Petzl Grigri Belay Device

January 20, 2011

Been looking for lots of material to read, thanks for the recommendation. And our aim was to start around Great Falls, VA, where a lot of more experienced guys than us climb.. and have them show us the ropes so to speak... Good point on the ATC too, will look into it. Thanks

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

January 20, 2011

Looking to get into actual climbing this spring, and yes I am a total beginner as far as equipment and technique goes... I want to start putting together my kit (and also suggestions for the kit of my soon to be climbing buddy) and was wondering if this is a worthy first piece to add to the repertoire from day one.

Safe to say my experience level is 0.. I mean scramble sometimes while hiking, but that's nothing.

My buddy is less experienced than me (outdoors wise) but totally excited to get involved.

So self locking piqued my interest considering we are noobs.. We will be top-roping likely, if this info helps. Thanks!

Great purpose built cap for severe conditions

Mountain Hardwear Nakaya Dome Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Nakaya Dome Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 December 21, 2010

This thing fits like a swimming cap, and despite its lack of bulk keeps my head very warm. I like it that it's not so bulky, and I don't get the urge to take it off every 15 minutes and rub my itching forehead. I got it in black, I love the high speed tactical look it has. If I was still in the military I'd probably wear this under my helmet. Along with a neck gaiter you are "covered".. pun intended.

Comfortable for big head

Mountain Hardwear Micro Dome Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Micro Dome Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 December 21, 2010

This is a good overall piece of headwear. Very comfortable for waiting in the commuter line or the ski lift. If you have a huge head like me, it still has decent coverage over the ears (unlike most arcteryx caps that seem to run a bit small for me, and I like arcteryx gear otherwise). If you want full coverage windproof coverage over the ears I would recommend the MH Nakaya Dome. I think the Micro Dome is the most comfortable and reasonably suited to most conditions though.

case study

Contour Contour HD Waterproof Camcorder Case

Contour Contour HD Waterproof Camcorder Case

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2010

Does exactly what it is supposed to do. Used it while jetskiing over the summer, and as a little handheld camera while at the beach with friends. The case adds a little bulk & weight so it makes it cumbersome for goggle mounting. Still trying to figure out a good stable solution for that because my main intention was to use it head mounted for watersports and paintball. Unless you do a lot of faceplanting, you don't really need to bother using the waterproof case for skiing/snowboarding... My friend and I used his camera for snowboarding last season without this case and had no issues at all.

Oh, and maybe I'm just dumb, but at first I thought the case wasn't compatible because I thought the magnet on the switch would mechanically move the switch on the camera as well.

So when you put the camera in the case, be sure its not on record. When ready to record slide the orange switch, and though the switch on the camera doesn't move, don't worry, it has been triggered within the camera to begin recording.

MSR Evo Snowshoe

December 9, 2010

Wow, thanks for the very thorough explanation. I ended up going with the Evo Ascent. Bummer on the colors though, I see the Tours again are another color set as well.. Seems each model has its exclusive colors. I suppose this is to help make inventory sorting easy on the business end?

MSR Evo Snowshoe

What is the difference between these and the Evo ascent? I thought it was the heel lift, but I see this has the Televator heel lift listed in the description as well... If this is basically the same, should I get these instead? They are cheaper, and I like the Olive drab color better, but I want to be sure I'm getting performance that is on par as well. Thanks!

Osprey Packs Argon 70 Backpack - 4300-4700cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 29, 2010

Got it for $279 at moosejaw, haven't used it yet unfortunately, BUT just a word of advice. If you're considering the Kelp Green, thoroughly google search pics of the pack or find a brick and mortar place that has this one available to see in person, because the color in this picture may be misleading. It's still nice, but a little different that's all.

Sporty water shoe meets sandal

Teva Omnium Water Shoe - Men's

Teva Omnium Water Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 28, 2010

I'm not really a sandal guy, but these felt comfortable even wearing at school. Another reviewer mentioned how these are really true to size, and I agree: 12 is a little big on me, might've been better to go with 11.5 but they feel fine besides being a bit wide for my feet (theres gap between the sides of the front of my foot and the sandal). Hope this doesn't affect my comfort much while hiking, though I have a dedicated pair of hiking boots, and mostly plan to use the Omnium for river crossing, boating, and kayaking (when I get to that point!)

