during the summer (hence the 4-star rating....for now. However, I climbed into it in my [albeit dry] basement and by the time I got it zipped up fully, my whole body was sweating.). Adequate draft collar and the mummy shape hugs in close. The ripstop shell seems durable enough, and the full-zip zipper runs snagless. Where this bag really shines is the Climashield Neo insulation. I work at an outdoors/camping store, and never have I seen a synthetic insulation pack down so small, yet fluff up so quickly. No problems at all cramming it into the stuff sack, though you'll want to store this baby in the handy storage sack--that's about three times the size of the stuff sack--when not in the bush.

I bought this bag to abuse on overnight peakbagging trips where things can get cold and/or wet in a hurry, but this really seems like this would be a rockstar all-season, all-purpose bag--maybe three-season if you sleep cold. I'll edit this review after some field tests.
