Patagonia Footwear Boaris Shoe - Men's

Patagonia Footwear Boaris Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2012

I wore these nearyl every day last year and now mix up the woredrobe a bit. But these still get a ton of use and they go well with shorts and jeans. Very versatile and true to size. I wear a 9 and they fit perfect. Durable (look new aside from stains) comfortable and attractive. Pretty much the shoe trifecta. I might by another pair soon for fear these will be unavailable at some point.

Smith Hudson Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Hudson Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 July 31, 2011

Great pair of lightweight polarized sunglasses at a good price. They are very small and thus fantastic for the small faces and tiny heads. My only gripe is the tightness or the fit above the ears. They narrow quite a bit thus they stay on the head securely and are great for sports, but after an hour of straight wearing you feel the pressue. Overall these are an excellent choice for an inexpensive pair of polarized light weight glasses designed for the narrow faced and tiny headed.

Stoic WPF Compression Sack - 3pk

Stoic WPF Compression Sack - 3pk

Rating for this product: 5 July 26, 2011

The combo pack is worth the money. These bags are fantastic for keeping your junks dry. Boating, kayaking, rain, whatever these are clutch. I use the smallest one most often as it rather large, but if you have a bigger load or your friends try to get in on your dryness the big one is money. The compression roll down and air valve system is superb for cutting down on excess bulk. I highly recommend if you need your stuff dry.

My new go to bag

Stoic Welded Haul Duffel

Stoic Welded Haul Duffel

Rating for this product: 5 July 26, 2011

While it's not a designated dry bag, it is very water resistant. Also it is durable, but not ultra durable. This is a great multi purpose duffel, but not for critical gear in the backcountry. Casual use around town and small trips it's the perfect bag. I use this on weekend trips to friends places to store clothes, beach trips, and really anything where i need to cram random stuff into a bag for a few days. I have the Large and it is mighty big. Holds shoes, towels, shirts, pants, frisbee, flashlights, etc.. no problem. A great bag, just make sure you know what to use it for.

Diggin it - perfect length for me

Stoic Overhang Short - Men's

Stoic Overhang Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 17, 2011

Just got these recently and the complaints about the length are what motivated to buy them. Being 5'8 with a normal size torso and shorter legs, most shorts end up looking like capris on me. These fit great. In fact they are even a little long when they slide down a bit. They come to the bottom of my knees and any lower would be silly looking. As far as waist goes the Mediumm is just right. No need for a belt but if I want one I can add it. These also can double as board shorts if you forgot your pair or you just like the style better than aggressive floral prints... we're not 19 forever.. A great short if you're a little on the shorter side and don't like shorts around mid-shin.

Analog Weston Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 21, 2011

These are awesome shorts. They are not as long as some of the others in the same market, but that is a good think for us shorter folk. I'm 5'8 and these things are perfect length, just around the knee cap, unlike many that look like baggy capris = weak sauce. So if you're 6'3 steer clear, but if you're a little shorter rock em they're money. High quality materials too, classy enough for meeting randoms and chill enough to wear every day.

Deuter Aircontact 75+10 Pack - 5200cu in

April 21, 2011

Dusty, this pack sounds like a great fit for your 10-14 day trek. AT weather conditions this time of year are pretty awesome, but storms pop out of nowhere so detachable rain cover is a big bonus. These packs have lots of adjustments so you should be able to get a pretty solid fit. However the frame is set to accomadate all sizes so the straps will require some personal tweaks for sure. A safe bet for a good pack.

Coal Considered Preston Hat

Coal Considered Preston Hat

Rating for this product: 5 April 5, 2011

I have a small head so finding a hat that looks great is tough. The short brim makes the hit and the materials are top notch. I got a medium and it fits pretty well, a little big at first, but after a short time in the dryer this thing molded to my head and it's a good looking 'classy' hat look. If you could wear a hat to dinner this is the one you'd want. Great for cold weather since it's wool it does get pretty toasty.

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight

April 2, 2011

Antoni, no no no on diving, this light wouldn't even survive a shower! Diving lights are actually a special beast that need to be designated for diving. A "waterproof" or "weatherproof" light does not mean dive rated. Pressure at depth makes a big difference and a great waterproof light will still not be sufficient for any real diving. Static tests (no movement or operation of switches) are used to rate lights on water resistance, but diving is not a static activity. My email address is on my profile page if you or anyone wants more information.

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight

April 2, 2011

Angie, incandescent bulbs burn out very easily. The filament doesn't always appeary broken like you might see in an old light bulb. If you changed the batteries and it doesn't work there are only a few explantions.

