Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding
August 26, 2012
Thanks, Sandy, that makes very good sense. I'm 180lbs and mainly ski big-dump days where there is little "slam" like skiing. On occasion, I will ski off 10 to 15 foot drops, but nothing bigger.

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding
August 26, 2012
My primary objective is(was)to lighten my equipment. I have never been on a true backcountry setup (tech bindings/boot combo). My old boots (purely alpine) of 20 years back only weighed 8lbs-5oz. I bought a new pair (alpine) last year and was stunned when they came in at 11lbs-6oz! This is progress?!! This is what led to a search for a lighter boot..leading me into AT. So, here I am wondering if I can ski both the backcountry and the lift-served areas with a true AT setup. ??? Someone mentioned below that heli skiing wouldn't be a good idea with Dynafit type bindings..why not? All this talk I'v heard about tech type bindings not being "strong" enough for frontside lift-served skiing is confusing when I hear the other crowd comment on how they have skied 55 degree chutes with their dynafits. I am not going to find too many 55 deg. chutes at most of the resorts I ski. I have a feeling that if I make this conversion to AT, I'll never go back. The thought of untracked powder..!

K2 SideSeth Ski
August 11, 2012
How stiff is this ski? I do a lot of skiing on my "old" Blizzard Argos.. which by most standards, is a stiff ski (sidewall const.). Also, does K2 make a ski similar to the SideSeth, but is narrower.. say,.. around 110?

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL Series Footprint
July 22, 2012
I own two of these footprints; The UL1 and the UL2. Both are so lose fitting that they fall off if I pick up these tents to repostion them. WHY do these footprints fit this way? Is there a reason for this? For the record, the UL1 footprint weighs 5.5oz, and the UL2 weighs 6.32oz.

Black Diamond Prime Alpine Touring Boot - Men's
March 1, 2012
Has anyone out there had there foot in both the Factor 110 and the Prime? I've had my foot in the Prime and was wondering about if there was a noticable sizing difference between the two. In the Prime, the 26.5 was TIGHT, so I'm wondering if the Factor 110 would fit the same. Thanks!

Platypus Cleanstream Gravity Filter System
June 22, 2010
Jeff, Phil,
Thank you for your comments. The whole reason the need for a new way to filter water is because my significant other broke my Katadyn pump. (Last week she broke my watch... "it just broke") So, I figured I look at a gravity feed filter so there wouldn't be any moving parts to get broken.
Anyway, I like that Platypus gives you another 4L reservoir to accomodate different options/planning (even if I'll leave it at home to carry less on occasion). The MSR Autoflow Gravity Filter's internal mesh filter, as Jeff states, is of minimal concern because you can just let the big stuff settle out. I do like the roll-top closure better on the MSR system over the zip lock of the Platy bags. Bottom line: if the MSR were $30 cheaper I opt to go with it, since it doesn't have the second clean water reservoir.

Platypus Cleanstream Gravity Filter System
June 22, 2010
So.... Which one is better, the Platty CleanStream or the MSR Autoflow Gravity Filter? I did notice the MSR version has a mesh screen "prefilter" (according to a reviewer) where as the Platypus CS does not. Sure would like to hear everyone's comments! Thanks!

Has Big AGnes made any changes/modifications to the design of their original Emerald Mountain SL3 in the past couple of years? A YouTube report I watched showed a Vestibule zipper (during exit) design that was a problem.

Hey David,
Thanks for the response! Right now young Piper and I sleep in a Eureka SpitFire 1. I think it's listed at having only 18sq ft of floor space. So I'm hoping this would be better. We're a little cramped in the SpitFire, but it's doable!

Gregory Z65 Backpack - 3600-4332cu in
July 2, 2009
My results with the Atmos 65 were a little different. I didn't feel that the ATmos put the load on my hips as well as other packs I have used. In fact, I find myself with a 33 to 35 lb load re-adjusting too much in an attempt to alieviate excessive shoulder pressure. I think the reason for this is because the ATmos doesn't have a complete wrap-around hip belt, but instead uses the back mesh of the pack as part of its hip belt. (NOT to push the Z65,.. but it does have a complete hip belt, and that's why it weights just a little more) I also have found that I must cinch up the load lifter straps to keep the pack from bouncing. AFter listening/reading all the rave reviews on the ATmos, I'm considering returning it and trying the Z65.

Eureka Spitfire Tent: 1-Person 3-Season
December 5, 2008
Ok.... everyone knows the stated weight of all these tents is usually NOT accurate. Could someone tell me, to the nearest ounce, what this tent actually weighs ( tent, fly, stakes, guy line, stuff sack)? Thanks!Well..... I had to buy the tent to answer my own question! If you weigh ONLY the tent, fly, poles it acutally does weight 2lbs 12oz. But of course you're going to need those stakes and the two included guy lines because this is NOT a free-standing tent! That brings your total right up to 3 lbs 4oz (that's without the main tent sack.. add another ounce if you like carrying that too).
