Quite good, not quite superb.

Salomon XA Pro GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

I'm pretty much a 20 mile/week runner, a fair chunk of that coming offroad.. Of late, I've been running c. 5 mile trail races over moderately rugged trails on a weekly basis.

I've been running in the XA Pros since late last winter; I can conclusively state that they are no substitute for snowshoes in deep snow. In muddy conditions, the outsole grips extremely well--I've been running in major slop recently up and downhill with only the tiniest bit of slipping. The shoes also feel very stable on uneven ground. A couple negatives: I have wide feet, and the fit of the XAs seems fairly narrow. I tried to add an over-the-counter orthodic, and the results were very uncomfortable. On the plus side, in the limited running I do offroad I haven't had any shin splint problems. The Gore-Tex probably isn't worth the extra money. I did perhaps get a few extra weeks of wear due to GTX in early spring, but for the most part when it's really wet the water manages to find its way in from the top and wets them from the inside. They are completely unable to keep feet dry in knee-deep stream-crossings. The regular XA's, which are much airier than they might look at first glance online, would probably be better for all but very cold/light snow conditions. Overall, I don't mean to sound too negative--I like these shoes a lot, they're just more like a double off the top of the wall than a home run.
