Metaphor liner close up

Metaphor liner close up

Outdoor Research Metaphor Jacket - Men's

February 22, 2009

This is a close up of the two different liner materials. The dark liner on the left really does look and feel like rubber and is thicker. Does anyone know what this material actually is?

Metaphor inside

Outdoor Research Metaphor Jacket - Men's

February 22, 2009

This is the inside of the Metaphor. The light gray area is the soulder area, Gore-tex Pro? The dark area which takes up most of the inside is the Pac-lite? Yes it is, but.. the Pac-lite looks and feels like rubber and it does not look like it breathes. The Pro material looks and feels thinner. What is this dark gray material laminated onto the Pac-lite?

CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Classic Cap - .75L

CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Classic Cap - .75L

Rating for this product: 5 April 29, 2011

My cupboards are stocked with these bottles in all 3 sizes. I use them for every type of drink there is and they never retain a smell or stain after washing. The cap seals very nicely and I have never had a leak. The cap will sometimes have some liquid in the threads or the top of the cap when you unscrew and it may cause a tiny spill but it really is no big deal. These bottles are bullet proof but unfortunately they slide down an icy slope very fast, so keep it tied down if it is on your pack.

Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's

Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 27, 2011

I love the feel of these pants. The stretchy material is perfect for any type of cool to cold activity from late fall to early spring. I don't wear these for skiing but wear them for mountaineering and cold weather hiking and snowshoeing. A waterproof shell glides on and off over these because they are slick. The Screes are not windproof but deflect some wind and breathe great. But back to the stretchy material, it is incredible the amount of unbinding and uninhibited movement you have when wearing the Screes.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 26, 2011

I am going on my second pair of these shoes. I run on loose dirt, rocky, desert trails and the XA pros hold up perfect for me. The tread is very aggressive and corners very nicely going up switchbacks, and performs great coming back down at full speed. The forefoot is on the thinner side and not very stiff so small pointy rocks can be felt. The heel is well cushioned and stabilizes well. All my shoes are a size 10 and these are true to size at 10.

Great Gloves For All Activities

Pow Gloves Villain Glove

Pow Gloves Villain Glove

Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2009

These gloves are the best all-around gloves I have ever had. They are waterproof, breathable, and just enough insulation to keep your nose pickers from getting cold. The Villains are not just for skiing or boarding but they are great to use while mountaineering. They grip an ice axe well and have plenty of mobility to grab onto rocks or anything else you need. These are very tough gloves with the full leather palm and the heavy material on the back. The Velcro closure and neoprene cuff add for a snug fit around the wrist but the cuff doesn’t extend very far. Inside the glove is a light fleece so hands slip in and out with ease. Sizing chart is NOT accurate, I have an 8.5 inch hand (yes, measured correctly) and an XL is snug.

Mammut Mirage Harness

Mammut Mirage Harness

Rating for this product: 5 December 7, 2009

This being my first modern harness, (I have had a BD simple nylon webbing harness for 15 years using it to rappel off cliffs and buildings) I was happy with how comfortable it was. I have a 34 waist and a medium fit well, even over cold weather layers, and with room to shrink or grow. I am not planning on climbing a lot so I didn’t want to spend a lot on climbing gear but I did want quality. I compared this to the BD Momentum and decided on the Mammut Mirage because it has a curved plastic piece where you tie in, just seemed like better quality for the same price.

The Mighty Blue Wall Walkers

Evolv Royale Climbing Shoe

Evolv Royale Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 December 7, 2009

These are my first climbing shoes. They are made with simple but quality construction and I don’t see them falling apart anytime soon. I normally wear a size 10 average width in all my shoes from mountaineering to runners and a size 10 in these are tight fitting at the toes but they fit well. The Royales being my first climbers, I was told they fit perfect because they are not supposed to be “comfortable”. I have used them on an indoor climbing wall and on a 5.6 climb at Red Rock and I was happy how well they worked for me. I am a beginner so I didn’t want to spend a lot on shoes so these were it. These are inexpensive but not by any means cheap.
And NO they won't turn your feet blue.

Rating for this product: 4 November 9, 2009

I am at 5'11", 185lbs, and a 44" chest, and I find the large is tight under the armpits and around the shoulder blades. I think it's going to be a bit annoying during a full day of wearing this shirt. I really like the quality and would classify it as "very lightweight". I would have to say the sizing chart is meant to be for a tight, close to the skin fit. Great fitting cut if you don't have broad shoulders.

Black Diamond Orbit Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 October 6, 2009

I got this about 2 months ago and have used it several times camping and once in the attic doing some wiring. It is so smal, lightweight, very durable, and provides an enormous amount of light, the non-blinding kind of light. If you don't have one of these then you are living in the dark ages or at least living in the days when your head gets sqeezed by your headlamp strap while reading.

CONSIDER THIS WEIGHTLESS

Marmot Exum Jacket - Men's

Marmot Exum Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 29, 2009

When I first got this shell I was a little skeptical on the durability because it is very thin fabric. I am used to shells with a much heavier denier so I was a little leery about folding this up and sticking it in a pack. My first trip out calmed all my worries and insecurities about the Exum! Climbing through bushes and over boulders it took many rubs and pokes by branches. The Exum feels and weighs like a featherlite, but it stands up well from medium to harsh wind, rain, hail, and the ground elements, like it was a piece or WoW epic gear. With just a thin insulator underneath the fit was perfect for me. Because the Exum is so lightweight, your mobility is unbelievably unhindered; it even feels like you’re not wearing a shell. The hood can be adjusted a few different ways to fit your grape, even with a helmet, so you have no problems seeing in any direction. I really don’t have any cons with the Exum, I feel confident about balling it up and sticking it in a pack if necessary, but I wouldn’t want to wrinkle it because I respect the Exum so much now.

WHY NOT USE THIS?

Black Diamond Axe Protector

Black Diamond Axe Protector

Rating for this product: 5 July 26, 2009

I know the really cool Mountaineers don't use these because they are for the geeky mountaineers, so hey, I guess I’m a geek. Why wouldn't you use this? Gear is expensive and tears in gear suck. You are probably saying, "I've been mountaineering for years and I have never needed one". Well then the odds of you snagging yourself or tearing you gear is closer to reality. Actually a veteran mountaineer I met, saw mine and said, "Whoa, that's cool".
Works on my Raven Pro.

When you carry something which you rely on to be a major factor in possibly saving your life at an unexpected time, you must have confidence in it. The Raven Pro fit very well in my hand, the weight was balanced perfectly, the materials strong, and of course Black Diamonds trustworthiness all played a factor in why this is a great tool. After a day of mountaineering it now holds a few indelible scars which will be associated with the first of many MAJOR outdoor accomplishments in my life. Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 6, 2009

Used these in snow last week in the high sierra mountains and they performed flawlessly. The heavy denier on the inside of the leg did a great job of protecting against nicks from crampons, not even a mark from all the crampon spike rubs throughout the day. My leg punched through some soft snow all the way down to my waist and no snow penetrated. Hooked up real tight an secure with a pair of backpacking boots, I never had to readjust. Even glissading down the mountain in sloppy wet snow nothing got in. The strap around the arch held up without a scratch even with a lot of waking around on sharp rocks.
I'm 5'11" and wear a size 10 boot, have thick strong calves and a Large fits perfect.

My First Crampons

Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 July 4, 2009

I strapped these onto a pair of Lowa Banff's and they worked great. Once you get them fitted, which took about five minutes, they were on and off within a few seconds and never had to readjust them once attached. I was completely confident while I was ascending a steep chute which is a good thing because you don't want to have to focus on gear at that point. I used these while climbing the Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route on snow which ranged from hard frozen early morning crust to soft afternoon crud and I never had a problem or any difficulties. The ABS plates come with them and already installed and they worked fine. They are very well made and durable and I can see myself using these for years to come.
**I would only use these with backpacking boots, I tried them on a pair of Lowa Renegade hikers and they don't work.**

Now This is a Great Ski Jacket

Marmot Rubicon Jacket - Men's

Marmot Rubicon Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

Outside fabric is light but very durable for skiing. I really like the inside liner because it is a silky smooth nylon so it doesnt inhibit movement when you are wearing a fleece or just a heavy merino pullover. The inside pockets are the best feature, there is plenty of room for all your goodies from snacks to sound and an awesome goggle pocket. Quality is top notch as is always with Marmot. Gore-tex Performence is just fine for snowsports, I can't see enough snow coming down or falling so many times that any liquid will be getting through. In my opinion Gore-tex Pro is overkill and too expensive for skiing even with heavy snowfall. Large fit me perfect, 45 chest 5'11" 195lbs and broad shoulders.

The North Face Solo 12 Tent 1-Person 3-Season

March 14, 2009

The Tech Specs say that it is freestanding, but it looks like it needs stakes in the picture (for the fly at least). As far as the amount of mesh goes, I'm not sure. Check thenorthface.com for alternate views. If you're in the desert won't you leave the fly on to keep the sand out though?