1) batteries are in the wrong orientation, double check
2) bulb is burned out, need a new bulb
3) electrical issue, water or corrosive battery acid has damaged circuitry, flashlight is now garbage

My suggestion, the bulb is not worth the money to replace it. Buy a new LED light that has at least 3 watts and you will never need to replace a bulb again. Additionally, you will have increased battery life and it will be much lighter and smaller.

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight

April 2, 2011

Greg, don't buy this light or a Maglite. They are really not good lights. Maglite is better because they've moved on to LED technology, but still they are using reputation and not technology. As far as "7 watt" don't let that fool you into being impressed. 7 watt incandescent is very weak. 7 watt LED would be very very bright. If you want a good security light I have many suggestions for you none of which are available through BC. You or anyone else can email me personally if you want information or suggestions on lights. I want to make it clear I do not sell flashlights! It's just a hobby I take very seriously and don't want people wasting money on old technology. BC you can email me too if you want some suggestions for improving your light inventory.

Not a good light

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight

Coleman Dual Action 4D WideBeam Flashlight

Rating for this product: 2 April 2, 2011

This is a clunky light using an incandescent bulb and 4D batteries, if it was 1995 then this would be a great light. This is heavy and provides mediocre light given it's size and weight. Not waterproof, not durable, not worth the shipping cost.

BC needs to seriously revamp their light vendors. I love BC, but the lighting, especically flashlight section, is terrible. Email me if you have any questions or would like good lighting suggestions. My email address is on my profile page.

Rating for this product: 3 April 2, 2011

Still lanterns are lagging behind the rest of the illumination world. This one is no exception. While Cree makes excellent LEDs this one is old old technology. Super comfy but very very long

The North Face TKA 100 Pant - Men's

The North Face TKA 100 Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 2, 2011

These are fleece pants. Basically they are sweat pants that aren't cotton so they're super soft and much lighter. Theses are prefect for lounging around on weekends and chilling at home, but not a high - performance piece of gear. They are too loose or 'relaxed fit' for anything technical, so if you're getting these for anything other than straight chilling you should look elsewhere. My only gripe and why 4/5 stars is the size. Inseam is quoted at 32" but that may even be less seems more like 33 - 34. They are very very long. I have a medium and I am 5'8 150 and these things are way too long on me. I have to role them up or just step on them if im not wearing boots. Unless you're at least 6' be prepared for the outrageous length, again only good if the couch is your primary objective. Overall comfort is unparalled for sweats, but the size leaves something to be desired.

Rab Photon Insulated Pant - Men's

January 10, 2011

Kristoffer.. I own the Rab Microlight Down Jacket (deceivingly light jacket yet incredibly warm). Based on the jacket, I know these are solid pants, however the jacket has down not primaloft (synthetic fill). These pants do use pertex as the nylon shell which is a very strong light material. I suspect they would be perfect under your Beta AR's, but exact sizing I am not sure how their pants run. I am 5'8 155 and a medium top is ideal. I think a large would work but a medium might be better if you're wearing these under something and the tighter they are the warmer you'll be. Likely medium is the size for the 450/16 ounce reference. The zipper is probably not a YKK, I have not had any issues with the zipper on my jacket. These are perfect pants for midlayering in cold conditions under your shell. Rab is breaking into the US market now and I think the good buzz is just beginning, a great company finally getting international recognition.

Norrøna Lyngen Lightweight Down Jacket - Men's

January 3, 2011

James, the nylon is water-resistant but certainly not waterproof. These down jackets/sweaters are ideal for keeping warm in cold dry conditions. This jacket should however be windproof, as the down combined with the "polyamide" (or any synthetic shell-type material) will keep out the wind. If you're going to be using this in wet weather or while it's snowing make sure you have a shell to wear over it. Wet down is worthless so avoid the issue by rocking your shell if wetness is in the forecast.

Hydro Photon Pre-Filter Replacement Cartridge

Hydro Photon Pre-Filter Replacement Cartridge

Rating for this product: 4 December 23, 2010

I'm not sure what Mr. Big's issue was. The pre-filter is a very simple design that eliminates the visible grit and sand that you find in stream water. It is not a suitable filter alone, hence a pre-filter that accompanies the Steripen. These (not this which is simply a replacement piece of the pre-filter) screw onto the top of a Nalgene bottle and work great for their purpose. A necessary addition if you're using a SteriPen.

