Thought this might help some people. I'm not sure if it is 100 percent spot on. I jacked it from some forum where a bunch of outdoorsy engineer types were discussing breathability. Arc'teryx Hyllus Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

March 29, 2010

There's no such thing as an all-in-one jacket. Buy the Hercules for the perfect on-the-move, breathable midlayer, and pair it up with the Alpha LT (which is 100% wind and waterproof) when the weather gets real nasty. Most of the time, you're burning up so much, all you'll need is the Hercules (which breaths way better than most softshells). It's a big investment but it's worth it for a match made in heaven. Shop around and you should be able to find them half off at some point.

Patagonia Merino 4 Classic Zip-Neck Top - Men's

December 18, 2009

They are both midweight base layers. The Merino 4 is made of natural merino wool (more warmth, but dries slower). The capilene 3 is synthetic material, which does better with wicking moisture (breathability) but maybe not quite as warm. Both are good baselayers. You should look into windproof fleece jackets, hardhsells or softshells for an outerlayer, depending on your skiing conditions. A pullover version may be the closest thing to a "shirt" though, if that's really what you want.

October 13, 2009

The SV is somewhat thicker weight material and thus designed for more severe (SV) conditions. The LT is made for lightweight enthusiasts, though still quite tuff (I have one). The only thing I'd be concerned about is the sleeve length. If the medium is just right when you raise your arms than I'd be worried about the extra inch you'd lose by going with a small. I have to draw the waste in a bit too with my large.

A jacket of heroic proportions

Arc'teryx Hyllus Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 17, 2009

This is the ultimate standalone piece, much like Hercules was as a Disney original (mainly because of Hades?). The 02 fabric breathes far superior to other softshell fabrics such as regular powershield -- which means it's also a kick-ass layering piece. Despite not being highly windproof (though pretty resistant), the high-loft fleece provides adequate warmth to keep you moving up and your sweat moving out. I maiden-voyaged the jacket up Hood and didn't take it off once. The fuzzy hood was almost as nice as the sweater-on-my-insides (a.k.a. whiskey) that we downed at the summit. It also fits nicely over a climbing helmet. The jacket length is dialed for my 6' 4" 185 lb lean frame (the drawstrings are necessary to bring the waist in some). Teamed with my Alpha LT, it makes for an epic duo. I really don't see ever finding a more glorious softshell/fleece. I suppose that's why it's the "Hercules."

Rating for this product: 4 May 9, 2009

The shirt is skin-tight and a little see-through?(at least the oatmeal color). But it's merino soft and naturally odor-eating. Sweet for active-wear, but for hairy-large-nippled woodsmen, perhaps not the best for casual use because of the translucence. Maybe you should wax those too...

Comfort trumps quality concerns

GoLite Storm Dragon Trail Running Shoe - Men's

GoLite Storm Dragon Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

Hands-down the most comfortable trail shoe I've ever run in. I know many people have complained about defects, but I have yet to experience any after numerous 15-mile weekend backpacking trips and a dozen or so seven-to-ten mile trail runs. I have had nothing but happy feet at the end. The inside of the shoe has a soft fleecy lining and the softshell material thwarts cold wind. The best part is the wide toe-box and swappable inserts which, when dialed in, make for a perfect fit and no blisters (even after 12 mile, hill runs). Like any softshell material, it isn't downpour-proof. But they do well with moderate moisture. The huge lugs do make the shoes somewhat unstable in rocky areas, and slippery on wet rocks. The shoe does come with gaiters, which I haven't found necessary yet but fit comfortably. With that in mind, I wouldn't fork out $130 for these (or any shoe for that matter). Running shoes are only designed to be used for a few months of solid use anyway. And solid running you'll have with these super-light trail-eaters. At $65, they are worth risking the quality issues for their unsurpassed comfort.

