Great in all conditions even chasing your lab across a frozen lake. It lets you play harder without having to worry about your gear. If you get too heated the pit zips are a great way to bring you back down.

Mammut Lucido TXLite Headlamp

Mammut Lucido TXLite Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2010

Best mix between a focused beam and traditional flood light. Mammut uses less Lumens and gets better quality light because they have superior optics, this translates into longer battery life and a better quality light than the other companies. additional bonus is that this works with their ambient light attachment which makes the headlamp double as a lantern.

I would describe it as an insulating vest with attached soft shell sleeves, shoulders, and hood. Pit zips are great for dumping small amounts of heat. My favorite Mammut piece that I own. and unlike other companies with a cross over insulating/soft shell jacket this one actually looks good and holds up well.

Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2010

If you only want to get one soft shell this is the one you should get. With Gore Windstopper this jacket fends off wind and light rain like a champ. and with huge side zips for ventilation it is easy to dump heat after a long session of skinning or charging on the mountain bike. Mammut Laser Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 25, 2010

The Laser is made using Schoeller's Nanosphere Technology which is a coating that gives it a really sweet surface that sheds dirt and water far better than anything on the market. The dryskin extreme wicks exceptionally well and even though it does not say it above I believe the Laser is still made with Schoeller's WB-400 softshell which is crazy durable. The Venta uses Windstopper which will block wind a bit better but otherwise material wise the Laser wins.

The Venta has pit zips, the Laser does not, although it does have two front pockets that can be used to vent (they work well for me at least)

Arcteryx has cool cuts or fits to their clothing but they have fallen behind on materials (they only use polartec and goretex) Now I mainly buy packs from them when they go on sale but nothing else. As far as jackets go anything from Mammut or Westcomb, or even some Marmot stuff will be better. Westcomb and Mammut are the only two companies really pushing the limits with new textiles and fabrics (such as eVent, C-Change, etc). Hope this helped you some.

Mammut Laser Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2010

I have a few different softshells most of them are made with Polartec Power Shield which makes for a great softshell. But, Schoeller WB-400 with dryskin and a Nanoshpere coating make for something even better. Very durable very warm, this really is a cold weather only soft shell. I wore it on a hike in 18 degree weather with a light base layer and an icebreaker 260 underneath and actually overheated and had to shed a layer. I am 6'4" 220 and went with the XL. It is a very fitted piece that makes it just past the waistline. Get one.

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2010

My other pack is an Arcteryx Acrux which is 70-80 liters so I was looking for something smaller for day and weekend trips. After a lot of research I decided on the Eiger 48. What an awesome pack. Streamlined design but still has a lot of very cool and usable features, whether you are in the mountains or hiking through the woods this is a great all around pack. I mean except for the lid being fixed and that there is not a feature specifically designed to hold a shovel I can't find a reason to complain. Very solid, very practical. It is all you ever hoped for in a pack.

Good solid comfortable pack for the price, fits my 6'2" frame well. Lots of pockets. My main gripe is that it is bulky compared to the more alpine designed packs which I am used to. Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2009

Very light weight. Keeps you comfortable in many temperature ranges. Has proven to be much more windproof than I would have originally guessed. I mean it is awesome. Look around about every other company has made a jacket that pretty much copies this one. Oh yeah and the shell is made from some recycled materials. Backed by Backcountry's guarantee and Patagonias you really don't have a good reason not to get one. Trust me worth the price but you can easily find a 20% BC code.

It is a great light weight high performing jacket. You can really feel it move the moisture away better than any thing I have ever used. Pretty much identical to the Westcomb Specter LT Hooded jacket, they are probably made in the same factory in Canada. Keeps water out like it is supposed to. September 19, 2009

I would agree I wear an XL in the Capilenes and they fit perfect on me but when I tried on the Large nano it was a little short in the sleeves and waist, so sizing is consistent and an XL is what I need in the nano. Note that it is not a fitted piece, and leans towards the boxy side, but all in all it is an awesome layer. In my opinion go with the Large.

September 19, 2009

This would be solid in the 30-40 degree range. Warmth is tricky to judge because it varies greatly depending on what other layers are being warm and personal factors like body type and activity level. With a fleece vest over it and walking I personally would be fine in it down into maybe the 20's if walking around town. Ultimately this is more of a light weight layering piece than your typical insulating winter jacket. Hope my opinions help.

Backcountry.com Stoic eVent Shell - Men's

August 24, 2009

From the guys I have talked to at gear shops and other places the breathable rating has to be "experienced" to fully understand it, and that the written rating does not give you a good idea of the difference. They said they no longer use goretex anymore and only buy stuff with eVent. They speak of eVent fabric with tones of awe and wonder in their voices. They almost act like the people on the commercials who switch from PCs to MAcs, they say they will never go back to goretex. So that does not really answer your question but I hope it helps..

