Caps off a winter look

Nixon Cap Jacket - Men's

Nixon Cap Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 22, 2012

Wool is always in style so you can bet the smooth Cap Jacket is bound to bring a winter look together. I picked up the gray because I wear a lot of black and it looks great with just about any color jean or pant. Warm, warm, warm ... but not as itchy as you'd think given the wool/poly blend. I tend to wear it with just a tee or light shirt, so I almost always pair it with a scarf, because the collar is pretty wide when zipped up and ... scarfs are a must for me in winter. When an old lady who has seen lots of men cross her path over the year tells you she 'loves that jacket' you know you look good. The younger ladies don't say anything ... they just do a double-take and hope their men don't notice. Other review is right, fits a bit snug at the waist, so go a bit bigger and leave room for layering and my single complaint is that the hand pockets (behind lower cargo) are too small. Other than that, smooth style for the streets in winter.

True all-mountain destroyer

Never Summer Proto CTX Snowboard - Wide

Never Summer Proto CTX Snowboard - Wide

Rating for this product: 4 February 15, 2012

The snappy, stiff tail of the Proto CT was a bit of a shock on the first run, but after a few chunky turns I made my way into some deep tree stashes, over a few little drops, and then sent a 15'er on an exposed chute where the stiffness and added camber truly excelled. It's super-fast on groomers and once I did get into some deeper pow, the rocker really shined. The only reason I gave the 154cm I rode 4 out of 5 is because it's a bit stiff for my style and size (150lb, 5'9") so the EVO's playfulness is more for me. Otherwise, this boards kicks more ass than Jet Li on a kill-binge.

Damn fine shred machine

Never Summer Proto CT Snowboard

Never Summer Proto CT Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2012

It doesn't butter, but is spreads sweetness all over the hill if you know how to push your own limits. Took the Proto CT154 out on a 6in + day at Canyons in Park City and banged out a few tree lines with more than recorded snow levels, hucked a 15 footer along the way, laid down some deep turns on groomers, and got my fair share of face shots (considering the below-rad snow depth right now) on a steep, north side ridge. The CT has a lot of pop in the tail, but that equates to a stiffer feel overall. While a true park rider can kill a big line effortlessly thanks to the CT's blunted tip and tail and ultralight weight, it's not as forgiving as the EVO. On the other hand, it rides as well switch as regular, with the exception of a slightly shorter edge when you make switch turns. Bottom line, this CT is one you want to show off in public.

Element Team Pant - Men's

Element Team Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 31, 2011

Team fit isn't too skinny, but definitely slimmer than most jeans and pants I wear. Note the other reviewer who said he went up a size. It's a good idea given this stretchy jean-like cut is slimmer than other pants of similar size. A bit long with the 32in inseam, but overall a really comfortable pant. Thin material should help them breathe well and the Team Pant looks slick with a collared shirt tucked in if you need to step off the board and up the style-meter.

Volcom Voltear Thrashguard - Long-Sleeve - Men's

May 18, 2011

Actually Jeremy, surfing (and other watersports such as paddleboard and wake) are exactly what this 'Thrashguard' is designed for. It's nylon and elastane just like a thinner, more traditional rashguard, just a bit heavier. Bottom line, it's designed to get wet, dry quickly, and stretch to move with you while you get nasty on your preferred board sport. Throw it on in a downpour and shred a longboard...sure you get wet, but it won't sag like a cotton or poly-blend hoody.

Lakai Manchester Skate Shoe - Men's

Lakai Manchester Skate Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 29, 2011

Dy-no-mite! The cleanest looking skate shoe that has every graced my foot is actually a tribute to holligan-ism. And since soccer fans and skaters are criminals by nature, I can see entire stadiums of fans celebrating with gangs of skaters ... all sporting the Lakai Manchester. I picked up a pair of the light blue suede (because I never got to see Elvis gyrate) and choose not to skate in them due to the fact they look too damn good.

Best kiddie-pack out there!

Deuter Kid Comfort II

Deuter Kid Comfort II

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2011

Lots of good backpack brands make decent kid carriers, but none compare to the comfort and feature-function of Deuter. For the kid: the adjustable seat (which is the top of the underside gear area), 5-point features mesh-backed, padded, and fully-adjustable straps with quick-release clip, side pads support the little one's upper torso, quick-release buckle on one panel eases entry/exit. For the parent: Mesh, ventilated back padding, wide waist belt with small zip pocket, quick-adjust back to work with smaller or larger peeps. Side mesh pockets up top are just right for kiddie drinks. Hydration sleeve keeps parent hydrated. Oh, and what a frame! Light, durable, and perfectly designed to distribute weight and provides a foot rest for the little one ... put the kickstand down (on a level spot, of course) and chill for a bit. What more can you ask for? Nothing else compares.

