June 21, 2011

Ive flown with my 4300 cu in backpack (at about 1/2 to 2/3 full) multiple times and have never heard a peep out of a ticket agent or a flight attendant, plus it fits just fine in the overhead bin. This pack is half that size, so you should have no problem using it as a carry on, recommend you dont pack it to capacity, just in case.

Outdoor Research Transcendent Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

June 21, 2011

The nice thing about down coats is they compress nicely to fit under a shell, provided your shell offers some breathing room. Advice from a bigger guy, I stand at 6' 2" and 205 and I wear my jackets in L to XL depending on the manufacturer (usually large). A medium should fit you well, just make sure you order a brand that Backcountry can ship outside the US. Otherwise, have it shipped to a friend or family member in the states then they can ship it to you.

Costa Del Mar Maya Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens - Women's

June 2, 2011

Adam,
Costa typically markets their glasses towards people who fish. If you click on the size link in the upper R corner under options, you will see a description for each lens color. For off the water use, either lens will offer very similar results. From a fellow pilot, I have an older pair of Costas with interchangeable lenses and I love em. I use the gray lenses for sunny conditions and switch to a yellow lens when flying daytime IFR or VFR with overcast skies. Both lenses offer nice clarity and I have found no noticable issues when trying to spot traffic above or below. If you have the time, check BC for a pair that offer interchangeable lenses for high and low light conditions, you wont be disappointed.

Rating for this product: 4 May 31, 2011

Lightweight, tough and securely holding stakes that are easy to set and easy to pull up. The MSR Groundhogs held my four season tent down in 30+ mph winds with gusts to 40+ mph. The cord attached to each stake adds security as you can girth hitch em to tent lines, so there is less worry your tent will blow away while you search for adventure.

CW-X Insulator Expert Tight - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 31, 2011

Run, hike, showshoe, workout, even yoga... A multi use performer, these tights have made twelve mile hikes feel like four, and four mile runs feel like one. Great sweat wicking ability and breathability. They do like to sag a bit, so keep the drawstring taught and no zipper means you will have to hike em down to do your business. Size L for my 34-34 lower torso fits perfectly, and I found they are not too revealing in the crotchal reagion. Get a pair or two if you know your legs will be working hard.

Arc'teryx Epsilon AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 31, 2011

What a jacket. Lightweight, very water resistant, very wind resistant (20-30 mph), great fit, asolutely dig the orange color, no cons whatsoever. After roughly twenty-four combined hours of hiking in dry conditions, light rains and moderate snows, the water still beads, and the pits smell like the outdoors. Size L fits 6' 2" 205lb frame perfectly with great range of motion. Makes me sad I have so many other great fleece and lightweight jackets, cause now they are going to sit in the closet as backups. I'm sure they will get over it...

Black Diamond Camalot C4's

May 4, 2011

Bottom line Mike, every climb is different, and some will require more of the smaller cams while others need larger ones. As a climber and someone who has many climbing friends, we all own and use the 0.5-3 sizes pretty regularly, with the occasional micro-cam or larger cam thrown into the mix. It doesnt really matter what sizes you double up on, because sooner or later, each size will find its use. If you have the time, check out what your climbing friends have more of, or see what is recommended for the climbs/crags in your area. You can also check out the Omega Pacific Link Cam, which has the size range of three cams (NEATO!) Otherwise, mix and match and just have fun with awesome gear.

Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack DO NOT USE

May 4, 2011

Happy to help Casey. The added peace of mind with the durable eVAC is worth the little extra weight, and you will be amazed at how much stuff you can stuff into these. A 13L sack should work great for your MH bag and extra clothes. If your packing a backpack, car, kayak, etc. and space becomes an issue, look into using a dry compression sack to get the air out. Black Diamond Camalot C4's

May 4, 2011

Mike,
If your starting your own gear rack, and you have friends with plenty of gear to share, a single set of these is nice (0.5-3). It tells your friends you want to help, without making a bold statement. Eventually though, you will find yourself doubling up on all these main cam sizes, then the micro cams, then the monster cams. Cams are the meat and potatoes of any gear rack, and they hardly ever go to waste on most climbs. As with all tech gear, be sure you understand their proper use and placement. Climb safe.

Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack DO NOT USE

May 4, 2011

Casey,
The Ultra-Sil has a lighter material, and the eVAC Dry uses nylon for added durability. The size of your sleeping bag, its weight and fill (down or synthetic) will have some bearing on choosing an appropriately sized stuff sack. An 8 oz bag should suit fine, but if you choose a larger sack, you can always stuff more on top of your sleeping bag with the extra room not going to waste.

Functional, but apparently flimsy

Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 2, 2011

I write this review with my girlfriend stating the following: "This jacket is very functional, very warm in cold temps, soft against the skin and has a great range of motion for multiple activities, including hiking, snowshoeing, backpacking, ice climbing, and wandering about town. During ice climbing, the jacket never soaked up water and stayed dry. The downsides to the jacket, the stitching is coming apart on multiple sites around the exterior of the arms, and the interior wrist cuffs show excessive wear and tear. The jacket has seen only four months of moderate use, and the stitching problem was noticed after only the first month. Perhaps this is just a defective coat, with others not experiencing the same issues." We plan on sending it back for a new one, anyone else experiencing similar issues, please comment or review.

Crumpler Dreadful Embarrassment Laptop Bag - 976cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2011

No longer must I carry my 15" laptop in a duffel bag. This laptop bag has compartments for everything with multiple options on how to stow your gear. It easily holds three large size books with a laptop, power supply and mouse, and there is still room for a few other odds & ends. The padded laptop compartment keeps my small investment safe from bumps while the top flap secures nicely and covers everything up. The padded shoulder strap feels comfortable, even with the bag fully loaded, and does not cut into my neck on short jaunts. Very happy with the product.

Aaron,
I work in the western suburbs and use a similar jacket (not TNF) for the winter and can honestly say, you will get your moneys worth with this jacket. The stowable hood and powder skirt help to keep Chicago winds off your head and from blowing up the bottom of the coat. Use the inner jacket for those random spring like days that pop up in February, then trade it for the outer shell when the cold rains hit in April. TNF makes good stuff, plus its on sale.

Five Ten Spire Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 April 13, 2011

Four years of use from multi pitch climbs to the plastic crag (indoor) my Spires are holding strong with no re-sole. The Spires make a good all around climbing shoe that smears and edges nicely, but is not overly aggressive in both function and fit. I wear em on easy routes or when I just want to goof around. Size 11 wraps my US size 12 foot comfortably without the "Hammer Toe" effect. I recommend these to any level of climber.

Mammut Infinity Climbing Rope - 9.5mm

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2011

Over the past year, this rope has taken on sport, trad, and ice climbing in stride. Lots of positive comments heard from friends with gear envy at the crags, especially about the duodess feature, and the lightweight feel that is easy on the hands (soft). The 9.5mm diameter glides nicely through belay devices and works knots with ease. Smaller diameter rope also means less fatigue on the hike to the climb and more space in your pack. Overall, a great quality rope.

15 deg bags tend to stay pretty warm, even a bit uncomfortable, during summer nights (more so in high humid areas). Opening the zipper helps, but as you cool off, you just want to cover back up until you get hot again. My recommendation is to purchase a bag liner. A liner will help keep the inside of your bag clean, they are nice for warm summer nights when the bag is too much, and they help you stay a bit warmer when your pushing the bag to its cold limit. Great lightweight fleece

Mountain Hardwear Octans Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2011

My new favorite lightweight fleece, it's perfect to wear casually to the gym or for busy outdoor activities. Compared to MH's Monkey Man fleece, the Octans is lighter and breathes better. However, both jackets work great underneath a shell when the winds pick up. Ive noticed no pilling after washing. Large, soft hand pockets are nice and the chest pocket is just right for a wallet, cell phone, car keys, etc. With just a lightweight, breathable shirt underneath, I noted only minor sweating after a three mile showshoe jaunt in the low 30's with a light breeze. Size large fits my 6' 2" 205 lb frame very well. Friends like it, the GF likes it, and I love it. Five stars.

