Good features, durability issue

Columbia Bugababy Interchange Bunting - Infant Girls'

Rating for this product: 3 February 2, 2011

I bought the 24m suit for our 18m monster. She's above average in height for her age, so we're always buying regular clothes at least one size up. In this case, we probably could have stuck with the 18m suit as the one we bought is kinda big for her. She's now logged about 6 hours of snow time in it and we're pretty happy with the features. The fold-over hand flaps are great as mittens don't last past the door. She's perfectly warm in 30 degree weather and stays dry as she runs, dances and inevitably falls in the snow. My only complaint is that the stitching around one of the foot flaps started to come out on the second day. The thread is pretty thin and the spacing is a bit on the low quality sideWe're only going to get one season - about 10 days max here in Northern Virginia - of use out of it so it doesn't really make sense to send it in for a warranty replacement. To have a durability problem so soon after buying it is pretty disappointing.

The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 24, 2011

I bough this jacket in '09 because it was one of the cheaper softshells on the market. It's served me well. I've worn it through countless miles of the Appalachian Trail and many nights snowboarding our icy little East Coast hills we call slopes. It's been on Rainier twice - once to the summit in July and once to Muir in December. On the December trip I was only wearing this jacket and a wool base layer and was pleasantly warm despite the rather nasty wind. I also wear it cycling to work and back during our Norther Virginia Winters, which typically settle around 20-30 degrees.

On the negative side, this jacket is kinda heavy compared to some of its more technical competitors. It's also not intrinsically warm - it's great at blocking the wind but once you stop moving you're going to feel the cold creep in. Lastly, and perhaps my biggest gripe, is that it really doesn't do a good job wicking away perspiration. I think TNF recommends "mild aerobic activity" and they're not kidding. It's simply not suitable for running as it'll just get soaked and stinky.

I think the bottom line is that this jacket is more fashion over function.

The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 24, 2011

I'm 6'4" 235lbs and have the XL. I'm pretty fit but not bulky by any stretch of the word. The length of the XL is spot on but the waist/stomach area is unnecessarily large - as if it was cut for someone with a beer belly. At 210 your husband needs to eat more. Anyways, I'd be worried that the arms wouldn't be long enough with just a Large.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

May 10, 2009

Update: I've put 20 miles on them now and they're starting to fit and feel good. After wearing them a few hours in the house for a few days, I took them out for a 6 mile hike. Bad idea - huge blisters that had me walking funny for a week. Once the bleeding stopped I went with short 2 and 3 mile hikes and my efforts are paying off.

They've definitely widened and I can wiggle the toes of both feet. Another 20-30 miles and I think I won't even notice I'm wearing them.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

April 23, 2009

I just bought these boots from here in size 47. The left boot feels good but the right is a little tight widthwise, as my right foot is slightly larger. Will these stretch a bit as I break them in? I know leather typically shrinks over time, so I'm really not sure what to expect here. There just aren't many options for those of us with large, wide feet and if these could give a little I think they'd fit great.

Also, does anyone know if a boot stretcher and that spray would be worth the effort and expense?

Black Diamond Covert Winter Pack - 1343-1953cu in

February 25, 2009

okay, see the loops on the bottom? you drop your axe through (upright), then flip it over so it's upside-down and cinch the elastic toggle around the shaft. should be pretty secure, though a cover for the bottom spur is a smart idea----------------------------I added a photo below of what I've been trying. I don't think I understand your method - is it just the tension of the elastic that holds it in place? - cm-----------------------------That's it. It's the tension of the elastic that holds it close to the pack, but the strap holds it up. It'll seem much more solid when the pack's got some stuff in it.------------------------------------------Ah cool, thanks. I think what confused me was that my axe is 80cm (I'm somewhat tall), and using the above method there's not enough length in the elastic to loop over the shaft. I have to thread the axe through the elastic loop first, then create the hitch. - cm

Black Diamond Covert Winter Pack - 1343-1953cu in

Can someone please explain the intended way to carry an ice axe with this pack? Do I just girth hitch the head with the bottom loop? The instructions were a bit lacking to say the least.

Petzl Mini Prusik Minding Pulley -2009

February 2, 2009

I'm heading to WA for crevasse rescue school this Summer and need a pulley. I don't fully understand the concept of "prusik minding," but it seems that the pulleys with this feature all have rectangular plates. Does that make this a better choice than the Petzl Rescue Pulley for crevasse rescue?