Gerber Armor Tanto Knife

Gerber Armor Tanto Knife

Rating for this product: 4 April 28, 2010

Likely to tweak this review with more use, but so far so good. Serrated edge cuts well. The action is kind of stiff, but maybe because I haven't used it much yet. I love the all flat black look. Feels light to me (compared to Kabars I guess lol), and clips nicely and low profile. Can't wait to find a use for it in the wilderness, hopefully not in dire circumstances though!

Contour ContourHD 1080p Wearable Camcorder

Contour ContourHD 1080p Wearable Camcorder

Rating for this product: 5 April 28, 2010

I have a friend who is the test pilot for items I'm interested in. I say "this looks cool" he normally has bought it by the following week. So goes the Vholdr.. at my suggestion he bought it to capture some of our snowboarding. Our snowboarding is not that great, but the footage is still awesome because of the camera I'd say. I was very surprised that picture quality was so great with that little camera and little memory card.

I advise upgrading to a higher capacity card than the included 2GB, and you can also buy an adapter that lets you put in the MicroSD card into a normal card slot.

Sound is okay, but coming down the slopes it is like jet noise.. either we are too fast, or this is just to be expected when quick wind meets microphones?

So I bought mine now, so we can film two angles and give us crazy editing options. Using this for snowboarding, paintball, and whatever action comes up (hmmm...)

The North Face Crestone 75 Backpack - 4300-4450cu in

April 28, 2010

Thanks Phil, I am now proud owner of the Argon 70. It was close, I almost bought the Crestone on the spot since I was able to try that one right in the store (they had other Osprey packs to test, but not the Argon). Got the Argon cheap online at Moosejaw. I'd say the front panel access kind of tipped it in Osprey's favor.

The North Face Crestone 75 Backpack - 4300-4450cu in

April 16, 2010

Okay, I'm trying to decide between this pack or the Osprey Argon 70 (narrowed down to two earthy colors I like). I like the styling and price of the Crestone. I like the features and color of the Osprey.

My question in particular is about the three loops down the back of the Crestone. What to people typically attach or daisy chain here, and is it really useful? It's one little feature I like on the Crestone 75, but just wanted to know if it's really even necessary.

How is The North Face when it comes to comfort of the frames and hip belts?

And overall, which pack (of the two) would you say is best?

Mammut Explorer GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Mammut Explorer GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 12, 2010

These were great just for winter wear, and I plan to use them more for hiking this spring. Water proof and look good just wearing with jeans on the town good.

UPDATE: 6/1/10.. went on a 7-8 mile hike in Shenandoah the other day.. By the last mile my legs were toast.. but not a single bit of discomfort or soreness from my feet during or after the hike.. I didn't realize they would work THAT well.

Also the waterproof aspect works like a charm too, I had to try it.. wedging my feet between rocks underwater to get sure footing since the tops were all slippery.. of course this is less than ankle deep water, as nothing would keep the water out of the top

Red Trace Helmet - 09/10

Red Trace Helmet - 09/10

Rating for this product: 5 March 10, 2010

Picked this up from evogear.. sizing was perfect. It doesn't appear huge to me despite the fact I wear a 7 3/4 size hat (XL Helmet). Was comfortable wearing this all day for my last ride of the season. It worked well with my Oakley OTG goggles, and was a good platform to mount my friend's Vholdr camera while filming him. Gave me a little more confidence to pick up speed on the double black, and to experiment a bit more in the terrain park.

Not bad for my first set

K2 Indy Snowboard Binding

K2 Indy Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 4 January 20, 2010

Worked how they should. Just two issues:

Fresh out of the box a couple of the K2 logos near the toe strap were already peeling slightly.

Sometimes you have to mess with the latch a bit to undo the straps.. it's not always one fluid motion.