Suunto X10 Watch

December 8, 2010

Julianndivergirl83

This watch like many others that claims waterproof to a certain number of feet like 330, is a test more in theory than in practice. The test is conducted in static conditions, thus no movement of buttons or any changes in water currents etc.. It would not be gaunteed to work under fluid conditions at that depth and honestly after my experience with the X9 highly unlikely this would even survive a static test at 50ft. The cheap glue holding the face plate on is not exactly dive rated. This is an expensive toy not for any serious adventures or diving!

It's a slick shirt, but it does run rather large. I am 5 ft 8 38-40 in chest and I bought a medium. It is a very long shirt, so not ideal for shorter torso/shorter people. Rating for this product: 5 November 28, 2009

You need a footprint with any tent. Silly if you don't factor the cost of the footprint into the total cost of the tent. In order to protect your tent from the jagged earth underneath you must buy a footprint that is designed for your tent. However, you can buy a generic tarp and use that instead, but the footprint weighs less and is custom tailored to your specific tent, and stays tethered with the tent stakes. A must have piece gear.

Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack - 4149-4638cu in

Rating for this product: 5 November 27, 2009

I used this pack for the first time in Shenandoah (east coast national park)in November with temperature range from 65 high to 35 low, with an excessive load just to test out the durabilty and weight distribution of this pack. Well it passed the test. I loaded about 50 + lbs worth of gear and it was nicely distributed. I am 5ft8, 150 and the M size was appropriate for my frame. I did need to adjust the straps to get the waist belt to the proper height on my hips. The amount of crap I stuffed into the pack was remarkable. Even with a 50lb + load I had nothing other than trekking poles dangling from outside the pack... pretty remarkable. I had a full 4 season tent with all accesories, pillow, sleeping pad/bag, trekking chair, and tarp in the main compartment. Overall this is a great pack, with personal adjustments needed for an ideal fit, but it will handle the loads and it will perform. It is a solid choice for the money.

Seirus Xtreme All Weather Glove

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

Dexterity is unparralled with these gloves. They are waterproof, however I would not use these as my primary glove in continuously freezing weather. They are snug and suggest sizing down to secure a tight fit. I usually wear medium in gloves, but these fit best as a small on me. I bought these for backcounty camping and daily use in eastern US winters. They are great for daily activity and cold stearing wheels on the way to work in the morning too. Overall much warmer and better than my "windproof" fleece gloves (now i no lnger use them) but not the substitute for my serious winter insulated gloves. For everything else in between these are the perfect gloves.

Sea To Summit Compression Sack

Eldad, Angus is correct in the true defintion of waterproof, but the material is nylon/cordura thus the actual material is waterproof to an extent, but the top is not closed like the eVent dry sack made by Sea to Summit. Sea To Summit Compression Sack

Sea To Summit Compression Sack

Rating for this product: 5 June 18, 2009

These bags are fantastic for maximizing space in your pack. I literally can squeeze a base layer (top and bottom), microfiber towel, rain gear (top and bottom), socks, boxers, and a fresh shirt all in a medium bag. Simply pull the straps tight and you can pack it all in, truly essential for pack space. Additionally, these are water resistant, so during a storm you wont have to fear about your fresh clothes gettind soaked. They are not submersible, and not waterproof like the eVent Sea to Summit sack, but the material is cordura and nylon so water cant get through. The only difference with these bags is they have no water tight seal at the top, but as long as you have the bag tightly compressed it is very unlikely any water can get in. Add this to the essential gear list, these give you tons of valuable space!

Rating for this product: 2 June 17, 2009

Do not waste your money or time on this headlamp. Simply outdated technology. It uses an incandescent bulb as the primary light source and has 3 dim cruddy LEDs. Incandescents first of all get very warm, eat batteries, filament can break, and cannot provide the light output of newer LED technology based on similar battery configurations. While at one point this light was relatively nice, it is archaic techonology.

Bottom line, go with a newer high-end LED headlmap. LEDs are much more efficient on all fronts and now LEDs exist that can out perform the once superior incandescent.

Hydro Photon Water Bottle Pre-Filter

Hydro Photon Water Bottle Pre-Filter

Rating for this product: 5 June 15, 2009

Just because you have a Steripen doesnt mean you will have clean-debris free water. This filter is essential, in fact it should come with the Steripen standard (that crucial). It screws on top of your wide mouth Nalgene bottle as you dip it into a stream lake etc... and the nasty silt sand etc... get stuck outside the filter and not inside the water you are about to zap with UVC light. Then as the water bottle is filled with untreated water pull out the mouthpiece portion while leaving the filter screwed into the Nalgene and add the Steripen then turn the Nalgene upside down and rotate for 90 seconds and blam fresh water without debris and killed microorganisms. The one thing this and the Steripen do not do is eliminate color from the water. So hopefully that dosent bother you, but most streams and lakes you get pretty clear water anyway.

