Dry Creek, SLC, Utah

Santa Cruz Heckler Mountain Bike - X9 AM Build Kit

April 27, 2009

This bike has been tested in Mueller Canyon and Dry Creek over its first week in my hands outside of SLC. Have to say, it does climb really well and chews up rocks, stumps, mud, roots and anything else you throw in front of it and spits them out with 5.5 in and 6 in on the rear shock for a nice freeride bike. I have it mounted with Crank Bros 5050 XX Pedal and it makes for a bomber freeride setup. Probably not the lightest bike out there, but it still does well for XC use and bombing the downhill sections of a long ride. Well worth the coin! Pick yours up when this comes back into stock...

Durable, reliable tubes

Cutter Premium MTB Tubes - 4 Pack

Cutter Premium MTB Tubes - 4 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 November 19, 2009

Well, what can I say, these are basic tubes and they get the trick done. The four pack makes them a bit more economical for your money and are comparable to other more expensive tubes that perform exactly the same. They've been helpful during goathead season here in SLC where I got four flats in the same week. Try a set out, you can't go wrong.

Arc'teryx Spotter Long Short - Men's

Arc'teryx Spotter Long Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 9, 2009

I have seen the fit being poor in the other reviews but I personally really like these shorts. I am 34 waist, 165 pounds, 5'11" and they fit loosely but not baggy. I actually wish they were a bit longer and roomier but I was satisfied overall with how they fit. They are just below my knees by about 1-2 inches and are great for hiking/backpacking. The chamois lined waist is soft and the seams are burly as hell all over the shorts. Hopefully for this cost, they last quite a while.

Really effective product

Pedro's Oranj Peelz Degreaser

Pedro's Oranj Peelz Degreaser

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

This degreaser works as advertised. I cleaned my chain, derailleurs (front and back), and bottom bracket area and it literally looked new when I was done. I just picked up a cheap car detail brush and used that directly on the parts. After completely cleaning, I rinsed off with water, then applied fresh lubricant to the parts. A great product to use when your bike is coated in dirt/mud and you need to start fresh. Highly recommended to have this one in your kit.

Great venting, and nice coverage.

Fox Racing Flux Helmet

Fox Racing Flux Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

This helmet is a great design, for a couple of reasons. As others have noted, great venting that you can especially feel when rallying downhill. Also, I wanted a helmet that covers the back of my head better. A lot of helmets on the market don't offer a lot of coverage near the bottom of your skull, and this one fits the bill. The visor pops off easy, just be aware of that. Also, there is a ton of extra strap once I fit in the S/M size helmet. I just cut the extra strap off and seared the end with a lighter so it doesn't fray. My only concern is the retention system, which has kind of an asymmetrical fit to get it to fit my head right, meaning it has to be adjusted tighter on one side for it to fit right. I was right in between the two sizes, and went smaller and it fits snug but not too tight. Overall, I think the retention system will fit but I hope it is durable in the long run when I clobber my head on the ground someday. I would highly recommend this helmet to anyone looking for a highly breathable, rear coverage helmet.

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp - 2010

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp - 2010

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

Just go ahead and get this one already! Great brightness options, with the ability to save power on the dimmer settings. A great option if you don't need a ton of light and just enough to get by. You can go on a few treks and not even change batteries. I especially love the lightweight and simple design. Doesn't take very much space at all in the pack, plus has a blinking setting. Easy to use: One click for hyperlight, then three partial presses to adjust dimming. One more click, and you are on the three superlight LED setting, then another three partial presses to adjust the dimness and get it to the flashing setting. A great design, and a great value by BD. Has a multitude of uses, and will likely last at least seven years like my previous BD headlamp.

Great lightweight sock

Cutter MTB Sock - 3-Pack

Cutter MTB Sock - 3-Pack

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

This sock is a very breathable and lightweight sock for hiking and biking. I have used it biking on several days and it breathes well so your feet don't get wet with sweat. There is cushion in all strategic points, and mesh on the top where your feet can vent nicely. It feels similar to a dress sock material, not the cheap cotton socks that trap moisture in your feet. A great active sports sock! Pick up a three pack, you won't regret it. I have a size 10 foot, and the S/M is great. If you are 11+, I would get the L/XL.

Absolutely Impressed.

Sea To Summit Kitchen Sink

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

This product functions just as stated in the description. Just used it on a backpacking trip in the high Uintas. The photo is about all you need. Its main selling point is the steel ring in the rim of the sink. I've seen the Granite Gear sink in action, and it fails in that it spills out water when full. Not this one. Nice work STS, great design. As you can see, the sink remains rigid when full of water, and as the water level gets lower it still will retain its shape. Genius. 10 liters was enough to pump all water for three people to cook with, rinse dishes, drink with, and at the end of the night was enough to extinguish the fire with. I also like that you don't need to do dishes directly in the river/lake and can keep food scraps out of the natural environment. 10 L is perfect for a small group, 20 L would be overkill. Highly recommended; you should pick one up for the function versus weight in your pack. Very much worth the weight for convenience for pumping water, dishes, etc.

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

As others have said, I bought it for diggin' in the ole' food pouch, but will be taken on all treks for its lightweight and durable design. I don't own a Jetboil PCS, but it would be ideal particularly for the taller height of the Jetboil. For the negligible weight and nice price, I would consider adding this utensil in along with your titanium spork for the essentials on fast and light treks.

