Mountain Hardwear Chillwave Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2012

MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR CHILLWAVE STILL RULES!
For Winter cold weather with biting wind chills, I find the Mt. Hardwear Chillwave Parka is the best parka available. No, I don't work for Mountain Hardwear. I simply hate cold weather and icy wind chills.
1) I bought two Mt. Hardwear Chillwave Down Parkas in 2011 and 2012!
2) With 12 ounces of 650 down fill, this parka keeps me very warm in freezing weather - wind chills below zero.
3) The "Chillwave" is light, comfortable and durable and is highly water resistant.
4) If you value your warmth, in freezing temperatures, this is the down parka to buy!

Hi Max: I own several down jackets with a Polyester Shell.
The Answer is that this type of shell does a "fair job" of blocking the wind. If you want a jacket that truly does a better job of blocking the wind, take a look at the Mountain Hardwear "Hunker Down Jacket." Hope this helps.

Hope this helps! The Mountain Hardwear Chillwave Parka is NOT designed for constant exposure to the rain, meaning standing in icy rain for hours. It is water resistant with a DWR (Durable Water Repellant) coating. This helps.
However, I suggest a Gore-Tex outer shell on any parka in which you will be dealing with consistent icy rain!

The Mt. Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket is similar to the North Face Denali Jacket. Please be aware that neither of these "jackets" are meant for really cold winter days. They are the equivalent of
warm sweaters - meant for after ski wear - or for a warm day in winter - around 40 degrees Farenheit, to take the chill out. For colder days, it would be wise to invest in a good down jacket or parka - either from Mt. Hardwear or some other equally reputable manufacturer. Hope this helps.

Mountain Hardwear Chillwave Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 31, 2011

UPDATE! THE MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR CHILLWAVE PARKA IS WATER RESISTANT!!
The Mountain Hardwear Chillwave Parka is water resistant!
Mountain Hardwear, the Manufacturer has validated that this 2011 Chillwave Parka is Water Resistant. It has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) Coating which will prevent water or snow from penetrating the parka. Great News!
I CAN NOW RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE PURCHASE THIS PARKA!
REASONS ARE:
1) Lots of Down - Has more than 12 ounces of down fill.
2) Baffled Construction - No sewn through seams.
3) New Technology to prevent wind gusts from penetrating.
4) Great Hood- Face Protective.
5) Water Resistant - DWR Finish - as already stated.

WARMEST NEW PARKA FROM MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR FOR 2011

Mountain Hardwear Chillwave Down Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Chillwave Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 20, 2011

The Chillwave Down Parka by Mountain Hardwear is the company's 2011 update of the hugely successful Mt. Hardwear Subzero SL parka - no longer available. This parka promises to be equally as warm as the Subzero SL parka plus it offers a layer of material that blocks the wind! This promises to eliminate the nasty effects of high wind gusts and high wind chills. When we combine this fact with the substantial down fill in this parka, and its baffled construction, it should keep anyone warm down to minus 30 wind chills. This Great Parka also has a DWR (Durable Water Repellant) covered outershell - so rain and snow will not penetrate this parka! The Chillwave is a Great Parka
for everyone who wants to be warm in icy winter temperatures, and wind chills down to -30 degrees Farenheit. After much research, I conclude that this is the Number One Parka for 2011!! It will keep you toasty warm, on the worst days of winter! It is virtually the same parka as the parka it replaced - the Mt. Hardwear Subzero SL Parka.
Go for it! Buy one! I plan to buy two of these Chillwaves!

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2011

TOP QUALITY, GREAT WARMTH
The Mountain Hardwear Subzero SL Jacket is extremely warm, wind resistant. and nearly waterproof - due to the Conduit SL Laminate Shell. This is the "current best bet" for any of you Gear Heads, who were thinking of buying the Moutain Hardwear Subzero SL PARKA.
Mt. Hardwear after years of great sales of the Mt. Hardwear Subzero SL Parka - has discontinued it - because they think they can even improve upon - they have told me in phone calls. HIGHER QUALITY/WARMER THAN MOST OTHER PARKAS!

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 11, 2010

HIGHER QUALITY/FAR WARMER THAN MOST OTHER PARKAS!
Alert to Fellow Geaheads:
The Mountain Hardwear Subzero SL Parka will serve you better than any parka that I have tested from Land's End, Eddie Bauer, LL Bean or any of the "commercially advertised brands." With winter a week or two away - the following info. is important as to why this is a great parka, and a better choice than others:
BOTTOM LINE REASONS:
1) Baffled Construction - This prevents the cold spots and loss of body heat that lesser garments with sewn through seams unfortunately allow! The Subzero SL protects you from cold spots and loss of body heat - very important!
2) It is highly wind resistant - due to its Conduit SL Laminate Shell. Thus, you will be protected from biting winter winds!
3) It is nearly waterproof - due to its Conduit Laminate Shell.
4) It has 15 ounces of Down Fill - a significant amount of down, which will keep you warm!
5) It has an Awesome Down Filled Hood - that is also Face Protective. Since 65% of our body heat is lost through one's head- a great hood is imperative! The Subzero SL Parka delivers here also.
TRUST ME! THIS IS A PARKA THAT PERFORMS!!