There is no fly, it's one layer, only mesh is for venting. This is not a freestanding tent. There are 7 anchor tabs for stakes. The tent will stay standing with two anchor points, one on the foot end and one at the head, but if there is wind it's gonna move. I am planning on using it for South West desert camping and I think it will do fine.

Lowa Banff Pro Backpacking Boot - Men's

Lowa Banff Pro Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2009

These boots are of the best quality. I broke these in with about 30 miles. I treated them with Nikwax waterproofing and I found out how waterproof they are. On a 5 day backpacking trip in the Andes, the first couple of days were very wet. The feet stayed dry the whole time even when a wrong step dunked a boot up to the ankle, no moisture inside. The Banff has a leather lining and is very soft and molds right to the foot. The lacing system is great and I could get a very snug fit without cutting off any circulation. The Banff does'nt use a lot of high tech materials like some others trying to push some mechanical sounding suspension system it just uses very fine grade leather and traditional engineering. These are a little heavy but they are durable and you can carry a good amount of weight because these are not hikers they are for backpacking. Comfort is number one for me and I have not been let down by these even after a couple of hundred miles. True to size also, and Lowa runs for narrow feet.

Great Hikers

Lowa Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boot - Men's

Lowa Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2009

These are great boots for fast and light hiking on any trail. They grip well to any surface wet or dry. Comfort also comes in big with these even though a little help comes from "superfeet" greens. I was somewhat worried about the breathability of these boots because they are "waterproof" but I have yet to have any hotspots, so they breathe very well. The Renegades are not at all for packing any weight over 15 pounds, and thats pushing it, the support is just not there in the ankle or sole stability. Overall I use these for daily hikes and even a boots and utes run once in a while. True to size and somewhat for narrow feet.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2009

These runners take control when I put them on, they force me to take off running along any muddy trail I can find on a rainy day. Puddles are no threat to these bad boys. I am a size 10 in all shoes and a 10 in these are true to size. They grip and cusion well to any surface. The forefoot area of the sole is not shielded well from rocks so you will feel a poke if you roll over a pointed one. Pronation seemed to be inhibited but not as much as a shoe designed for just that. When it is warm and dry out my feet did heat up quite a bit, and when it's hot out your feet will feel as if they were on fire. The lacing system and cusioning system are both very nice. These shoes are great and reliable for wet weather and sloppy trail running.

The North Face Cat's Meow Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Climashield Prism

Rating for this product: 5 February 18, 2009

Perfect bag at a very fair price. You ever buy something and think the price is too high for the value? Well not this Cat’s Meow. I have been using this bag for over a year now and it performs perfect from the Sierras to the Andes, even in a pretty nasty hotel where there was no way I was climbing in between the sheets of the bed. Last spring I was caught out in a very cold 5 degree night, even with fleece top and bottoms on I felt the cold, part of the fun is having to suck some up once in awhile. A few other nights I experienced a low of 15 and I was fine, I do run a bit warm and I eat right before going to sleep. At around 40 degrees it does get a bit warm.
Overall this bag is comfortable, sturdy, well made, priced well, and does what it is supposed to do.

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 2, 2009

Now this is the jacket I have been looking for my entire life, you know what I mean. The Sharp Point is soft, stretchy, windproof, and looks good. The insulation is perfect with a base layer for weather in the 30’s. When I go running on 30 degree mornings I wear a long sleeve merino zip collar and use the pit zips and front zip to regulate heat. When fast hiking there is no moisture buildup, but when sweating profusely there will be some. I dont think I would go skiing or out in a downpour of rain, but it is definitely water resistant and windproof. I am 511 at 195lbs and broad shoulders and a large fits perfect with a little room to grow. I dont want to see summer this year because it means I will have to stop wearing this jacket.

Great jacket...but I needed more fleece!

Marmot Super Hero Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Super Hero Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2008

I like Marmot goods and this jacket was of very good quality. The Super Hero is a light weight jacket without much lining so it allows for better layering and breathability. The hood tucked away well so the collar was still comfortable. There is reinforcement on the shoulders and the top portion of the sleeves. Inside the jacket there is a light fleece lining sewn in ONLY underneath the areas of reinforcement.
I needed a jacket which I wasn't going to layer a lot so I chose to exchange the Super Hero for the Sharp Point which is fully lined with a light fleece. I have a 44 chest, 16 neck, and a 35 sleeve but broad shoulders and both of these jackets fit the same. Snug with enough room for layering and comfortable movement.
Did I mention these jackets are of very good quality and design?
