KEEN Bern Baby Bern Boot - Women's

December 6, 2011

I've tried these boots on, but can't decide on if they are right for my needs. I live in Maine, and am looking for a casual yet cute boot for every-day winter wear (well, Spring & Fall too). I'm tired of wearing snow boots, with a pair of flats in my purse for when I reach my destination. My sole (ha!) concern with these boots is the traction. It looks REALLY slick. I've read conflicting reviews on whether this boot will be good (or terrible) in the snow. Keen reps, other people who have them... anyone have some real experience with this? I don't want to be slipping and sliding this winter...

Darn Tough Merino Wool Knee High Striped Light Sock - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 3, 2011

Great socks for mountain biking, or other activities (or wearing around town on colder days!). They do run a little big though- I wear a 7 shoe, and got the Mediums. They are about an inch too big, but with a bunch of time in the dryer, I'm hoping they shrink up to the right size.

Outdoor Research Rumor Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2011

Surprised by this piece... it's not your average fleece. It's more of a really light weight soft shell, with a micro fleece liner. Smooth on the outside, lightly fuzzy inside. Nice fitted hood, hidden pockets, longer-than-average sleeves with thumb loops.

Awesome light layer... running/biking when it's in the 40's... mid-layer it when it's in the 10's-20's... and throw it in the car for cool summer nights.

I'm impressed. OR is quickly becoming one of my top brand choices. Great quality.

Kaenon Klemm Sunglasses - Polarized

Kaenon Klemm Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 October 13, 2010

I was looking for a pair of glasses to do it all- biking, skiing, running, driving, every day use... something with technical features, but also something that looks good. These are those glasses. I love them, and have probably worn them every day since I got them about 1.5 years ago. I get lots of comments on them. They have some moldable feature in the frame, so they stay on your face during activities. The lenses show no wear, even though I rarely use the case and often leave them in backpacks or in purses.

Only problem I've had is that they do get emerged in salt water once in a while (oops), and I'm not good about wiping them clean after. Thus, the metal emblem has flaked a bit. I contacted Kaenon about this, and they offered replacements... but I don't want to be without the glasses for very long, so I haven't taken them up on the offer.

These glasses, as others have mentioned, for LARGER faced people.

In summary... highly recommended! Great shades, great company!

G3 Expedition Climbing Skin

October 8, 2010

There are several skins that come LONG, assuming you will cut them (that way they can just sell in widths, not lengths too). I had a pair of the Black Diamond skins (Ascension) which I cut to fit some 160 Rossis I had. Looks like BC.com has those in stock. The good thing about those is that you cut, then fold over. I knew I'd be getting longer skis eventually, so I left about 8 inches folded over, so I could make them longer for the next skis I had.

As far as width- there are a few trains of thought on this. Some people like a skinnier skin, and they cut it to expose the ski edge , and leave a strip of skin in the middle of the ski. Some people prefer "full-coverage", where you would get a fatter skin (as wide as the widest part of your ski), and then cut it to fit (http://www.backcountry.com/g3-trim-tool works wonders).

Everyone has an opinion on this- but basically, the more exposed ski you have, the more glide you'll have. The less exposed ski, the more grip.

Have fun!

Oakley Factory Fleece Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 February 19, 2010

I got the gray ones, and in general, I do like them. However, the waist band is really wide and stiff. The pink/blue "paint" is almost crusty, and limits the movement of the band. Other than this, the pants are great... really comfy, true to size, and cute. Not sure I'd wear them for yoga though- they are pretty warm. And I would not trust cash in the back pocket. In general, these are great for laying around the house... but I wouldn't go outside in them...

Great Dog Jacket!

Ruffwear Cloud Chaser Dog Softshell Jacket

Rating for this product: 5 February 18, 2010

If my dog understood performance outerwear, he would love this jacket. It's a slim fit, so he walks funny for a bit when it first goes on, but once we are outside, he forgets it's on. He likes to run through the woods, chasing scents & small critters, and this jacket has never snagged on a branch, and doesn't show any signs of wear at all! Also, in deep snow, it prevents "snowballs" from forming on his belly & upper leg fur. It keeps him really warm as well! It's really well made, with a soft fleece lining, a stretchy under panel, and a weather resistant top panel.I've read reviews of this jacket in which people complain about the zipper coming undone. The key is to flip back the zipper once its all the way zipped, as it has an auto locking mechanism built in.As far as sizing, my dog is skinny but long (60-lb lab/hound), so he fit in to a medium for the chest measurement but a large for length. I went for the medium, and it has worked out well (see picture).I've tried a few jackets on my dog, and this is my favorite. It doesn't restrict his movement, and it hold up well to (dog) abuse! I recommend it!