Hands stayed warm

Stoic Welder Gauntlet Mitt

Rating for this product: 4 February 9, 2011

These mittens grip trekking poles, ice tools and snow shovels nicely. The wool liner is soft enough that it does not chafe after two full days of use. The liners did get a bit damp after a full day of ice climbing, but it was not uncomfortable, and my hands stayed warm in low 20 deg temps with windchills in the single digits. The "Talon Finger" design is a bit funky, but I found it easy to tie simple knots with or without the mitten shell on. The nose wipe works great, and didn't leave my nose chafed after multiple uses. The gauntlet shells offer a nice double drawsting system that tightens the mittens at your wrist and further up your forearm, keeping out the elements. However, there is no elastic in the liners, and this allows them to shift around if you are not using the shells. They must run a bit small, as the size XL fits my size L hands perfectly. Overall, four stars for a great multi use mitten.

Sierra Designs Mountain Meteor 2 Tent 2-Person 4-Season

January 25, 2011

Not a dumb question at all David. You'll need a four season tent if you are going to camp in areas where snow may accumulate on the tent, such as during a heavy snow storm, or with high winds and blowing/drifting snow that can sneak in through the mesh of a three season tent. Generally, a four season tent is designed with these conditions in mind. At the cost of weight, they add things like covers for mesh windows, extra guy lines, extra tent stakes and beefed up frames, just bring a buddy to help you carry the extra load. A four season tent will bottle in a bit more heat than a three season, especially in colder temps. If I might make a recommendation, try the TNF Mountain 25 tent. I have an eight year old four season TNF tent that has been through everything and I swear by it. You'll save yourself $50 as well as 1 & 1/2 lbs in weight. Happy camping.

Size and weight are the main differences. The pro is a bit smaller than the single and uses custom carabiners to reduce weight. However, both are constructed from the same material and will hold up to 400 lbs.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

January 10, 2011

The center bar is 1/8" steel and is quite rigid. There is some minimal "play" at the ends where the bar connects at the front and rear, but that is normal and won't interfere with its intended use.

Keep the feet dry

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2011

XL's help keep the rain and snow out of my U.S. size 12 boots. The durable/sturdy gaitor bottoms save your pants and legs from the errant crampon. Relatively easy to get on/off quickly, these work great with regular pants or snow pants. Overall nice functionality, comfort and design.

Good substitute

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 4, 2011

A recent trip out west almost turned sour when I realized I had left my shell at home. With a chance of rain and winds in our hike/climb forecast, my only choice was to find and purchase a new shell. I chose the Precip for a few reasons: 1) My Precip pants have proven themselves in modeate to heavy rains and 2) a lightweight, inexpensive shell with pitzips was a must. XL fits my 6' 2" height great and the jacket completely covered my size L Mountain Hardware Monkey Man fleece, keeping the heat in during moderate winds and 30 deg temps. The 13" open length pitzips vent nicely, and the jacket shrugged off a light rain, as I knew it would. Jacket hood covers my climbing helmet with ease, and I found no abnormal issues after wearing it with a large backpack. Overall, Marmots Precip jacket makes it a good lightweight pick or backup shell.

Functional, lightweight pants

Marmot PreCip Full Zip Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 29, 2010

Lightweight, comfortable and easy to use, these pants shrug off rain and snow. The full length zippers work great, and like the description above says, I found them quick to get on or off without removing my boots or shoes. After a six mile mountain hike in moderate to heavy rain (see photo), I did not notice any seepage through the zippers, and everything underneath stayed dry. These pants have two zips per zipper/leg, so if things start to heat up, you can open the top of the pant leg without compromising protection at the pant bottom. XL fits my 6' 2" height and 34x34 pant size. Good for hiking, mountaineering and snowshoeing, wear gaitors for tear protection if using crampons, as the bottom cuffs are not reinforced.