Timberland Washington Summit Boot - Men's

Timberland Washington Summit Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 1, 2011

Great fit, but only if you go down a size. I'm a solid 9 in most brands (sometimes 9.5), but I read the reviews and took the sizing seriously and ordered an 8 ... bingo! Perfect fit. About the boot; high-grade leather feels great and flexes well. Streamlined Vibram soles are nice and firm, which I've had in the past and appreciate for the longevity and comfort. Believe it; the firmer sole will lead to less foot fatigue. Notch at the achilles is great and should be ideal for motorcycle riding this spring/summer.

Work style without the grit

Matix Sable Jacket - Men's

Matix Sable Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 11, 2011

I used to have a Carhartt jacket and this Matix Sable has a similar "work-look" with a helluva lot more style. My biggest complaint with the C-heart was how short it was, even though the arms were long. I went a little big on this and hooked myself up with an XL so I can layer in winter, but it's a Matix, so I don't get totally swallowed. I'm 5'9" & 150ell b's so a Large would fit a bit more trim, but I'm stoked on the overall fit, style, and feel. Outer is thick cotton canvas and lining is a thick and smooth nylon (or polyester - who cares). I like the flap w/ buttons over the zipper too...gives it a classy "wear it out tonight" look that doesn't show gaps or look too gritty as it would if it just had snaps or a zipper (respectively).

Streamlined fit is the perfect fit for skaters

Analog Siphon Backpack

Analog Siphon Backpack

Rating for this product: 4 January 3, 2011

No complaints with this skate-pack! Unlike most packs I looked at, the Siphon has a flat front so my deck sits flush when strapped to it. Big buckles and thick straps keep it locked to the super-durable material. Slightly padded inside keeps my work computer safe and secure and the fleecy pocket up top keeps my shades safe when I head through TSA checkpoints. And best of all is the narrow shape (both side-to-side and front-to-back) that doesn't stick out and bump my elbows or make my board stick out too far. Perfect for work, travel, or everyday as long as you don't plan to cart around a bunch of bulky shiz. Only reason I knocked a star off is the 'waist strap' placement ... as if designers couldn't decide if it should be a sternum strap or waist belt...oh well, helps lock the straps tight when you need to roll out with some English on it.

Flow NXT-AT Snowboard Binding

December 14, 2010

Your size suggests a Large, but if you rock a low-volume boot (like Salomon) you can probably squeeze into a Medium, which will also cut a bit of weight and overall size on your board. Best thing to do is find a dealer and take your boot in ... lace up your boot and try both sizes. Of course since you're on the high and low ends of the sizes respectively, you'll have to adjust straps to get a snug fit.

Rome Anthem SS Snowboard

September 24, 2010

Both boards are light and poppy, but since you've been shredding the Custom already, the SS would be a good change. Rome's hybrid camber is super-floaty when you go deep, but still offers the stability and power of camber underfoot when bombin' groomers or gettin' technical on steep chutes in the late season. If you go with traditional camber of the Custom X, of course the pop is better and surely more stable at speed, but you can play more on the Anthem SS when you're not choking on snow or killing a steep line. And judging by your call sign (POWjoshPOW) I'd say you'll have more fun with hybrid rocker if this season blesses us with epic fresh levels. Take a chance and join the Syndicate, you won't be disappointed!

Back in the saddle thanks to the Cutter Bones

Cutter Bones Bike

Cutter Bones Bike

Rating for this product: 5 August 16, 2010

Just got back on a bike after a long stint living in the moutains and forgetting how nice urban life can be. My wife and I only have one car so I spent some time chatting with the the bike guys at Real Cyclist and decided the steel horse with the sweet logo and leather trimmings was the way to go instead of another car. Can't be happier with the single-speed set-up for the morning/afternoon commute and frequent trips downtown for some drinks or a simple grocery run. Clean looks grab lots of attention and positive comments. Tubes that came with it were a little weak, but new ones have been solid since replacing. All-in-all you can't beat the price for a new (complete) bike!

Timbuk2 Limited Edition Racing Stripe Messenger Bag

Timbuk2 Limited Edition Racing Stripe Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 4 August 16, 2010

After checking out a few less costly brands, I came across this Timbuk2 classic, with a little bonus stripe for those who may take to the streets after dark. Stoked on the sale price and really impressed with the craftsmanship and durable materials. No laptop sleeve on this one, but no problem as there are multiple organizers/pockets on the inside and a waterproof zipper w/ behind slip-pocket just under the flap. I wasn't sure about the stripe at first, but I've come to appreciate the added safety when walking, riding, skating after dark. It's not too big for everyday and was perfect as a carry-on for my latest flight.