I do love how plastic part of the straps are notched almost to the very end so you dont have to feed in too much before you can start cranking it tight. All the rentals I've used (at Winter Wisp in Maryland) have somewhat frustrating straps.. especially around the ankle.. you are trying to tighten, and you just can't quite get it to the point where it will grab the plastic strap.. well the K2's are notched at "that point" Good stuff

Burton Hail Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2010

Finally used these over the weekend. I figured snug boots that aren't broken in yet would have my feet sore at the end of the day. Not so. Got in about 7-8 hours of boarding Sunday and they were nice and comfortable the whole time. No issues. As far as control and flex goes, they were great as well.

Great board

Arbor Del Rey Snowboard

Arbor Del Rey Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2010

I don't really know how to rate boards, as this is my first one, and I'm no expert, but I do own it, so I will review it. I can talk about the width though. I wear a size 12 boot, and I had no issues with toe drag. Other things to consider: my leading foot is angled about 15 degrees, the backfoot virtually straight, maybe 5 degrees tops.. and I'm on K2 bindings. I do remember last month on a rental board, I had slight issues with toe drag.. nothing extreme, but noticeable. I noticed no toe drag at all here. So you don't have to worry too much if you think you have big feet..

Okay I may be wrong, but my understanding is freestyle boards tend to be wider in general.. but the numbers don't lie.. I don't recall off hand, but in the research I did before buying, this board is not much skinnier than a Burton WIDE board I was also considering... I'm glad I went with this one because I love the design. Doublecheck the stats and research before buying, but for me, I decided (and ended up being correct) that slightly skinnier by like a centimeter or two versus a wide board is not a factor.

Hope this helps some of the larger footed riders who are in love with boards not offered in wide lol

DISPOSABLE TRAINING WHEEL BASICALLY

DAKINE Clutch Stomp Pad

DAKINE Clutch Stomp Pad

Rating for this product: 1 January 20, 2010

I guess there's something to be said when most reviews are bad, but unfortunately there was only one bad review when I ordered mine..

I followed the instructions but this thing fell off on the first day out. At least it stayed on and worked like a charm for as long as I needed it.. Then it sheds itself once it feels like you have transcended needing its assistance (tinge of smiling sarcasm). By the end of the day I was able to exit lifts controllably without the stomp pad. So it's like a $10 disposable training wheel, that you don't have to worry about peeling off yourself.. IT DOES IT FOR YOU! Awesome! I guess I'm lucky, some of the reviews say the glue backing is still stuck, but mine also started peeling off itself (I noticed a few rides later and finished it off). Should give it two stars for that convenience, but to be honest if it was supposed to be made to last, then this product SUCKS..don't think I'll need another stomp pad anyway, but Backcountry I'd gladly accept a free one for my troubles :)

FMJ w/ Inline mic

Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket Bud Headphones

Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket Bud Headphones

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2009

I have the Black ones, with metallic cable, and the inline mic/toggle, and use it with my iPhone.

Bought these at an airport when my normal earbuds totally flaked out two months ago. GREAT BASS sound. Nice style.. These stay in my ear better than the type that sit in the groove on your ear (maybe it's just me, I don't see anyone else have issues, but if I move around much the other type never stay in).

Once again it may be just be, but I am able to turn these up louder on the bus to work without requests from people to turn my music down.. That equals a more enjoyable music experience for me, AND the people around me. With my old earbuds outside noise would get through to me, and my "irritating" hi-hats would get through to 50 somethings on the commuter bus, and despite turning them way up I couldn't hear as much, and bass? Forget about it.

I see some are not happy about the quality... well I've only had them two months so far, so I can't say too much.. hope they stay in good shape.

I stuff them in a small pocket on top of my backpack, and they don't get tangled too bad either..

Why not 5 stars? I can't stand the toggle sometimes.. with my apple earbuds, the toggle worked flawless: single tap is pause, double tap to next track, triple to go back.

With these:
The button is "jerky" so It's sometimes harder to get the same sensitivity (easier to mistakenly press twice instead of a clean triple tap)

Its one tiny button to locate (a pain in the neck when wearing gloves. The whole mic is like one big button with the apple ones),

And a lot of times the unit arbitrarily decides what your button taps mean: Like I may mean to double tap, but it's not quick enough, and it treats it as a triple tap??? Never if I try to do that on purpose though.

