Marmot Limelight 2-Person 3-Season Tent with Footprint and Gear Loft

March 5, 2012

The discrepancy in weights that you're referring to is likely the difference between trail weight (tent, fly, poles, minimal stakes) vs. max weight (tent, fly, poles, all stakes, stuff sacks, etc). Marmot lists the minimum weight (trail weight) for the 2012 incarnation of tent at 4lb 10oz. Im not sure whether that measurement is accurate or not because I don't own the tent, but maybe some other reviewers out there could help you nail that down.

Park Tool Home Mechanic Floor Pump - PFP-5

Park Tool Home Mechanic Floor Pump - PFP-5

Rating for this product: 2 November 7, 2011

Don't get me wrong; this thing does what it's supposed to do in terms of putting air into tires. But the attachment system is not designed well, and I've already broken two presta valves trying to attach/detach the pump. Pulling the pump off the valve is especially difficult and has resulted in several dinged knuckles followed by cursing. I haven't had an issue with the feet falling off like the other reviewer mentioned, but they generally seem pretty flimsy and don't support the pump all that well.

In all, this pump will get the job done, but I agree with the other reviewer ... totally expected more from something with the Park Tool name on it. Spend your money on something with better quality and a better design.

Solid bike, solid price

Fuji Bicycles Cross Comp Bike

Fuji Bicycles Cross Comp Bike

Rating for this product: 5 October 11, 2011

From the moment I opened the box, I was impressed with the Fuji Cross Comp. Unlike other companies that just pile a frame and a bunch of components into a box, slap a label on it, and ship it out, Fuji prepared and packaged this one to the nines. The components were attached and tuned, the bars were wrapped, and the brakes and shifters ready to go. Even the tires on and mostly filled with air. All I had to do was throw on the wheels, attach the bars to the stem, set the derailleur limits, tweak the brakes, and top off the tires, and this thing was ready to go. That's the way it's done, Fuji!

As for the ride, I've only had it out a few times so far, but so far it's been awesome. The 105 component set shifts crisp and smooth, and the carbon fork really dampens the ride. The aluminum frame is (obviously) plenty stiff, but it's also surprisingly smooth and quiet. The seat position felt a little funny at first, but the stock post lets you adjust it both forward and back as well the nose/rear cant.

I'm planning on using it as my everyday bike for winter commuting, trail riding, and occasional cross races ... pretty versatile workload. For everything you get from this set for the price, it's hard to find anything to complain about.

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski

October 4, 2011

Hey JonnyReb. This (and all other BD skis) are designed so you can mount them with any binding-style you prefer. You'll see telemark, AT, tech, and standard DIN (downhill) binders used on the Megawatt. It's a great ride and loads of fun no matter how you mount it.

Book: ABC's of Avalanche Safety - 3rd Edition

Rating for this product: 4 January 22, 2011

I found the book to be rather informative, compact, and convenient. The photos and diagrams inside are easy to understand and they help support the concepts in the text. The information is well organized and presented and, overall, I found it to be a great supplement and resource.

Classic Mike and Allen

Book: Allen and Mikes Backcountry Ski Book

Book: Allen and Mikes Backcountry Ski Book

Rating for this product: 5 January 22, 2011

I had the privilege of meeting Mike Clelland a few years back and it's cool to see his personality shine through in his illustrations here. Overall, the book is super informal, easy to read, and fun to pick up. The information on avalanches was a bit sparse, but, as the authors fully admit, you need to take a professional-grade class and practice those skills first hand. I also thought they devoted a lot of time to winter camping and cooking skills, which is important and was certainly informative, but I thought that info was disproportionally represented in the book at the expense of more detailed info on the ski itself. Anyway, don't let those two observations dissuade you--it's an awesome book and should be part of any backcountry skier's library.

Huge Bag, Solid Deal

DAKINE Concourse Double Ski Bag

DAKINE Concourse Double Ski Bag

Rating for this product: 5 January 22, 2011

The concourse is an awesome bag with a huge amount of space. Not only did it fit my powder skis, groomer skis, and boots, it also had plenty of space left over for my ski clothes. In short, I just had a small carry on for the plane and everything else I needed for the week fit in the concourse. Of course, packing all that stuff in made it pretty heavy, but that was a small price to pay for the convenience of having everything in one place.

Not sure how, but kleen kanteen ' seems to withstand drops without denting better than other stainless bottles. Did leak on occasion. the powdercoat has lasted longer than I expected it would. overall, better than plastic bottles for keeping water cooler on hot backcountry days

Great durability like most lexan bowls. this is a little deeper than the older lexan bowl which is nice for bigger portions, but makes it difficult to lick out if you're trying to minimize your dish washing.

Great Headlamp

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 February 12, 2010

This is a very powerful and versatile headlamp for the price. While ultralight backpacking purists may take issue with the size and the weight, I think that 3oz is not very heavy for the amount of power this headlamp provides. I've used it for both winter camping and cycling thus far and have been thoroughly impressed with the light output of the superbright white LED light. It takes other lamps constellations of up to 4 regular LED lights to match this lamps output with a single bulb. The lamp is super energy efficient as well and battery life tends to last a long time without diminishing brightness (as can be the case with other LEDs). To echo a comment that other reviewers have made, the red light function is also a great feature to use in situations where minimal light is best (i.e. not disturbing a sleeping tent mate or preserving your night vision for stargazing).

Solid Jacket from Patagonia

Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hooded Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 25, 2010

Patagonia's down sweater is a staple of their product line... its a warm, lightweight and highly packable jacket. It works very well on its own and as a part any layering system. At 15 oz. it has a very high warmth to weight ratio, which means that there's rarely a reason not to bring it along.

This is the second puffy jacket I have purchased from Patagonia and have found with both that they are sized up one size larger than my normal size. I typically wear a size L for all my shirts and jackets, but found that M fits me better for this jacket. Although I have somewhat less room to layer under it, the M has a much more natural fit for me.

The down in this jacket is quality 800 fill down as well, which means that it can survive multiple and frequent compressing and bounce back to shape and retain a good amount of loft. Some people have complained about Patagonia's decrease in zipper quality over the past few years, but I haven't seen any evidence of that in the two Patagonia puffy jackets I've owned.