Brunton Lamplight - Extendible LED Flashlight

June 8, 2009

Candle power is a little bit of a dated term in the flashlight world. More accurately is a term called lumens. A simple analogy between candle power and lumens is as follows: if you were to pour out a bag of sugar on a table the peak of the mound would be candle power and the overal amount poured would be lumens. So to answer your question candle power and lumens are not interchangeable, but related. This light probably has about 20-30 lumens. However, candle power for this light is not an accurate measure of true ouput becuase if you are within a few feet the beam is very bright and concenterated, but as you move away to say even 20 feet your candle power will be much less.

For comparison sake, remember the old incandescent 3 cell Maglite. This had about 20,000 candle power and about 40-60 lumens.

One last note, unlike the old incandescent lights, this is an LED which has a perfect beam, no artifacts, and does not have the O-ring in the middle or anything like the days of the incandescents and poor reflectors.

Clifbar Clif Bars - 12 Pack

Clifbar Clif Bars - 12 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2009

Truly amazing energy/snack bar. I buy these in bulk at a local store when they are on sale. They literally work for every meal. So for breakfast try one dipped in coffee, delicous. Then for lunch or a snack anytime they are filling and taste amazing. They also taste delicious dipped in milk, a much healthier alternative to the Oreo! Instead of reaching for the candy bar these provide the satiety of a candy bar in those impulsive sweet cravings. After or before a workout they are fantastic. If you are on the trail and eating sparingly, Cliff bars are like an oasis in the desert. If you work or have to miss a meal these are perfect for that too, about 240-280 calories, perfect pick me up and tide over snack. I cannot say enough good things. Oh and I should mention these taste nothing like other designated energy bars, straight delicious. Go ahead buy some and you may start carrying one with you on work days for a snack. I usually have one spare in my backpack for school and keep one in my car etc.. 10 star product.

Trail cooking made easy

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2009

Great personal stove system. It can fire up some mac and cheese in under a minute. Very impressive conduction design with the increased surface area for fast boil. If you put too much water in you will spill boiling hot water everywhere so be careful. I have not used this in temperatures below freezing, so I cannot say its effectiveness in alpine conditions. The neoprene style sleeve makes it easy to hold and manage cooking without scalding your fingers. It also breaks down and packs up nicely for the minimalist who loves hot food quickly. Jetboil is releasing a new system soon hence the price should continue to drop for this model, but it is a great system without a doubt.

Mission Playground Crosscheck Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 24, 2009

Love these shirts, They run very large so make sure you buy down a size unless you are straight diesel or obese. These shirts reak of Cali west coast style anywhere you wear them. I suggest blowing up your next get together with your buddies who will all be wearing traditional polos and see their reaction. However, most importantly, irrelevant of their opinions is the what the ladies think. So far so good, get you classy steeze on with this shirt. The quality is superb, my only gripe is so few styles and options. MP needs to step up production I'm hooked.

Under Armour Wylie Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Under Armour Wylie Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 24, 2009

It is a great shirt and fairly breathable, but I am not as blown away as others. The shirt is great but the technology is more hype then revolutionary. "Polyarmour" is almost entirely polyester (about 93-96%) with a small percentage of spandex (the remaining 7-4%). So the technology is not earth shattering just cleverly marketed. Hey Im from Baltimore, the heart of UnderArmour so I am huge supporter, but dont be fooled by fancy buzzwords. A solid shirt, and good choice for anyone but not knock your socks off insanely awesome.

A great towel

Sea To Summit DryLite Towel

Sea To Summit DryLite Towel

Rating for this product: 5 May 24, 2009

Worth the extra money for a seemingly small towel. Towels are essential gear often overlooked until you need them for a variety of reasons. Even after cleaning off your soaked hands, face, or knife/machete you will be thrilled to own a very absorbent towel. Towels have countless applications on the trail and I keep one folded in my E&V pouch so I have quick access to it. As small essential towels are concerned this is a great pick. It packs tight and will soak up an amazing amount of water and dries quickly, easily ringable. Shamwow style results.

