Montrail Mountain Masochist OutDry Shoe - Women's

Montrail Mountain Masochist OutDry Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 15, 2012

I am not at all surprised how good these shoes are, given my experience with Montrail. Got them for the girl, she also tried on the Montrail Sabino GTX, Vasque Mindbender GTX, and Keen Tryon WP. She liked these the best for her slightly wide feet, and they were more "running shoe" than the heavier Keen and Sabino. The mindbenders were too narrow. She loves them for running in the snow, slush, and various crud. Love the aggressive tread. Paired with some wool socks you are going to stay warm and dry in these.

Marmot Mica Jacket - Men's

Marmot Mica Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 15, 2012

I guess this has been reborn in the Super Mica, but wanted to drop some praise for an incredibly light, totally downpour-proof jacket. This thing has kept me super dry and is long enough for my monkey arms and abnormally long torso (6'0", got a medium). Packs down so small it is perfect for backpacking. I've also kept it in my pocket during outdoor concerts and oh man is it satisfying to be the smug dry guy.

Royal Robbins Cole 1/4-Zip Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 16, 2011

This is a nice heavy sweater, and it has a bit of texture which I like. It is slightly scratchy and the care tag says hand wash cold, lay flat to dry. Are you serious Royal Robbins? For 16% wool? I was annoyed when I noticed that.

The torso fits fairly regular, and this is a soft fleece, but the sleeves are way too big for my gangly arms. They are nice and long, but you're gonna need some tree trunks to fill them out. It's like a normal fleece with monk sleeves attached.

Looks good, feels thin

Patagonia Footwear Cardon Shoe - Men's

Patagonia Footwear Cardon Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 11, 2010

When I first got these shoes, they seemed to run small and were very stiff. It took a while, maybe two weeks, for them to break now. Now they feel great. The honeycomb pattern on the sole is not flat, but a little convex, so they don't provide much (if any) support. I have found that they also pick up dirt or snow in the holes and basically lose all their traction when that happens. But they really are a casual, good-weather shoe so I'll give them four stars for look and comfort during travel (minimal walking) or in the office.

Stoic Merino 200 Bottom - 3/4-Length - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 22, 2010

I am 6'0" and these are just not long enough. Like another reviewer said, they start to ride up at my knees almost immediately. Otherwise the fit and feel are great. I just don't want to spend a day skiing with these things balled up in my kneepits. If you are a little shorter then they're probably great.

Royal Robbins Klamath 1/4-Zip Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 22, 2010

This is a really nice sweater for casual wear. It is a fairly slim fit, I am skinny 6'0" and the medium is just right. Arms are long enough and it's not too boxy in the midsection. It is heavier than I thought, nice and warm and sharp looking. I am taking away one star because despite its warmth it really lets the wind go right through it. It's also machine washable but hang dry only.

Montane Oryx Fleece Jacket - Men's

Montane Oryx Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 24, 2010

This makes a great layer because it is thin and breathes well, but I'm sending it back because I want more of an all-purpose fleece. I'm 6'0" and thin, and the arms are a good length but i wish it were a little longer in front. The back length is longer and fine. Since I am unlikely to wear this as an outer layer in cool weather I'm going to find something else.

Also, the black fleece has an embroidered montane logo just like the detail picture of the blue one. The picture of the black version shown above is not really accurate.

KEEN Targhee ll Mid Hiking Shoe - Women's

KEEN Targhee ll Mid Hiking Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2010

Got these for the girlfriend who has to wear custom orthotic footbeds. Low boots tend to have zero ankle support after putting the footbed in. She went through many pairs before settling on these. She loves the great ankle support and there is zero heel slip, even with a footbed that fits her wide foot. No breakin period or blisters. Mud and waterproof. Finding footwear for special feet can be a chore but these save the day!

Patagonia Continental Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 5, 2010

Loving these pants. The roomy crotch is great. One of the thigh pockets is velcro and the other is zippered, though the zipper pull is a little too small. Length is good and the flared leg openings fit over whatever boots you might be wearing. The material is really soft, so the waist is not too bulky and is fine wearing a heavy pack.