Size down if you're lean

Outdoor Research Expedition Crocodile Gaiter

Outdoor Research Expedition Crocodile Gaiter

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

The large fits great over my 12.5 Kayland MXT, despite my concerns that the wider expedition would be too small if I sized down. I'm 6' 4" and mainly wanted the gaiter for snowshoeing and mountaineering. With a thick base and nylon hiking pant, the gaiters fit over the boot snugly and just a hair loose on the calves. Ideally, these are made for use with wider plastic mountaineering boots and thicker insulation. But I wanted a bramble and crampon worthy piece of gear. Plus they provide a little extra insulation. A necessary addition to any winter gear stock pile, there's a reason OR hasn't changed much on the these in years.

Rho-yuken!

Arc'teryx Rho Balaclava

Arc'teryx Rho Balaclava

Rating for this product: 4 March 23, 2009

Yes, that was a Street Fighter pun. And yes, there's no reason a balaclava can't be functional and make you want to scissor-kick your roommate when donned. That being said, the Rho isn't quite as long as I'd like for my tall head (it doesn't quite tuck cleanly into the base under the neck). But, the Power Stretch makes for a very comfortable and adjustable fit for the face. The eye area stretches and pulls down behind the head to act as a neck gaiter (though I wonder if stretching it that much will affect the fit over the eyes in the future). Power Stretch isn't real windproof, but I didn't want that in a balaclava because that's what shells are for. I bought it wanting breathability, with adequate insulation. Check and check. The stitching is solid and is gray-blue in color. Just another Arc'teryx design that is sleek, effective and durable. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some boards to chop.

My most versatile piece of gear

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 23, 2009

Running, snowshoeing, backpacking, layering, this is the goat-to piece for it all. Throw a hardshell over it and you're golden for any rain/snow/cold combination. It breathes pretty well for cold-weather runs too (though, the sweat wicked away from the body but hung out on the iPod in the tech pocket). The wind protection and fleecy liner make it pleasantly warm as a standalone layer. My only wish is that it were available in a tall size. The medium fits closely and comfortably around my 32" waist, but is a bit short on the sleeves and torso length. A large would fix that but would balloon the waist. Alas the woes of the tall and lean. For you normal-sized people -- buy this. The carbon jacket matches the carbon colored himal beanie, a combo that, when paired with designer denim, no storm or gear-savvy woman can resist.

Rating for this product: 5 March 16, 2009

Scored with the lady on this one. She lufts it. The guacamole and maroon interior are very complimentary. And the tapered fit works great under her Marmot shell. She's 5'7" and I went with the medium. Now maybe we can leave a few layers behind on our fall and winter outings. It may not be warm enough for standing around in freezing temperatures but it's a fantastic layering addition and very light and packable. The hips do flair out a bit so it looks a bit funny when it isn't zipped up. Easy fix there though.

MSR Denali Evo Ascent Snowshoe

March 15, 2009

The MSR Denali Evo and Ascent shoes are the most durable. This is their best attribute. The Lightning Ascents on the other hand are lighter and more difficult to manufacturer. They also offer better traction. Usually when you combine 'lighter' and 'better performance', it also means more expensive. The Lightning Ascents are MSR's flagship snowshoe.Th plastic material on the Evos also gets pretty banged up around the edges after a few years. The lightning has an aluminum frame which will not really get damage much over time. Perhaps that's the reason for the price disparity.

Basically it's the same jacket without the hood. They're amazing jackets too. I use mine for just about everything. They're insanely comfortable! The waist actually isn't tapered but right at the cuff of the sleeves it is just barely tapered. I am 6'1" and right at 175lbs. Also my dress shirt sleeve length is 34/35. I got a size large and it left just a little room for some layering. I would consider bumping up to the XL if I were you. Extra length in sleeves won't cause issues with this jacket due to the tapering of the sleeves. You could always order a L and XL and send back the one that doesn't fit but I'm willing to be that the XL is going to fit the best.Hope that helps.

Newbies and veterans alike need this over at least one doorway in the house. The multiple rows of varying-depth pockets offer unlimited strength building exercises. If you're an experienced climber, you need the versatility to get a decent workout. If you're new, you will be excited about the intriguing shapes, holes and textures...and will eventually appreciate the versatility. I'm still pumped about the pretty color and marbled appearance and have just recently begun appreciating the ridiculously narrow, lower grip. If you're in the hangboard market, don't be irrational, buy one.