Verdict: Good sound quality, but not so great mechanics on the toggle. But you buy earphones for sound in the end right?.. by that measure it trumps any I've ever used.

The North Face Hustle Stripe Triclimate Jacket - Men's

The North Face Hustle Stripe Triclimate Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2009

I would give it 4 stars for the fact that the liner does not secure in the jacket all that well, but I bump it back up to 5 when I think about how the liner is still usable and okay looking on its own (I'm wearing it right now at my desk.) This is only my second day using it, and so far my preferred way to use this is with the liner not secured in at all, so it just basically becomes a waterproof/windproof shell over a sweater (the liner).I have a military coat with a button in liner, but the liner is useless, ugly, and unzippable (is that a word?) by itself.. also contributing to my 5 star rating for the Hustle. It truly is a 3 in 1, you can use any combination of the parts or use them individually.I was pleasantly surprised to open the wrist pocket and find a goggle cloth, with its own small plastic buckle to secure it.. this jacket is definitely one for the slopes. This also comes in handy if you wear glasses like me.I may add more comments in the next couple weeks when I go snowboarding again and give this jacket its baptism of fire.Feel free to ask me questions

Added 1/20/10: I got a chance to use this on the slopes over the weekend, in pretty nasty conditions. It was raining when I first got out there, and remained wet the rest of the day of course.. pluses: not crowded, and since it wasn't freezing, it wasn't icy either. Downside: it was really wet. But the Hustle held up well.. the outside appeared to be soaked after a while, and the jacket did seem slightly heavier, but I was totally dry underneath (also wearing the liner) except for sweat.

I found another gripe though, that I only noticed after I bought a lift ticket: With a helmet compatible hood, snow skirt, mp3 player pocket, pants compatibility, and hip styling, you would think this was made for the snowboarder, yet a lift ticket attachment point thingy is totally absent from the design?? Minor, I know, but a convenience that many of my other coats and pants have (the columbia pants I wore that day didnt have it either!).

But it definitely works where it counts, protecting you from the elements, 5 star still stands..

The North Face Duboce Insulated Wool Jacket - Men's

The North Face Duboce Insulated Wool Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 28, 2009

I'm 5' 10" 190 lbs, and a medium is fitted just perfectly to wear a thin longsleeve underneath... Not too much layering can be done underneath this, unless maybe you go with a large if you're my size. You maybe could get away with a light sweater, or thermal under a thin shirt.

But then again, I look at this as a nice warm jacket to wear casually, definitely not for a hike or snowboarding trip. And still it is definitely warm and effective on cold days..

If you're looking for style, it comes with this jacket. Trust me, you will get comments everywhere you go.

Now, my only issue with this jacket, and it's rather minor, is the way the water resistant zippers work... they are hard to negotiate with one hand, you kind of have to hold the coat with one hand and zip with the other to cleanly open and close the zipper. And be careful because it will sometimes snag on the lining inside the pocket... I already tore a tiny hole in my hand warmer pocket liner trying to wrestle a snag free... Definitely not enough of an issue to send it back.

My fiance got it for me for this Christmas and I've worn it everyday since so far!!

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Vest - Men's

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 17, 2009

This is a great low-bulk/high-warmth vest. Like another reviewer said it is kind of big around the waist, but it does have waist cinches.. I should've bought the medium myself (I have a large) but I imagine the large is fine if you will layer this over a thicker fleece maybe? I actually like to wear this under my North Face Salinas jacket for really low temperatures: you'll be warm with virtually no bulk. I imagine this would be a nice combo with other light or medium north face jackets as well. I accidentally zipped these two jackets together once.. not designed to be a liner for the Salinas obviously, but there are other shells that are made for this vest to be zipped in as a liner.

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 17, 2009

This is a great jacket, good looking and works well. It's size and fit allows you mobility while still having some protection from the elements. I wear this in light rain, temps between 45-60 degrees, and I like to use it as a layering piece too underneath a waterproof shell, if I'm snowboarding, or hiking in cold weather. It even stands nicely on its own style wise in the early spring for a night out at the bar. Style and function ftw