I had gotten the BC merino crew and liked it so I decided to order this as well. I like it a lot, the 1/2 zip is great, chest pocket is nice as well. My only complaint is that I was expecting it to be thicker than it was. Since the BC Crew version said was light weight and the Bliss says midweight I was expecting it to be much thicker than the Crew and more along the lines of the Icebreaker bodyfit260 weight. It is thinner than that. But that is just a matter of expectations. I would like to see the next version be a little more of a midlayer fit. Good deal all in all

The North Face Cat's Meow Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Climashield Prism

Rating for this product: 5 August 10, 2009

First off I am not a big fan of TNF brand gear since they got bought out by vanity fair. But, all that aside I was impressed by this bag. I took it on my month long NOLS trip to Baja where it performed really well. I slept with no tent or tarp, just on top of a sleeping pad and this did a good job of keeping me warm, (I know that you are thinking Baja can't get that cold) it got into the 30's some nights and this kept me toasty, except for when the winds really picked up. what impressed me most was the durability seeing as I was sleeping on sharp rocks and sea shells that sometimes would puncture my foam sleeping pad this bag never got a snag or tear. The stuff sack and mesh storage sack it comes with are nice touches. If you are an active sleeper I would recommend getting the expander wedge to go along with it.

Ordered one in the 3L size hoping it would hold my 800 fill XL down jacket. I went on live chat and they told me that it would fit. It does not. I don't think it is worth spending 8 dollars on shipping to get the correct size though. Also the color that came was blue and not like pictured. The eVent fabric on it works but not quite to the extent that all the hype made me think it would. 4 stars just because of the things mentioned above. I have the BC Siphon primaloft in an XL and I got this in an XL. It just barely covers the bottom of the Siphon. After moving around a while the Siphon tends to show about half an inch out the bottom. It is a little tight in the back when moving but I have broad shoulders. Design is great, I got the carbon color and the red zippers really pop, looks sharp. Can't imagine this thing snagging or tearing, it is strong. Sleeves are cut at a different angle, you can tell from the picture. Took me awhile to get used to it but I am a fan of them. If between sizes or planning to wear heavy layers size up.

I wear a 36x34 in all pants and these ones are tight and on the shorter side. I still wear them so it is not that big of a problem. Also my carharts break in after a year or so and become very comfortable, these have yet to show any sign of becoming more comfortbale to wear. The gusseted crotch is nice thought, that is the one place on my carharts that has gotten a small hole from being active. I eventually bought 2 of these. I am 6'4" and the XL is excellent. (i wear XL in all patagonia tops) wear it casual or layer it for the trail or slopes. With this essential you should have high hopes... (i tried to be cool and rhyme just there)

Arc'teryx Acrux 50 Backpack - 2620-2990 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2009

Great pack, I have it int the 65 tall. This thing will last. thick durable and waterproof. If you don't use a hydration system you may get annoyed since there are no side pockets for water bottles but other than that it is an awesome pack. If you can find it on sale then it is even more gravy.

Chaco Z/2 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 27, 2009

I have the Z1 and the Z2s Mine were made in Colorado, apparently that needs to be taken into consideration. Honestly I like these a lot but sometimes my big toe gets a bit panicky like it is slowly getting strangled. I know you can put the toe loop down and not use it but often times it gets jammed in the sole then because of dirt. If you are deciding between the 2 go with the Z1 but either way you will be happy.

I have had a pair for 5 years and have given them HEAVY use. I have gotten them resoled once (originally they had the colorado sole) and I will have to get the rewebbed in the next year. A bit heavy but they are my go to sandal. The Z tan line is like the symbol of a secret society, people know whats up when they see that on your feet. Not sure how being made in China now will affect these sandals, although I have not heard the best things. Grab a pair while you can.

Sanuk Donny Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 July 27, 2009

I really wanted to like these but I found it hard. They are comfortable but the foam rips off the heal fairly quick after wearing. Also I intended to wear them without socks but my feet got far to sweaty inside of them and would slip around on the inner foam (i realize that could just be my feet). Willing to try a pair again in the future.

Chaco Leather Flip Sandal - Men's

Chaco Leather Flip Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 27, 2009

These will punish your feet early on, they gave me lots of blisters but that said they are comfortable. It took time to toughen my feet and break in the flops. It is a long term commitment, if you are looking for something to take out of a bag and wear these are not for you. I typically went through a pair of leather rainbows in about a year and a half. These will far outlast that. I wear a 12 in the Z1s and Z2s but I am a 13 in the flops. If you can pace yourself and ease into them they are a good buy. Wish they were still made in Colorado though...

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2009

I have owned this close to a year and have yet needed to wash it, I air it out on occasion but it really has not worked up any kind of bad smell. That is amazing. I am 6'4" and the XL fits perfect, I can wear a t-shirt under it if I want or all by itself. It is a great weight, not too heavy yet not too clingy like some lighter weight wool pieces. Only complaint is that the black color shows seems to show and pick up a decent amount of fuzz/hair. I wore this under my Marmot Zeus on a -15 day and was fine. very nice piece.