Nice tent

Big Agnes Parkview 3 Tent - 3-Person 3-Season

Big Agnes Parkview 3 Tent - 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 May 17, 2009

Overall this is a good tent. When used for three grown men and a dog we were comfy with sufficient room. Setup is straightforward and the materials are top notch. It rained lightly during the night and we had no problems. The vestibule is large and good for loading up a few packs and boots. The interior height and ovreall space was great for hanging a lantern and playing some cards, plenty of space did not feel too tight. The weight is fine, I do not mind carrying a slightly heavier load for increased durability and comfort, worth it to me. The guidelines have a nice reflective coating that allows you to spot your tent on the way back from a nightly bathroom trip or late night expedition. I only give this 4 stars because of my limited experience in varying conditions, but so far ALL Big Agnes products and tents especially I have used are a cut above the rest, really a solid choice if you can afford a Big Agnes they are great tents.

Mission Playground Juarez Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Mission Playground Juarez Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 28, 2009

The coolest shirt I own easily. Styling is very California, looks great with a pair of shades and sandals, the ladies do dig for sure. My only gripe which it is not really, just buyer beware, the shirt fits rather big so make sure if you are in between sizes go down. I wear a medium and it fits just right a little loose keeping your summer muscles hidden subtly instead of meathead tight, excellent look. I sometimes where large in shirts but that would be way too big on me, I'm 5'8 155. Worth the bucks for sure, and the snap buttons are freakin sweet.

Solid choice for a lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 April 28, 2009

This to date is probably the best lantern you can buy, well this and the smaller version of this depending on your weight/output preference. Most lanterns are larger and produce less light. This lantern has fantastic output, deceiving really, and it can collapse into a tight package for transport. The design is ample in ruggedness and does not have a cheap thin glass or plastic org. The design on this lantern is great, make sure to stock up AA batts just in case of prolonged power outage, otherwise the NRG pack will be fine on camping trips, it has a long discharge. My one critique is the LED used in this light could be upgraded and would give off even more light. Future models may utilize newer LED technology and produce even more output.

Coleman 2D WaterBeam Auto-On Flashlight

Coleman 2D WaterBeam Auto-On Flashlight

Rating for this product: 2 April 28, 2009

This light is of the old generation incandescent bulbs, which means it generates more heat (heat loss simply wastes available light energy to thermal energy, thus LEDs much more efficient), bulb can break, unless you have fabulous optics (this does not) you get irregular crappy beam. Lastly, weight is an issue, this takes 2D batteries they are heavy and cumbersome, not what you want camping or really doing anything considering how little light you get. Overall save your money, yes it floats and yes it is waterproof, but that to me does not outweigh the fact it is a flashlight first and then has cool floating waterproof features 2nd. Go spend an extra 10 bucks and by a much better light.

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2009

Worthy of the five star distinction, as others have mentioned these are sturdy, comfortable, and durable = the ideal technical sandal. After a long hike put these on at camp and instant relief from all day trekking. They are incredibly sturdy and grip as well as boots with the Vibram sole. Additionally, they are great for outdoor activities where you need more than a sandal and less then a closed toe shoe. A crucial piece of gear needed in the arsenal, great for multiple activities. However, styling wise they are not attractive IMO. I wear them with an activity in mind, never "out" or for fashion purposes.

Bens 30 is solid

Adventure Medical Ben's 30% Deet Home & Field Pack Tick & Insect Repellant

Adventure Medical Ben's 30% Deet Home & Field Pack Tick & Insect Repellant

Rating for this product: 4 April 25, 2009

Bens 30 is good for almost all occasions, but if you really go to serious mosquito country pack Bens 100, it's 95% vs 30% DEET. The 30 will be fine most of the time so don't fret, but I also suggest some mosquito nets, regardless of the DEET you have. The nets are a mechanical barrier that simply are better than any chemical and give the confidence the bugs cannot physically touch you or get in your eyes (the worst!). Buy this with confidence it is much better than anything you can get at your local drug store, OFF Deep Woods is 25% (readily available), but now OFF does make a 30% but most retailers do not carry it. A safe purchase.

Adventure Medical Ben's 30% Deet Home & Field Pack Tick & Insect Repellant

April 25, 2009

Hey Steve, I cannot give you an exact answer, but the small bottle has 37 mL, given the average spray is about 0.2 mL you should get at least 185 sprays. That should last for the duration of any weekend trip for you and some buddies. The larger container you can use to refill, I have still had my little bottle for some time without needing refilling. Bottom line, the small bottle will last a long time!