Patagonia R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2010

Got this hoody on Friday at lunch time. Wore it to the office for the afternoon, skiing Saturday, relaxing Sat night, skiing sunday, to a Superbowl party Sunday night, and running in 20 degree weather Monday night. Now I will wash it, as it's just beginning to smell. I got this hoody after reading all the great reviews, and am not disappointed. It has the regular R-1 waffle weave material everywhere except the bottom portion of the waist (the lower 4-5 inches is a thinner material, to fit under a harness, under ski pants, or whatever). There is a chest pocket (good for keys!). The zipper feels fine against my base layer, and the face part of the zipper has an extra layer under it, and is offset, so it doesn't bother my face at all.

I am a female, and am often between a small & medium in men's sizing. I got the medium to be on the safe side. It is a bit on the baggier side, but not enough that I would send it back. A small would have been a slim fit. I'm sure it will shrink a little from washing, like other reviewers have said.

In summery... this hoody is awesome. I think you should buy one!

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex Performance Shell Pant - Women's

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex Performance Shell Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 February 8, 2010

This is a review on the ebony pants. I don't know if the caviar/blue ones will have the same problem or not- perhaps it's a design flaw which they fixed with the newer model?

The pant itself is awesome. I'm 5'7'', average build, and the large fit well, if not a little big at the waist. The velcro tabs on the back cinched them tighter over just a light base layer. The material is not a typical soft shell- it feels more like a hard shell. But it seems to breath like a soft shell, and isn't loud. The zippers are great- welded with good pulls. Pink trim color is bright but not overly so. The pants are on the baggier side, but this didn't bother me.

I wore these pants on Saturday for the first time, for a resort day, and that night, when I took them off, I noticed that there were two holes. In the back (see "back pocket" picture above), the snaps which are just below the belt loop tore out of the pant, leaving holes in the material. Since I loved the pants otherwise, I decided to ski in them yesterday as well. The holes got bigger, which is too bad, since I was thinking of keeping them even with the holes. I can't figure out why the snaps tore through the material. They fit me well, and my jacket comes down my back way below the waist. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm reluctantly sending these back. I guess $100 gore-tex soft shells were too good to be true...

Thanks Andrea! I can see the zipper placement differences, but just don't get why the vast price difference, if they are essentially the same pant in craftsmanship/material. The pocket zippers don't really matter to me... the vent placement is the only one that may matter at all... so I think I'll go with ebony:-) I assume it's an older model of the same pant...

Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2010

Started tele-skiing last year, and even though I was told I needed knee pads, I didn't get them until about a month ago. I finally started wearing them after hitting my knees in the bumps a few weeks ago. Now I won't ski without. I DO however, wish that these came in at least 2 sizes... maybe a S/M and then a L/XL. As a women with smaller knees, I just feel like there is a bit too much material... Maybe it will form better to my knee with more use, but for now, it just sticks out a bit much on the sides, and is a bit too tall... Still the best out there, but I do think that they need more sizes.

Garmont Elektra Telemark Boot - Women's

January 19, 2010

I demoed this boot yesterday, and really liked it. I am used to a really flexible boot (older Gara), and so it took a lot of getting used to. I ended up skiing it in "walk" mode, as I couldn't even flex it in "ski" mode. This boot really improved my skiing, and supported me a lot more than my old one. I think I want to buy it... but am unsure as to how it will break in. Will it become more flexible the more I ski in it? Any advice is appreciated. I'll be doing mostly resort/patrolling in it, with the occasional backcountry trip. Thanks!

The jacket comes down to about mid-butt in the back. So it's a longer jacket (more coverage when playing in the snow). Since you're on the smaller side of the XS bracket of the sizing chart, it may be a little long on you. It's an awesome jacket, so I suggest giving it a try.

Cheap, but make sure the rack is right for you!

Yakima Boa Bike Mount

Yakima Boa Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 4 December 22, 2009

The main problem with this rack is that is is not very adjustable. If you have a smaller car, or one with minimally adjustable crossbars, then you may not be able to have the rear piece far enough back to carry a full sized bike. With a tray rack, your tire can be behind the back bar, as it will sit in the tray.

This is pretty much the same rack as the Copperhead, except with the 2-part tray. For only $39 more, I think the Copperhead is a better deal... unless you want to be able to take your rack off without taking the tray off! The tray racks seem more stable to me.

