Not Durable, Doesn't Close all the Way

Arc'teryx C40 Chalk Bag

Arc'teryx C40 Chalk Bag

Rating for this product: 3 September 29, 2010

This bag serves its purpose well. I don't have very large hands, so it does fit me fine.

This bag does not close well. I really have to pull on the draw string in order to prevent chalk from spilling out. After about a month of use, that lead to the grommet that the drawstring goes through breaking off. There is a plastic piece inside of the bag that the drawstring is fed through that came out as well. Now, in order to close it, I have to push this piece back through the hole, and pull on one side of the drawstring to tighten it.

All of the Arc'teryx bags look like they have the same design for the drawstring closure.

I plan on replacing this and going with a different brand bag in the future.

Great Belay Device

Black Diamond ATC-XP

Black Diamond ATC-XP

Rating for this product: 5 September 24, 2010

Great price.

Bomb proof.

Great friction for belaying the big boys.

I have no problem belaying someone much larger than me with this device. For the kiddies, I simply flip it around and use the low friction side. Great product, definitely a great improvement on the standard ATC.

Black Diamond Quicksilver Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond Quicksilver Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 September 24, 2010

I bought both the screw lock and autolocking versions of this biner. I didn't want the auto locker, but my local store only had one screw lock version in stock so I grabbed one of each. I have no regrets.

I spent a Saturday belaying kids who were climbing and rapping. I used the autolocker as my belay biner and the screw lock for anchoring me. The autolocker was great for constantly switching rap lines. Ropes move smoothly through the biner. Price is right, and they are not to heavy either.

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

Rating for this product: 4 September 24, 2010

I picked up this harness as my first. It's a major upgrade in terms of comfort and features over the loaner harnesses at the gym.

There are plenty of gear loops for me.

My only issue with BD harnesses is the sizing. This is why I give a 4 and not a 5. Although, it could just be me. I'm a 32"-33" inch waist. The Large was much too big for me. The waist was over lapping so bad at the buckle that I didn't feel secure in it. So I picked up the medium instead. The medium just barely fit me enough for me to tuck the tail end of the waist into it's loop. I still get about 6 inches of tail, but I have to wear the harness at it's tightest point.

With that said, it's not uncomfortable, it just worries me that I will have to go up to a bigger size as I climb more and put on additional muscle mass. I have worn the harness for over 8 hours straight outdoors and didn't even notice it on me.

Amazing

SmartWool Hiking Medium Crew Sock

SmartWool Hiking Medium Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 July 1, 2010

I wore one pair of these socks every day for 9 days straight of hiking in the rain in Wyoming. I do not wear liners with these. They are very comfortable on the skin. I had a second pair with me to sleep in at night. It was in the 50's during the day and down in the 30's at night. My feet stayed nice and cool during the day and warm enough at night. Best of all, they don't stink!

First Poles, Never Look Back

LEKI Super Makalu COR-TEC Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

LEKI Super Makalu COR-TEC Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 4 June 18, 2010

These are the first set of trekking poles I have used, and I have to say that I will never go hiking or backpacking without them again.

I have always wanted trekking poles, but the price of them was a deterrent until I saw these on SAC for only $70. I was the only one with poles on the first trip that I went on, and right away noticed what a difference they make. The first day we did 10 miles and gained over 1k feet in elevation change, these helped out significantly with going up and down switchbacks. On flat ground, I was motoring on much faster than the rest of my group, to the point that someone asked me to put them away, because I was killing the vibe. Needless to say, I am totally sold on trekking poles and will never go without them again. To anyone with knee problems, I would highly recommend them if you are doing any climbing or long descents. They help out significantly on descents by taking the weight of your body, rather putting it all on your knees. On the way up, your upper body does most of the work by pushing off of your poles as support. I messed up my ankle on the first day of my last trip, climbs hurt the most, and the poles helped significantly in reducing the pain by bearing my weight.

These poles pack down nice and small when disassembled for transporting. They are easy to expand, lock and collapse on the go. They did not slip at all in 10 days of hiking. The carbide tips will grip onto any, I mean literally any surface, with ease. The first day out I was testing them on wet rock, and they stuck with no problem.

