Gregory Deva 70 Backpack - Women's - 4150-4455cu in

Gregory Deva 70 Backpack - Women's - 4150-4455cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2012

This pack is hands down my favorite women's bag. My wife's sister uses this and I prefer it over the Jade (which my wife has). The main difference (besides the size) is the separate compartment for your sleeping bag and pad in the bottom. I like being able to keep the gear separate (I pack both my wife's and sisters bags) and having easy access to the bulky gear that you usually remove first (sleeping items) is handy. We regularly do 3-4 nights in the Sierra Nevada's and my wife's sister brings ALL her own stuff including tent, sleeping items, clothes, all her own food and way too much other stuff she doesn't need. She wouldn't be able to do this with other bags. My wife's Jade couldn't get that job done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Gregory Jade 70 Backpack - Women's - 3906-4638cu in

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2012

This backpack is pretty good, but my one complaint is that it does not have a separate compartment or zipper for a sleeping bag/pad. I usually pack my wife's bag (as well as her sisters) and while you can fit a fair amount of gear in here, it could really use easy access to the bulky stuff you want to remove first when setting up camp (such as your sleeping items). It gets the job done, but I prefer the Gregory Deva (which her sister uses).

Mountain House Lasagna with Meat Sauce - 2 Serving Entree

Mountain House Lasagna with Meat Sauce - 2 Serving Entree

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2012

In my opinion this is the best tasting MH dinner product. It actually tastes like Lasagna and not something freeze dried out of a bag. My wife and I always grab one of these and share it. It's super cheesy (which makes it delicious), but it can be a pain to clean up. We usually eat right out of the bag so that really only means getting your spork gunked up, but well worth it :-) HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2012

This thing is awesome. The attachments for Nalgene bottles and quick release hoses make this a snap to set up and I believe it's actually faster than it's rated 1L/min flow rate. I can usually fill a 1L Nalgene bottle in 30-45 seconds. The pump is awesome and way less awkward than comparable MSR models with the standard pump design. This feels much more durable. UPDATE: I've used this filter for about 3 years now and had no problems with very minimal maintenance. Highly recommend.

It fits very comfortably around they neck, but can also be worn as a headband, baklava, handkerchief, etc. I wear this on every hike and have yet to get sunburned on the neck. I also love the fact that you can simply pull it up over your nose and mouth when the trail gets dusty. Highly recommend.

Asolo Moran GTX Boot - Men's

September 7, 2011

These are a bit narrow in the foot. Not incredibly so, but very snug with what I would call "average width feet." These would definitely work well for slippery mossie rocks and mud with a heavy pack, but they are by no means a "wide" boot. Definitely worth ordering and trying on. You can always send em back.

Asolo Moran GTX Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2011

I picked these up on sale and they were about half a size too big (Tip: Size down a half size). I decided to give the larger size a try because the sale ended and I would have to pay another $100 to exchange them (new color). Even a half size too big, they were still the best hiking boots I've worn. I put 14 miles on them right out of the box and didn't get a blister, hot spots or the infamous "black toe." Very comfortable, no break in period and incredibly durable. The ankle support is amazing and the traction is great. In the end, I decided to bite the bullet and exchange for half a size smaller and pay full price. In my opinion, they're worth every penny.

Rating for this product: 3 September 7, 2011

I was surprised to find that you don't add water to this, but after trying it, I was pleasantly surprised. It tastes like a real ice cream sandwich, albeit in a chalky non-ice cream kind of way. The taste is spot on, but the ice cream is more like a vanilla flavored lucky charm. Have some water nearby or just let it melt in your mouth. Descent to satisfy a sweet tooth, but way too expensive and bulky to take again.

Gregory Jade 60 Backpack - Women's - 3295-3906cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 6, 2011

I bought this pack for my fiancé and she loves it. After several backcountry adventures it still looks new, a testament to its durability. It's large enough to fit everything you need for several nights on the trail. We fit a down sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cookware, clothing and food for several days all in this pack. My fiancé has climbed Horsetail Falls in Northern California and continued to hike all the way to Aloha lake. This is a fairly intense trail (4 pt. scramble through many parts) and she was comfortable the whole way. Most recently we hiked 14 miles into Desolation Wilderness with some fairly aggressive altitude changes and she was very comfortable (even loaded with nearly 40 lbs). I highly recommend this pack.

Gregory Baltoro 75 Backpack - 4455-4760cu in

Gregory Baltoro 75 Backpack - 4455-4760cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 6, 2011

This pack is very comfortable and holds a ton of gear. I recently loaded it up with 48 lbs for 4 days in Desolation Wilderness, and was comfortable for a 7 mile hike in and lots of moving around once in the valley.