Too long, too wide

NRS Hydroskin Socks

NRS Hydroskin Socks

Rating for this product: 2 July 20, 2010

These feel like they would really do the trick if only they fit me. I have medium to narrow feet, skinny in the cankle. These socks are just not elastic enough to fit a wide range of foot sizes. I wear a men's 10 and the large was too long. The medium was OK in length, but the heel and ankle were a little loose.

If you have beefy feet you should have no problem, but even so you should probably order a size down. With BC's return policy you might as well order two pairs just to be sure.

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

Rating for this product: 4 July 18, 2010

These are super dextrous, the leather is nice and soft. Keep in mind that they will pack down a bit after a bit of use. I love the white color. The short cuffs have not been a problem so far because even the end stay fairly tight on my wrists.

They are warm enough for me down to about 30F with Mammoth wind, and below that I pair them with the Hestra merino liner glove. With the liner my hands are always warm. (however the liners fell apart after about 10 days... that's a different story)

I am taking away a star because there are some loose thread ends coming out of the seams. Not a big deal since I scored them on tramdock, but if I paid full price for them I would be annoyed. I also wish there was a nose wipe...

CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Bite Valve - 1L

CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Bite Valve - 1L

Rating for this product: 2 July 18, 2010

I've used this bottle quite a bit and I'm not impressed. What am I supposed to use it for? For any active activity this doesn't cut it. Too heavy. Doesn't hold a lot of water. You have to hold it upright for the straw to work. Too many parts to clean. Can only suck out a little water at a time. Awkward to use one-handed.

I would rather go with an old-school pop-top bottle or a hydration pack. In my opinion camelbak just overthought this one. I guess it looks OK if you're trying to impress someone at the dog park or office, but once you get it on the trail you realize what a pain it is.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Folders

Eagle Creek Pack-It Folders

Rating for this product: 5 July 18, 2010

Took one of the 18" folders on a two-week trip to England and I was constantly putting dress shirts and pants in and out. I could get 3-4 shirts and a pair of khakis in there without straining it. The folding board has a diagram of how to fold your stuff, and since the clothes are sandwiched between the back of the folder and the board on top, they stay put and wrinkles are rare.

It's really nice to have all your nice clothes in a folder, because then you can just toss it in your luggage and not worry about cramming the bag full. Makes packing faster and easier. Didn't need an iron in two weeks.

Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad

Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 July 18, 2010

This is an awesome pad for the money. Packs smaller than my old self-inflating pad and is many times more comfortable. Its durability is obvious once you get your hands on it. It's kind of thick and crinkly nylon, so it's not quite as squishy as the BA clearview pad. Sometimes I feel like I'm sleeping on a big paper bag. But still a really great pad.

Big Agnes Clearview Air Pad

Big Agnes Clearview Air Pad

Rating for this product: 4 July 18, 2010

The plastic on this pad is a little bit stretchy, so it feels softer to me than other non-foam pads. It packs up smaller than my 3/4 length therm-a-rest and is MUCH more comfortable. I like the stickyness of it because it is less like to slide around. It can be a little loud if you are shuffling around, but that won't last long since it's so comfortable.

The heel strap slippage is for real

Salomon Tech Amphibian 2 Shoe - Men's

Salomon Tech Amphibian 2 Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 18, 2010

I really like these shoes. They fit true to size, and do pretty well with my narrow feet. The traction is good and I like the ventilation on a hot day.

If you look around at reviews at other sites, a lot of people are complaining that the heel strap slips through the buckle after a bit of walking. I found this to be true even when trying them on in a store. Maybe some people just don't notice wearing loose shoes. However there is an easy fix. I just put a rubber band tight on the free part of the strap up against the buckle and it holds them in place so far. I imagine Salomon will fix this for the next model.

After using these for a while, I can't go very far in them without socks. Anything hike longer than about a mile requires me to use some thin socks to prevent the blisties.