I didn't notice that the anti-shock made a difference. One of the anti-shock mechanisms stuck after only a few miles and I had to disassemble the pole to free it up. Also, the paint wears significantly after very little use, making it difficult to see the mark for proper height adjustment. I fixed this by marking over the line with a Sharpie marker. Also, these things get DIRTY. Without the baskets on, they collect a ton of mud in the threads above the tip of the pole. This isn't really an issue, until you try to put the baskets back on, I had to clean them in order to do so.

These were an excellent purchase and I would recommend trekking poles to anyone, as they allow you to move much faster with them. These are on SAC all the time, as well as other Leki poles.

Nice Yoga & Climbing Short

prAna Mojo Short - Men's

prAna Mojo Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 12, 2010

I use these for yoga & climbing. They are not restrictive at all and breathe very well. Ideal for warm yoga studios when wearing my pants is too uncomfortable. I hand washed them the first time, and they were very quick to dry. I look forward to backpacking and swimming in them this summer as well!

I am 32" waist & 166lbs, bought a large and they fit well...so as others have said, they run a little small. A medium would have fit, but the elastic waste band would have been stretched a little too much.

Nice, if I can find my size!!!

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 19, 2010

These pants are light weight and look great. BUT good luck finding them, anywhere. I live in Chicago, and no local retailers carry these.

Sizing is an issue though. I am a 32" waist, 33" inseam and bought the medium regular (long is no longer carried by Backcountry.com). The waist was perfect, but if I was an inch or two larger they would be too tight. The sizing chart lists the medium at 32"-34" inseam, but there is no way I could see a 34" waist fitting in to these.

Length was not good, which is why I am sending them back. The medium regular is too short for me, I have a 33" inseam. These barely come to the top of my boots.

Finding these pants in my size has proven to be literally impossible. BC.com and other retailers do not stock medium long, which is kind of mind boggling considering that 32"-34" waist x 33"-34" inseam is a very common length. BC.com told me that they are not going to get my size in this pant, which is VERY disappointing. Local retailers don't carry it at all, and as far as I know, there isn't a way to order directly from Mountain Hardware.

Simply great

The North Face Freedom Pant - Men's

The North Face Freedom Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 19, 2010

This is my second season with The North Face Freedom pant. They have held up great for skiing and just stomping around in the snow. The fit is great and they offer enough space for me to move around without any restrictions. I normally wear a 33" waist and have a 33" inseam (32" is too short, 34" is too long, I have to have everything tailored). These are the perfect length for ski boots and for my snow boots. I have worn mine with a Patagonia Capilene 2 base layer down to about 15 degrees and am plenty warm sitting on the ground, sled or on a chair lift. The cargo pocket is great for any extra stuff that won't fit in my jacket. One nice feature is the lift ticket clip in the pocket. There is one on my TNF Odyssey softshell jacket, but when in use it leaves a little opening that snow can get into the pocket through. I just use the clip on the pants, and that way I don't have to worry about my hand warmer pocket getting wet.

Good from SAC

Princeton Tec Fuel 3 Headlamp

Princeton Tec Fuel 3 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 February 13, 2010

I got this for 50% off on SAC. Ordering and shipping was super easy. For about $18 including shipping this was a steal! This is a very bright lamp with three settings for brightness and one flasher, which was a nice surprise. The button is also smart in the sense that if you click it off it will turn off, and you don't have to cycle through all of the settings. If you want to change the brightness you just click a little faster than you would to turn it on and off. My other light doesn't do this, I have to cycle through all of the settings in order to turn it off, so this is a very convenient feature. Some of the stitching on the headband was a little frayed out of the box, I will see how this holds up after use. I'm not worried though, because there is a five -year manufacturers warranty.I plan to use this for cycling at night as well as camping. It seems very durable, although it did take a small fall and switched off.

Warm & Dry

KEEN Blackcomb Winter Boot - Men's

KEEN Blackcomb Winter Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 25, 2010

I bought these boots for Chicago winters and being out in the snow. I was trying to decide between this and the Sorel Timberwolf, but after reading reviews about poor durability of new Sorel boots I took my chances with these. The fit is more like a shoe than other boots that I tried on, which is great for every day wear. I have worn these almost every day since the day I received them. They are light and easy to walk in. This boot isn't very tall, but keeps the snow out very well. I had them out in over a foot of snow and my feet were perfectly warm and bone dry. At first I only wore them with midweight wool hiking socks, now I just wear normal socks and they are just as warm.