Nalgene Tritan Wide Mouth BPA-Free Bottle - 32oz

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2009

This is a another of multiple reviews prasiing the Nalgene. It is simply essential gear for any outdoorsman, and a great every day water bottle. It also stays smelling nice and fresh for months. This may sound gross, but I got this new upgraded BPA-free Nalgene in September, it is now the end of April, I use it every day...and I have never washed it! Ladies I am sorry that is gross, but as an unintentional science experiment I have proven the odor fighting ability of Nalgene. It still smells great and has no stains or buildup, like every other review a great choice in the water bottle department.

Patagonia Stretch Element Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Stretch Element Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2009

Patagonia hit a homerun with this jacket. The fit is very slim/athletic so be aware of this when purchasing. I am 5'8 155 and the medium is custom tailored for me, and it is not loose or blousey anywhere, great overall fit. It is absolutely waterproof, and vents well if you overheat in summer storms or in a tropical storm piling sandbags (personal experience). The internal pockets are mesh so keys and other unshapely items may get caught, but that is a minor irritation. The sleeves are a good length with adjustable cuffs that are ideal for gloves or sealing off your arm from the elements. The hood adjusts easily allowing you to customize the fit for hat/helmet or head size. The zippers are great, no weakness in waterproof materials here, they will keep the water out 100% as long as you remember to zip them! The underarm vents are a great addition and very necessary for hot humid rainy conditions. It can get extremely hot sauna style in this jacket if you do not vent. This however is great if the ambient temperature is chilly. One last note, it packs up great and is exceedingly light, so you can stuff it anywhere and have confidence in complete weather protection if weather takes a turn for the worse. Overall a great shell, superior design, and top-notch materials, I highly recommend.

Patagonia Stretch Element Jacket - Men's

April 25, 2009

I agree with Brian, this jacket is cut very slim/athletic, so if you plan on doing serious layering you might want to go up a size if you are close to being a large without layering. I am only 5'8 155 and the medium is snug around the chest and shoulders, but the fit is perfect for me with minimal layering. A really good picture of the fit of this jacket is on the Patagonia website with someone wearing it.

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

If you're wondering about a perfect pad for all seasons you have just found it. The pad is very light and packs down into a tight stuff sack. Additionally, the material is very durable and very comfortable, once fully inflated, it stays firm and retains shape as you snooze. It does take some time to inflate if you have it compressed for a long time, but if you manually blow into the valve it works great. However, in freezing conditions do not manually inflate, if the temperatures are cold enough the moisture from your breath can condense inside, which can damage the pad (must be VERY cold). This goes for all sleeping pads, and bottom line this is a fantastic pad worth the money for sure. If you're still using a large foam roll pad, you will be blown away by switching the Prolite 4 in comfort up, weight down, packability up, temperature management up, and you can read the other 100 reviews if I haven't convinced you.

Therm-a-Rest Trekker Chair

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

You have to add this to your gear list. How many times after you have set up your tent and gotten settled, then you realize sitting down would be awesome, but there is no surface or place to sit? Well it happend to me one to many times and bought this chair and it is crucial gear now, would not go camping without it. It folds up very well to a skinny pole (also incredibly light) that you can slide inside your pack or attach on the outside. Either way it unfolds and snaps into position around your sleeping pad and is suprisingly comfortable and very strong. You can lean back and you don't have to worry about it collapsing, very sturdy comfy and overall very well designed. Trust me, when the time comes and you want to sit around the fire, take a load off, or contemplate existance overlooking the majestic mountains this chair will make the experience even better.

This is crucial/essential gear without a doubt. You can buy multiple waterproof items and stuff sacks etc.. but of course not everything is waterproof and nobody likes soaking wet clothes and poteintial electronics getting wet. The answer, just make sure you have this and before it starts downpouring you will have nothing to worry about. It packs into a small ball for maximal portability, and easily fits over your pack (with approprite sizes). Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2009

I cannot believe I haven't reviewed these sooner! I bought these from BC about a year ago. They have fantastic construction from the sealemd seams, to the measurement and sizing. I am 5'8 150 athletic build, waist 32 and the M was perfect. In fact Arc'teryx desgined these pants to be big enough in your normal size that accomadates for putting these over another layer. So I recommend sticking with whatever normal size you wear. Performance wise I used these in a tropical storm with high winds heavy-sideways rain and was dry as a bone. I also used these in about 8 inches of snow as my outer layer because I lost my insulated ski pants, but with some base layering, these pants were amazing, again dry as a bone, I sat in the snow and rolled around too, I was impressed. Lastly, if you're not convinced yet, I used these to cross a river in the Shenandoah Park, granted it was about 2-3 feet deep (thigh high), but I put these on and made sure my boots were ready too and headed across, again bone dry, I felt the cold of the fall water through them but no water made it through anywhere. Overall, buy on sale if you can I did about $130, but they are worth every penny, a must have in your outdoor arsenal!

