Volkl Kuro Alpine Ski

April 6, 2010

Has anyone else had problems with the big metal piece under the tip peeling up where the edge stops? Both my tips are doing it. Also, anyone know if they changed that part of the ski next year? Thanks

I would imagine the skis pretty similar on a deep day. The kuro has a little bit more of a regular shape (not quite as extreme of a powder pintail) and is a little stiffer, so it is probably a little more stable on harder snow. In deep snow the kuro is probably a little more aggressive, where the pontoon is probably more playful.

I'd move them up. I like mine at the traditional, but like them even more at +2. I don't think i would like them any farther back than traditional...too much tip

Best ski ever

Volkl Kuro Alpine Ski

Volkl Kuro Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2010

This is my second season with this ski, and I couldn't be happier with it. Obviously in powder it can't be beat, massive float, massive stability, massive speed, massive everything. I love that I can ski powder with an aggressive, forward stance and not worry about going over the front. But come on, look at the ski, its no surprise that it crushes the deep stuff, the surprise is how it handles on other areas of the mountain. Way more than "does well enough on the cat tracks to get back to the lift".

I ski the 195 and I remounted it at +2 cm after about a month of traditional mount. Loved it traditional, really love it at +2. Mounting the ski forward really changed how it handles in crud, bumpy stuff or other less than ideal snow conditions. It made it much more maneuverable and fun to throw around for quick snappy turns. Also, skiing switch is easier, if you're into that. So call me crazy, but I now ski this as an all mountain ski, even ripping groomers. Although, with the reverse camber, they don't track very well if not on edge, so keep em turning and you'll be loving the big huge tracks they can lay down. Just try'em, ski them forward and aggressively, and I will bet you'll be amazed too.

One more thing, after a few weeks of skiing last year's models, the topsheet started flaking off in big chunks. They seemed to have fixed that this year, so they stay shiny and pretty for all the gapers out there to stare at.

great gloves

DAKINE Apollo Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2010

I got these gloves last year, love 'em. I ski as much as I can in Utah, and I have not had a day yet where they were not warm enough. The leather seems very durable as well, lots of carrying skis, unbuckling boots, etc... and no cuts yet. One of the little straps that you can put on your jacket did pull out, but I never use them so it wasn't a big problem. Always love a nice soft nose wipe on the lift as well.

Volkl Kuro Alpine Ski

February 2, 2010

Lars, Ive been on the kuros for almost two years now, 185 last year and 195 this year. I was also amazed at well it skis all over, and I use it everyday now. I would say go for it, its stiff compared to other rockered skis, although I'm sure it is softer than the gotama, (never tried that one) and I think that that is why it does well on groomers. I use to think it wasn't good in bumps, but just today I was some pretty big bumps and had a blast. I really can't say enough good things about these boards. Get em and prepare for the comments on the chairlift.

The regular mount point seems pretty far back, and with the narrow tails, skiing switch in powder can be tricky with these. I would say go plus 2 or just get the chopsticks.

Volkl Kuro Alpine Ski

January 16, 2010

I just switched to the 195 and have been loving it. It is a very aggresive ski, but with the rocker it is not at all hard to make smaller, tighter turns when needed. It seems to me that the 195 is a little better on the hardpack as well, not that it really matters with this ski. If you have been enjoying the 194 gotama, you should probably go with the 195. It just
demands to skied very forward, or it will throw you around.

The sidewall is improved this year. Last year's had an annoying habit of fracturing and falling apart like superman's ice cave. Get the new one, it's worth it.

THE boot

Lange Banshee Pro Ski Boot - Men's

Lange Banshee Pro Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2009

I can't find any fault at all with this boot after half a season of heavy use. All the add-ons (vibram, toe box, gel pad) seem to really make a difference. No shin bang or mashed toes for me. The semi-booster strap is great, you can really crank them down with it. Once you get these dialed in the power and response is amazing. These boots love to charge hard on any surface. Don't be fooled if they seem flexy when they are warm, once the shell gets cold it stiffens up . I did get a surefoot footbed, but that's it. I love the lange liner, after maybe 10 days it felt great with no pressure points anywhere. I ended up going a whole size down from what I usually wear, so keep that in mind when ordering. Awesome big mountain boot.

Exactly what Erik said. The Vibram soles make more of a difference than I thought they did. Great for hiking.