Mountain Hardwear Super Power Tight - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 17, 2009

I just got these, and am a little confused. The ones I got are solid black, not the black/gray of the photo shown. The ones I got look exactly like the men's version which are full price right now... the solid black, with reflectors on the back of the leg. Perhaps BC.com sent me the newer version of these pants (the tag has the correct name?). Regardless... I like them! The pants are a warmer weight, with a slight brushed fleece. The gussets are a similar material, but without the lining. The pants are not super thick, so I'd say they would be good for running in 20ish degree weather, anything colder and you may want another layer. I got my normal size, and they are a bit looser than expected... and LONGER! I am almost 5'8'', and have to roll them up a few inches... even with the leg stuffed in my shoe. For this price, I think they are a good deal for cold weather running/biking... but they are not perfect.

Rating for this product: 3 December 16, 2009

I really wanted to like this jacket. I usually wear a L, so that's what I ordered. It was way too big, allover. So I exchanged it for a medium. The medium fit better, but was too tight in the hips. So I went for a marmot softshell, which is a better fit. This jacket looks great, and the technical elements are great. Yakima 58 Inch Round Bar - 1 Pair

December 15, 2009

The recommended size for a Rav4 (06, base model, you'd want to check on your exact car on yakima.com) needs a 58" bar. However, this is really just a "minimum size". If you go with this, you probably won't be able to fit any attachments to the outer part of your bars. My car (Outback) also says to go with the 58", but I have 66" bars. They allow for me to mount bike trays on the outer part of the rack. On a taller car like yours, you probably don't have to worry about passengers running in to longer bars, so I'd say go longer... get out the tape measure and see how much overlap you'd have with different size bars, and figure out what you want to carry, and order accordingly!

November 25, 2009

The rack comes with all pieces except the Q-towers and the Q-clips (well and bars/locks/etc). The car-specific Q-clips will fit right in to the stretch kit pieces.. nothing additional is needed.

I had this on a Mazda3, and I believe the clips were flush with the car. They shouldn't be uneven or pulling, or it could damage your roof (and perhaps make the rack less stable). I once took detailed pictures of a rack I was concerned with the fit on, and emailed the pics to Yakima. A fit expert responded, and worked me through the problem. Great customer service. You could also go to your local rack store (REI/EMS/Rack N Road), and they could help you with fit.

Yakima SKS Lock Cores - 8 pack

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2009

Once you go to a Yakima rack, you won't go back. I've had the same core locks since I started racking my cars about 10 years ago. These cores have been in 3 different rack systems. Just keep the "blank" key, and it's a cinch to pull them out of one rack. I recommend getting a big pack of cores (at least 8) with the same key... as you'll be using these cores for the base rack, plus ski rack, bike racks, and more.

These locks are not super cheap, but are definitely worth the $- without them, someone could unclip your rack and walk away (in seconds) with hundreds of dollars of rack, plus whatever you are carrying!!

Yakima Crossbar Pads

Rating for this product: 5 November 23, 2009

These will fit great on Yakima or Thule bars, or even some "smaller" factory bars. I had them on my old Pathfinder bars, which were maybe 3" wide. The pads won't go all the way around wide bars, but you really only want to cover the top of the bar anyway, so you can just tie them on below, and they are fine. I use these pads, along with a set of tie-downs, to transport surfboards. Super cheap & easy way to move boards, boats, or anything else. Giving your rack the cushioning of these pads makes it much more universal, everyone should have at least one set!

Ruffwear Beacon Safety Light

Ruffwear Beacon Safety Light

Rating for this product: 4 November 20, 2009

Lights are a great idea for dogs at night. Period. Whether I'm walking/running with my dog, or just let him out in the yard, I put this on him. If he were ever to get loose, he practically becomes invisible at night, and could easily get hit.

This is a pretty good light- I've had it about 3 years, and it's still going strong. It has a few different settings (flash/strobe/solid) and is nice and bright. It stays clipped on to the collar (or jacket) very well. I've lost other lights b/c they fell off... but not this one. The light stays on so well, that if I try to pull it off in a hurry, it has actually come apart. The top to it will come off of the base. It easily clips back together, and still works fine, but because of this flaw I only give it 4 stars.

Ruffwear has an lifetime warranty- so if it does ever break/stop working, I'm sure you could send it back!! Awesome company!!

I haven't had any issues with this pack (unlike the user who posted a pic of the webbing tear). I've been using it for trail running and mountain biking with no problems. It is very versatile, as it is so compressible. Flaw is the really long dangling straps... They are about a foot too long (some are easily cut, others a bit harder due to the engineering of the pack). Nice pack though, I'm a fan!

