I received my coat today after two weeks of waiting, and boy what a disappointment. While the coat looks and feels nice (as I expected), this one will be going back tomorrow because of two major issues: poor fit and lack of insulation/down. I hope others do not waste the time that I did.
I consider myself quite average in size and dimensions (5'10",190, 42-44 chest) for contemporary Americans. Sure I could lose a few, but I do not consider myself abnormal in terms of shoulder size or arm length. I ordered a large thinking I would be fine. Wrong. The arms are a bit long, but that I can deal with. The cut around the shoulders and armpits, however, seems totally off when compared to the other dimensions of this coat. Wearing just a t-shirt, the coat feels tight in the armpits and quite uncomfortable. For a winter parka that would normally be worn over a light sweater this is totally unacceptable. This poor fit is the major deal-breaker for me, an might explain why this seemingly awesome coat is on 'closeout' in many stores.
Lack of down:
Even if you are skinny with narrow shoulders and long arms and this strange coat manages to fit you, I would advise against it because it does not seem to have that much down in it. The dirty secret of down is that 'fill power' (550, 650, 800, etc.) refers to the quality (insulation to weight ratio) of the down but not the quantity of the down in the coat. Sure this has 650 down, but there does not seem to be that much of it in the coat - especially in the sleeves. This small amount of down maybe fine when the temps are int he 20s and 30s, but when it is -10 (as it is right now) the cold goes right through the sleeves.
Save yourself the time and do not but this coat unless you get a chance to try it on in person.