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Pant - Men's

Not at all.--They do block a little wind. And they are fantastic for runs, though maybe not the bike? It is a fantastic base and you can't beat the price.

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Pant - Men's

February 16, 2009

Yup. These are basically tights so they should fit great. They stretch amazingly well and are a great base. Robin Hood would be jealous.

Atlas 12 Series Snowshoe

February 15, 2009

1235s are rated 300 +lbs, as you may already know. I freakin love this shoe and highly recommend it for extensively snowy outings (ie, the Cascades in winter). As long as you are wearing a boot that isn't overly bulky (such as a sorel, snowboarding boot, etc) than the fit should be fine. Bring your boot into a local outdoor store and check the fit before you buy.

Arc'teryx Sniper Zip Jacket - Men's

February 15, 2009

I'm 6'2" 190 and the large is perfect for me. I would definitely go to XL, especially if you have long arms and a skinny trunk, like I do.--Yeah, Rhino, I too wonder why it is assumed that if one is tall, one must surely be overweight. Alas, Arc'teryx is about as good as it gets for sizing for tall, lean dudes. I have a friend who has even had some of his dead birds tailored.

GoLite Sun Dragon 2 Shoe - Men's

February 15, 2009

I upsized 1/2 size. I would give you a word of warning. I could only get about 20-30 miles of trail running out of these shoes. The soles literally wore out that quickly. I went through 4 pair in 6 weeks. Luckily backcountry.com has the most rockin return policy.Just food for thought! The fit was equivocal for me. But the support and comfort wasn't there.

Metolius Simulator CNC Training Board

February 15, 2009

Peter, Metolius recommends that you first mount the Simulator to a 5/8" or 3/4" piece of plywood, then mount the plywood to studs above a doorway. You can find these instructions at www.metoliusclimbing.com/howto-installboards.htmJC--Metolius recommends that the plywood be anchored into at least two (preferably three or four) studs. By mounting it on the plywood first, the weight is distributed evenly over the studs. It also provides a spacer so that the hangboard is flush with any trim around the doorway.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

February 8, 2009

The Shift is going to be lighter than both the Gamma MX and the Welder Hoody. As far as I know, the MX and Welder weigh about the same. The Welder weighs ~22oz for the largeAs far as materials though the Gamma SV is comparable.

It's not looking like that is the case for this year. I love the carbon but I realize it's not the best color for snow.

Arc'teryx Hyllus Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

February 4, 2009

Slim fit like most dead dinosaurs. It would fit under a hard shell but also acts as an outerlayer on it's own, though not as water or wind resistant as the Gamma MX or SV. Check out BeeCee's posts below. Also, most hard shell hoods are large enough to fit a hooded midlayer (such as the hercules) underneath.

GoLite Sun Dragon 2 Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 4, 2009

I've put about 10 runs (six to seven milers) on various terrain with these and have found these to be great on most trail conditions except real rocky areas wear jagged pieces can jut between the nubs and throw your balance off. Also, these are definitely not made for any urban or treadmill runners, simply because on firm surfaces the the lugs put a lot more pressure on the balls of your feet then soft ground does. Which equals pain after a while.

Seeing as they are mesh almost completely around, the shoes are just about impossible to keep wet. Which equals happy feet. It also means cold winds ignore your cordial requests to stay outside the shoe.

All-in-all, it'd be nice if the shoe was a little more versatile comfort-wise for the price. I still prefer the Storm Dragons which offer the best of both worlds (Breathabilitia and Comfortius), and are waterproof too. And like the Storm Dragons, I wouldn't pay full price for these either.

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

January 30, 2009

It's all shell and no insulation. I'm 6'4" 180 lbs and a large is the most dialed shell I've ever seen. It is an athletic fit like most arc'teryx clothing, but it still has room for a base and mid layer. I'd go medium unless you have real long arms and broad shoulders.

Outdoor Research Expedition Crocodile Gaiter

January 29, 2009

These stay up extremely well, even without having to over tighten them which is nice. They're great gaiters!Hope that helps.AS Kisow's review says below, they are a larger circumference. I wear a 12.5 boot and sized down for a large and the fit is good if I layer.