MSR MiniWorks Ex Water Filter

Rating for this product: 4 December 23, 2010

Albeit a bit slow to deliver, this filter worked well and is a great tool for water sources that may be stagnant, murky or if your just not sure whats ahead. We noted the time to fill a one liter bottle was approximately three to seven minutes, even in clear mountain streams. Once filtered, the water tasted great with no trace of muck, slime or sediment. Be sure to prime your filter before its first use, and to clean it if it's been sitting around a while. Overall, I'm pleased with this filter and it will definately be a part of my stash on future adventures.

Glare be gone

Costa Del Mar Release Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 400 Polycarbonate Lens

Costa Del Mar Release Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 400 Polycarbonate Lens

Rating for this product: 4 December 21, 2010

Talk about multi use, these polarized shades put my Arnette's to shame. The lenses are easily interchangeable, and nice to have for varying light conditions. Yellow lenses for low light driving or flying, gray tint for sun and snow days, and the browns make a nice "in-between" lens. The sunglasses are comfortable to wear over extended periods, though the arms could be a bit stronger, as I have noticed the glasses like to "drift" down my nose a bit over time. These are my first pair of Costas, and I am very pleased with them. Good look, good functionality, good deal.

What luck

Nixon Cannon Watch - Men's

Nixon Cannon Watch - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 21, 2010

I work in a profession that requires me to always have a watch with a second hand. After my watch broke a bit more than a year ago (not Nixon), the race was on to find a replacement. For the next few days, I spent my free moments scanning BC's sister websites (S&C, Tramdock, Whiskey, etc), when to my amazement, this watch pops up. I snagged one for half the price and have never looked back. The watch is a solid chunk of metal, and by that, I mean it's heavy. But the weight feels good on my arm and I've received a lot of compliments since the purchase. A few more features would have been nice, and while I paid half, I feel the above listed price is a bit much for just a basic watch. However, this watch is pretty durable. It's seen some "action" and it's still going strong. In terms of casual watches, I would definately consider another Nixon in the future.

PHURRY!!!

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 20, 2010

The perfect fleece for fall days or cool summer nights, the perfect insulating layer under a shell in the winter. A 200 lb frame thats 6' 2" tall, the large fits me great in all areas. The "Phur" will pack down in the neck/shoulders if you carry a backpack with it on, but after a few hours of use without the pack, it fluffs back up. Very comfortable on the skin and very functional.

Makes a 5 mile hike feel like 1

Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 December 20, 2010

Transfer some of the trail work to your upper body. My BD poles have seen at least a hundred miles, if not more, on trails of dirt, snow/ice, rocks, sand and even sidewalk. I have noticed less fatigue on my knees and legs, and as a result of their use I am ready to pound more ground the next day. The grips are comfortable, though the occasional blister may form after extended use. The FlickLocks work quickly and the poles compact to a nice size when not needed. Slap on the included snow baskets and your ready to hit the winter trails. Short or long hikes, these are a must have for any hiker.

Stay bug in a rug snug

Marmot Trestles 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Spirafil

Marmot Trestles 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Spirafil

Rating for this product: 4 December 20, 2010

A nice bag that gets the job done comfortably. I've pushed this bag to it's normal limit (23 degs F) with clothes on and stayed warm enough for a good nights sleep. The included stuff sack packs the bag down to the approximate size of a volley ball. I stand at 6' 2", and the long bag offers plenty of room, plus extra in the foot box to keep your clothes warm for the next day. A very good deal.

