OR Alpine Bivy on Tettegouche River in Minnesota
Outdoor Research Alpine Bivy
September 1, 2009
Here is my bivy set up on a large rock outcropping in the middle of a river. (haha, i know not a smart location but I'd rather risk drowning in a flash flood then spend a lonely night in the thick woods worrying that there is a cougar hiding behind every tree around me). Oh, and my footprint is 2x the size needed because I forgot my real footprint at home and hand to use my tarp to protect the bottom of my bivy from all the sharp rocks.

Marmot Eos Tent: 1-Person 3-Season
January 5, 2011
I will pretend that there is NOT a $30 difference between these two tents since $30 is relatively a small price. So in my opinion:
CRITERIA = WINNING TENT
Living space = SL1 (by far)
Weather Proofness = SL1 (better guy points and lower fly)
Weight = SL1
Material Durability = Eos
Ease of Setup = Eos
Vestibule = SL1
Ease of Entry = Eos
Color = Eos! (who wants a grey tent?)
What tent would I choose? Big Agnes SL1 and I am sure that few would argue with me but I have seen the Eos on some smashing sales which is why I bought it over the SL1.

Norrøna Lyngen Softsthell Pant - Men's
December 6, 2010
I emailed Gore and they confirmed that Gore Windstopper uses the same memberane as Gore-Tex. Direct quote from their website: "Virtually all of Gore's thousands of products are based on just one material, a versatile polymer called ePTFE, which the company engineers to perform a wide variety of functions." In other words, the material is completely waterproof but the untaped seams make the garment only water resistant. These won't "breath" much better than a pair of Gore-Tex pants so you might as well go with Gore-Tex if you don't want a wet butt.

GoLite Den 2 Shelter 2-Person 3-Season
July 9, 2009
The only reason why you would need a foot print for this particular tent is to prolong the life of the floor and possibly make the floor a tad more waterproof. I have been searching for a footprint specific to this tent but I can't find one and I'm assuming the reason for that is because most people buying a tent like this would feel that a footprint is just extra weight.

Osprey Packs Xenon 70 Backpack - Women's - 3900-4300cu in
February 11, 2009
A week long hike will usually require around 4500 cubic inches (about 75 liters). Some people can use 60 liter packs, other people can use even less. It just depends on how many comforts you want to bring along. But with a bigger pack you are going to be more tempted to carry things you don't need. This pack would be an awesome pack for week long trips.

Vasque Boreas GTX Hiking Boot - Men's
February 8, 2009
To tell you the truth, when I first tried these boots on I thought they felt very uncomfortable (too narrow and "hard feeling"). But I bought them. The first day I wore them within 1 hour I got used to the different shape of these boots and enjoyed the unique fit as much as my broken in merrel outbacks. At the end of a 9 hour day the only complaint I had is that they don't have much cushion in them.

Big Agnes Elkhorn 3-Person Tent w/ Footprint
January 12, 2009
That is a big pack, if you throw the tent into a compression sack you should have no troubles getting it inside your pack. However, your question is kind of a hard question to answer considering we don't know what else is going to be in your pack aside from a sleeping bag and stove.

MSR IsoPro 4oz Premium Fuel Canister
January 8, 2009
Of course you need to take in account your stove/ conditions...But in general, if you're melting snow assume 6 liters per 4oz canister....and make sure that if you are using this in the winter to keep it warm and sleep with it in your bag because I'm pretty sure these things don't work properly if they get too cold.