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

This is a great material for active sports. It stretches nicely, and is quite soft and comfortable on your skin. Used it as a baselayer on a recent backpacking trip and it functioned great. Thumbholes are a plus for adding other layers on top, although the material fits snugly at the wrists. Also, wicks moisture well when sweating. I would buy again in heartbeat. Great accessory for Gigapower

Snow Peak GigaPower Windscreen

Snow Peak GigaPower Windscreen

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

This windscreen does exactly what it is supposed to. Probably doesn't justify itself for those counting ounces, but I found it to be valuable at 10,000 feet in the Uinta mountains when cooking. It helped channel the flames to save on fuel consumption, and it fits snug inside of the Snow Peak cookset for stowing. FYI, it will become instantly discolored once you use it but it still functions fine. I agree with the previous reviewer also, Snow Peak should make two versions: one Piezo and one for the manual ignitions. It is a bit tricky to fit it on the first few times, but you can get it dialed by adjusting the arms on the stove. Overall, a nice accessory for saving fuel.

Functional masterpiece

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

I'm quite stoked about this piece of engineering the design team has come up with at BC. Nice work everyone. The fit is smaller just like most of backcountry.com's product line. So if you are layering with fleece/midlayers underneath, then I would size up. I am 5'10", 165 lbs, 34 waist, 41 chest and went with the XL because the large felt too tight, especially with a layer underneath. I also like a roomier fit for snowboarding and freedom of movement. If you are climbing in it, then maybe go with the smaller size so there isn't much extra material.

The material itself is impressive. For the cost, definitely a shell to consider up against Arc'teryx and the other high-end competitors. You are getting a great shell for half the cost of paying for the Arc'teryx name. Plus backcountry.com products are way more hip anyways. The jacket rolls into its hood nicely for compression on lightweight trips. Its ability to stretch with your movement is key. Water beads up nicely on it but I have yet to test it in full on downpour, although from previous reviewers minus the complaints it sounds like it will shed perfectly. As I found out this weekend backpacking, the material can withstand melting temps quite well. I bumped into my Snowpeak stove while cooking and it only left some minor "seared" markings on the arm. I was thrilled it was not melted through and annoyed with my own stupidity.

All in all, a great buy for me and I am excited to use it in the devastating Utah winter and also on the Appalachian trail this fall to see how the DWR issue pans out. You cannot go wrong with this one for the price.

Patagonia O Web Belt

Patagonia O Web Belt

Rating for this product: 4 September 8, 2009

This belt does take a little while to wear in to where it will lie flat, but I have no complaints on its function. The fabric seems to fray just a tad around where the buckle bites, but that is normal after use. Overall, the material seems super durable and will likely last a long time like many of my other Patagonia products. Very satisfied on my purchase and will recommend to friends looking for a functional, durable way to keep their pants up.

Crank Brothers 5050 XX Pedal

Rating for this product: 4 April 27, 2009

These pedals are pretty grippy and come with long pin replacements too. They actually do grip well, contrary to what Grant says, especially if you put the long pins in that they come with. Also, I bashed them on a few pedals over their first few rides and nothing but a few scratches, so they are super durable and the sealed bearings keep mud out. I think they are worth the money if you have the coin. Don't get the 5050X, this one is worth it if you are throwing down. KEEN Shellrock WP Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 23, 2009

This shoe is quite amazing out of the box. And very light too! You can barely tell they are on your feet. I wear a 10 in all shoes mostly and this one fits true to size, but does run just a tad on the smaller side like the others said. I ordered the 10 and it fits very nice. The toe box is roomy, yet offers great protection when you kick that hidden rock while hiking or scrambling. Speaking of scrambling, the grip on this shoe is substantial for those looking for a shoe to run around mesas in the desert or climb up sketch inclines while hiking. The shoe does fit very low on the ankle, so do not buy this shoe if you are looking for high ankle support. Overall, a great job on design for this shoe. I would highly recommend this shoe to others looking for a great waterproof hiking, running, or scrambling shoe.

Arc'teryx Naos 55 Backpack - 3230-3600cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

I just took this pack down to Coal Pit's Wash outside of Zion NP and was impressed with how tight the pack holds everything in a minimalist design that is very durable and light. The 420D fabric is super bombproof and didn't rip at all on the rocks, cacti, and trees it brushed up against on the trek. I found the bladder adapter to be quite simple and effective as well for easy access to a drink of water. Overall, a great design for those quick alpine ascents and two night desert trips. I would not recommend the Naos 55 for any trips over 2 nights if you are taking a sleeping pad, tent, sleeping bag and cooking gear as it is a bit small for anything over a short jaunt. I would recommend the Naos 70 for anything else over 2 nights if you have a ton of gear. My only problems with the pack was the waist belt rubbing on my hip a bit, which was annoying but could be something to do wtih adjustments to the pack perhaps. Also, the side gear straps could be made a bit larger for adjusting to larger diameter tents (when packed), but I managed to squeeze it in there. Overall, this would be a great pack in coastal rainy climates or a super durable pack or mountainous/desert climates as well.

Rating for this product: 5 March 20, 2009

This board truly UL-ultralight. Sick for use in the backcountry as it weighs nothing to carry up, and handles very solid in backcountry and resort conditions like a Cadillac. If you want an advanced freeride board with a freestyle feel to it, this is one of the lightest on the market. So far, so good. This bottle is perfect to make the transition from the # 7 Nalgene bottles that there was a scare about. Despite the product description, DO NOT boil water in this bottle as it explicitly states not to use it for hot beverages on the labels. Overall, very durable bottle and I have to ask, what metal does not sweat when you put cold beverages in it? I have not dropped off any buildings to test strength yet, but it seems really solid. If you want a nice alternative to poisonous plastics, this would be a great choice. One side note to backcountry: can this be made in a simple liter version? I have had a lot of people ask why there is not a liter version...
So it turns out the lid broke in two on my bottle. That sucks. But just contact backcountry and they will send you out a replacement lid ASAP if this happens. No worries.
