Good shelter, light and versatile

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter 2-Person

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter 2-Person

Rating for this product: 5 July 23, 2010

Used this shelter in conjunction with the nest over the summer. I managed to find 101 different ways to set it up. The shelter is adjustable to accommodate the outside temps. You can tighten it down to the ground, or raise your poles up and keep the tent several inches off the ground. By setting the pole tip end into the ground at an angle, you can give yourself more room to get out. With the shelter's provided stakes, you can setup the nest and the shelter. This can be done by threading of the shelters' lines through the nests' back and side lines. (the nest is shorter length, so use remaining stakes on the front of the nest) The setup has worked great, and created a space outside of the nest and under the shelter for gear.

Light enough for short solo trips!

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Nest 2-Person

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Nest 2-Person

Rating for this product: 5 July 23, 2010

Took this nest and the rainfly shelter camping several times going solo and accompanied, through mud, rain, sand, rocks and most importantly mosquito terrain. It has held up great, but took some getting used to the setup under the shelter to really get it right, and maximize the inside area.
I never dared to use it without the rain shelter. I have a feeling that having both poles inside can become a hassle. When the shelter is over the nest, the door side pole can be stuck tip-end in the ground at an angle to make it easier to get in and out of the tent. There is no way to do that if the pole is inside. In the aft, there is a nylon reinforced patch for the pole tip, but there is not one at the door. If you used your poles upside down without rubber walking tips, then it may wear on the corner, and heaven forbid if it slips out of the corner, it'll likely punch through the nest. I'd buy it again, but I think i'd rather have the GOLITE poles, and maybe then I could carry my bag onto an airplane!

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Nest

July 23, 2010

there is a floor that you can buy, but you don't really need it. Ive used the nest with the rainfly and it was worked great, rain or shine. It tends to absorb moisture after a while, but nothing that will make it wet on the inside.
The floor might be nice if you were in a place without mosquitoes and didnt want your sleeping pad in the dirt. But I'd bet money on my itchless skin, that I woldn't ever skip the nest.

The Coolest

Atlas 9 Series Snowshoe

Atlas 9 Series Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 February 5, 2010

Recently got a pair, and must say they are fantastic. They are not the best ever for blazing trail on a powder day. But going with the 30In version when you fall into both weight classes, should keep you on top better than the smaller size.Straps are super easy to tighten even with gloves on, but are more difficult to take off. Stick well on most surfaces (except super steep and hard packed) A little honing session should take care of that problem.

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex/Primaloft Long Gloves

February 5, 2010

I'd go with a pair of liners, that should be sufficient.

Anyway, you need gloves when its 50? try using gravity to get blood to your hands by hucking off cliffs. or doing hand plants...

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex/Primaloft Long Gloves

February 5, 2010

the Hestras have a single piece of leather on the palm, so you dont have to worry about Norronas rubber grippies to peel off and leave you hanging,(or not hanging on i guess)
The sizing of these is nearly dead on, if your fingers are thicker, then you might want to do some 12oz curls with them on until they pack down. I had a pair of these, and I'd go Hestra. the full leather palm, larger gauntlet and nicer (and elastic) "idiot strap" to keep them on your person. (I am an idiot and lost the norronas because i never put the strap on my wrist)

Great!

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex/Primaloft Long Gloves

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex/Primaloft Long Gloves

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2010

Bought last years model of these gloves, and I loved them. The articulated fit is great, it makes it easier to hold poles. I found that there was quite a bit of insulation, to the point that i really wanted them to pack out, because they were kinda tight on my skinny fingers. The palms had grippy logos on them, that immediately peeled off the leather, oh well but at least theres leather under the rubber. I liked the velcro on the palm side of the glove...it gives the back a clean look, didn't care much for the gauntlets though. Even though I would have passed on the gauntlets, I wish i hadn't lost them a month after I got them. But for most applications, pulling a long jacket sleeve over the gloves works better for me anyway.

Pretty Good

Mammut Pulse Barryvox Avalanche Beacon

Mammut Pulse Barryvox Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2010

This beacon is definitely good enough to find someone(s). It can be kind of shady if you are looking in one direction, the arrow may point straight ahead when the burial is straight behind you, Just takes a moment until the distance increases to realize your mistake. It is nearly impossible to switch from off to transmit to search with gloves on. (Look at Peips for easy big hand use)

Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter

If you are looking for the best beacon out there. You've found it. The full display is easy to understand, I think even easier than the BCA Tracker model. The flagging feature is awesome if you are in a multiple burial situation.

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

Rating for this product: 5 February 5, 2010

For the price, this beacon is the best out there! Very very easy to use, even on your first time. A little larger than others, but unless you plan to spend a lot more, go with this one.

My only gripe, the lack of a full display like the Pieps. I don't really like the arrows as separate lights

Black Diamond Deploy 7 Shovel

Black Diamond Deploy 7 Shovel

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2010

This shovel does deserve a design award. It is super compact and easy and quick to extend for use. The blade is a good size, but here in arises the problem of a short handle. The short handle means that there is less leverage over a larger surface area, so good luck trying to move all the snow the blade wants to move.

Ortovox Orange Avalanche Shovel

Ortovox Orange Avalanche Shovel

Rating for this product: 1 February 5, 2010

I used this shovel for a Avy safety course, luckily I did not purchase this shovel. The plastic will not dig through a debris field. it just won't work. If you are cheap enough to still want to buy this, go to home depot and get a $15 general purpose shovel.