Smith Phenom Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 July 18, 2010

The optics and fit (helmet or not) are spot on for these goggles. I got the ignitor lens and I find it to be a little light for an all-around lens. On bluebird days I wish I had something darker. Sanuk Vagabond Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 1, 2010

These are nice and squishy, with a footbed like a really soft flip flop. But since it's a closed-toe shoe, you dont get that toe fatigue from holding a flip flop thong, and they are comfortable to walk long distances in. The canvas is stiff at first but loosens up. They can get a little clammy with no socks on, but not too bad. They also dry quickly if you get em wet. Awesome and true to size

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2010

Really like this pot. Comes with the primus grabber which is sturdy and light. Boils in no time. Check out the equivalent 1.7L pot for some reviews and a view of the heat exchanger. I am taking away one star because, like the other reviewer said, the lid is not really useful for anything. You might as well use a sheet of foil or anything flat.

Also, keep in mind that a side effect of the heat exchanger is that, once you turn the stove off, the contents of the pot will cool off fast in wind and cold conditions.

DAKINE Messenger Bag Small - 900cu in

DAKINE Messenger Bag Small - 900cu in

Rating for this product: 3 February 11, 2010

Using this bag for work and travel, and I like it. The main compartment is surprisingly big, enough for a few binders or a change of clothes. Lots of little pockets, padded iphone pocket, external water bottle pocket. But I have two problems: 1. When the main compartment is empty, the bag is really loose and floppy, and doesnt retain its shape--instead the flap hangs with the handle pointing sideways instead of up. 2. The bag looks RIDICULOUS if you carry it by the handle, even if the bag is full. Since the handle is only attached to the flap, the flap gets yanked up from the bag. The flap clips are midway up the flap, so the bottom of the flap below them sticks out and the whole thing looks all creased and wrinkled. They could've fixed it by having the handle attached to the main bag through a hole in the flap.... maybe next year's model....

Demon Snow Flex Force Low Armor

Rating for this product: 4 December 15, 2009

I tried a few impact shorts and these things blow them out of the water. Really it comes down to tailbone protection. These shorts have a tough tailbone pad that extends ABOVE the drawstring waistline, so it actually covers your tailbone. The other shorts I've tried only protect below the waist. The thighs are mesh and don't get hot. I'm taking off one star because the cloth under the drawstring is kind of rough against the skin. I'm a 30" waist and a small fit great.

I had to buy a duplicate pair of Wilburs when my first started to get worn out after about two years. They have a suede-y kind of footbed at first, but after a couple months of wear you're left with a nice smooth footbed. The strap is set rather far inside the arch of your foot, so it provides a bit of arch support that is rare among flip flops. This is a classic design from Reef so there's no situtation where they look out of place. Get on it.

This helmet doesn't really have any adjustments, and instead of vents that open/close it comes with some little foam sheets that you stick into the vents. Pretty sure I already lost mine. Anyway, it's good at keeping a stable temperature and blocking the wind. If it fits you right out of the box then it's great. Otherwise you'll have to return it.

Rossignol Zenith Pro Composite Boot

Rossignol Zenith Pro Composite Boot

Rating for this product: 4 February 23, 2009

This is a great boot for people with low-volume (narrow, skinny) feet like myself. It is rated at something like 100 flex but is actually pretty soft. The one complaint I have is that the shell can scratch the top and bottom of my foot getting in and out. It's a narrow boot so entry/exit is a bit of an ordeal.

Electric EG2 Goggle

January 10, 2009

yes, the mirror finish is only when viewed from the outside. look at the last picture in the bottom row and you can see that the lens has a rose tint when you are looking through it. that helps to increase contrast

Ahnu Bridge Shoe - Men's

Ahnu Bridge Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 4, 2009

I had high hopes for these shoes, needed something I could slip in and out of at work. Like another reviewer said, the back of the shoe is high and stiff, so it has been rubbing uncomfortably on my Achilles for the first week.

The weight and look are good, but my biggest complaint is that the footbed is basically a plastic foam, so if you try to wear them without socks it's sticky and your feet will start to sweat.

Goodbye canvas

Reef Magda Sandal - Men's

Reef Magda Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 4, 2009

I've gone through quite a few pairs of Reefs, and the sizing and comfort is about the same in all of them. These are great too. Just don't be surprised that the canvas starts coming off of these once you've worn them for a few months. The black sole starts showing through. Gives them a nice worn-in look if that's what you're looking for.

January 1, 2009

Anyone used this bag for air travel? I'm wondering how easily it will fit into an overhead bin.