SmartWool Hiking Light Crew Sock

SmartWool Hiking Light Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2009

SmartWool is a great company, they are the industry standard for wool socks. These are a must have for your gear arsenal. You can wear them many times before they work up a smelly funk and even then it is not too harsh. My only complaint is that the high length sometimes becomes uncomfortable, but that might be because I wear sandals most of the year.

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2009

I am 6'4" and wear an XL in all BC brand stuff. This is a solid piece, very fitted, but not too much so. The half zip is great for dumping heat on the approach. Like other have said it is a little short in the front, but, that makes sense for when you are wearing a harness. Very light weight versatile piece. Get it

Arc'teryx Gamma AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 26, 2009

I got this piece about 6 years ago and put it through the wringer of daily wear and trips. Stood up to the challenge. Power shield is a great material for softshells, my personal preference is that it is the best. Mine was made in Canada, not sure how much the China production has affected it. Arcteryx is the industry standard, every other company copies them to some extent. If you have the money it is a solid investment. But it is time for mine to be retired. But for 6+ years of service it had a good run.

As other have said the thumb holes are a bit off but I still find them usable. You really cannot go wrong for the price. I mean lets face it merino wool is the best material for baselayers.

These are great multi purpose pants, wear them in all seasons, just throw some long underwear bottoms on like the BC primes and these make pretty good snow pants.

Patagonia Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 26, 2009

Great cottage fleece. I wear an XL in all patagonia tops (i am 6'4") and this one runs a bit on the baggie side, similar to the Retro-X jacket's cut. nice warm comfortable fleece. If you are looking for a fitted cut this is not what you want. I got it for cold nights on the beach around the campfire. Solid fleece, expect to get good wear out of it.

Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 26, 2009

I am 6'4" and wear an XL in patagonia. Great top, I have the hooded version but the same basics apply. It can be worn against the skin or over a capilene. Smooth outer surface makes adding a layer on top of it easier because it does not cling as much as a normal fleece. Wish I had had this piece of gear on my NOLS trip. One of the most versatile layers I have seen.

Perfect for what it is, I am 6'4" wear an XL in patagonia and this is very fitted which is awesome. Breathes like a champ and wicks fairly well. This is my go to layering piece when it is too warm for my mountain hardwear monkey man. R2 is one of the lightest and warmest peices i own and it packs down fairly small. hope that helps

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 26, 2009

Let me start by saying I love this fleece. I am 6'4 and wear an XL in all patagonia tops/jackets such as the R2 and the R1 flash. This being said the fit on this is weird, the chest is far too big for me but when I tried going to the L size the sleeves were too short, just something to keep in mind. I call this my cookie monster fleece, great look, blocks wind like a champ, too heavy for trail use although would be fine for belaying. 4 stars because the fit is not true to other patagonia tops and there is no draw cord on the bottom.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

July 26, 2009

You should be fine while moving, temperature comfort varies greatly person to person. My opinion is that you would be fine with a soft shell underneath provided that you had a solid base layer on under that. You may get chilly while resting but while moving you should be toasty. remember though it is a shell, not an insulating peice

Mountain Hardwear Pinnacle Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 21, 2009

Great jacket. I have the MH compressor, and monkey phur. Both fit great under this jacket for layering. I am 6'4" 200lbs and wear an XL in MH jackets. This jacket has a slightly longer cut so their is no fear of the sleeves riding up your arms while active. Very water proof and breathable. Tons of pockets and large pit zips. Solid piece of gear.

Evolv Rex Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

Great look, much stiffer than I was expecting which is a plus. I get tons of compliments on them. nice sidewall cushion like that in a skate shoe. A little slick when walking on grass or tile but then again thats not really what they are for. For the price you cannot go wrong. True to size I thought. I wear anywhere between a 12-13 depending on the brand and a 12 in these works I do wear them unlaced most of the time though.

Tall and it fits me well

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2008

I am between 6'3"-4" and weigh like 200 pounds. Depending on the brand I wear between a L and an XL (for those of you who are tall you can understand) often times the L is too short and the XL is too big in the chest. This jacket is great. It is light weight, warm, and it does not make one look like a marshmallow... It is kinda fitted. All you could want from a down coat. My one gripe would be that some down comes out, although I do not know what is normal for down leakage...(let me know what is norm) I like it because it is not shiny like many other comparable down jackets. I am a NOLS alumni and only wish that I had this coat on my last trip. Get it

Forgot to add that I got the large and it worked/fit great.

Update: after about 1 year the elastic in the left sleeve cuff gave out. I don't imagine this being a problem on most of them, maybe it was because i have big hands... But, I was able to return it without a problem. Great customer service.