The North Face Vostok Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 26, 2010

1)The North Face Vostok is an extreme parka - for extremely cold conditions.
2) Alert: It is very heavy in weight! At 54.3 ounces you really feel the weight of this North Face Parka. For most gearheads, this parka is simply a bit too heavy!!!
3) On the plus side, it is durable and will last.

BOTTOM LINE - OTHER LIGHTER PARKAS = MORE COMFORT!
1) TNF Vostok is an awesome parka!
2) But comfort is an important need for most of us!
3) For greater comfort than this parka, meaning lighter weight and ease of mobility, there are other down parkas that will provide equivalent warmth to the Vostok, and still provide far greater comfort in terms of lighter weight and greater mobility - in extreme cold!
3) The Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Parka succeeds in providing warmth for Extreme Cold, and is far lighter and more comfortable than the Vostok.
FOR MOUNTAIN CLIMBING, AND EXTREME COLD, THE MT. HARDWEAR ABSOLUTE ZERO IS THE PARKA OF CHOICE!

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Parka - Men's

October 13, 2010

Hello Zuzana,

I have checked the specifications on this Mt. Hardwear Subzero Down Parka. The back lenth is roughly 32 inches. To put this into context, most down jackets are only 29 inches long. So, this extra three (3) inches is signiificant. It should reach to the middle or below the derriere of any man who is under six feet tall. Also, this garment is a parka, and all parkas tend to be a bit longer than down jackets. I believe this parka will be adequate in length most men - and would come close to "covering a man's butt." I hope this helps you.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

October 12, 2010

HI Keith,
I own several Mt. Hardwear Subzero SL Parkas (not Jacket). I think during the really seriously cold days of winter, with high wind chills that you would benefit from the extra length that the Mt. Hardwear Subzero Sl PARKA offers rather than the jacket. While I like the greater movement a jacket sometimes affords, I have learned that for greater warmth, the length of a Parka equals greater warmth. On very cold days, I find the Subzero SL Parka is warmer than the equivalent jacket.

GREAT FOR AVERAGE/COLD WINTER DAYS

The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 7, 2010

JUST BOUGHT A NEW NORTH FACE NUPTSE JACKET!
For Average/Cold Winter Days this parka really keeps u warm!
Strong Points are the following:
1) Has 700 down fill and high loft.
2) Has lots of down fill in ounces - a good guess is about 12 oz.
3) Extraordinarily light and comfortable.
4) Good workmanship.
5) Better quality than Lands End Parkas, better quality than the equivalent Mt. Hardwear Jacket. I tried them on side by side.
This jacket is not for Mountain Climbing. But is is a very warm jacket for 20 degree weather and above.

Answer for joh3343548:
Hi there! I own the Mt. Hardwear Subzero SL Parka, and have seen the Mt. Hardwear Subzero Jacket. Here are your answers:
1) The material(s) on both are the same!
2) The Parka is simply warmer - since it is longer and covers more or your body.
(Obviously in very cold/frigid weather, if the areas below your waist is covered, as is the case with the parka, you will be warmer.
Conclusion:

THE DENALI - CONSIDER IT "AN ULTIMATE SWEATER"

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 30, 2009

The North Face Denali Fleece "Jacket" - in my view is not real outerwear. It is not intended to compete with DOWN PARKAS. What it is is a nice soft and warm fleece garment.
MY RECOMMENDATION:
1) Wear this Denali indoors - if the dead of winter when there is a bad chill in the house.
2) Wear this Denali after you have been skiing.
3) Don't expect this Fleece Garment to be a warm parka! It was never designed for this purpose.
BOTTOM LINE:
CONSIDER THE DENALI A WONDERFULLY WARM SWEATER OR SWEATER LIKE GARMENT!
This way you will appreciate the Denali, rather than having to criticize it - as though it were a Parka - which it is not!

1) IT FEELS VERY HEAVY - FAR FAR TOO HEAVY AND VERY UNCOMFORTABLE.
2) HOOD LOOKS NICE - BUT IS NOT FACE PROTECTIVE.
3) THIS IS A PARKA THAT LOOKS WARM, BUT IS NOT IN THE SAME CALIBRE AS MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR PARKAS WHICH ARE LIGHTER, WARMER AND MORE COMFORTABLE PARKAS!
4) MY ADVICE- DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PARKA!
IT IS NOT WORTH BUYING!

THE SEIRUS BALACLAVA
WILL KEEP YOUR FACE AND HEAD WARM WHEN THE WINDS ARE BLOWING VERY HARD - 30 - 30 MILES PER HOUR. WITHOUT IT, YOUR FACE WILL CHILL UP. IT IS WORTH BUYING. YOUR FACE NEEDS TO BE KEPT WARM - OBVIOUSLY!