Nice basic rack

Yakima Copperhead Bike Mount

Yakima Copperhead Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2009

This is a nice no-frills rack. It hold a bike securely. I've had a pair of them for about 5 years, and have used them regularly with no complaint. I did leave them on my car one winter (in the northeast), and they did rust shut. I had to use pliers & WD40 to get the skewer out... but even after that endeavor, it's serving me well! Works great for a mountain bike, but my road bike tires are small and it doesn't clamp all the way down on them. I use an old rag/sock stuffed in the tray to make it work. Not sure if other bike carrying options have the same problem, but I like to have the tire clamped securely. Not a perfect rack, but for the money, it's a good option.

This rack will only fit on round & square cross bars (Yakima or Thule). As Laura mentioned, they do make many racks which will attach to factory crossbars... but keep in mind that factory cross bars are not designed to hold much weight.

Awesome Rack!

Yakima LowRider - Set of 4

Yakima LowRider - Set of 4

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2009

I put Yakima racks on every car I have, and I have to say, this LowRider system is my favorite thus far! I've had Q-Towers and the track rack, and both require fit kits. The Lowrider system, once put together, can literally be installed in minutes. You don't even have to measure the distance between the bars! Simply stick the bars in the towers, put the towers on your rack, and tighten! By screwing in the side pieces, you tighten the bars to the towers to the car. It's that easy! This rack fits on most cars/suvs/trucks that already have side rails. They won't fit a car with huge rails like an XTerra though. Go to Yakima's website to see what will fit your car. The "Railgrab" is the new version of the LowRider. I like the Lowrider better, so recommend getting it before it's phased out!

Yakima LowRider - Set of 4

November 18, 2009

They should. They fit on my 05 Outback and my friend's 00 Outback. As long as you have the side rails, these low rider towers should clamp right on. Go to Yakima's website for a fit guide. The rail grabber is the newer option.

Great pants!

prAna Bliss Capri - Women's

prAna Bliss Capri - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2009

These pants are very soft and stretchy, and awesome for yoga, climbing, walking, and casual wear. I would say they run a big large though- I got my normal size, and have to cinch the waist a lot. If you want a tighter fit, I'd size down. If you want a baggier fit, go with your normal size.

Marmot Kitzbuhel Insulated Vest - Women's

Marmot Kitzbuhel Insulated Vest - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

I love this vest! It is warm and looks great! I get tons of compliments on it! It has a quilted outer layer, and then it has arm gussets to keep the chill out. Waist drawcord in front pockets is a great feature. I wear this ALL the time- under a ski jacket, over a light layer in the spring/fall... it is super versatile and very practical... highly recommended!

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

These are my first set of trail runners, and I will be back for more once I wear them out. I got them primarily for winter running in Maine- I wanted something with more traction on ice, and something that would keep my feet dry when running through slush. These work PERFECTLY for that! They are really stable and flexible, and they do not let water in! I have also done trail running and light hiking in these, and they have worked excellently for those activities as well. In fact, I hiked in them for a few months when I was "in between" hiking boots, and they worked great. These are very comfortable, very durable, and run true to size- I highly recommend them!

The North Face Mossbud 1/4 Zip Fleece Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

Great fleece. I forgot my ski jacket once last winter, and ended up wearing this instead... and I was actually warm enough! It's really soft, fuzzy, and people may even want to pet you. I found that it runs true to size. I got my normal size, and it fits perfectly...

Carve Designs High Point Skirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

My favorite skirt. I think I wore it every day last summer. Over a bathing suit to the beach as a skirt or dress, with a cute tank to go out to happy hour, around the house... it is incredibly versatile. It also doesn't wrinkle and doesn't need to be washed often- which makes it an awesome travel piece. Highly recommended!

This is a great spring/fall fleece, or an excellent jacket alternative for a warm ski day. The windstopper fabric is great- it really does take away the windchill factor, and keeps me really warm. Great fit- true to size.

Fast Ski

K2 T Nine Burnin Luv Ski w/ Marker ERS 11.0 TC Binding - Women's

K2 T Nine Burnin Luv Ski w/ Marker ERS 11.0 TC Binding - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 5, 2009

I have the 08 model of this ski, and for Maine snow (aka ice), it was my go-to alpine ski last season. Excellent carver, and really fast, & stable. Due to the narrow waist, I didn't enjoy taking this ski off trail, but then again, that is not what it is made for. I would definitely recommend this ski for an intermediate/advanced skier who normally skis groomed runs in the East. Out West, I'd go with something a little fatter.