The features are well thought out and packing/accessing items in this pack is very easy. Side pockets hold maps and other small items needed for quick access. Hydration ports are located on both sides and there is a convenient Nalgene bottle holder on the side (finally a nice place to store that bulky thing!) There is also a large pocket on the front that works well for other easy access items such as flashlights, compass, knife, etc. Another nice feature is the divider between the top half of the pack and the area that holds your sleeping bag. I was able to keep everything nice and tidy - clothes and food on top while still removing heavier items such as sleeping bag/pad and cookware from the bottom. This makes for quick pack-up and easy moving through the backcountry.

One of my favorite features is the removable lid, which converts into a fanny pack. This is perfect for packing light items for off-trail excursions. We usually set up camp and then go explore and this pack was perfect for carrying a map, GPS, firearm, small first aid kit and water bottle. It actually holds a lot of stuff and is very comfortable.

Overall this is a great pack, very durable and large enough for several days in the backcountry. Innovative features make access to all your items easy without completely unpacking your bag and the Auto Fit Suspension allows for full range of motion on your hips while keeping the pack centered over your back. I highly recommend this pack.

Asolo Moran GTX Boot - Men's

I think they actually run a bit large, maybe half a size. You'd be better off ordering two pairs (true and half size down) and returning the one you don't want. Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack - Men's

Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 27, 2011

I've had this bag for several years now. I bought it on a whim at the Oakley store and for the most part I've been happy with it. It's very high quality, as you would expect from Oakley, and has weathered several multi-country excursions. My one grip is that I don't find all the metal parts on the outside to be very functional. They look cool, but generally they just weigh the bag down. I can fit a huge laptop in the bag and enough clothes/shoes to last several days. The top part is great for carrying items like a cell phone and sunglasses. The dry bag on the bottom is also nice for carrying wet clothes/shoes in. Overall I'm happy with the bag and I get a lot of compliments on it, but the metal straps and components on the outside have been more of a nuisance than functional. I've scratched my car & motorcycle on more than one occasion throwing this bag around.

Rating for this product: 3 July 25, 2011

Most people have commented on the size and it is definitely bigger than the pictures make it out to be. A standard flask is about 8 oz, so this thing is more than double that size. That said, if you plan on taking more alcohol, 18 oz will do some pretty good damage among a few guys. This this will hold nearly 3/4 of a fifth of booze. Great Tent - NOT FREESTANDING

MSR Carbon Reflex 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

MSR Carbon Reflex 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 January 19, 2011

This is a great tent, well constructed and incredibly light. My one complaint is that this tent is not freestanding at all and needs to be guyed out/staked in order to pitch. The stakes are great and work in a variety of ground conditions, but the majority of packing I do is in very mountainous terrain and I often find myself on a granite slab without many options for guying a tent. If I'm lucking enough to have some boulders nearby I can tie off, but this can be a pain especially if your options consist of a few large boulders. At the end of a hard hike/climb, the last thing I want to do is move some huge ass rocks. Overall a great tent, but it didn't meet my needs. One reviewer mentioned that this tent is "partially freestanding", which is not true. There is one pole that stretches the length of the tent and unless you can balance that arc perfectly, it won't stand. The description is absolutely correct: Freestanding: No.

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

January 18, 2011

I currently ride the K2 Kung Fujas and am finding that on groomers I get a ton of speed wobble. I like to rip down the groomers and when I'm not on an edge the K2s are all over the place. Can anyone offer a comparison of the two or let me know how the Mantras do on the groomers. I'm sold on their backcountry/pow capabilities, but when riding with the family (think racing down the mountain) I wouldn't mind having something that sticks in the corduroy.

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2011

This jacket is awesome. It perfectly bridges the gap between softshell and insulated puffy. I have worn this jacket in temperatures in the low teens with no shirt underneath and been warm sitting on a patio for several hours talking to my new fiance (in a metal chair). It's definitely too hot for aerobic activity, but I consider it the perfect insulation layer for when the mercury really drops. Throw a hard shell over it and you have a bombproof combo that will stand up to the harshest conditions. This jacket is just so versatile. Not only do I use this thing snow camping, skiing, on-belay and around town; but it really makes a perfect travel companion. I travel a lot for business and this jacket takes up no room, is incredibly comfortable and makes a great pillow on flights. It's like wearing a 10 degree mummy bag everywhere. So soft and comfortable. I highly recommend this jacket!

The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket - Women's

December 14, 2010

This does not have any form of zip out liner, but has a very comfortable lining. Not quite fleece, but still comfortable. The sleeves do have a sort of fleece lining around the wrist area that actually rests just inside the sleeve.
