Pros and Cons Over a Tent

Rating for this product: 4 December 3, 2009

I'll start with the pros. It's lighter than the average tent, and it packs much better than a tent. It is quicker to set up than a tent. You can usually find a campsite in the woods much easier for a hammock than for a tent. In the summer, you can save extra space and weight by not having to bringing a Thermarest, and in the winter you can save weight and space by not bringing the bugnet. I also think that it is more comfortable than sleeping on the ground.
Now for the cons. It is harder to stay warm in the winter, because you don't have the insulation of the ground, the cold air just surrounds you in a hammock.(For this reason, I recommend bringing your Thermarest in the hammock with you to help add some insulation in cold temperatures.) You definitely can not stay as dry in the rain and the fog in this system as you can in a tent. The wind is much more of a factor when you're swinging in the air than on the ground in a tent. And if you like to toss and turn in your sleep, you will defiantly feel more restricted sleeping in a hammock. And clearly you are limited to camping in an area with trees to hang from.
So the bottom line is: This is a great three season system for mostly dry weather, But I would take a tent for extremely cold, wet, or windy conditions.

Dry clothes are NOT overrated!

Outdoor Research AirPurge Dry Compression Sack

Outdoor Research AirPurge Dry Compression Sack

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2009

I have a OR sack very similar to this one, and it is absolutely fabulous! The ability to stuff your clothes in this sack and compress it and leave it out in the rain, and in the morning, when you are wet and freezing cold, to be able to pull out a dry shirt, when everything else that you have is soaking wet, is a feeling that you can't put a price on. This is a must have piece of gear if you have ever had to backpack in the rain.

A Tiny Little Beast!

Brunton Raptor Stove

Brunton Raptor Stove

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2009

Man, this stove rocks! I used this thing for a three day backpacking trip and I fell in love with it. I boiled water for two breakfasts, and two suppers for two guys and I don't think I even used half of a 8oz. can. The stove is sooo light and small too! I don't know how it does in extreme altitude, and extreme cold, but it didn't flinch in windy, upper thirty's conditions. If you need a lite, easy to use backpacking stove, look no further!

Sea To Summit X-Bowl Collapsable Bowl

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

This thing is durable, packs small, and is easy to clean. It might be slightly heavier than some other option, but it's worth the extra half ounce. If you need a backpacking bowl that will last forever, get the X-Bowl!

Good Shirt

The North Face Trailhead Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Trailhead Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 3, 2009

I bought the Indian clay red shirt; I am 6'2", 150lbs. and the large fits fine. It is an all around good shirt. It is well made, durable, and comfortable. I have two criticisms of this shirt though: #1 They could amp up the graphics just a bit, Throw a logo on the front or something to make the look a little more striking. #2 The biggest complaint about it though is the price. Thirty-eight bucks is way too much for the shirt; if they knocked the price down about twenty bucks, they would sell twice as many. I bought it when it was on sale and I had a credit at Backcountry.com. All and all, I don't think you would be disappointed in the performance this shirt, just get it when it on sale.

Impressive Quality at a Great Price

The North Face Ligero 50 Backpack - 3050-3350cu in

The North Face Ligero 50 Backpack - 3050-3350cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2009

I bought the gunnison green 50L pack and I have used it on several fairly short hikes
with small loads and I am very impressed. Though I haven't been on a backpacking trip with it yet, I was able to fit a two-man tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, light jacket, and an extra change of clothes in it without it exploding.(but just barely) Because of the gear bungees on the sides of the pack, you can easily tie some of your gear on the outside to free up space on the inside. I'm sure if I packed lite, I would have room for a two or three day backpack trip. Even though I haven't been on a trip with it fully loaded, I have worn it around the house with it filled up and it is extremely comfortable. There are ample adjustments on it so that you can really make it fit your body. All the zippers are strong, and the material is thick and durable. I like the design of all the compartments.
If I could change one thing about this pack, I would make the water bottle pockets out of a more elastic material. It pushes in on the pack when you put a Nalgeen in them and it makes the inside smaller. If the inside is packed tight and you pull out your bottle, you have to struggle to get it back in without removing something from the main compartment. Other than than that, I have no complaints about it. I would recommend getting the 55L model if you need it for several day trips to give you a little more room. All in all, it is an excellent pack at an unbeatable price.

Mountain Hardwear Wicked Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 8, 2009

I absolutely LOVE this shirt. It looks great, and it feels even better. It does, however snag easily; and it does soak up body odor rather quickly. It is still a great shirt, and I wear it all the time. I would recommend this shirt to anyone who doesn't spent all the time walking through briers.

Love the Cool Features

The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant - Men's

The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2008

I bought these pants several months ago and I absolutely LOVE them. The material is tough but comfortable. They don't pack quite a small as my other North Face pants (The North Face Horizon convertable pants), But they are thicker than my other ones. I love the built-in belt, which saves weight and space by not having to carry a separate belt. It does still have durable belt loops, which allows you to hang stuff from your waist. The pockets are well designed to handle all your carry-ons. The zip off leg are a great too. These pants are wonderful, and I would recommend them to anyone.

A Steal for 20 Bucks

Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 November 17, 2008

Ok, so your not going to be spotlighting out of a helicopter with it, but it is plenty bright to see around your campsite at night with it. It's lite-weight and durable, so I always carry it with me. I do like the fact that it runs on two AAA batteries, which are lite and store easy if you need to pack some extra batteries. For twenty bucks, I don't see how you can beat it.

Teva Toachi Sandals - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2008

These Tevas are just awesome! They are without a doubt the best designed sandals I have ever seen. I wear these all the time; they are extremely comfortable. The Toachi has excelled at every situation I have had them in. The soles are very grippy on dry and wet ground. The toe guards should be on every sandal made. They have saved my big toes many times. the buckle makes them easy to take on and off. I HIGHLY recommend these sandals. I would give them twenty stars if I could.
