Montane North Star Down Jacket - Men's

Montane North Star Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2012

This fits me better than any puffy I've ever had. At 6' 172lbs the size Large fits more like a Medium-Tall than a normal Large. Very streamlined and svelte. The waist cinch and hem cinch really let you dial in the fit.

Montane overstuffed the baffles in this thing with 800+ fill down...200 grams total. That's more than the Patagonia Fitz Roy. You never have to worry about cold spots since the down can't shift anywhere in the microbaffles and if you compress any of the baffles they immediately pop right back since they are so stuffed with down.

The hood is fantastic. Velcro in the back, cinches on the sides, wire brim, and it zips up to your nose with soft material on your face.

The only thing I would tweak about this jacket is to put fleece lining in the pockets to make them that much more comfortable.

Mine comes in at just under 19 ounces on my postal scale. This thing packs a lot of warmth for that little weight!

As far as warmth...much warmer than the Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody, warmer than the Marmot Ama Dablan, almost as warm as the Marmot Guides Down Hoody but much lighter and not as bulky, not quite as warm as the Patagonia Fitz Roy but lighter and not anywhere close to as puffy-huge.

I've taken this winter camping, as a just-in-case insulation layer for snowshoeing, and worn it around town on extra cold days. It has performed flawlessly and I couldn't be more pleased!

Liberty Bottle Works Straight Up Collection Water Bottle - 32oz

Picked a few up on SAC for winter camping. They are light but sturdy. I really like the lid design...simple 1/2-twist click to open/close. It seals well, I didn't hesitate to stash it in my sleeping bag.

American made, recycled, simple and elegant design...didn't know what to expect when I ordered them but I have been very pleasantly surprised.

Backcountry.com Luft 800 Down Sweater - Men's

January 30, 2009

It close in the fact that it is down and the 800 fill. It is not as light and thin as the Patagonia down sweater. It is not as compressible either but is going to be warmer for sure. It actually compresses very well. I stuck it in the bottom of my compression sack with my sleeping bag and it fit just fine.I've got the Zeus and saw the Luft at the Backcountry store. They are very different jackets. The Luft is absolutely stuffed with 800 fill in a baffled design making it incredibly warm. The Zeus has a lot less of the 800 fill down with slightly lighter shell material in a sewn-through design making it very light (under a pound...about 14 ounces) and more compressible but not as warm. Both are incredible jackets designed for different purposes.

Excellent

Lafuma Pro 950 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Lafuma Pro 950 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2008

This is an excellent sleeping bag. It is extremely light, stuffs and compresses very small, and is very comfortable and warm. I tried it out on a night dipping into the 20s and was plenty warm. The material is soft and the down fluffs up like crazy making the bag very nice to slide into. They only had the long and I was concerned it might be a little big but it almost feels like a regular since the down fluffs up so much and I'm not complaining about having just a little extra room. I also really like the 3/4 (almost full length) zipper. It has a down-filled draft tube and stiff flaps on the inside to guide it and protect it from snags. We got a right zip and left zip and they zip together nicely. I can't say enough about this sleeping bag...pure warm lightweight fluffy downy goodness!!

Lafuma Warm'n Light 600 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2008

This bag is incredibly light and packs down very, very small. I needed thermals and a hat and socks to get comfortable at just under 40 degrees but I have no doubt it will keep me plenty warm at the usual 50-60 degree summertime lows. The price is excellent and the tiny size and super light weight makes this an excellent choice for warm weather.

Great lightweight jacket

The North Face Zot Windstopper Jacket - Men's

The North Face Zot Windstopper Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 10, 2008

I was surprised to find that most of the back panel (everything below shoulder level) is Apex Aerobic (the gray stuff). Having said that, the design is actually better for my uses. The Apex stuff is still quite wind resistant but it wicks and breathes a lot better so if you break a little sweat (especially with a pack on) it will let the moisture out a lot easier. The wind stopping abilities don't take that much of a hit either. I took it out on my motorcycle on a chilly morning and at 45mph with the jacket zipped up and the cuffs and hem cinched it cut right through the wind with no problems. Pair this up with a light fleece and I've got my layering combo for cool weather hiking!

injinji Performance Glove - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

I got these for my wife and she loves them. They are very light and thin but still cut through the wind and the cold for early morning runs. If you get too warm you can easily stash them since they compact down to almost nothing. The reflectors and grippy palms are a nice touch. Very well designed and very well made.

Sugoi Versa Jacket - Women's

Sugoi Versa Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

I got this for my wife and she loves it! The jacket is very light and the material is soft, flexible, and comfortable...perfect for running. It cuts right through the wind and takes the edge off the cold. The removable sleeves are well designed. The two-way zippers on the sleeves makes it so you can partially unzip them like pit-zips for extra ventilation if it's not warm enough to completely remove them. Overall a great jacket!

The North Face Zot Windstopper Jacket - Men's

September 10, 2008

Yes...for the most part. The Zot is essentially a hood-less version of the Cipher but they are still just a little different. The Zot has Windstopper in the front, on top of the arms, and along the upper back areas and Apex Aerobic fabric under the arms and throughout all of the mid and lower back. The Cipher is similar but includes sections of Windstopper in the mid and lower back.

The Denali is thick heavyweight fleece so it's super-warm but not windproof. This is a completely windproof softshell jacket with a fleece lining. It's not as warm but protects better against wind and rain.

Lorpen Merino Light Hiker Shorty Sock

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2008

Totally digging these socks. They are soft with all of the benefits of wool. Nice and padded on the bottom with good ventilation on the top. The lycra across the top helps the sock fit snugly and really hold its shape well. Love 'em!