The North Face Ruckwell Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2009

A good blend of breathability and warmth. I recently purchased this shirt and I have logged in several runs in varying conditions. Overall a very nice choice, it has some venting over the shoulder that you cannot see in the picture that really cools you off when you need it most. Additionally, the vaporwick system I believe it is 100% polyster (so nothing too revolutionary) but it does what its supposed to, and the stank factor has been non-existant thus far. The style is a little bit looser than I anticiapted but not bad. It is certainly not UA type next to skin. I am 5'8 150 athletic build and the medium is great, fits nice even on my short arms! Neck is good too not too tight and not loose and falling down the shoulder, stays high and tight where it should. Overall great gear piece for running, cycling, well heck anything outdoors in moderate temperatures.

Brunton Lamplight - Extendible LED Flashlight

Brunton Lamplight - Extendible LED Flashlight

Rating for this product: 4 April 1, 2009

I am a flashlight connoisseur. I collect high-end expensive illumination tools, way beyond the scope of this type of light, also far more expensive. That said this light is ideal for someone who needs a sturdy, long-lasting, reliable camping light. For its size and low price it does provide decent light output probably around 20 bulb lumens. It is not much of a thrower (long reaching beam), but the beam is tight and focused. Within a few feet the LED is brilliant white ad looks like a surgical light, but over long distances > 20 feet get a LED/Incandescent light with more watts. The lantern feature is what sold me originally, however as many have listed the output on lantern mode is negligible. The feature is a great idea, but reflectors are needed to generate any serious glow. This light is ideal for the minimalist, who is not a flashaholic.

This is a must for the spring and summer. Think about all those times either during the day when you stop for a minute on the trail and a horde of flies and bugs finally launches their attck. Or at night when you have the headlamp on and you attract large moths and other massively annoying insects. This net is crucial, you put it on (careful one time I was being assaulted and put this on quickly but managed to trap one of the moths inside the net!) and the bugs just keep coming but they dont bother you a bit. It is amazing my buddies were so jealous when i pulled it out of my bag. The net itself is great it has a draw string at the bottom to make sure the arthropods cant sneak in!. Brunton L5 Headlamp

March 30, 2009

Hey greg, There are 4 settings Hi ~ 80-100 lumens.. Med ~ 45-60.. Low ~ 10-20, and strobe ~ 80. These are just estimates! I did not use any instrumentation or calculations these are simply personal estimates (I do own rated 220/30 lumen LED, 3,500 lumen HID, 60 lumen incandescent and many others!). The battery back lasts a very long time even at high setting. I have used it extensively and have not had an issue with step down voltage to conserve power. I am not sure what happend to Cowboy but other reviewers and gear junkies like myself did not experience these issues. The actual headlamp is 4 oz! Incredibly light no batteries on head or anything, the battery pack does come close to a pound, but you can put it on your belt or the belt that comes with the lamp. You wont need an additional battery pack! If you really wanted too (not be worth your time) you could modify this light and add a slightly more powerful LED and two battery packs, but not for the average joe. Now my only real critique is the housing of the battery pack it is not water-tight. So make sure you have it under your waterproof layer just in case, but the headlamp is water-resistant/easily survive rain and snow, not for scuba or diving! Hope that helps, honestly it is a pretty beast headlamp, if you find it on sale go for it you'll be stoked and your friends will be jealous.

Outdoor Research Radar Pocket Cap

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2009

Well I have been on the search for a good fitting stylish hat seemingly forever. There is always something not quite right whether it be fit to brim to style etc... The list of imperfections is endless. I have a tiny head for a guy not obvious to the casual observer, but when it comes to sunglasses and hats, forget it I need some personalized gear. This hat fits perfectly (I have the small!). The small brim is perfect too, it is a good balance so you dont get the beak look many other caps. Material is light fairly breathable. Oh and it folds up without ruining the brim it is designed for that, and allows you to carry it in your jean pocket on those nights at the bar when you suddenly think damn I kinda wish I had a hat right now. No one will even know its in your pocket, and slip it on and instant style points.. Overall a great hat, and an added bonus buy some waterproofing spray and then it becomes even more functional!

