Patagonia Wanaka Down Jacket - Men's

January 20, 2012

That all depends on how long you are going to be outside. If you are walking from your car to the store, it will do fine with a shirt and sweater. But, if you intend on spending hours at a time in the outdoors, you really want to go with something more technical. As for sizing, if you're torse is 40 inches or less, go with a medium, otherwise a large. The jacket will only reach about mid-hips though. It is casual street wear!

Atomic Hawx 120 Elite Ski Boot - Men's

Atomic Hawx 120 Elite Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2011

This is one great boot (and I hate almost everything!). I have been through so many boots that I almost switched to snowboarding because of the fit. These are almost as comfortable as my AT boots, as stiff as you could possibly need on anything steep (I'm 200 lbs), the liner is top notch (no problem like the other guy, even though a standard Intuition liner would be cool), and the adjustability is also great. They transfer power great, the sole is replaceable, the cuff height ideal, etc. I could go on, but you get the point. After about 40 days in them, the only negative I have is that the 2nd and 3rd buckle smack each other a bit when you're hucking bigger drops or flexing hard. It has caused the paint to rob off on the 2nd buckle a bit. That is it!!!

Scarpa Maestrale Alpine Touring Boot

March 11, 2011

Don't put an AT setup on JJ's. You can't really skin well with skis that are as rockered as the JJ's. If you want an AT setup, I'd recommend something like next year's BD Zealot's which are gonna be kick-ass (I hear from people who already tried them). I absolutely love my JJ's but would never put AT's on them.

Arc'teryx Theta SV Bib - Men's

Arc'teryx Theta SV Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 19, 2011

In typical Arcteryx fashion, these are the best, bar none! I am a 32 waist and medium is perfect even with a base layer. As good as the Alpha SVs for climbing but better for skiing. Sheds snow and water like nothing else.
They are perfect, except..... the buckle on the belt SUCKS!!! It constantly comes undone. Lean lightly against ice, bend at the waist while skiing, etc. The slightest move will cause it to come undone. This is annoying and distracting, a serious redesign on the waist belt is in order!!!!

La Sportiva Trango Extreme Evo Light GTX - Men's

November 16, 2010

The Mammook's are terrible boots. I love Mammut but these are a lemon! They are too heavy for the warmth they provide (none!), cheaply made and worst of all: They don't have a good fit. I have Spantik's as well, so I assume our feet may fit similarly (narrow heel, medium-wide forefoot). I would look into the LaSportiva's or Aku's, both of which work great for Vertical Ice and moderate cold weather alpine climbing. I climb ice in Montana, so on really cold days I use my Spantik's and they are more nimble than you might think!

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's

March 29, 2010

I'm 5'11" and 192. The medium fits me well with base layer and puffy down sweater. Unless you need more insulation than that, you will be fine with a Medium. The Large (I tried it on) starts getting really baggy.

Kayland M11+ Mountaineering Boot - Men's

December 14, 2009

No. Kayland's are great. Look at the Kayland 6001, I love it and it should be good for that altitude as long as you aren't trying a winter approach or your feet run really cold. In that case, look at 8000 meter boots.

Primus Vacuum Bottle

Primus Vacuum Bottle

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2009

This is a 1 liter bottle (34 oz.) It comes with two stoppers, one is push to open valve, the other screw only, but helps retain heat. I have owned many thermos' bottles over the years, and the only one that I have found to be better, are the old Stanley ones (before they were made in China. Ice-climbing, 0 Degrees, 8 hours of hot coffee = PRICELESS!

Sorel Caribou Wool Boot - Men's

Sorel Caribou Wool Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 10, 2009

These boots are stylish, warm (although they DO NOT live up to their -40 rating, not even close), and easy to get into. Fit is good for wide feet, sloppy for people with narrow heels. The worst part is the loose inner boot. It is cumbersome to get out of the boot without removing the inner boot. If you can put up with that. Great. Oh, by the way: The wool ones are absolutely worth the extra cost. The fit and feel is much better, especially the heel. It is more snug than the polyester ones. The polyester ones would only get two stars.

