I use these shoes for more intense hikes where I know I'll be wading through mud, water and over rocks in the smokies. I usually wear size 12 shoes and from reviews that I got from the web, I sized up to 13 on this pair. Some times, I feel that this was a good idea (especially in the winter when I wear a lining with wool socks), and some times, when I wear thinner socks, I reevaluate my decision. Last weekend, I took a rather challenging hike where I was clambering over icy ricks and icy river beds, and they held up great. I slipped only when I made a really poor decision in placing my feet. They really keep the water from coming in. This is a very well engineered shoe. Probably since I got a size larger, it didn't take any time to break in. Over all, a great shoe for the price.