Quiksilver Octagon Beanie - Toddler/Infant Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2010

Just the right style for my little grom. We got this for his 1st b-day and it's the style the big dudes wear. Big enough to fit him for a while most likely and soft, not itchy and abrasive. The longer style can fold down in the back, so he's already droppin' ill style while he drools all over the place. Sweetness!

Never Summer Heritage XR Snowboard - Wide

Rating for this product: 5 March 24, 2010

I love this lightweight beast! Never Summer's rocker design is a huge improvement from my older, camber stick and my skills started to rise above the plateau I'd hit after the first few hours. This board is the perfect all mountain ride for those who transition from the groomed trails to the steep gnar on a sick pow day. From face shots to steep lines, the Heritage XR bridges the gap between new tech and old-school toughness, just right for bigger riders with mammoth-sized feet.

Overall good change from Burton

Rome 390 Snowboard Binding

Rome 390 Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 4 February 3, 2010

Picked these up as a replacement for Burton Missions (worked well for many seasons) and I'm pretty stoked so far. Pros: super-cush ankle strap, convertible toe strap (wear it as a cap-style or over top of boot), extra dampening under binding, ratchets don't slip as much as Burton. Con: Check, check, check the ankle/toe length adjuster (it's just a clip, not a screw like most brands and mine came undone, which could have been result of stashing in car and the clip inadvertently released)...once again, checking your bindings (any brand) regularly is a good habit. That's it for the not-so-sweet. Other than that, these things are as comfortable as a lounge chair in hell.

Does the job.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 3, 2010

For protection from rain and snow in limited exposure, the Marmot Precip has been a great gift from my father. He doesn't backpack or ski (anymore), so for his limited-activity lifestyle encompassing mostly National Park visits and weekend drives into the mountains of Colorado, this jacket is ideal. Don't be fooled into thinking you'll get the same water protection as, say Gore-Tex, but "I don't have to spend the money on that expensive stuff". This rain jacket does a good job of shedding precipitation during limited exposure. This is not the jacket for 3-week backpacking trips in regions with high annual rainfall numbers. If that's what you're looking for, enlist the power of a Gore-Tex or another shell with a "guaranteed waterproof" membrane. But, if you need a lightweight, packable shell to store in your car or pack for the occasional shower that doesn't last for days, the Precip is for you. Note: Durable Water Repellant coatings (http://www.backcountry.com/store/search.html?mv_session_id=K58uXert&q=Nikwax)on all water-resistant/waterproof clothing needs to be re-applied (once a season if you seldom use the gear or multiple times per season with heavy use)!

All the warmth without the puff.

The North Face Aconcagua Down Jacket - Women's

The North Face Aconcagua Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 3, 2010

Picked this jacket up for my wife to meet her need for a "warm, down jacket that doesn't make me look like a marshmallow." If that sounds familiar to you (or any guy out there looking for a warm jacket for your lady who has similar feelings about the more puffy styles), then I highly recommend the Aconcagua Down Jacket. True to some other comments, the shoulders do seem a bit more broad, which is good for my wife with self-described "swimmer shoulders". At about 5'2'', the medium fit her just right...not too short or long and fits great under a shell when she rides. Not too shiny either!

Perfect shell

Marmot Skyline Jacket - Women's

Marmot Skyline Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 February 20, 2009

I purchased this shell for my mom for a Christmas gift as lightweight and transportable protection. My folks spend weekends touring the western parts of Colorado and surrounding states as well as the vast Rocky Mountain Range. Changing weather conditions required a versatile shell she can whip out when the snow flies and the summer showers erupt. I got her the XL as she wanted a longer, over-the-hips fit, which worked out perfect. She's rather small up top and only 5'7" and wanted to be able to wear over heavier layers too. Packs up small for keeping in the car or the bags for short hikes.

Perfect for Diaper Bag too!

Haiku Ultimate Messenger Bag

Haiku Ultimate Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2009

My wife was not satisfied with any of the so called "Diaper Bags" we looked at for our son. So we turned to bags at Backcountry and after researching Haiku, we learned the founder of Haiku actually designed this as a diaper bag with a slot for a laptop. Guess that shows the needs of parents these days. Although we plan to never need a computer when we out with our son, the bag is perfect. Large inner pockets hold cream, toys, diapers, clothes and other necessities and the two bottle holders are the same faux leather as the bag with tight elastic to hold in the tiny bottles. Plastic guards on the bottom reduce wear and prop it off the ground about 12 inch. The material seems super durable and we can't wait to use it for this guy and maybe if another one comes along later!