CAMP USA Radion Ice Screw DO NOT USE

CAMP USA Radion Ice Screw DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2009

I own a half of dozen of these. I have to say they are fantastic. Much better than the BD's. Can't compare to the Petzl's though. Just today I placed them in ice when it was -27 degrees and all but one bit the ice like a shark. I love the independent hanger with the dogbone. Allows you to clip in when you are only half way screwed in. Adds a little extra sense of security. I haven't noticed any rust yet. I would say they are worth every penny. They should last many years, and can you really put a price on your life? If there is one drawback, it is the large handle. While it makes it super easy to place the screw, it requires a little work to clear the ice around the placement to not get caught up (especially in a concave area). Pro-lite gear has a video of them getting placed if you were wondering how they work.

Black Diamond Apex GTX Gaiter

December 2, 2009

I would say no. I can hardly manage to fit them over my ice climbing boots. I have the large and wear size 10.5 Millet Radikal boots. Unless you have a small foot and get the XL gaiters and can live with a very loose calf, I say look somewhere else.

Metolius Gripsaver Plus

Metolius Gripsaver Plus

Rating for this product: 3 November 27, 2009

It works alright for therapeutic purposes, unless you are very advanced, then I don't think the resistance is strong enough. It is not really a strength builder. There are much better devices for that. But $18.00 for something that may have a bucks worth of material? That is disappointing. I could live with the short durability if the replacement cost wasn't so sky high!

Mammut All-Year Pant - Men's

Mammut All-Year Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2009

I have multiple pairs of base layers. These are all around the best (lightweight) bottoms, in regards to functionality. If you want pure comfort, 100% Merino has the leg up. But since I, like most of you, am an active person, these are perfection. The three different materials provide exactly what is needed, where it is needed. And thanks to the sewn in Silver, you can take them off after a day of ice-climbing and not gag because of your stank!
They don't make them better than these!

Extrasport X-Treme Pant - Men's

There are only adjustable neoprene gaskets. They will allow water in if you go swimming, although not terribly much. I would consider them more to be semi-dry pants. Got mine of SAC for 60% less. I certainly wouldn't pay full price for these!

Deuter Speed Lite 30 Backpack - 1850cu in

Deuter Speed Lite 30 Backpack - 1850cu in

Rating for this product: 3 June 10, 2009

It is not a bad pack for the money and the weight. It isn't very comfortable due to its very lightweight internal frame which only consists of a couple aluminum rods. Shoulder straps are very comfortable though. Sweat buildup is not bad for a pack with pads instead of a mesh. Dividers inside are nicely arranged. The hydration pocket includes a Velcro strap, not a loop, making it ideal for platypus, a PITA though for Camelbak and others that need to be hooked.
The biggest issue is the size. I have a torso length of about 21 inches, average if you ask me for a male. This causes the waist belt to sit at my belly button. If that's your thing, you'll like this ultralight. Otherwise it'll drive you nuts, the way it did me. I am selling mine after using it once!

GOOD FOR WALKING, NOT HIKING

KEEN Targhee ll Mid Hiking Boot - Men's

KEEN Targhee ll Mid Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 19, 2008

These boots fit a little small, so get them a little bigger, maybe half or full size. Toe box is quite roomy for average size feet. Heel grip is pretty good, which is why I got them, I have a narrow heel.
Here are my gripes: The tying system automatically pulls up the toe box as you are walking, no matter how you tie them, severely decreasing toe space. Ankle hold is marginal at best and the tread is very slippery. They are surprisingly waterproof though.
That is why I recommend them for walking flat trails or everyday wear. If you are hiking uphill or anywhere where it is rocky or wet, try something else, maybe Scarpa, Meindl or Lowa.
