Deuter Aircontact 75+10 Pack - 5200cu in
April 21, 2011
Dusty, this pack sounds like a great fit for your 10-14 day trek. AT weather conditions this time of year are pretty awesome, but storms pop out of nowhere so detachable rain cover is a big bonus. These packs have lots of adjustments so you should be able to get a pretty solid fit. However the frame is set to accomadate all sizes so the straps will require some personal tweaks for sure. A safe bet for a good pack.

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight
April 2, 2011
Antoni, no no no on diving, this light wouldn't even survive a shower! Diving lights are actually a special beast that need to be designated for diving. A "waterproof" or "weatherproof" light does not mean dive rated. Pressure at depth makes a big difference and a great waterproof light will still not be sufficient for any real diving. Static tests (no movement or operation of switches) are used to rate lights on water resistance, but diving is not a static activity. My email address is on my profile page if you or anyone wants more information.

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight
April 2, 2011
Angie, incandescent bulbs burn out very easily. The filament doesn't always appeary broken like you might see in an old light bulb. If you changed the batteries and it doesn't work there are only a few explantions.
1) batteries are in the wrong orientation, double check
2) bulb is burned out, need a new bulb
3) electrical issue, water or corrosive battery acid has damaged circuitry, flashlight is now garbage
My suggestion, the bulb is not worth the money to replace it. Buy a new LED light that has at least 3 watts and you will never need to replace a bulb again. Additionally, you will have increased battery life and it will be much lighter and smaller.

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight
April 2, 2011
Greg, don't buy this light or a Maglite. They are really not good lights. Maglite is better because they've moved on to LED technology, but still they are using reputation and not technology. As far as "7 watt" don't let that fool you into being impressed. 7 watt incandescent is very weak. 7 watt LED would be very very bright. If you want a good security light I have many suggestions for you none of which are available through BC. You or anyone else can email me personally if you want information or suggestions on lights. I want to make it clear I do not sell flashlights! It's just a hobby I take very seriously and don't want people wasting money on old technology. BC you can email me too if you want some suggestions for improving your light inventory.

Rab Photon Insulated Pant - Men's
January 10, 2011
Kristoffer.. I own the Rab Microlight Down Jacket (deceivingly light jacket yet incredibly warm). Based on the jacket, I know these are solid pants, however the jacket has down not primaloft (synthetic fill). These pants do use pertex as the nylon shell which is a very strong light material. I suspect they would be perfect under your Beta AR's, but exact sizing I am not sure how their pants run. I am 5'8 155 and a medium top is ideal. I think a large would work but a medium might be better if you're wearing these under something and the tighter they are the warmer you'll be. Likely medium is the size for the 450/16 ounce reference. The zipper is probably not a YKK, I have not had any issues with the zipper on my jacket. These are perfect pants for midlayering in cold conditions under your shell. Rab is breaking into the US market now and I think the good buzz is just beginning, a great company finally getting international recognition.

Norrøna Lyngen Lightweight Down Jacket - Men's
January 3, 2011
James, the nylon is water-resistant but certainly not waterproof. These down jackets/sweaters are ideal for keeping warm in cold dry conditions. This jacket should however be windproof, as the down combined with the "polyamide" (or any synthetic shell-type material) will keep out the wind. If you're going to be using this in wet weather or while it's snowing make sure you have a shell to wear over it. Wet down is worthless so avoid the issue by rocking your shell if wetness is in the forecast.

Marmot Greenland Baffled Down Jacket - Men's
December 27, 2010
Cad3040163.. yes good news I am 5'8 155 also with a 14 & 1/2 inch neck. Medium is your best bet. I own a medium in most of my winter jackets and my TNF down jacket is a medium and the neck is great. My buddy has a Marmot down jacket and I tried it on they fit very similar, but Marmot is nicer in my opinion. Go medium and enjoy, sick jacket!

Suunto X10 Watch
December 8, 2010
Julianndivergirl83
This watch like many others that claims waterproof to a certain number of feet like 330, is a test more in theory than in practice. The test is conducted in static conditions, thus no movement of buttons or any changes in water currents etc.. It would not be gaunteed to work under fluid conditions at that depth and honestly after my experience with the X9 highly unlikely this would even survive a static test at 50ft. The cheap glue holding the face plate on is not exactly dive rated. This is an expensive toy not for any serious adventures or diving!

