The North Face Fargo Cargo Pant - Men's

December 22, 2011

Yes...but only if you use a thermal base layer underneath. I skied these today with a thin wool ski sock, and patagonia cap 1 on the bottom with the pat cap 2 men's brief underneath...the mid-mountain temp was 7 degrees F with windchill at -12 degrees F and I was toasty. Obviously, a thicker underlayer's going to add even more warmth, but I find the thin baselayer is great with these when my legs are active (i.e. skiing). I often wear these with only briefs underneath for moderate temps > 30 deg F for exercise like resort skiing.

K2 Clutch Helmet

March 28, 2011

This helmet is sleek and non-bulbous (lower-profile than average)...This helmet is what your looking for if you want something low key (L/XL) and asthetic. Two other suggestions are a POC racing helmet such as the Skull Light, or even the Smith variant. I don't own the Smith but I see it all over the tram every ride up so there must be something good about it...I do have and enjoy the clutch but now I wear POC receptor bug (my fav) exclusively when in the gnar and a chance of injury increases, plus although it's more bulky/bulbous POC seems to have the asthetics dialed too...

Patagonia Powder Bowl Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Powder Bowl Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 8, 2011

I own two of these (so I can wash one while I'm skiing) This is what the word bomber was meant to refer to (I realize that word is thrown around a lot by doofuses when it shouldn't be used) however this is solid gear. Great design holds accoutrements and beer in the pockets well and the vents are nice and large...cuffs function great with any kind of glove...warm, pretty comfy...this season is slightly improved over last season with new colors and a slightly better fit/cut (at least the two i have differ slightly 2010 v 2011). This is my go-to ski parka for cold weather. You may buy more than one as well (and I'm not even rich so it was a stretch)

POC Lobes Goggle

POC Lobes Goggle

Rating for this product: 3 January 8, 2011

These are great goggles for non-heavy snow days...not because of the lens' vision properties, but because the way it attaches. The four points of contact for the lens is intended to make it easy to interchange lenses when conditions change. However, in the BC when your life depends on your ability to see, you may want to consider the fact that after ice accumulated inside the lens, I tried to clean the inside with the cover but the lens continually popped out because it's not designed to be pressed on from the inside. I had to huddle down and put the goggles' lens inside my shirt for a bit before I could even bail. It did ruin my day. It really does have poor venting and the lens comes off too easily with routine handling. My model was 2009.
The positives are it works great when it's not pounding snow and fits my poc helmets perfect. I switched to the other cylindrical POC goggles and am happy.

UPDATE: I changed my mind, just bought another pair of lobes for blue sky days. Goggles are sick.

POC Receptor+ Helmet

POC Receptor+ Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 January 8, 2011

Just like the Bug, except slightly heavier due to the impact barrier...(can't notice the difference...I have both). Also, the sizing on this is "slightly" looser than the Receptor Bug, maybe to accommodate for other seasons? maybe an individual fluke on my particular piece?
I'd still buy it again...in fact did I mention I have two? Bought my daughter a POC poquito helmet after I wore this a few times. Done deal.

POC Receptor BUG Helmet

December 29, 2010

There is a whimpy accessory clip you can put on the back... The best goggle for this helmet will have silicone/rubber/something sticky on the inside of the headband/strap so it doesn't slide around.

Arc'teryx X350a Ice Climbing Harness

Arc'teryx X350a Ice Climbing Harness

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2009

i bought it more as a novelty and figured I'd still use my BD and Petzl harnesses for climbing...but I was wrong...this always gets packed into my gear bag when readying and i love it...you'll forget you have it on until you fall...

Hey Arc'teryx, make the gear loops more rigid (stick out) like BD's Chaos please. Only folly of the harness, but other benefits outweigh even when trying to clip/unclip a piece of gear from one of the loops. Even in OWs a flatter gear loop isn't a massive advantage...

Sterling PowerCord Cordelette - 6mm

June 14, 2009

I use this as my cordelette for canyoneering and trad climbs...EXCELLENT durability and strength...the only 2 things you give up with it is a little weight (it's lighter than a 6 or 7 mm of the same length of regular cord) and it's very low stretch (not dynamic) so don't expect it to absorb force if shock loaded. Once you figure that into your set up, then your ready. I have sat on mine dragging it across many sandstone canyons in Zion as i have squeezed through tight slot canyons and it BARELY retains a blemish. This is hardcore cord...no pun intended...
PS: Despite what Mr. Bohanon says below, it is not just a standard nylon cord, just read that product description above closely..."The 6mm PowerCord is stronger than standard nylon, breaking at a astronomical 4800lb." So it's as strong as a solid carabiner or any other part of the system (rope, harness, etc.) so unless your planning to hang your Mini Cooper from it, you have no worries. (but it still most likely would hold it)

Beal Edlinger 10.2mm Golden Dry Rope

April 14, 2009

PS. I FULLY agree with Matt's answer about the body harness...you can just add a chest harness to a regular seat harness, too. It will keep you upright at ALL times.
You can get that stuff here, but the rope may need to come from another place (i.e. Sterling)...(try googling "sterling shorts" if you want a cheaper shorter rope...)
Good luck, GO STATIC...

Beal Edlinger 10.2mm Golden Dry Rope

April 14, 2009

No rope is going to fail on you, but you must account for your weight, or if you slipped, and sharp edges on the rope, etc....
For rappelling ONLY, a static (non-dynamic rope is HIGHLY suggested)
I would suggest anything over >10 mm. And I would suggest a Sterling Rope if you want the best, but price may be a factor and Sterling isn't the cheapest (i.e. depends how much you plan to use it, but also remember you're hanging your life on it; used by rescue crews and awesome climbers around the world)

So for example, a Sterling HTP Polyester Static Rope (for rappelling ONLY; see sterlingrope.com for catalog), or for any chance of climbing a bit on belay or chance of a fall, I suggest Sterling Marathon Sport Rope - 10.4mm. I have this rope. (but remember that your 300 lbs will stretch a dynamic rope out like a rubber band and there is potential for the rope to go shooting out your rappel causing a catastrophe when you (or anyone) gets toward the lower portion of a rappel...

No climbing? STATIC ROPE ONLY PLEASE.
