Cut's Like a Knife but Weighs too Much

Gerber Gator Saw I

Gerber Gator Saw I

Rating for this product: 3 November 8, 2004

Great saw. Packs up nicely, cuts great, easy to assemble/disassemble. However, it isn't lite enough to warrant it on the kind of backpacking trips I take. I guess if you were going to go crazy and cut up a bunch of wood on a backcountry hike, then it might be worth it; otherwise, this is dead weight.

I took these with me on a three day trip up in the Santa Fe Wilderness and they held up decently. They offered a nice substitute for hiking boots although the toe loop ended up being a nuisance. Another review mentioned how they would tighten up while going down-hill; I found that they tightened up no matter what. Perhaps it is just me, but I found the constriction to be a bit uncomfortable. As far as offering support over a day's hike, I have nothing but admiration.

An altitude bust

Brunton Helios Stormproof Lighter

Brunton Helios Stormproof Lighter

Rating for this product: 2 October 25, 2004

While on a trip to the Santa Fe Wilderness, this piece gave up at about 10,000 ft. It was our only source of fire (my mistake) and when it didn't work in the morning (probably due to the altitude), eating cold food was not pleasant. If you want to stay at low altitudes and have a windproof lighter, than this is the one. However, for $50 bucks, you could probably buy a lot of other stuff that will keep you in fire and warm foot a lot better.

Awesome

Marmot Helium EQ Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Marmot Helium EQ Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2004

This sleeping bag is the best. On a trip into the Santa Fe Wilderness, this sleeping bag kept me warm on several nights where the temperatures dropped below freezing. I slept in a t-shirt and skivies and was toasty throughout the night. It also kept dry after heavy condensation (due to poor tent set up) soaked everything else in the tent. My only complaint is that they smell funny; however, my girlfriend (who also owns one) doesn't agree.--You decide. If you want something lite, packable, and awesome (and don't mind the price), this is definitely a great buy.

Great Sleeping Bag

This is a great, though pricey sleeping bag. It has amazing loft (which can be a pain when trying to stuff) and packs down to a manageable size (the weight to cold protection ratio is great). I haven't used it in 15 degree weather yet, but so far it has kept me comfortable while camping in cooler climes.

Great 2 person tent

Marmot Junction Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Marmot Junction Tent 2-Person 3-Season

I bought the Junction for light weekend camping and have been very pleased. The floor space is large enough to accommodate two people comfortably and it is tall enough that you can sit up (if you aren't too tall). I was also really happy with how well it kept condensation out of the tent. Spring mornings can be a little wet in the Metroplex area and there wasn't a drop of water in our tent come morning. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a decent three season tent.