Seirus Xtreme All Weather Glove
November 1, 2009
Chris, yes these are ideal for the activities you are describing. They are not bulky at all, I would say compression type glove really. I actually got a small and I usually wear a medium in other gloves. They fit great, and the water beads off if you run them under the sink. I would not use them as my primary winter deep-snow glove, but they are perfect for almost all "normal" winter or wet weather activities.

Sea To Summit Compression Sack
June 18, 2009
Eldad, Angus is correct in the true defintion of waterproof, but the material is nylon/cordura thus the actual material is waterproof to an extent, but the top is not closed like the eVent dry sack made by Sea to Summit. So if you were to dunk this or let it sit out in a storm you might have some issues. If this is in you pack while its raining, no worries your stuff will stay dry.

The North Face Padda Amphibious Shoe - Men's
June 17, 2009
Matt, yes these are ideal for any water based trekking, but the only issue is hiking long distances or carrying heavy loads in your pack. If you are doing either of those things then these might be great transition shoes, but you will definitely want some designated hiking shoes for heavier loads and long ascents. Otherwise no pack or light pack and just wandering around near camp, you have found yourself a great shoe

Hydro Photon Water Bottle Pre-Filter
June 15, 2009
Not a dumb question perfectly fine... The filter should last a very long time. You really cant put a finite time frame on it. It is analgous to a metal coffee filter that you use over and over again. Really as long as you clean it from buildup and dont break the micron screen this will outlast most of your other gear

Brunton Lamplight - Extendible LED Flashlight
June 8, 2009
Candle power is a little bit of a dated term in the flashlight world. More accurately is a term called lumens. A simple analogy between candle power and lumens is as follows: if you were to pour out a bag of sugar on a table the peak of the mound would be candle power and the overal amount poured would be lumens. So to answer your question candle power and lumens are not interchangeable, but related. This light probably has about 20-30 lumens. However, candle power for this light is not an accurate measure of true ouput becuase if you are within a few feet the beam is very bright and concenterated, but as you move away to say even 20 feet your candle power will be much less.
For comparison sake, remember the old incandescent 3 cell Maglite. This had about 20,000 candle power and about 40-60 lumens.
One last note, unlike the old incandescent lights, this is an LED which has a perfect beam, no artifacts, and does not have the O-ring in the middle or anything like the days of the incandescents and poor reflectors.

Adventure Medical Ben's 30% Deet Home & Field Pack Tick & Insect Repellant
April 25, 2009
Hey Steve, I cannot give you an exact answer, but the small bottle has 37 mL, given the average spray is about 0.2 mL you should get at least 185 sprays. That should last for the duration of any weekend trip for you and some buddies. The larger container you can use to refill, I have still had my little bottle for some time without needing refilling. Bottom line, the small bottle will last a long time!

Patagonia Stretch Element Jacket - Men's
April 25, 2009
I agree with Brian, this jacket is cut very slim/athletic, so if you plan on doing serious layering you might want to go up a size if you are close to being a large without layering. I am only 5'8 155 and the medium is snug around the chest and shoulders, but the fit is perfect for me with minimal layering. A really good picture of the fit of this jacket is on the Patagonia website with someone wearing it.

Petzl Ultra Headlamp
March 30, 2009
Not waterproof or even water-resistant at this price? I am not sure how this even made it past marketing. Yes 350 lumens is amazing for headlamp standards, but I would hold off, I promise there will be a light as bright if not brighter within the year that is water-resistant and probably will cost about the same.

Brunton L5 Headlamp
March 30, 2009
Hey greg, There are 4 settings Hi ~ 80-100 lumens.. Med ~ 45-60.. Low ~ 10-20, and strobe ~ 80. These are just estimates! I did not use any instrumentation or calculations these are simply personal estimates (I do own rated 220/30 lumen LED, 3,500 lumen HID, 60 lumen incandescent and many others!). The battery back lasts a very long time even at high setting. I have used it extensively and have not had an issue with step down voltage to conserve power. I am not sure what happend to Cowboy but other reviewers and gear junkies like myself did not experience these issues. The actual headlamp is 4 oz! Incredibly light no batteries on head or anything, the battery pack does come close to a pound, but you can put it on your belt or the belt that comes with the lamp. You wont need an additional battery pack! If you really wanted too (not be worth your time) you could modify this light and add a slightly more powerful LED and two battery packs, but not for the average joe. Now my only real critique is the housing of the battery pack it is not water-tight. So make sure you have it under your waterproof layer just in case, but the headlamp is water-resistant/easily survive rain and snow, not for scuba or diving! Hope that helps, honestly it is a pretty beast headlamp, if you find it on sale go for it you'll be stoked and your friends will be jealous.