The lacing system is good. It requires no effort to tighten them up at the top, because the boot cinches as you clip the lace through the top hook. However, it can be difficult to unlace the boot from the plastic hook at the top without using a lot of force. This can be cumbersome while standing leaned over, as the angle doesn't work very well. I also worry about the durability of the hook as it is plastic and I have to pull so hard to remove the lace. Also, it is virtually impossible to keep the laces from untying without double-knotting them. The laces are a little too short for double-knotting and tend to stick up and out from the boot. If it wasn't for these issues, I would have given the boot five stars.

These boots fit me about a half size smaller than regular shoes, so I had to go with an 11.5 rather than my normal 11. This is my time buying Keen footwear, and I am very satisfied with the product and company as a whole.

I had to order over the phone on 12/26 from Backcountry, which was super easy. Using free shipping, the boots arrived on 1/4, which I thought was very fast when considering the holidays.

Reef Fanning Flip Flop - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 14, 2009

I have been wearing these since they came out a few years ago. Haven't had to replace them after probably three summers now. Bottle opener is perfect once you get the hang of it.

These are the most comfortable flip flop I've ever worn. The neoprene strap is extremely comfortable. I don't plan on replacing these any time soon. When I do, it will be with the same thing.

Great fit for my pack

Granite Gear Round Rock Solid Compression Sack

Granite Gear Round Rock Solid Compression Sack

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2009

I have had one of these Granite Gear compression sacks ever since my first backpacking trip a little over a decade ago. It has held up well, showing virtually no signs of wear, albeit the only time that it's not inside my pack is at night. I have had multiple bags throughout the years and all types and different sizes compress very niceey into about the side of a basektball.

I'd highly recommend this for any backpacking or even just weekend camping. It's a great way to save space at the cost of only a few ounces of extra weight.

Good Pack, Very Versatile

The North Face Recon Backpack - 2015cu in

The North Face Recon Backpack - 2015cu in

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2009

I bought this pack when I began taking the commuter train to this past summer. I have also used it cycling and plan to use it as a day pack for hiking. The mesh breathes very well in the summer heat, and I didn't get too warm with it on while cycling. There is plenty of space for additional books or binders with a laptop in the bag. The inside organizer is great and I love the outer mesh pocket as it can expand to hold very large and bulky items such as a bicycle helmet, clothes, etc. I was worried about the mesh breaking apart, but it has held up very well. I use the water bottle pockets for my gloves and hat in the winter. I just found out that the laptop pocket also functions as a pocket for a water bladder, with a hole for the tube coming through the top of the pack, this is a great feature. This pack is great to ride on a bike with, the breast clip and waist belt keep it from sliding.

My only complaints with this pack are that the reflective foam on the back of it is very delicate and scratches and cracks easily. Secondly, there is no where to tuck away the waist strap when you aren't using it, I just buckle it and do my best to wrap the loose ends around something. When the belt is being used, the loose ends are so long that they dangle. This is especially a problem on a bicycle.

Patagonia Capilene 3 Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I bought these with a Capilene 3 shirt, wore it sitting still in 20 degree weather for 4 hours and did not get cold. Also, the price is great. I couldn't find my size anywhere locally and purchased Under Armor that was $50 for the pants only. As soon as I found my size I returned the Under Armor for these which were cheaper and haven't looked back. I'm 6'1" 200lbs and the medium are a perfect fit. These also saved me some money on ski pants as I don't need ones that are insulated.

The North Face Odyssey Soft Shell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Odyssey Soft Shell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2009

I wore this today to the Winter Classic. I had on a Patagonia Capilene 3 base layer, a light TNF fleece and this on top and was very toasty throughout the entire game. It was 25-30 degrees with wind was constantly blowing, I wasn't cold at all. It has plenty of pockets, the goggle pocket worked perfectly for my gloves while I was using hand warmers, and actually warmed up my gloves very well. The chest pockets are great for a cell phone and wallet. I feel like I could have gotten away without the fleece today.

December 31, 2008

I am 6'1" about 200lbs and normally wear 34" jeans. I tried on the medium long and the length was good, the waist was a little tight. The large were very baggy and were loose in the waste with the waste band cinched as tight as it will go. I went with the medium.