Sleep on your side

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Compact 6 Sleeping Pad

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Compact 6 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 December 20, 2010

After two plus years of use, this pad continues to amaze me. For starters, the pad is relatively light weight and packs down pretty small, a bit bigger than a large can of soup. Open the valve and it's firm after a few quick breaths. I have slept comfortably while on my side, though the back is a bit stiff in the morning. Until recently, I have used the pad on dry or slightly damp ground with no issues. Then I tried it while in a tent, on a foot of snow, in 26 deg weather. Leaving my clothes on and nestled away in a 15 deg sleeping bag, I awoke after midnight to notice my back was warm with no cold spots on my bod. Great job Pacific O.

Climb, Hike, Camp, Fly

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 December 18, 2010

The first time I used this headlamp, I knew it was going to be at the top of my gear stash. With the white and red LED's, the variety of uses for this headlamp are near endless. It's comfortable, with the head band fitting well without causing a headache during extended use. Functionality, the light tilts enough so you can keep the beam angle on the trail/rock in front of you one minute, then angles down so you don't blind your friends the next. After much use, I have also noticed that the rocker housing has not loosened and the light doesn't "drift" down as I walk or run. The red LED has received many compliments from friends for the easyness on their eyes. It's perfect when you want to let others in the tent stay sleeping, use for stargazing, and is awesome for performing tasks in the cockpit of an airplane while flying at night. The white LED's offer two settings (high/low), with just one setting for the red. This headlamp is now my primary, with my eight year old Princeton-Tec being moved to the bottom of the gear pile.

Good for the job

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 3 December 17, 2010

Don't let the three stars fool you. I like my Jetboil and have had fun with it for the past three years. Most of my outdoor friends all have one, and there is always an argument before a long hike about who gets to bring theirs. Our Jetboils have seen use from 800' to 12,000' and my experience has been that it will bring two cups of water to a boil within one to four minutes (depending on altitude). The Jetboil does well in windy conditions, but I have seen a strong gust snuff the flame. I've noticed the Piezoelectric ignition can be a bit sensitive, and usually a quick adjustment of the ignitor distance from the burner is all that is needed to get it to light. However, there have been occasions where the Jetboil has refused to light, but thats why good Boy/Girl Scouts always bring matches. While the Jetboil has a functional design and gets the job done after the burner is lit, the ignition could be a bit more reliable and you need to cook fast if your meal requires more than two cups of water.

Great shelter

Marmot Limelight 3-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft

Rating for this product: 4 December 17, 2010

In the last six months, this tent has been used multiple times from the deserts of California to the mountains of Colorado. It has seen temps from 20 degs to mid 60 degs, sustained winds at 30-40 mph, and moderate rain. The tent has been pitched on grass/dirt, on sand and even on a foot of snow and I'm pleased to say, it weathered all these tests. The included tent stakes dug into every surface we kicked em into and held fine. There was some mild condensation on the inside of the fly many of the nights we used it, but the sweating was not so bad that it dripped on us or made our gear wet, and the inside of the tent body always stayed dry. I stand at 6' 2", and I noticed there was plenty of space to stretch out laying down, while not hitting my head on the ceiling sitting up. A comfortable tent for two, and decent vestibule space on either side for gear. The tent could sleep three, but the middle camper would have to climb over the person to their L or R in order to get out (doors located length wise). While this door design is a flaw in my opinion, I am still more than happy with the purchase, and the tent is definately worth four stars.

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

April 2, 2009

It's most likely a matter of individuals attempting to purify snow melt water. SteriPEN water purifiers effectively disinfect snow melt waters, but in some instances, the SteriPEN may not readily activate if the water is so pure that there is not enough trace mineral content to cause the water sensors to recognize that the unit is submerged in water. Very pure water is a poor electrical conductor -- the sensors may not conduct enough electricity to recognize the water. This can easily be corrected by adding a small pinch of salt, or a drop or two of some kind of electrolyte beverage to the water. If you need more info, visit SteriPEN's FAQ website, link below:
