Lib Technologies T.Rice Pro C2BTX HP Point Tip Snowboard

May 15, 2012

take a look at the specs of the T Rice 164.5 and the skunk ape 169. The specs are identical (running length, tip/tail width, etc). The only difference is the skunk ape is 0.5 cm wider in waist width. Personally I'd go for a shorter board that runs long. Best of both worlds for pow and non-pow days.

perfect split skin!

G3 Alpinist Split Board Skin

G3 Alpinist Split Board Skin

Rating for this product: 5 March 3, 2012

used these on the lib trice split, 164.5 cm. used size medium skins. Had to do minimal trimming.

Glue is great in mix of temperatures. Used the skins in everything from a 15 degree morning with fresh pow (8") to warming later in the day encountering soft warm snow, crust, and ice. Skins literally went up anything. Very tough too- went right over rocks, pine needles and twigs sticking up in the snow. No damage to skins. Even went through parking lot mash potatoes with sand and salt. No damage- nothing stuck to skins!

In the field, the skins separate easily from the board and themselves. You don't need to do shoulder exercises to pull them apart- very easy. They glide well on flat sections and there is no slippage on steep sections.

Tip and tail connection is top notch and what splitboarders have been waiting for! Better than the Voile skins and they have a tail clip too! Cheaper than buying Voile skins and an aftermarket tail connector from Sparks R&D. The G3 skins also come with "cheat sheets". Great value for a complete set up requiring no modifications.

Overall- everything you need, zero modification to mount to splitboards, and tours great in mixed conditions! Perfect!

Lib Technologies T.Rice Pro Model Splits C2BTX HP Splitboard

Lib Technologies T.Rice Pro Model Splits C2BTX HP Splitboard

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2012

foot- 11.5, weight 205, height 6'2". I mounted up the 164.5 to a pair of Karakoram Split30 bindings with G3 skins. The board alone is noticeably lighter than the regular t.rice pro. The whole set up is similar in weight (judged by holding under my arm) to a normal board set up with my pair of burton co2 bindings. The board tours really well and only requires some attention when skinning straight up a steeper section. Given the rockered nose, all I had to do was sit back a little on steeper sections to utilize the grip of the skin better. The rockered nose really helps skinning in fresh powder. The rocker also is different to get used to going cross trail, especially on hardpack/crust/ice. Just took a little bit of time to find that sweet spot for gripping with the edges. It's a different beast than a full cambered splitboard, but it took me one trip (up and down hill) to figure out how to handle the lib tech in tour-mode.

For ride mode- it rides like a solid board. Period. The construction is top notch and transfers energy equally to each edge and is very responsive. There is no loss of power, no chatter at speed, etc. Ride quality is not affected by this being a split board. Rode well switch, popped off rollers, and handled in-bounds terrain like a normal board. I did a few lift-accessed runs and did not have one problem with enjoying my day. When the board came it was actually signed by the person who built it- giving authenticity to where this came from- the USA. Holes are all well installed and lined up perfect for the Karakoram bindings. Zero complaints! Worth every penny (if you got it on sale!).

Lib Technologies Mark Landvik Phoenix C2BTX Snowboard

Lib Technologies Mark Landvik Phoenix C2BTX Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2012

Boot- 11.5, weight 205, height 6'2". I ride hard, all mountain. Love glades, steep groomers, and pow days. Coming off a lib trs 167 and a t.rice 164.5, I was skeptical to go down to the Lando 160. I was not disappointed!

The phoneix is rated as a 6.5 flex with the TRS and T.Rice being a 7. Holding the board and flex testing it, I would agree. Riding the Lando however, I would rate it an 8. The bamboo risers must have something to do with it- they're wide and cover the whole stance area for each foot. This does not make this board flexible when riding, but makes it extremely aggressive for riding fast. The construction enables it to blast through chop, slop and chowder (moguled up pow). With the set back stance of about 1", it easily surfed through knee deep pow. First time I felt that I could enjoy pow days with shorter board. The set back stance also really helps with carving hard. The lando is very fast edge to edge and does not chatter or wash out. The only down side (if this is a downside) is that it's too easy to do really hard, deep heelside carves, and with the narrower waist than a T.Rice or TRS, I found that I was dragging heel cups/heel of boot often. It's only a few mm narrower than the 164.5 T.Rice but it's noticeable for size 11.5 boot. This doesn't detract from the board, just have to be aware when laying ruts.

There's also a lot of snap with the board- moreso than the T.Rice and TRS. The Lando really transfers foot energy to board energy and really ollies easily and high. Great on booters of medium-large size. The base is very durable- I have hit many a rock and tree stump without any scratches or dents. I find the TNT bases to be equally fast to the sintered bases- just requires a good wax with Bluebird! On flat cross cuts (my judge of base quality and wax)- the lando flew by everyone.

This board is fantastic for a hard charging advanced rider. I would not recommend to an entry level/intermediate rider.

Lib Technologies T.Rice Pro Model C2 BTX Points Snowboard

Lib Technologies T.Rice Pro Model C2 BTX Points Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2012

I am coming off a lib mc kink 157 and trs 167. The 164.5 matches the specs of my 167 trs. This year's T Rice model is a little softer than previous years and has some mellow magnetraction (not too grippy). The c2 is a great blend to float pow, butter, but maintain great solid pop and stability at speed. I found the 2012 model to be softer, more fun, and lighter than the 2009/10 model previously owned. It's a bit wider in waist width than most boards, which if you're an aggressive rider will add some stability and float. Board is incredibly quick edge to edge despite waist width. Very stable for east coast conditions which to date have been mostly blue ice, man made packed snow and pow. The board excelled in each condition type. Expensive board, but money well spend. Durability is great, art is fantastic. I'm 6'2", 210 lbs, and 11.5 feet. Zero complaints!

Lib Technologies T.Rice Pro Model C2 BTX Points Snowboard

January 19, 2012

Generally no, but depends in how you ride. I'm 6-2, 210 lbs and ride boards 157 - 167. I have the 164.5 T Rice and it's perfect and the specs actually match my TRS 167 while shaving off a few cm in length and weight. I consider the 164.5 perfect with a centered stance and is great for all mountain, big jumps and the pow. Buttering and flat tricks are super easy given the flex patter on the board too. Can't comment on rails. If you are an experienced rider, you can adapt to length pretty quickly. The length will give you the necessary stability you need for mixed conditions, icy/harpack surfaces and plowing through crud and spring slush, and give you the running length for speed, if that's your thing.

nice but limited vision

Oakley Splice Goggle

Oakley Splice Goggle

Rating for this product: 3 January 7, 2010

Just got them in the mail and they fit smaller than I expected. I still have nose pinch (similar to Oakley Wisdom), but I think that's going to be a personal issue. The concept is nice, but not really original. Dragon Mace sort of applies the same anti-nose pinch structure to the frame and for me, the Dragon mace goggle fit much better. To compare range of vision, the easiest for me is to do the same technique when trying a new dive mask. Put it on, turn your head down and try to see your feet. I can see my feet and a lot of stuff on the sides when wearing the Dragon mace. I can more easily see the ground when looking around. This is not true for the splice. I put them on, look down and cannot see my feet. To me that's a problem because ultimately you want to easily see what you're riding over or through. Dragon Mace also fits much better with a Giro G10 helmet- no gaps, spaces etc. The Splice does not fill the goggle area of the helmet as well and actually pushes it up slightly for me. Again maybe a personal issue, but something to consider. I'm returning the Oakley splice and sticking to Dragon.

Lib Technologies TRS BTX Snowboard

November 2, 2009

TNT base is awesome. I have the 08 TRS and it truly needs less maintenance (waxing) than a sintered base. Very fast and durable- hardly a scratch on the base from a full season of riding. If you keep it waxed normally, you won't have a problem. My friends have the skate banana and the TRice. Both those boards have sintered bases. We all waxed with the same brand (Bluebird). Both got slower throughout the day due to wax shedding off more quickly. The TRS kept its speed over multiple days (a full 6 in a row!) with no need for waxing. They almost had to do a full wax every 2 days. The Lib sintered bases appear to need a more thorough waxing. You can't go wrong with the TNT if you don't like to wax a lot.

Lib Technologies MC Kink BTX Snowboard

September 21, 2009

I've got the MC kink 157 and 08 TRS 167 BTX and my wife has the T Rice 157 Btx (08). I can tell you the MC Kink is by far the most fun board I have ever been on. Soft, smooth and fast. I was a little nervous going way down in size from my usual 167 cm, but I couldn't get over how stable the MC was when I needed it and how forgiving and flexy it was for playing. It rides switch very well too. The T Rice is stiffer (like the TRS) and does not have as much rocker to it compared to the MC Kink. I can't imagine how you could go wrong with a kinky banana.

Better than I ever expected

Lib Technologies TRS BTX Snowboard

Lib Technologies TRS BTX Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2008

Not sure how I felt buying this deck because reviews have been mixed on other chat boards. Slow base, terrible pop, tech is hyped too much. Let the haters hate. Lib tech is great and thank baby jeebus, they're made in the USA. Coming from an east coaster in Maine, I'm used to variable conditions: 3 ft pow days, blue ice on 40 degree pitches, man-made groomers. At 200 lbs and 6'2", I picked up the Lib Tech TRS BTX 167 cm from Backcountry and I couldn't be happier. My Lib cherry has been popped and I'm not going back.

The BTX is not very dramatic. The Magnetraction is subdued, which isn't a bad thing. The Banana reverse camber is also mild. More of a lift in the nose than the tail however. Riding the MTX was a dream. It carved like a normal edged board- I did not notice drag or feel like the MTX took control. But on ice, or sketchy conditions, the MTX gripped like a billy goat. Hands down, I'm a big fan. The banana made me nervous because I haul. I'd rather go Mach 5 than play in the park all day. Banana was awesome! It took less energy to carve compared to riding a cambered board. Because the board is already flexed into a carve position, the deck literally rolls over into a carve w/out even having to think about it. No more bending kness together to get a cambered board to hug a carve. This thing does it naturally and it couldn't be better! The TRS locks into a carve that can be held indefinitely, but can pop out of a carve effortlessly. Amazing. Plus, riding switch has never felt more stable. The BTX is superior in all conditions. It rides up over pow and chunky ice cookies of death. The TRS just hauls over variable or changing terrain. It's like riding a full suspension mountain bike, which to me is like riding a sofa through the woods.

The base is fast. People, if you think the TNT base is slow, try waxing it yourself with some quality wax. I use Bluebird. 1 part cold temp w/ 1 part all temp. Perfect. I couldn't tell the difference between the TNT base an sintered base from other high-end boards. It's a matter of keeping a good wax on it. Bluebird is hard wax and last a long time- but that's another review all together. Lib puts the TNT bases on multiple models for a reason. It's tough and fast, and if you're lazy it doesn't NEED as much maintenance.

The TRS also pops. There's not another way to describe it. Crazy pop... off rollers, jumps, children. Just sick. Overall riding this board is fun, effortless, less strenuous..the TRS BTX dominates. I'm on the larger side (11.5 boot) and I was worried that a 167 would be huge. With a centered, wide stance, it doesn't feel huge. It's stable at fast speeds, carves, butters, and pops, but has the length for deep days. Still can't wipe the grin off my face. Go get one!

Lib Technologies TRS BTX Snowboard

August 23, 2008

anyone out there know how the 167 cm btx handles everyday riding (groomers, free ride etc.)? I'm 6'2", 200 lbs and have been riding a long time... backcountry to resorts. I'm used to riding 163-168.5 cm boards and love hauling on the longer lengths. Needed longer lib tech due to larger waist width (something over 25.9 cm width). Plus with my weight and height, andything under a 163 is squirrely IMO. No sure how the 167 TRS bananna will ride though. Any reviews? Thanks!

