Vasque Opportunist Hiking Shoe - Men's

Vasque Opportunist Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 10, 2010

Haven't gotten to give them a very good run yet but so far so good. Solid construction, easy on the eyes, very well ventilated, and (most importantly) probably the most comfortable shoes I've ever put on. I would highly recommend. Durability remains to be seen but mine are about to get a very good test in a few weeks.

Functional, saw does great work. Lightweight but heavy where it needs to be. But I am very disappointed with the fit and finish... mine was very poorly made.

My Best Purchase!!!

Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2010

Love love love the Jetboil! The best backpacking purchase I've ever made, especially with the java kit. I can cook gourmet meals in this thing. Only two things keep me from giving it 6 stars: 1) can't simmer very easily in this... I just switch back in forth between off and low... but it is made for boiling water so I expected this; 2) backcountry.com doesn't allow 6 stars. Buy one!

Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Cork Trekking Pole

Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Cork Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2010

Got these, use these, love these. However I should caution... compare the weight of these to other trekking poles because you're not gaining any weight savings by buying carbon. The only reason I bought carbon is because I want to know I have some of the best gear I can get.

Osprey Packs Atmos 65 Backpack - 3800-4200cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2010

What else can be said that hasn't already been said? Love this pack! One thing I would caution is that I don't think this pack would work well on folks with a large frame, keep this in mind while shopping for backpacks.

So far so good...

Millet Radikal Rock Boot - Men's

Millet Radikal Rock Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2010

Let me start by saying that I base my review strictly on getting these in and trying them on, wearing them around for a while... I haven't yet taken them out and used them in the field (with this in mind I'd rather not have to give stars yet but oh well). I'm only giving this review because no one has offered a review on these yet.

The overall construction of these boots seem to be very good. Its obvious that they'll hold up quite well even considering the punishment they're about to take. The BOA system, which I was initially leery of, seems to work quite well. My initial concerns were in regards to how well the tension would distribute but I've discovered that the key is to tighten them, walk or flex your ankles some, then tighten some more... keep doing this until they get tight enough to suit you. If you're concerned about the strength of the cable don't be, its not going anywhere. These things are rather light for their purpose, no complaints there. They're probably a little more rigid than I was expecting (which is fine with me) but this may not be for everyone. Overall I would say they're a decent deal at the Department of Goods price and an absolute steal at the SAC price. I'm very pleased... but again I caution I haven't given them a true workout yet.

Osprey Packs Atmos 35 Overnight Backpack - 1900-2300 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2010

Great backpack! Bought mine for weekends but pretty sure I could go a week on this pack. Very rugged, very well designed, and if I didn't know better I'd swear it was bigger than 35L. Would definitely recommend.

Wouldn't expect less from Osprey

Osprey Packs Hydraform Hydration Reservoir

Osprey Packs Hydraform Hydration Reservoir

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2010

Not a whole lot to say other than there's a HUGE difference between a cheap bladder and a good bladder. Very rugged, very solid, you can tell a lot of thought was put into the design. I actually put my 3L Hydraform (filled with only 2L) in the Airspeed on my Osprey Atmos 35 and it works great. No complaints really. Perfect complement to any Osprey pack.

Uber nice

ALPS Mountaineering Lightweight Series Air Pad

ALPS Mountaineering Lightweight Series Air Pad

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2010

Great pad for the money, very good construction. Used a comparable Thermarest a few weeks back and really could tell no difference (other than the price and and the fact that this one is built better). I like that brass threads were used instead of plastic, should hold up way better. The self-inflating feature works great if you just roll it out, open the valve, and let it sit for a few mins... every time I did this I only had to put an extra two breaths in and we were good. I like the way it comes with the patch kit just in case you get a puncture in the wilderness... met an AT thru-hiker a few weeks back that had to wake up every hour and reinflate his sleeping pad that would have loved this feature. The only negative I can think of is the sack that it stores in is loose... I really wish it had compression straps to it or something. Overall a wonderful pad that I would highly recommend, especially if spotted on SAC.

Great bag, very impressed

ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2010

Pros: Great compression sack, compresses fairly well for a cheaper bag, light (I know there's lighter bags out there but show me one for the money), I thought it did an admirable job of keeping warm (didn't come close to touching 20 degrees but I think this bag might hold it's own), lots of other good positives.

Cons: Its a tad bit tight (which also can be considered a "pro" since it holds in the heat great)... that's it.

I would highly recommend this bag, especially if it's spotted on SAC.