Better than Patagonia

Marmot Uinta Down Jacket - Women's

Marmot Uinta Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2009

I live in Maine, and need a good down jacket for those brutally cold days. I got the Patagonia down jacket, assuming I would love it. I didn't. It was too short, and I felt like a marshmallow. So I sold it on eBay, and got this jacket, as I love all other Marmot jackets I own (I have 5-6 of them). This jacket is so much better. It's just as warm, and the FIT is SO much better! It is LONG enough in back so that the wind doesn't come up! It is a puffy jacket (it's a high-fill down jacket so this is a given), but I do not feel ridiculous wearing it. I have the rainwater color, which is bright, but not overly so. It is a great color. The only thing I'm not 100% fond of are the wrist cuffs. They are a little big and lack any nice detail (no velcro or liner or anything)... but this is not a deal breaker... just a minor complaint. Otherwise, love the jacket!

Nice pant!

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Women's

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 3, 2009

I was a bit hesitant to buy these as Stoic is a new brand, but I am glad I did! They are very well made, and fit very well. I will use these for backcountry touring, I wanted something lighter & more breathable than the shell ski pants I already have. I got my normal size, and they fit well. They are a bit slimmer than other pants I have/have tried on, but I don't mind. They fit fine over my tele boots. They do zip up the leg a bit, but don't have any type of liner inside to keep snow out so this may be an issue in deep power. They have a heavy reinforcement patch on the lower inner leg, which is pretty tough material. If you scratch it with your nail it makes a really loud sound (think chalkboard). All in all, I am happy with these, and can't wait to be able to use them! (P.S. "Not black" is a really dark gray, almost black.)*Update... changing from 5 to 4 stars. I've now used these several days. The fit is not as great as I initially thought. They do have a gap in the back, and I've gotten a back side full of snow a few times because of this. Still like the pants, they are very breathable (great for skinning) but the fit makes me think about swapping them out for something else...

Ruffwear Flat Out Dog Leash

Ruffwear Flat Out Dog Leash

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2009

Perfect leash. It is adjustable, so I use it for running. The clip makes this so easy, as I adjust the loop to fit my waist, then just clip it together, and we're off for a run! When we're done running, I un-clip it and use it as a normal leash! And I can clip my dog outside the coffee shop without taking the leash off of him! I've had mine for about 3 years, and have used it daily. Highly recommended!

Great Dog Harness

Ruffwear Web Master Dog Harness

Ruffwear Web Master Dog Harness

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2009

I have a skinny 60lb lab/hound who LOVES to hike. I got this harness for him (size Medium and he uses it on the tightest settings) recently, and am so glad I did. He's a great hiker, but occasionally is intimidated by steep rocky slopes, or icy spots. When this happens, I just clip a leash to this harness, and pull him right up. Usually he can get his legs in position to help out my efforts, but sometimes I do end up actually pulling him straight up, and the harness works just fine for that. I wouldn't "rappel" him (too risky), but I believe that Ruffwear has recently released a new product that is safe for dog-rappelling, so I would recommend that instead.

All in all, a great product. I get a ton of comments about the harness from other hikers, most of whom have probably bought their own by now!

Great Shell

Marmot Spire Jacket - Women's

Marmot Spire Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2009

Excellent technical shell. I've had mine about a month, and it has been excellent for the resort and backcountry skiing I've used it for. Plus the color (celestial blue) is awesome- very bright, which makes me easy to spot. I've received many compliments already. The jacket has a great feminine fit, and fits well over a fleece or softshell. My only complaint is that the powder skirt is a bit high, and doesn't really stop powder from coming up... so I just took it out. The hood, however, is perfect- fits over my helmet, and the neck comes up high to block wind. A great deal, especially if you can find it on SAC.

Marmot Radiant Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 January 9, 2009

Not a fan. When I first got it, I loved it. It's soft and fuzzy so how could you not love it? But then I started wearing it, and realized it is NOT warm or practical at all. It's actually pretty thin- you can actually see through it. I ended up sending it back... it may be a good fleece if you want to "look cute"... but I like jackets that keep me warm as well as look cute... I know, I'm so picky!

Nice jacket, weird fit.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Women's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2009

Nice softshell... but weird fit. Slender through the torso area, and LARGE through the shoulders and upper arms.

Despite the fit, I kept it, and though I don't wear it out on the town, I do wear it for winter running (as a top layer) or skiing in frigid conditions (as a mid layer).
