Optimus Crux Lite with Terra Solo Cook Set

May 20, 2010

This is a pretty nice set for the price/ weight.... I have the pot, but not the stove. If you're wanting to cook for more than one person, it's gonna be kind of time consuming. If ya got the time, it's no problem. You might want to look into the GSI Halulite Microdualist cook set for more than one person. No stove, but excellent pot set. Hope this helps.

Merrell Wilderness Backpacking Boot - Men's

April 5, 2010

I usually replace the laces in all my boots and trail shoes with 550 paracord. The color selection is endless, some even having 3M reflective material woven into the cord, which is visible from 500 ft in headlight or high-powered led spot. Just search for 550 paracord on ebay, it's usually a couple of bucks for 30-50 ft.

GoLite Odyssey Pack - 5500cu in

May 5, 2009

You need to measure your torso (from the bas of your neck to your waistline)- but you'll probably be better off with the women's version. The pack does compact in to a day pack of sorts, but it's not the easiest thing to do and looks a bit silly. Also, having all this room (5500 ci) kind of encourages you to bring more gear than you really need, so unless you're going to use it for a week or more, it might be overkill.

Actually, it's closer to 7 pounds (6 lbs, 14 oz). While this is an extremely durable pack, and will hold up to some pretty severe conditions- there are several lighter options that have the same capacity and more. One option you may want to check out is the GoLite Odyssey at 3 lbs, 8 oz and a 5500 ci carry capacity. http://www.backcountry.com/store/GOL0316/GoLite-Odyssey-Pack-5500cu-in.html

Sea To Summit Pocket Trowel

Sea To Summit Pocket Trowel

Rating for this product: 3 April 14, 2009

I can't say it's a bad product, but you can get a fiskars composite trowel at walmart for one dollar, and it weighs just 2 oz.- only difference is it doesn't fold up, but it does have storage in the handle. Quite a bit cheaper.

Nite Ize Figure 9 Rope Tightener - Small

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

I use these things for backpacking (most ultra-light backpackers would shun me for this). They are not a necessity, but are EXTREMELY handy for putting up and tensioning a tarp-shelter, as well as hanging a line for drying clothes, etc. I carry 2 and they weigh about 1.5 oz apiece.

ALPS Mountaineering Cortez Backpack - 4900cu in

March 29, 2009

Yes, this pack would work decent for that, but you may want to consider just a little bit more room. The GoLite Odyssey, at 5500-5800 ci. would be a fine choice, and only weighs 3.5 pounds.

The North Face Terra 40 Backpack - 2450cu in

March 26, 2009

Most likely. As long as your torso is under 20 inches you will be fine. To measure your torso, measure from the base of your neck (run your fingers down your neck and the first vertebrae you feel is where you need to start measuring) to the middle of your waistline. Measure a few times until you consistently get the same number to ensure accuracy. BTW... this same pack is 90 bucks on cabela's website.

If you have a small face, then no, they would look fine. I tried them on and they looked like little kids glasses on me... but my head is the size of a watermelon. Style-wise they are unisex though.

GSI Outdoors Bowl LEX - 6 in

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

I carry 1 of these in my pack, and my dog carries 2 in hers- I gave up on the leaky collapsibles for her food and water. These are lighter, anyway, and also help to protect the dry food and treats from getting crushed in her pack (she's a little clutzy and sometimes tries to fit places her pack won't allow, resulting in crushed food). And they're bombproof!

Granite Gear Toughsacks

Granite Gear Toughsacks

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

Tough little sack, but an inner flap would make this product a lot better. All in all very handy to have a bunch of these laying around. I use the 2 of the #3's to stuff my tent and rain fly seperately, in case the fly is wet when it's time to pack up and hit the trail. That way my tent won't fester in the moisture also. I use the #6 for my clothes.

GoLite Odyssey Expedition Pack - 5500-5800 cu in

GoLite Odyssey Expedition Pack - 5500-5800 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2009

I bought this pack last week and just got back from a 2-day backpacking trip in central Illinois. What an awesome pack for the price! holds a ton of gear and really doesn't look that obnoctious when fully loaded. Got rained on for about an hour on saturday and everything in the pack stayed nice and dry. I bought the large because I am about 6 ft tall, have a 34 inch waist, and I have a long torso for my height (22.5 in). It rode very well on my back and did a good job transferring the weight to my hips. I had it loaded with about 30 lbs. (packed for comfort, not worried about weight) that ioncluded my water and food. Hydration packet worked well. A great value for a 5500 ci pack that weighs under 4 lbs, seems VERY durable.

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon - Breakfast Entree

Rating for this product: 4 March 9, 2009

Pretty good for a fast, easy trail breakfast. I let the bag sit opened for about 6 minutes and the extra water had evaporated, so I didn't think it was too soggy or too salty. Good size portion for one person.

Coleman Pocket Bowl

March 3, 2009

Can anyone attest to this really being leakproof for more than 10 minutes? I would like to use this as my dog's waterdish. I've tried other collapsibles that leak after holding water fine for the first 10 to 15 minutes.