Suunto X9i GPS Watch

Suunto X9i GPS Watch

Rating for this product: 2 February 24, 2009

Well I usually give rave reviews to products I write about, but this one just does not cut it. I bought mine for a great price (new) only $330 about a year ago, but I have sent it back for repair twice. First the GPS did not work properly with incredible inaccuracy, then I got a replacement and the face literally separated from band! The glue had melted away, now that is some shotty construction on a watch retailing for over $500. Under ideal conditions the GPS fix takes forever! If you want to go out and run with this thing you had better set it up about 15 minutes and leave it still somewhere if you want a chance at the GPS fixing, otherwise youve got one badass stopwatch for your trip. Now lets say that actually worked, make sure you stear clear of any trees! The signal goes away easily and will leave you baffled about either your super human speed according to GPS, or the opposite where you ran say 7 miles and it says you only did 4. I could go on about the shortcomings of this watch but I think you get the point.
To say something positive.. it is great as a digital compass, and barometer (just cool feature, looking at the sky gives you pretty much same info), and thermometer, however if youre wearing it the reading is never accurate due to body heat! The altimeter is highly inaccuarate too, there I go again I tried to say something nice and I got sidetracked by more negative stuff. Bottom line, this is not useful device for anything other than playing around. A very awesome toy for grown-ups, but dont count on it saving your life or accurately giving you any information other than the time, date, barometer, and compass readings.

Fantastic Jacket!

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2009

This jacket is awesome. I have owned many jackets from hard shell to soft shell over the years and this thing is beast. Comfortable, breathable, and definitely element proof. I have been snowed on, rained on, and been in gail force winds in this bad boy. Although you will need some additional layering in some conditions, this jacket is ideal for looking cool whether headed to your favorite coffe shop, hitting the gym, going for a brisk run, or just hanging at the bar, look no further. I was truly impressed with the quality of the jacket, and the fit seems custom tailored for me, I'm 5'8 155 lean build. I also get comments from guys and girls, from fellow gear junkies to naive friends. Truly a great jacket to have in your arsenal, in fact I bought this originally for specific activities and fell in love with it, and now its all I wear. Ok, I could keep praising the jacket but you get the point - money jacket.

Great when working properly

Hydro Photon SteriPEN JourneyLCD

Hydro Photon SteriPEN JourneyLCD

Rating for this product: 3 October 7, 2008

Reliability has been questionable. I have used this cool gadget on two weekend backcountry trips. When it works properly it is an amazing product, however sometimes, and more often than not on my last trip, the unit would not engage properly. The light would flash on and then "frown" from LCD would appear, and yes the batteries are new a yes the water was making complete contact with the sensors. I cannnot explain why this happened, very frustrating, It may be an air bubble issue over the contacts when inserted into the Nalgene bottle. Just be mindful of this situation. Overall a cool gadget but if I was alone in the woods with only this as my lone water filter for over a couple of days I might be concerned.

Great Hiking Pants

The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant - Men's

The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 22, 2008

Great overall pants, ideal for hiking or just hanging around. They dry in no time flat and are very comfortable. There is plenty of room in the legs to allow for gear in pockets, breathability, and hidden leg strappings (knives etc...). The zippers are quick to come off when the going gets hot, and almost as fast to zip back on when terrain or weather changes. Pockets are large enough to stow most anything, and with the handy loops on the waist you can add a knife, light, compass, phone, or whatever you see fit. Great versatility with these pants, a must have for the avid camper/hiker/outdoorsman or just awesome pants in general if you don't demand performance on a daily basis you'll always have them if you need them. If there was a 10 star rating these would be worthy of such a distinction.

Great Headlamp/Thrower

Brunton L5 Headlamp

Brunton L5 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 April 17, 2008

If you're knowledgeable about lights then you can relate to this great headlamp. First, it is incredibly light on the head with the external battery pack mountable where you see fit. Second, battery life is great even at full power, and a nice step down if you happen to be using full power for hours. Third my favorite, it is blindingly bright, uses a K2 Luxeon 5 watt LED (no headlamps to date uses a 5 watt LED except this one), slightly outdated LED technology, but because of thermal regulations and size this is the perfect choice. The light boasts over 100 lumens = very bright, and can be used as a thrower (term for a light that has tight-far projecting beam). Usually LED's are not capable of throwing like incandescents (halogen, xenon, etc...), not the case with a 5 watt LED. Typically, LED's are good for providing diffuse light with a very short range, but the Brunton L5 does both. It comes with a diffuser that easily slides over the light and you have great flood spread for working at night. Take off the diffuser and blow away your friends or anyone who has a flashlight, they will likely feel ripped off because your headlamp is much brighter. A fantastic headlamp 5 stars.