Burton AK 2L Stagger Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 27, 2007

These are great pants with cool style. Vents are uniquely placed to open and close as you walk, cycling air. Zippers really are waterproof and wind proof. They have fleece lining only in the seat, not the knees however (as advertised) and the gore-tex material is very very light... so these aren't the warmest pair of over pants you could wear. Also fit is smaller and tighter than previous seasons- Burton isn't as consistent with their sizing as they should be. If you're on the larger size of a Large pant, I'd go up to an XL. If you hike a lot and earn your turns these are the pants. If you do a little of everything, maybe consider something else.

Burton 3L Sqwawk Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 26, 2007

I love Gore Tex and I love Gore Tex soft shell material. This jacket incorporates breathable, waterproof tech, and stretchy fabric where you need it- shoulders and back, the full back! Two way stretchy and breathable which is great when wearing a pack or throwing a 540. The waterproof RIRI zippers are crazy- you can literally pool water on top of them with zero leakage (yes I took a shower in it). Jacket is light and breathable. Gore soft shell is very very breathable for backcountry use and I have stayed warm with the fleece liner and windproof quality when sitting on a lift. Great in spring conditions with a light base layer. I have never had wet under layers wearing this softshell and I've never been chilled to the bone. This is the most substantial jacket by Burton to day- quality material, stitching, design and fit. There are no inner pockets though, which could be improved to store a hat or extra gloves. That's my only complaint. I think it's the perfect front and backcountry jacket for riders. The offset center zip is nice as it comes up to your ear, not your lips so you don't end up eating cold metal all winter. By the way, showering in your jacket is a great way to test breathability and waterproofness...at least that's what I tell the wife.

Sorry to say, that these boots are not all they're cracked up to be like I first believed. True, they are great out of the box, but past 6 days, I had a hole wear through the heel from my binding (my binding!), the boa knob had to be re-glued onto the tounge of the boots with epoxy, and the handle loops on the back started ripping off. All this after 6 days! And no, I didn't drag them behind my car going 60. I'm going back to Salomon Malamutes cause I never had a problem with those bad boys. Plus, the DC allegiance got very soft. Too much tech, not enough attention to quality especially for a stiff boot.

Black Diamond Gradient Trekking Poles - 1 pair

Rating for this product: 5 August 9, 2006

After using twist lock poles from komperdell in the Wasatch and Tetons all winter, I decided to try something that would work in freezing temperatures and was easy to adjust using gloves and mittens. Twist lock is fine for warm temps, but the plastic pieces inside don't lock and get icy in the winter. These Black Diamond poles are fantastic: the cork grip will hold up for many years compared to foam and the flick lock on the upper and snap lock on the lower shaft are so simple to use even with the bulkiest of gloves. Already comes w/ powder baskets so you don't need to buy an additional set.

They stand up. Period. Warm days, pow days, wet days and everything in between. Vents are super for hiking. Burton AK is solid from 8F and below and they keep you cool when it's 55F on the hill in April or you’re standing in a sweaty tram with burrito flavor. Bombproof materials stand the abuse of backcountry riding. Maybe someone who gets cold in these pants sits in the snow instead of shredding it.

Burton AK Continuum Fuse Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 1, 2006

Ok, the concept is good—no stitching. It is super light, however flimsy. I expected a substantial jacket from Burton, not a wind breaker. Good zippers, but fabric... boo! Breathable? NO. Tried it on over a fleece shirt-instant. Sweat is death in backcountry. It was like wrapping myself in saran wrap. The fit was supper baggy like a free poncho you get at Niagra Falls, and it felt honestly like a garbage bag kids wear when it rains on the slopes. I can't imagine using it in the backcountry. The nylon fabric is so slick, a backpack slides around a lot, plus it looked ridiculous with all the extra fabric flapping around the pack straps once cinched down. Want to put something in the pockets? Unless you want to look like you have tumors growing out of you, don't bother. I would call it fancy rain coat that doesn't breath. Maybe you like to get sweaty and cold. Not me.
