Incredible Softshell

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Hooded Jacket - Men's

Had it for a few weeks now and I can't get over how well this thing works all around. I needed a soft jacket that could handle some decently harsh weather when used as a shell (ie with insulation when it gets cold enough) and this performs flawlessly. The powershield material is amazingly abrasion resistant and for all that i can tell is practically water proof(held under a faucet for ten seconds and is practically DRY! when removed). I took this backpacking in late Dec and hiked a total of about 7 miles over mountainous terrain wearing the Gamma SV the entire time. This jacket excels when used by itself during aerobic activity. The material stretches beautifully to allow for free upper body movement while providing great cushion for hauling a pack up a mountain. Needless to say it breathes fairly well and is probably the better choice over say the venta sv (less cushioned and has pit zips) for backpacking purposes. Also, I stood in the middle of a saturated cloud for many hours in the dark cold night (about 35F) wearing layers of course with a constant heavy mist blowing and intermittent annoying heavy drops of rain and remained well protected thanks to the shell-like properties of polartec powershield. The hood is large but customizable. The fleece liner is just warm enough for 45F weather wearing the jacket by itself with maybe one layer underneath and not too warm so that you don't have to take it off inside(minimize risk of losing it). Granted, I am 6'4 and 180lbs. The large fits very well. Sleeves are great and chest etc is big enough for layers. Not incredibly long ie not really a ski jacket, but certainly long enough for all other applications. The chest pockets are large and not too high so that you can still use them easily as normal hand pockets when your hands get cold. I wear it every day and i'm wearing right now. Feels great! Looks great! Love it.
